We have officially kicked off another great year for the Propeller Club and we have many more
exciting events planned for this club year!!!
On Saturday, August 20th, we hosted our 2nd Annual Family Fun Night at the Jacksonville Baseball
grounds where the Jacksonville Suns took on the Mobile Bay Bears. We had a great turnout with over 130
people in attendance, good food and an excellent venue. A special thank you to Rick Clark, Raul & Thays
Alfonso and Jay Wilson for their hard work in making this event a night to remember. I also would like to
thank our sponsors for their commitment to the club and for their generous donations provided for this event. It
is because of our sponsors we are able to have these wonderful and exciting events.
Then on Friday, September 23rd at the St. Johns Bar Pilot Association we held our Fall General
Membership Meeting. This was a “free” event where members were encouraged to bring one guest (non-
member) to this event. The purpose of this event was to talk about the mission of the Propeller Club and to
convey the message that by becoming a member of the club you are provided with great networking opportuni-
ties, education, community involvement, as well as the opportunity to provide a unified voice on critical issues
affecting the maritime industry. We also discussed what the club has planned for the 2011-2012 club year.
Thank you to Judy McQuaide for organizing this event for the club to Liz Miller and Thays Alfonso for setting
up, and to Jim Gillen for volunteering to serve the beverages.
Following the General Membership Meeting, we have a great fundraiser event planned where all the
proceeds will be donated to the Safe Harbor Maritime Academy on Saturday, October 22nd at the Maritime
Museum. Come dressed in your best pirate attire and be prepared to walk the plank! The best dressed pirate
will received a $100 prize! For more information regarding this event, please visit www.propellerclubjax.com.
I will also be attending the 85th Annual International Convention and Conference which will be held
in Le Havre, France from October 18th to October 21st as the club’s representative. I will report back to you
regarding matters discussed at the Conference which may be of interest to you as members of the Propeller
Club.
Last, but not least, the Propeller Club is now on Facebook and Linked In. I encourage you to check
us out on these social networks where we are able to share photos, announcements and information regarding
the club and events (details enclosed in this issue). A special thank you to Joey Elkana, Vice President of UNF
Transportation & Logistics Society, who has volunteered to maintain and update the Propeller Club’s Facebook
page.
I look forward to seeing you at future events and please feel free to contact me with any questions,
comments, and/or suggestions at [email protected]
Best Regards,
Melissa K. Wilson President

Hi Everyone!
I'd like to thank all of you for your patience and cooperation during our preparation for Hurricane
Irene. Though she opted to take the exit ramp for North Carolina, I was glad to see everyone tak-
ing her approach very seriously. I also want to give a shout out to Mr. Jim McLaughlin for all his
help in getting the word out to everyone through the JMTX network.
For the remainder of this section, I want to introduce you to our new Chief of Prevention, Com-
mander Marie Byrd:"
CAPT Andy Blomme
Captain’s Corner
Greetings Propeller Club Members,
My name is Commander Marie Byrd and I recently relieved Commander Dave Barata as Chief of the
Prevention Department at Sector Jacksonville. I’ve been at the unit for a little over two months now
and I can already tell it will be a very interesting and enjoyable three year tour.
A little bit about me: I graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1995 with a B.S. in Manage-
ment. From there I served as a deck watch officer aboard the USCGC GALLATIN, where the high-
light of the tour was our 4-month deployment to Europe to conduct Baltic Operations with the U.S.
Navy and 10+ diplomacy-building port calls that included Latvia, Malta, and Morocco. From 1997-
2001, I served at Marine Safety Unit Galveston, Texas as a marine inspector and marine casualty in-
vestigator. MSU Galveston was a great place to enter the marine safety field: with its extensive oil
and petrochemical industry in Galveston, Texas City, and Freeport; as well as the offshore energy op-
erations in the Gulf of Mexico.
I continued on to Marine Safety Office Honolulu, Hawaii, where I served as the Chief of the Planning
Department and then after we became Sector Honolulu, as the Port State Control Branch Chief. After
9/11, it was exciting to implement the Maritime Transportation Security Act regulations with our port
partners, as well as initiate the Vessel Boarding and Security Teams.
From 2005-2007, I attended San Jose State University in northern California and earned an M.S. in Human Factors. My
culminating project was a study of endurance risk factors in Bay Area commercial fishermen; a component of the crew
endurance management system- currently a voluntary program for the uninspected towing vessel fleet. Lastly, the past
four years I was stationed at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. in the Office of Design and Engineering
Standards.
On a personal note, I am very glad to have received orders to Jacksonville, Florida. Additionally, my husband has
strong maritime and family roots to Mayport. Helen Cooper Floyd Park, or Little Jetties, is named after his grand-
mother. Both his grandmother and grandfather were born and raised in Mayport; his grandfather of Minorcan descent
was a commercial fisherman. His great-uncles: Bob Parker was a St. Johns Bar Pilot; and Millard Cooper ran a pilot
boat for many years.
I look forward to working with you all these next few years; in the safety, security, and stewardship of the waters that
are a special part of our home.
Sincerely,
CDR Marie Byrd
