Message from the President

This summer is on track for being a summer chock full of success. And with the Lacey

Chamber, success is breaking out all over. Thanks to our great members, partners, and volunteers.

If you haven’t heard by now, the first ever South Sound BBQ Festival hit the ball right out of the park. Frankly, it was smokin’. They took a lot of ribbing, but we all owe a big thanks to Al Eckroth and his team, who included some sizzlingly

energetic people. The kind of people we have in great supply here at the Lacey Chamber—like Lowell Gordon of The Creative Office (and Chamber Vice President) and Dan Phillips of 4th Dimension Computers who were in charge of facilities; Kelly Hammeren, who headed up our marketing; Marv Kopp of Edward Jones and Chris Lester of Chris Lester Insurance, in charge of getting the food and the backyard joes corralled; Joan Keller of Virgil Adams Real Estate organized the judges; and Mike Thompson of Capital City Press, who was a great overall sponsor for all things in print. Thanks are also in order to staff members Amanda Graham and Sceni Foster, for their constant support and efforts, and planning committee members Stephen Capps, Tammy Redmon, Jane Walker, Marny Bright, Jeff Kopp, Keith Curry, and Angelique Wilson.

I’d also like to thank Lenny Greenstein and his team for manning the Chamber corn booth. Lenny was great. If you had something to tell him he was willing to lend an ear—and sell you one too. And he was humble. Every time I told him what a great job he was doing, he said, “Aw shucks…”

Success wouldn’t be possible without community partnerships and volunteers. So be sure to turn out for our Forum on August 3 to learn about how Jon Tunheim of the Thurston County Prosecutors Office is helping make things better. He’s got some new initiatives in process like a gang prevention task force, Target Zero, and the Family Safety Team. Jon was elected Thurston County Prosecutor not long ago, but he’s been with the Thurston County Prosecutors office for 23 years. He received his undergraduate degree in physics from South Dakota State University and his law degree from the University of Puget Sound School of Law. He has personally prosecuted cases involving charges ranging from drug possession to murder, specializing in the prosecution of sexual assault, domestic violence and crimes against children. Jon and his wife Marcia, also an attorney, have four sons.

He is active in several community charities. He served on the board of Child Care Action Council and was president from 2007-2010. He serves on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington and was president from 2006–2008. He also serves on the board of the Family Support Center of South Sound and is an active member of the West Olympia Rotary Club.

How can I get the most from my Chamber membership?” I have asked myself that

question in various forms over my dozen or more years as a member of various Chambers of Commerce. Am I going to the Forum with a purpose, or is it simply to have lunch and see some old friends? If I have a purpose, what is that purpose and how and to whom do I present that purpose? What

committees does the Chamber offer, and will my participation improve my business, myself and/or my community? If so, then how? What opportunities are available to me to develop, improve, or utilize my leadership skills? How can I get on the Board of Directors or even grow up to be President of the Chamber? If these questions have been on your mind for any amount of time, whether several years or just the last few sentences, member orientation meetings are a solution available for you.

The Chamber has scheduled orientations for August 11, 2011, from 10:30 a.m.–noon and 5:30–7:00 p.m. These will be held in the Chamber conference room and can accommodate 13 attendees per session. We held the attendance to that number to allow you the opportunity to participate freely, make the best use of time, and because that is all we can fit at the table. As these sessions

fill up we will add more dates to allow every member seeking to uncover the value that comes from being a member of the Lacey Chamber of Commerce, your premier business resource, to attend.

Member orientations are not solely for new members. Any member who wants to uncover additional value from their membership may attend. There is no cost, and the information gained will help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in networking, improve your business, your community and ultimately you. If you are an existing business with a new manager, partner, business development officer, or other relationship tasked person, this meeting can make a huge difference in the results they can develop.

During the course of the session we will discuss the mission of the Chamber and how your participation helps you and other member businesses increase their business. You will discover the committees that are available and lay the foundation for other committees for the future. You will learn about leadership opportunities and how our Board of Directors and Executive Boards work. We will also explore our fundraising programs and how we are able to fund the different benefits the Chamber provides to the membership.

Our orientation process is another example of the value that your Chamber staff is bringing to you in our efforts to be your Premier Business Resource.

In late June, the Lacey Chamber, North Thurston Public Schools, the Lacey Subchapter of the

Association of the United States Army, and the City of Lacey came together at the Thurston County Fairgrounds to roll out a three month long project called the “Arrowhead Adopt-a-Unit” program. With approximately 200 people in attendance, including the mayor, the school superintendent, the 3-2 Stryker

Brigade Combat Team commander, the Lacey Subchapter of the Association of the United States Army’s executive committee, and the fine remaining soldiers, a “Community Accord” was signed. Special thanks to the sponsoring businesses: Harborstone Credit Union, Heritage Bank, and America’s Credit Union for ensuring everyone received a nice meal during the gathering.

Following the signing, businesses that agreed to adopt units met their partnering commanders for the first time. Contact information was exchanged to begin forming reciprocal relationships. The project will be monitored every six months

to ensure a connection was made and each one continues to grow into something long lasting. “I am thrilled that the North Thurston Public School District agreed to do this,” said Courtney Shrieve, Community Relations and Communications Director of the North Thurston Public Schools. “We’re looking forward to a long-term relationship with our assigned connecting units,” she went on to say.

It’s Air Force Air Mobility Rodeo time! During the month of July, International and United States troops joined together on McChord Field to compete on the ground and in the air to win

the coveted first place “Best Team” award! During the rodeo, local businesses reaped the benefits of added sales from the various teams, to include hotels and rental car companies, up and down the I-5 corridor. The Lacey Chamber recognized the value of having these teams here and decided to show their appreciation by having a “Home Team” Appreciation Picnic on McChord Field.

Although the weather was questionable, it didn’t stop 400 Airmen from the 446th Airlift Wing, the 62nd Airlift Wing, and Air Mobility Command from enjoying the nice feast Famous Dave’s spread out through the coordination of the Lacey Chamber and the help of various sponsors. Chamber Government Affairs CommitteeBy Michael G. Jackson, President/CEO, Cascade Driving Schools, Inc.

The Lacey Chamber Government Affairs Committee represents you in local political matters affecting Chamber members. We concentrate on important local

races, interview candidates as well as superintendents and administrations of political entities in the county. In the past, we have interviewed both current incumbents and candidates for Thurston County Commissioner, Lacey City Council, and the Lacey Fire District. This includes candidates, issues, and community leaders, as well as heads of organizations and departments such as LOTT and IT. We have also interviewed judges and make recommendations to the Chamber Board for endorsements on candidates and issues. We look at statewide initiatives and their proponents and opponents and see how they will affect Chamber members.

We don’t interview national or statewide candidates. We do not recommend a stand on national issues. We concentrate on local issues and candidates. In September we present a candidates Forum that allows Chamber members a firsthand look at candidates.

Some members are also part of a subset; The Lacey Business League, the Chambers PAC. The PAC gives money (up to $250) to worthy candidates that we feel will advance Chamber goals and objectives. You can become a voting member of the PAC with a $100 annual donation. A check off donation on your Lacey Chamber annual renewal also supports the PAC.

Recently we interviewed Mark Arras, candidate for position 3, Lacey City Council, currently held my Jeff Gadman. Mark is a Washington State Patrol Lieutenant with 29 year of service. He is married and has five children, two still at home. He is a U.S. Army Veteran.

Mark is a bit of a political novice but ran and lost against Mary Dean in 2003. He has not held an elected or appointed political position. He is back, he says, to ensure the future of Lacey as a place where children and families are safe. Mark also pledged to be non-partisan, a deeply divisive issue with the Lacey Council. Mark has several endorsements including Kym Wyman, Judy Wilson, and Gary Edwards. To date, he has raised $1,700. Mark’s web page is www.arras4council.com and his e-mail is [email protected].

Mark’s interview is like most of our others. We are small group; we ask broad questions and very specific ones. We follow up and at times it is uncomfortable for candidates. It can be a hot seat. This is as close as you can get to a job interview for candidates

The Lacey Government Affairs Committee does not always make an endorsement and never without interviewing all active candidates. We meet the second Friday of the month at the Panorama City Restaurant. Our Chairman is Dani Anderson. In the near future we will interview the other council candidates, fire district candidates, as well as other candidates and political issues affecting Chamber members. Come join us.

A Day of Empowerment is designed by local women for local women. The core beliefs of Empowered Women productions are threefold: (1) women thrive by building

relationships, (2) we have more in common than not, and (3) we need opportunities to connect. The annual Day of Empowerment gives women in our community a venue where they can connect with themselves and others while exploring the possibilities of growth and change.

The four founders—Nancy LaPointe, Marny Bright, Carrie Devlin, and Tammy Redmon—have been active in our community for several years. After taking an informal survey, they found that most women—homemakers, business owners, retirees, caregivers, and volunteers—feel disengaged from a sense of belonging. They seek a forum where they can celebrate and explore their uniqueness and connect with one another. The Day of Empowerment is now that forum.

The full-day event will be filled with inspiring keynote speakers, creative hands-on workshops, effective networking opportunities, good food, and fun! The goal of the day is to inspire local women to realize their full potential and achieve self-sufficiency—financially, emotionally, and physically.

We were honored to have July’s 5:01 Surge hosted by Ferguson. Ferguson is located off of Carpenter Rd. (the part not under construction, right off of Martin Way) and has a beautiful, top-notch showroom. Sinks, toilets, faucets, bathtubs are some of the many items they offer to their

customers. They have been at this location since fall of 1990 and have an excellent staff. Larry Anderson is the Manager and Carrie Deines is the Showroom Consultant.
