celebrating special sistersAugust 2nd is “Sisters Day”, a time each year when those who are fortunate enough to have a sister can celebrate each other.

There are two girls - special sisters - who are very special to Kay Van Wey. They are Kristi and Teri Barnhill. It was, unfortu-nately, a tragic event that brought these two special young girls into Kay’s life.

When the girls were only 21 and 22, they lost their mother to a tragic medical malpractice incident. Only if you have had the misfortune of losing a parent at such a young age can you understand how truly difficult a loss like this is. As tough as it was for these two sisters, they were so thankful to have each other, and they stuck together, always there for each other...best friends.

When they lost their mother, one of the doctors involved referred the girls to Van Wey Law. Kay Van Wey represented them throughout the lengthy litigation process and, as Kristi stated,

“Kay was truly an inspiration to us.”

The girls were just as much of an inspiration to Kay as she was to them. Kay was able to bring about a positive resolution to the Barnhill’s medical malpractice case - one that would help them as college careers began and later, as started their own families.

What happened after this is truly remarkable. Kristi, the youngest, will graduate next year from TWU with a degree in Government with an emphasis in Law. She credits Kay as her inspiration for pursuing a degree in the Law field. Teri, the oldest, will graduate this summer with a degree in Health Adminis-tration and Technology. She has been employed with Anthem for over ten years now.

Both girls have found success in their lives. This is why Kay Van Wey does what she does, and witnessing these two sisters’ lives and all they have accomplished inspires her to continue working hard and truly caring about her clients.

Teri and Kristi are best friends who rely on each other in the absence of their mother. They have overcome, and their story is truly an inspiration for all of us that sends this message: Never ever quit, no matter what. Thank you, Teri and Kristi Barnhill for your inspiration and for sharing your special story. May God bless you both!

mom’s famousbirthday cake

“This is the recipe our mother used for all birthday cakes for 5 months in a row. We all looked forward to having the cake every month.”

● Combine in a large bowl 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of flour. Mix and set aside. ● Melt 1 stick of butter and 1/2 cup of Crisco. (Mom always used another stick of butter if Dad wasn't looking), 3 tablespoons of Cocoa, 1 cup of water and bring to a rapid boil. ● Pour this over the sugar and flour mixture and then add 1/2 cup of buttermilk, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, 2 slightly beaten eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. ● Pour into a greased, non-floured pan and baked exactly 20 minutes at 350.

After the cake has been in the oven for 10 minutes, start the icing by melting 1 stick of butter, 3 tablespoons of cocoa, 7 tablespoons of milk. Bring to a boil then remove from heat and add 1 box of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla and 1 cup of chopped nuts. Spread onto the hot cake when finished baking.

van wey law makes a donation to benefit the community:SWIMMING LESSONS FOR UNDER-PRIVILEGED CHILDRENAt Van Wey Law, we take our job of representing victims very seriously. We also believe in supporting our community and improving it in any way that we can.

One client in particular that made such an impact on all of our lives this past year was Yoshika Calhoun. Yoshika is an amazing woman and a wonderful mother who does all she can to make sure her children have all that they need in life, especially unconditional love. Unfortunately, tragedy struck for Yoshika and her family one summer when her son, Sir’Lemuel Calhoun, lost his life at 12 years old in a drowning incident at a water park.

As a mother myself, I can’t begin to imagine how devastating this would be. The time I spent with Yoshika while she picked up the pieces to move forward enriched my life in so many ways. We don’t ever want this to happen to anybody, and we wanted to ensure Sir’Lemuel’s and other kids’ drowning deaths are not in vain.

We want to encourage waterpark owners to promote a culture of safety. We chose to make a donation to a waterpark in Waco, Texas, that seemed to be making a real effort to make their park safe. The donation would enable underprivileged children to receive free swimming lessons at the location. This was one way we could help to prevent another tragedy like Sir’Le-meul’s from occurring again.

The donation will help pay for swimming lessons for disadvantaged children ages 3-13 in the community. It’s crucial that children learn how to swim so if they get into trouble, they are able to get themselves out of it quickly and safely.

This is what life is all about - not taking anything for granted and using our talents to spread good in the world and help others.

It’s hard to believe we are already

in the month of August! Time

flies, doesn’t it. I truly hope your

summer has been as eventful and

enjoyable as mine has been.

August is the hottest month of the

year and the sun can sometimes be

brutal when we spend a lot of time

outdoors. What better time for us

all to be reminded of how to stay

safe in the summer heat?

Too much sun can cause a painful

sunburn, premature aging, wrin-

kling, and even skin cancer (melanoma). Practicing

proper sun protection safety can help us avoid these

consequences while we enjoy the outdoors.

The hours between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. are the most

hazardous for UV exposure in the United States. UV

rays are the greatest during the late spring and early

summer. The CDC recommends these options for

sunscreen safety:

● Use sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15

or higher, and both UVA and UVB protection.

● Sunscreen wears off. Put it on again if you stay out

in the sun for more than two hours and after you

swim or sweat.

● Check the sunscreen’s expiration date. Sunscreen

has a shelf life of about three years, but if it’s been

exposed to hot temperatures the shelf life is

shorter.

● Wear clothing to protect exposed skin. Loose-fit-

ting long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from

tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. A

wet T-shirt offers much less protection than a dry

one. At least try to wear a T-shirt or beach

cover-up when possible.

● Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade your face,

head, ears and neck. Avoid straw hats that may let

the sun rays through.

● Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV

rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also

protect the tender skin around your eyes from sun

exposure. Make sure they block both UVA and

UVB rays for the best protection.

Of course, staying in the shade as much as possible is

always the safest route. Following these tips will allow

you to stay protected outdoors and help you feel much

better after your time in the sun. Enjoy the end of your

summer safely!

AUGUST 21ST: national senior citizens dayNational Senior Citizens Day is a time to honor our elderly population. On this day, we should recognize and show appreciation for the value and contribu-tions of elderly people to home, family and society.

In his Presidential Proclamation (August 19, 1988), President Ronald Reagan said,

"For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communi-ties are good places in which to mature and grow older."

This August 21st, make your best effort to spend some time with senior citizens, show your respect for them, and maybe even embark in some volunteer opportunities that support the elderly in your community.

If you are a senior citizen, enjoy your day any way you desire. After all, this is your day!
