CARL RENNER [b]. 1886-Vienna, 1929. For a number of seasons a baritone of the Cologne Opera, Renner created there the role of Fritz in one of two simultaneous premiere performances of Korngold’s Die tote Stadt in 1920, this conducted by Otto Klemperer. The other was in Hamburg. In 1923 Renner sang with the Vienna State Opera and 1925-26 at Salzburg as the Count in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. His repertoire was varied and he was also noted for his lieder and oratorio per- formances. Renner’s few records were made for Vox while he was with the Vienna Opera.

EMILIO RENZI [t]. Faenza i. d. Romagna, 1908-1990. A noted tenor with a “light lyrical and incisive timbre that not only is attractive but also projects well” [Alan Bilgora], Renzi was at home in lighter musical fare (which he often sang as ALDO VISCONTI) as well as opera. One of his recorded portrayals was Flavio in the complete late 1930s Norma with Gina Cigna and Ebe Stignani.

2372. 10” Red Cetra AA 494 [52308/52309]. SERENATA (Umberto Giordano)/LINA DE FERRARI [s]. I FIORI PRIGIONIERI (Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli). Orch. dir. Arturo Basile. Rare. Few lt. rubs, cons. 2. $25.00.

GIUSEPPE RESCHIGLIAN [t]. Padova, 1875-Amsterdam, 1949. Giuseppe was the younger brother of Vincenzo Reschiglian, a baritone who had a lengthy career at the Met. Giuseppe’s debut was in the title role in Marchetti’s Ruy Blas at Pordemone, 1895, continuing to be heard in various provincial Italian houses into 1905. He appears to have then temporarily ended his career, resuming it again in 1913 as Almaviva in Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia. He included several theaters in the Netherlands in his schedule from 1915-1918. The U.S. was a base for a number of his performances in the 1920s, including the Chicago Civic Opera and the Phila- delphia Grand Opera (where late in 1925 he was the leading tenor in Faust and Rigoletto). In 1930, Reschiglian appeared in recital in New York’s Town Hall, an unnamed reviewer in Musical America stating that the tenor was “adept in bel canto. His animated interpretations and ringing high notes won much admiration”. He was also with the Cincinnati Opera that year in Mascagni’s Iris and in Carmen, singing secondary roles in both pieces. The only recordings traced by him are the item below and four later sides for Fonotipia-Odeon (two released in the U.S. on Okeh). 9286. 11” Fonotipia 69369/69368 [XPh5264/5263]. AURELIE RÉVY [s]. Kaposvár, Hungary, 1879-Toronto, 1957. Révy studied singing in Budapest, where she made her debut in 1897. Further studies took place in London, and she then appeared there with the Carl Rosa Opera and at Covent Garden. She was later a guest at La Scala and she was heard throughout Europe as (among other roles) Marguerite in Faust, Nedda, Elisabeth in Tannhauser, Carmen and Aida, the last two somewhat surprising considering her voice on records. She was also successful in operetta roles.

WILLIAM ROBYN [t]. (pronounced ROE-byne) Eastern Latvia, 1894-Englewood, NJ, 1996. I had the great treat of meeting the 96 year old Mr. Robyn in his apartment near Lincoln Center when he signed the records below. By departure time (my wife and I had to leave for a performance) he had spoken for about three hours and had only gotten up to about age twenty in his incredibly recalled and fascinating life story. He gave a successful recital at Carnegie Hall in 1920 accompanied by Frank La Forge. Said one reviewer: Beside Frank La Forge, his most valuable accompanist, the tenor looked like a midget, yet nevertheless he displayed enough strength and quality in his voice to surprise and thoroughly delight the good sized audience that had gathered to hear him. … His enunciation and diction were good and he has a pleasing stage presence; his voice has a wide range, and especially his overtones are a joy to listen to. Robyn also appeared with the NY Symphony under Walter Damrosch, but his small stature (barely 5 feet, shades of Joseph Schmidt) prevented him from an operatic career. He mentioned that on the other hand it seemed not to be a problem for those over average size, alluding to Pavarotti, who we were to see that afternoon. Much of Mr. Robyn’s stage work was in vaudeville and as a soloist in various movie “palaces” in the 1920s. Readers are referred to a fascinating interview of Mr. Robyn by Tim Brooks in the ARSC Journal and now available on the Internet: www.timbrooks.net/PDFs/robin1.pdf.

ELISE ROGER [s]. Mme. Roger was described in Le Figaro and Le Ménestrel as a “society singer” (a trained artist who, as a result of social standing, did not appear commercially on the stage). In 1902, she created in the Paris salons of Mme. Vlasto an act by Bemberg on a libretto by Stéphan Bordèles, Blessure d’amour with Horace Britt conducting musicians of the Opéra- Comique orchestra. This was repeated in several European locations. She appeared at the Trocadero in 1903, singing at a matinee in aid of children with tuberculosis. Here Hollman also appeared with her, as he had in 1901 at the church of Saint-Vincent de-Paul in Paris for Whit- sunday mass and later that year at the Gallery Club in London. Records of her to this point were not known. –Information through the much appreciated courtesy of Luc Bourrousse.

ARCANGELO ROSSI [bs]. Ferentino, 1857-Milano, 1907. A very amusing (at least I find him so) buffo who made his Met debut in La Boheme, 1903, as both Benoit and Alcindoro. His other roles during his Met tenure included Don Pasquale, Dr. Dulcamara, Masetto and the Sacristan in Tosca. He had been in San Francisco touring with the Metropolitan Opera during the disastrous earthquake of 1906 and it left him in a state of increasing “emotional distress”. On Feb. 16, 1907, he participated in a Met Don Pasquale which turned out to be one of the strangest presentations in that company’s history. The first scene of act one was completely omitted. Rossi appeared in the second act but sang it entirely seated in a chair. It was announced that he was indisposed and that the remainder of the opera would be sung without a Don Pasquale. The act turned out to be tenor Andreas Dippel singing Ernesto’s Serenata, “Com’ è gentil”, and then soprano Marcella Sembrich concluded the opera by rendering Arditi’s completely unrelated waltz, Parla. Shortly after, Rossi or the management cancelled the rest of his season. He returned to Italy and in June of 1907 committed suicide “in a moment of desperation”. –Information from Jim McPherson’s article in The Record Collector, Vol. 46, No. 1. 1936. 10” Blk. ANNELIESE ROTHENBERGER [s]. Mannheim, 1926-2010. An internationally known singer, Rothenberger made her debut in 1943, first singing lighter soubrette parts, eventually becoming in Der Rosenkavalier “the best Sophie in the world”, according to Lotte Lehmann. In the 1970s she began taking on heavier repertoire, which some feel negatively affected her voice. About the same period she became a popular TV host in Germany. I remember standing next to her at Carnegie Hall in the early 1960s as she enthusiastically cheered Elizabeth Schwarzkopf following a recital there.

CHARLES ROUSSELIÈRE [t]. 1875-1950. Originally a blacksmith, Rousselière made his operatic debut (1900) at the Paris Opéra in the role of Samson. His world premieres included Saint-Saëns's Les Barbares and L'Ancêtre, Mascagni's Amica, Fauré's Pénélope, and Charpentier's Julien. Rousselière's Metropolitan Opera debut as Roméo in 1906 was barely noticed by the critics, who devoted their reviews to the introduction of the American soprano, Geraldine Farrar, who was Rousselière's Juliette that evening. As Roméo he was considered "a manly and engaging figure." His voice was described as "a powerful and vibrant tenor." 2033. 10” Blk. Paris G&T 2-32818 [1802-F-1].

WILLIAM J. SAMUELL [b]. Swansea, 1885-1916. A student of Frederick King, Samuell made his debut as Dapertutto in Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Offenbach) under Thomas Beecham in that conductor’s first performance at the Royal Opera House in London. One review mentioned that Samuell “possessed a gorgeous high baritone that he used with exceptional skill, more than usual in such a youthful artist." He became very popular in England and worked primarily in concert with the major British orchestras and conductors but died in 1916 during a typhoid epidemic. His few HMV records are scarce. For an additional item, see NORA D’ARGEL.

The earliest performance of Sanz, who was Spanish, was in Italy, 1903. at the Teatro Guillaume in Brescia as Annina in La Sonnambula and then the Milano Teatro Lirico as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Her last traced season on the opera stage was in Spain at the Madrid Teatro Real as Rosina. However a 1927 mention of a recital she gave in Paris describes her as “la primera soprano del Teatro Real de Madrid”, the inference being that she was still singing there at the time. She apparently made only six recorded sides for Odeon around 1907. 2378. 11” Brown Odeon 37607/37608 [Xm1111/1112]. IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA: Una

In the meantime he studied voice, first with Ignacio Tabuyo and in Rome with Mattia Battistini. Sarobe made his debut at the Liceo as the King in Verdi’s La Favorita, 1919, following this with a tour of Spain and Portugal. Among his successes in Italy was in Boïto’s Nerone, 1925, where he appeared in Galeffi’s role with the otherwise original cast. He also sang at La Scala, the Paris Opéra, the Teatro Reale, and many other of Europe’s major houses. He was also successful in recitals and chamber music repertoire. 2359. 10” Green acous. BIANCA SAROYA-ONOFREI [s]. Germantown, PA, 1893-San Francisco, 1981. Saroya was born Alma Weisshaar of German-Amer- ican parents. She changed her name early on and would not divulge her original name throughout her life. She claimed to have been discovered by Leopold Stokowski, another famous artist with a somewhat enigmatic background. Saroya claimed she was 16 at the time she appeared under Stokowski’s direction with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She must have chopped a few years off her birth year as Maestro Stokow- ski hadn’t begun work with the Philadelphia Orchestra until October, 1912. At any rate Saroya studied for an operatic career, but her first big success seems to have been in operetta in 1916 on Broadway with John Charles Thomas in a revival of deKoven’s The Highwayman. The reviewer described her voice as “a pure soprano, clear as crystal”. She appeared through most of the subsequent years of her performing career with various touring opera troupes, notably the San Carlo Opera, often in the company of tenor Dimitri Onofrei, whom she married in 1923. That same year she sang leading roles with the San Francisco Opera in their inaugural season. While much of her repertoire was of standard parts, one particular exception was the creation of the title character in the American premiere of Eugene Goossens’ Judith with the Philadelphia Grand Opera in 1929. A Time Magazine reviewer depicted her as “satisfactorily bloodthirsty” in the gruesome role. Saroya and Onofrei performed in Europe and South America in the 1920s as well. Following their retirements, both artists taught at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and then privately in San Francisco. 3789. 12” Brown elec. Spanish Odeon 121.062 [XXJo2006/2007]. EVELYN SCOTNEY [s] Near Melbourne, 1886-London, 1967. Scotney studied originally in Australia and was recommended by Melba to her teacher, Mathilde Marchesi, with whom Scotney worked in Paris, 1910. This was followed by a period of study with Tosti in England. She then appeared with the Boston Opera as Lucia in 1912, singing several principal coloratura roles. She married Boston bass Howard White and toured with him in concert for several seasons, both in America and Australia. Following White’s untimely death during the 1918 flu epidemic, Scotney returned to opera, making her debut at the Met in 1919 where she remained two seasons. Her career continued for a number of years, primarily in recital.

Cantor GERSHON SIROTA [t]. 1874?-Warsaw, 1943. Sirota began his Cantorial career in Odessa, 1895 and became known throughout Poland and Russia for his remarkable vocal skills. While remaining a Cantor throughout his life, Sirota toured the world as a recitalist, incorporating into his programs the occasional non-liturgical songs and operatic arias. His voice was considered by many the equal of Caruso's. Sirota's first discs were made in Warsaw, 1902, and he continued making recordings into the 1930s. Other than a slight darkening of the voice, the phenomenal top notes, flexibility and dramatic intensity remained throughout his career. He and his entire family died in the Warsaw ghetto in 1943. According to one source he was, in his last year, reduced to going from door to door, singing prayers in hopeful exchange for bread for his family. All the Sirota records below are in remarkably fine condition.

LEO SLEZAK [t]. Moravia, 1873-Austria, 1946. A pupil of baritone Adolf Robinson, Slezak made his debut in Brno, 1896. In 1901 his greatest successes began when he made his debut at the Vienna Hofoper, for which he was selected by Mahler. He subsequently appeared at Covent Garden and the Met, his principal roles having been Otello, Manrico, Siegfried, Tannhäu- ser, Lohengrin and Walther. His 6’ 4” frame commanded almost as much attention on stage as did his remarkable voice. In later years, Slezak was heard more frequently as a concert singer and acted in character film roles in the 1930s. Slezak’s sense of humor could erupt at the most inappropriate times, such as happened during a performance of Aida at the Met. Following a particularly dramatic moment, Slezak turned to the choristers assembled behind him and made a grotesque face, the absurdity of it causing considerable laughter among chorus and colleagues which, of course, the audience could not appreciate or understand. Neither could the manage- ment, who fined the tenor a stiff amount for this incident. Slezak still found it funny enough to have himself photographed in Rhadames attire, documenting what caused the hilarity in ancient Egypt that evening. ELEANOR STEELE [s] and H. HALL CLOVIS [t]. A husband and wife duet team active in the U.S. and Europe, Steele and Clovis commissioned a number of works for their programs by, among others, Milhaud, Harry T. Burleigh, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Clovis (Omaha, 1900-San Francisco, 1970?) studied with Anna Schoen-Rene at Juilliard, having won a scholarship for advanced instruction in 1925. He wed Eleanor Steele around 1929 during a period when both were singing with the Little Theatre Opera Company. Steele was likely about ten years older than Clovis. She was the daughter of Charles Steele, an extremely wealthy partner in J. P. Morgan & Co. and was a noted society belle. In 1910, she wed Count Jean de la Greze, an Attaché of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They divorced in 1920. Sometime along the line she must have studied voice, as one article mentioned that she had “appeared in opera” in France as Ellen Maurey. Nothing could be found of her musically until her debut with the Little Theater Opera Company, NYC, in 1930. Colleagues in the company included a just beginning Risë Stevens, tenor William Hain and baritone (and later theatrical producer) Arnold Spector. With the death of her mother in 1932 and her father in 1939, Mrs. Clovis became very wealthy, although no doubt the family fortune had supported their career since it began, which, as a duet team, ran from 1932 to 1941. In 1934, they purchased a 244 acre estate in Greenwich, CT. They were divorced in 1942 and he made his way to California, where he lived with Charles Lee in the former Summerland home of Leopold Stokowski. The former Mrs. Clovis, always interested in rural America, became Mrs. Emmet Reese. She and her new husband moved to Idaho to breed cattle, thus ending her career in music. She and her first husband made a small group of (now rare) 1939 French Polydor recordings.

She wed Stuart Voss, whom she met while she was touring in Siberia and while he was on a U.S. Government mission. 1890. 12” White Victor Orth. Test matrix CVE-34930-4. FALSTAFF: E sogno? (Verdi). Baritone Vicente Ballaster had been scheduled as Ford for a special (1925) revival of Falstaff for Scotti in the title role, but illness prevented Ballester from taking the part. Tibbett, then in his second Met season singing small roles, was assigned to take Ballester’s place. After singing “E sogno?” (Ford’s Monologue) opening night, Tibbett retired to his dressing room but had to return to the stage to acknowledge the tremendous audience response. He was front page news the next day and his career was made. Tibbett recorded five takes of “E sogno” (Ford’s monologue) for Victor in 1926 but none was ever issued. The matrices were destroyed, although the metal for this take must have remained in the vault until the early 1930s as it is here pressed on a plastic material used by Victor for its pioneering 1931-32 LPs. The surface has some rubs and looks about 3 but it plays beautifully. It is one of two known copies of this recording. The other is an untrimmed shellac test of take 5, which quite amazingly I also once owned, but to my ears take 5 isn’t quite as successful as this performance. No other copies of any takes of this extraordinarily important record are known to exist. 3. $500.00.

UMBERTO URBANO [b]. Livorno, 1885-1969. Not much is known of Urbano’s early years or his training. The first traced performances are 1907. His idol was Battistini, and much of that singer’s sense of style and phrasing seems to have been acquired by Urbano. He had a “matinee idol” appearance and was heard in a number of major European theaters and concert halls. He sang with “rare elegance and class”, and one writer indicated the “sheer pleasure of his tone”. ALBERT VAGUET [t]. 1865-1943. Celebrated tenor of the Paris Opéra from 1890 to 1903. A fascinating article in a 1913 issue of Musical America tells of Vaguet, whose voice was affected by problems created during a tonsillectomy, thereby causing his retirement. Said Vaguet, “I still have the voice that won me fame and fortune, fresh, full, liquid. [Tenor Victor] Capoul weeps when he hears it. But to sing through a short scene means untold torture for me! That Paris surgeon laid the nerves bare in my vocal cords, or something like that. [It would have been better had he] … cut them out entirely. I cannot say that there is no bitterness left in my heart. There is. And when I heard Caruso two years ago at the Opéra I had to leave the proscenium box because tears were streaming down my cheeks. I had to clutch at the railing to stifle the sobs that were welling up in my breast, and even those sobs gave me physical pain that burned and tore me! It is folly, but I [still have] hope. There are times when the cords seem less terribly sensitive. Last week, at [baritone Pedro] Gailhard’s, I went through almost an act of Thaïs.” In addition to Vaguet, the opera world lost his wife, Alba Chrétien-Vaguet, a celebrated soprano, who also retired in 1903 to remain at his side. Apparently Vaguet’s work for Pathé, which continued until 1927, was possible because of the short duration of time involved in making each recording. This and teaching appear to have been his main means of support.

FERNANDO VALERO [t]. Seville, 1854-St. Peters- burg, 1914. While his date of birth is disputed (some sources indicating 1852), he studied with Julián Gayarre’s teacher, Melchiorre Vidal and later with the younger Manuel Garcia. His debut was at the Teatro Real in Madrid, 1878, where he gave the first performance in Spain of Nadir in Bizet’s Pearl Fishers, also having given the Italian pre- miere. He appeared at La Scala, his debut there as Gou- nod’s Faust in 1883, as well as in Berlin, St. Petersburg, London, and North America. In 1890 he appeared as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana in Florence, shortly after the world premiere (which had featured Roberto Stagno as Turiddu). So successful was Valero in this part that he was also called upon to give the first performances in Milan and at the Metropolitan Opera, among other sites. Illness forced Valero to retire from the stage in 1902

JEAN ÉMILE VANNI-MARCOUX [bs-b]. Turin, 1877-Paris, 1962. His debut was as Sparafucile in Turin, 1894, at the age of 17. He continued singing until at least the age of 78 (1955), when an LP recording of Delmet songs was made for French Pathé. While his roles were mostly bass, such as Boris Godounov and Méphistophèles, he also successfully ventured into the baritone repertoire, singing Scarpia and Raphael (in Wolf-Ferrari’s I gioielli della Madonna), to cite two. In some operas he is remembered for parts in both ranges, such as Colline and Marcello in La Boheme and Arkel and Golaud in Pélleas et Mélisande. He was also the creator of several roles, including Guido Colonna in Février’s Monna Vanna (1909) and Massenet’s Don Quichotte in Paris, 1910 (although Chaliapin had been the actual creator in Monte Carlo earlier that year). In addition to his success in London, France and Italy, Vanni-Marcoux was a popular member of the Boston Opera, where he made his debut in 1912 as Golaud, Boston critic Philip Hale writing, “It was one of the most striking interpretations that I have seen on stage for the last thirty years”. His name was originally Giovanni Emilio Diogenio Marcoux and changed, upon securing French citizenship, to Jean Émile Diogène Marcoux. For professional use he used a familiar abbreviation of Giovanni and his family name, usually (but not consistently) hyphenated.- Readers are referred to the superb article on the singer accompanying the Marston CD Vanni-Marcoux set from which this information has been taken. 2976. 10” Red acous. LOUISE B. VOIGT [s]. Apparently from New York, Louise Voigt had a series of “concert triumphs" in Berlin and had been offered “a most advantageous” contract from the Berlin Royal Opera, as well as by Conried for the Metropolitan. She chose not to accept these offers because of the death of her husband, after which she retired for a period. In resuming her career, primarily in the Midwest U.S., it was as an oratorio soloist and as a guest with the large German Sängerfests. At one such event it was noted that her voice carried “to absolute perfection… over a chorus of 5000 in fortissimo”(!). In 1913, she was guest soloist at a special fund raising concert at the Armory on 25th St. and Lexington Avenue in New York where “twelve to fourteen thousand people” heard her sing “Dich theure Halle” with Victor Herbert conducting an orchestra comprised of 150 principal players from the NY Philharmonic, NY Symphony, Metropolitan Opera and the Victor Herbert Orchestra. “Mme. Voigt’s voice easily filled the immense auditorium,” noted a reviewer, “and she was warmly applauded”. Her only recordings are two sides for Victor. EBBA WILTON [s]. 1896-1951. From the evidence of her fourteen records (all made early in her career), Ebba Wilton was the greatest soprano ever to emerge from Denmark. She had a fully developed coloratura facility, demonstrated, in particular, on her recordings of arias from La Fille du Régiment and Die Zauberflöte, but it is the ravishing sweetness of her tone that makes all her records so enjoyable. Her career, mostly in Demark, was from 1924 through 1949. – Prof. Stanley Henig (from Historic Masters notes).

He came to the U.S. in the earlier 1920s and was rejected by Ziegfeld as being “too small” (he was barely five feet). He was more successful in a Metropolitan Opera audition and sang there mostly in secondary parts from 1928 to 1936, his particular success having been Mime in Siegfried. A second career then commenced in Hollywood through 1946, where he played character parts, usually “excitable personalities, such as headwaiters and hotel clerks, often sporting a fake French accent”, in 27 films including Ninotchka (1939.) Madame Curie (1943) and The Razor’s Edge (1946).

ERNST WOLFF [baritone/pianist]. Baden-Baden, Germany, 1905-New York,1992. Wolff emigrated to Canada in 1933 and then was brought to the U.S. in 1935 by Kurt Weill and Max Reinhardt as assistant musical director of Weill’s Eternal Road (1935). In Germany he had worked with Hindemith and was Director of the Opera School at Hoch’s Conservatory as well as director of the Frankfort-am-Main Opera, 1928-33. In the later 1930s and 1940s he was particularly active in the New York area as a pianist, accompanist, and master class conductor. During the same period, Ernst Victor Wolff (1886-1961), a German born pianist and harpsi- chordist, also began his American performance and recording career in the later 1930s. I mention this only as they are occasionally confused or erroneously considered the same person.

ELLEN BEACH YAW [s]. Boston, NY, 1869-Covina, CA, 1947. Yaw began her career as a dramatic soprano, but her high notes were discovered and she then converted to a lyric-coloratura. In England, she created the leading role at the Savoy Theater in London, 1899, in Sir Arthur Sullivan’s The Rose of Persia. Further studies with Mathilde Marchesi in Paris did much to develop her trill and technical security. She then made her de- but in Rome, 1905, as Lucia under the name Elena Elvanna. Her sole Metropolitan Opera appearance in 1908 was also as Lucia during a period when the Met was attempting to find coloratura competition for the Manhattan Opera’s Luisa Tetrazzini. Reviewers seemed more taken by Yaw’s slender figure than her voice, one mentioning that she appeared as a “spilled saucer of milk” when she, in Lucia’s white garments, collapsed on stage after the “Mad Scene”. This is something that the competing full bodied Tetrazzini could not duplicate, but neither could Yaw, with her “wispy” high notes, emulate the Italian diva’s solid upper tones and technique. In an inter- view, Yaw claimed that she had been offered a three year contract by the Metropolitan but, expecting an engagement at the Vienna Hofoper, “was compelled to decline it.” Her career in concert, however, was lengthy, and her recording activity, begun for Berliner in 1899, included a recording for Co-Art as late as 1947. She was married to a cowboy-turned-Boston University Law School graduate in 1907 and settled in Covena, CA, where a number of sites were named in honor of “Lark Ellen”, including the “Lark Ellen Newsboys Home”, the “Lark Ellen Bowl”. “Lark Ellen Grammar School”, “Via Elena”, and the “Lark Ellen Fountain of the Birds”, as well as her own residence, the “Lark Ellen Ranch”. I wonder if any of these still exist?

NATALIA ERMOLENKO YUZHINA [s]. Kiev, 1881-Paris, 1937. Having studied in Kiev and St. Petersburg, with Paul Vidal in Paris and in Italy as well, Ermolenko made her debut in Kiev as Lisa in Tschaikowsky’s Pique Dame. She quickly became a leading soprano in Russia, appearing at the Bolshoi, in St. Peterburg, as well as abroad at La Scala and in Paris. In 1906 she married tenor David Yuzhin and from there on took his name professionally. She was the first to sing Elektra (Strauss) in Russia. In the 1920s, Yuzhina emigrated to Paris and was associated there with Russian opera performances that included her colleagues Chaliapin and Smirnov. Hers was truly one of the grand soprano voices of the period. Her vast, diverse repertoire encompassed Violetta in La Traviata through Sieglinde in Die Walküre.

ERMA ZÁRSKA [s]. Zárska, a Bohem- ian soprano, appeared at the Met the season of 1915-1916. A note of advance publicity indicated that she was 24 and that she had already appeared at the major houses in Prague, Berlin and Vienna. Her New York roles were listed as Aida, Tosca and Elsa. Her debut, Elsa in Lohengrin, wasn’t a success, the result, as explained in the NY Times, of “a severe cold”, and her voice having “dwindled to slight proportions” by the end of the opera. Other journals were far less charitable. After a respite of several weeks, Zárska returned to the stage as Santuzza, a role she successfully repeated twice more before returning to Europe. Early in 1915, she made what appear to be her only recordings, a few sides for Columbia.

RECORD SIZE INDICATED

1498. JOHN MC CORMACK MEMORIAL. I’m delighted to be able to offer this year another copy of this deluxe 10” record mauve label AGS Set pressed by HMV and

produced by Addison Foster in the early 1950s, AGSA 46-63. Three six-record deluxe padded albums (gold print on green) in a hardboard slipcase with notes. A number of the sides were otherwise unissued and are available here as the first and only 78 rpm editions. Despite mention to the contrary in the superb Worth-Cartwright discography, it is my understanding through papers I once saw in the late Addison Foster's home that while 150 copies of each of the records were pressed, only 100 boxed sets were issued. The remaining fifty single items of each issue were sold as single copies after Foster's death. Case, albums and records are as new, 1-2. $500.00.
