Audience
This unit is directed at:• compliance professionals;• 20-50+ years old;• new to the field or need to build a network;• have little experience in networking or using Web
2.0 tools.
Learning Goals• Students will learn to engage in conversations
with individuals and associations using Twitter.• Students will be able to create and update an
online resume using LinkedIn. Furthermore, students will create professional contacts.
• Students will learn to present topics to an online audience using slidesharing and screencasting tools.
• Students will create wikis on specific topics to add to the book of knowledge in compliance.
Context• Unit introduction: During a face-to-face workshop. • Students are given the basic information. • Students are also provided with examples of each tool. • Students will begin to create profiles.
• Online portion of unit: Students will have the opportunity to use the tools on their own.• Students will be provided with feedback from the
instructor for a period of one month after the workshop.

• Hands On• Students create their own Twitter account• Students are required to follow compliance associations
and government feeds• OIG, HCCA, CMS, OCR, etc.

Rationale: • Twitter is a good tool for social networking and
professional development. • Professionals can stay up-to-date on news and
connect with other professionals.• This is the first tool used by students in this unit
because it is quick and easy to start a profile.
Lesson 2: LinkedIn
Introduction: How LinkedIn can be used to:• Connect with other compliance professionals,
association and groups,• Stay up-to-date on news stories,• Receive email digests of group discussions,• Find events to attend,• Act as an online resume,• Find career opportunities,• Share information with staff.

Lesson 2: LinkedIn• Demonstration• Instructor shows students her own LinkedIn profile, her
groups, profiles of connections and typical posts.
• Hands On• Students create their own LinkedIn account• Students are required to join compliance association
groups and sign up for an email digest

networking and professional development. • Professionals can stay up-to-date on news and

Lesson 3: Online Presentation Tools
Introduction: How Slideshare or VoiceThread can be used to:• Share a presentation on a topic to a larger
audience,• Provide content 24/7 to employees and staff,• Share resources with other compliance
professionals online.
Lesson 3: Online Presentation Tools• Demonstration• Instructor shows students several examples of SlideShare
and VoiceThread
• Hands On• Students create an account• Students may create a presentation at a later time if they
do not have a presentation ready to go.

Rationale: • SlideShare and VoiceThread provide a means to
share content with a large audience, across distance.
• Many compliance professionals have presentations saved on drives that can be shared using these tools.
• This is the third tool used by students in this unit because it can be used to supplement social networking.
Lesson 4: Screencasting
Introduction: How Screencasting can be used to:• Increase avenues of compliance training to staff,• Create stand-alone trainings for staff,• Create videos to share on social networking sites,• Create promotional videos for the compliance
office.

videos using Jing and Screencast-o-matic
• Hands On• Students create an account• Students may create a video at a later time if they do not
have a presentation ready to go.

content with a large audience, across distance.• Many compliance professionals have
presentations saved on drives that can be shared using these tools.
• This is the fourth tool used by students in this unit because it can be used to supplement social networking and provide training.
Lesson 5: Wikis
Introduction: How Wikis can be used to:• Increase avenues of compliance training to staff,• Increase professional development,• Add to the “book” of knowledge in compliance,• Explore new regulations and interpretation
through collaboration.
Lesson 5: Wikis• Demonstration• Instructor shows students several examples of wikis, in
general and related to compliance.
• Hands On• Students create an account and begin adding to several
compliance topics during the workshop.
Lesson 5: Wikis
Rationale: • Wikis are a good way to explore a new topic.• Wikis provide an opportunity for collaboration
across distance.• This is the last tool used by students in this unit
because it can be used to increase professional development and networking.
Conclusion• Students now see how all these tools can be used
to increase their social networking and improve professional development. All tools can be used individuals or together.• For example, a SlideShare or screencast video can be
shared on LinkedIn and Twitter at one time.
