The Soviet Union was known at the time as the greatest team in the whole world, they had legendary players with unbelievable skill that used intimidation as their main weapon.

The Cold War

Iran hostage Crisis

• In November of 1979 Iran students took 52 American representatives from the American embassy in Tehran hostage for 444 days leaving Americans hopeless and the faith in America was being lost.

“Losing the Faith”

• Americans all over the Country are losing their faith in our Country because of events like the Iran hostage crisis, Soviets testing new weapons, the space race and the fear that the Soviets will succeed over us and president Carter gives a speech to help turn things around

• Herb Brooks, the head coach of USA, was determined to win the gold because of what he went through not making is team and seeing them win gold on TV

• He used hard work and team work to beat his teams and he new that it would work against the Soviets

Lake Placid Winter Olympics

• In the semifinals the United States played the Soviets in Lake Placid and defeated them 4 to 3 with captain Mike Eruzione scored the game winner and goalie Jim Craig making 39 saves to win the game
