Austmine 2015: Transforming Mining was Austmine’s biggest and best conference to date. This was the 7th edition of our biennial conference and the third time we were in Brisbane, one of Australia’s strongest hubs for both Mining and Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) companies. We were joined in Brisbane by nearly 600 senior level executives from miners, METS, government and research institutions to spend a packed two days hearing from 50 industry experts across a range of issues. We heard about technologies and topics as wide ranging as drones, automated load haul drives, big data analytics, hybrid airships, renewable energy and mill reliners, and what emerged over the two days were the consistent themes of the need for accelerated innovation and improved collaboration across the sector. Austmine 2015 brought the key players together to have this conversation and we look forward to increasing the dialogue and moving things forward.

At a time when pessimism is prevalent in the mainstream media, Austmine’s 2015 conference highlighted a bright star in the Australian economy, the $90 Billion METS sector. The 2015 Brisbane conference showed that innovation, driven by the great pioneering spirit of METS sector, is alive and well. I have attended numerous mining conferences over the years, and the Austmine Conference was by far the most inspiring and innovative. Congratulations Austmine on a fabulous, world-class industry event.”

Austmine 2015 Industry Leaders' Dinner and AwardsIn 2015 Austmine celebrated our 25th anniversary at our Industry Leaders’ Dinner and Awards, with over 350 senior industry executives in attendance to celebrate with us and our dinner sponsor, Etihad Airways. Our keynote speaker for the evening was Jeyakumar Janakaraj, CEO of Adani Mining who gave an inspiring speech about Adani’s vision for future collaboration with the Australian mining and METS industries.

Our four awards for the evening generated a lot of interest in advance of the night, with an impressive calibre of applications. We presented our two existing awards, the Craig Senger Excellence in Export award and the Austmine Innovation Award for METS, and were excited to introduce two new awards: the Austmine Champion of Innovation and the Austmine Innovation Award for Miners. Jeyakumar Janakaraj, Chief Executive Officer,

Adani

2nd Annual Austmine Innovation Award for METS Winner: DingoDingo won the award for their Trakka Field Inspection App which the judges selected as a unique and novel development.

Congratulations on winning the 2015 Austmine Innovation Award for METS! What do you think made your application stand out?

Paul Higgins, CEO, Dingo: Well, the feedback we received from discussions with the judges, was that our innovation solved a common problem in a practical way. It was just what was needed, nothing more and nothing less. Miners want robust, real solutions, not fluff and I think that’s what our team delivered. Of course it only really works because its connected to a very sophisticated back end cloud based system that took us 20 years to develop! As Steve Jobs said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”.

What would your advice be to any METS looking to apply for the award in 2017?

PH: Validate, Validate, Validate. Get something into the hands of customers quickly, and get direct feedback. Don’t outsource it. Do it yourself. The idea of the lean start-up is more relevant than ever. And don’t be afraid to try something new.

Craig Senger Excellence in Export Award Winner: Hy-Performance Fluid PowerHy-Performance Fluid Power won this award for their demonstrated commitment to ongoing growth of their export markets and a strong export strategy.

Congratulations on winning the 2015 Craig Senger Excellence in Export award! What do you think made your application stand out?

Sandra Gillanders, CEO, Hy-Performance Fluid Power: I would say there were a couple of things. We have a really clear vision for the future, especially relating to export, plus a successful track record exporting in a variety of markets. I would also say our demonstrated use of proven research and proper preparation and planning for the business growth overseas.

Austmine Champion of Innovation Winner: Bill WithersBill Withers has dedicated over 30 years of his life to the mining industry, coining the term Geo-Scientific Information Management (GIM) and developing acQuire Technology Solutions’ industry-influencing software, and was the very deserving winner of this inaugural award.

Congratulations on winning the inaugural 2015 Austmine Champion of Innovation Award! What do you think made your application stand out?

Bill Withers: I can only make assumptions, however, I think that our submission tells the story about how we innovated our company, our products and services, specifically our acQuire Technology and leadership in the domain space that our products and services provide solutions for – Geoscientific Information Management (GIM). The fact that we have been able to sustain innovation for a long period of time probably also contributed.

What would your advice be to anyone looking to nominate someone for the award in 2017?

BW: When categorizing innovation, people often reference three areas:• Technology (or offering) – Products and Services innovation• Organisation – Research and Development of the organisation itself• Network – How you integrate your company and offering within an industry ecosystem

My recommendation would be to share information in all of these areas not just the innovation of your offering.

Austmine Innovation Award for Miners Winner: Carbine ResourcesAustmine’s other inaugural award in 2015 was taken home by Carbine Resources, for their adaption of ion exchange technology to unlock the commercial viability of the Mount Morgan Gold & Copper Mine.

Congratulations on winning the inaugural 2015 Austmine Innovation Award for Miners! What do you think made your submission win over the others received?

Patrick Walta, Executive Director, Carbine Resources: The work being undertaken at Mount Morgan is innovative in every sense of the word. The project has remained dormant for nearly 25 years due to previous owners tending to focus on conventional process flowsheets, but taking advantage of higher metals prices. Unfortunately for them this has not provided an economic solution to restart operations at the historic mine site. Carbine’s use of an innovative flowsheet to process gold, copper and pyrite has not only provided a pathway to economic extraction, it has also allowed for the progressive environmental remediation of the site. It is therefore a win-win for all stakeholders, which is not often available in the mining industry.

What would your advice be to any miners looking to apply for the award in 2017?

PW: I would encourage all mining companies who are thinking outside the square and seeking to challenge industry norms to apply for the award. Given the relatively conservative nature of the mining industry, it is important that innovation is lauded as much as possible. The Austmine Innovation Award for Miners provides a fantastic opportunity to do this.

Thanks to the Austmine team for a really well run conference. This is a great learning experience for innovation in mining, and helps increase the reach for Australian METS providers.”

Major sponsor Schneider Electric’s booth was an impressive one in the exhibition

Over networking drinks, delegates and sponsors played blackjack, roulette and craps (no real money was gambled!)

The Etihad Business Class Booth was one of the most popular over the two days

Delegates and sponsors mingled and shared ideas right from the start

Austmine members only got additional intensive networking with senior executives from Anglo American, Gold Fields, Northparkes and Centennial Coal at the PwC sponsored speed networking session “Meet the Miners”

David Moult, CEO, Centennial Coal and Brendan Pearson, Chief Executive, Minerals Council of Australia enjoyed a chat at the Industry Leaders’ Dinner

RCT were kept busy with enquiries throughout the conference

It was one of the best conferences I have attended, and I’ve attended a lot over the years…it really was a great conference, with the theme spot on to where the industry is heading – so thanks.”
