B

Sm,

REPORT.

OFFICE OF THE GovERNMENT STATIST,

Melbourne, 12th November, 1888.

I have the honour to forward herewith the completed Australasian Statistics for the year I 887.

2. Preliminary tables embracing the leading features of these Statistics were forwarded to the Government Printer, on the 9th ultimo, in order that they mig·ht he published for general information. These preliminary tables appeared in the Gove1·nment Gazette three days afterwards.

J. The tables now given differ but sligl1tly in form from those published last year. One fresh table (XX.) has been added, showing returns of the Savings Banks in the different colonies.

4· The Statistics of Fiji, being necessarily different in form from those of the other colonies, are, as usual, published separately after the others. They now embrace returns extending over ten years.

5. The present being the fifteenth issue of the Australasian Statistics, the folding sheet at the commencement now contains a summary of items for each year, from I 873 to I 887.

6. I have often pointed out that in consequence of the £<tilure of the Immigl·ation Office authorities to obtain complete accounts of emigration by the seahoard, the population of all the colonies is liable to he over-estimated. To rectify this, an allowanec has for several years heen made in Victoria and New South \Vales, such allowance amounting in I887 alone to 5,988 in the former, and 6,351 in the latter. These numbers have accordingly been deducted from the respective totals, the effect being that the populations given for those two colonies are in all probability approximately correct. So much, however, cannot he said for the population statements given for the other colonies making no such allowance, which~ together with the statements for the Australian continent and the whole of Australasia, nrc doubtless to a greater or less extent too high.

7. It should he pointed out that, in Victoria, cross entries arc, in almost all cases exeluded fi·om the statements of revenue and expenditure. \V m·e this not done the figures would manifestly he much higher than those now given. The effect of this exclusion is that the Victorian statements arc strietly comparable with those of hut few of the other colonies, in some of which there seems a tendency rather to swell the returns by the multiplication of cross entries than to condense and simplify them hy omitting as many of sueh entries as possible.

8. The information ernbodied in the tables now suhmitted will, as on former occasions, be freely used and eommented upon in the uext and subsequent issues of the Victorian Year- Book.

I have the honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant,

HENRY HEYLYN HAYTER, Government Statist.

The Honorable the Chief Secretary.
