Cycling

Resource: Redlands Cycling and Walking Guide (includes maps)

Safer cyclingEveryone should know the road rules before heading out for a ride. Here are the main safety tips and road rules for cyclists, but if you have more questions, please ring Queensland Transport on 3253 4437.

Legal requirements:• wear an approved helmet that is correctly fitted and securely fastened• obey all road rules• use hand signals to indicate stopping or turning• cyclists are required to have at least one brake and bell in working order• use front and rear lights when travelling at night• do not ‘double’ anyone• at least one hand must be on the handlebars at all times• never ride your bike across a pedestrian crossing

Sharing pathsIn Redland Shire, cyclists can ride on any footpath except in certain commercial and retail centres. The following tips should help you share our paths safely:

• give way to pedestrians• keep left at all times• pass on the right• sound your bell as you approach pedestrians to warn that you are about to pass on the right (especially from behind)• control your speed – do not exceed speed limits• take care at blind corners• allow adequate braking distance, break gently, avoid skidding• slow down if the path is crowded• be predictable – avoid crashes by travelling in a straight line – do not weave • check the path in front and behind is clear before you overtake or change direction – pass with care

• hand signal your intentions• bikes must have front and rear lights when riding at night• scooters, skateboarders and rollerbladers must give way to cyclists

TrainsYou can take a bicycle on Citytrain services outside of peak flow service times. Bicycle travel must be completed by 7.00am inbound and 3.00pm outbound.

Bicycle lockers and parking rails are provided at all train stations. A nominal fee is payable for the use of lockers.

Ferries and bargesBicycles can be carried onto all vehicle barges to the Bay Islands and North Stradbroke Island. This is the preferred method of transport to avoid inconvenience to other pas-sengers.

Passengers can take bikes on some passenger ferry ser-vices (subject to space availability). Check with individual operators on current policy.

Redlands Advisory Group on Seniors Issues

Getting home after discharge from hospitalIt is the patient’s responsibility to make their own way home after discharge so it is important to plan the trip home in advance.

It is always preferred a discharged patient be escorted home by a family member or carer in a private vehicle or taxi.

For patients unable to travel by car, ambulance transport can be arranged by hospital staff but bookings need to be made in advance (usually 2-3 days).

Community transport is not available to transport discharged patients.

If a bay island resident is discharged from Redland Hospital at a time when they are unable to access ferry services, they should alert a hospital staff member of their need to access short-term accommodation at Rotary Lodge. The Lodge is located in the grounds of Redland Hospital and has two self-contained units, each accommodating up to two people. For more information about Rotary Lodge, contact Redland Hospital on 3488 3111.

Tips for a smooth hospital discharge:

• Prior to admission, ask a support person for assistance to get home and to have your house ready for your return (eg. hiring aids if necessary, shopping).

• If you live independently in a retirement village, let management know you are going to hospital and an estimated return date.

• If you live independently at home, let a trusted neighbour know you are going to hospital and an estimated return date.

• On admission:

a) For residents living in a low or high care facility, have the name of a contact person from the facility ready to help with appropriate discharge.

b) Have the contact details of your support person ready.

c) Advise if there will be nobody at home to care for you on your return.

• Every patient discharged should receive a Nursing and Medical Discharge Summary. If it is not provided, ask for one before leaving the hospital.

Mobility aids on public transport Source: Accessible Public Transport National Advisory Committee

What you need to know when buying a mobility aidTo enhance safety and accessibility on public transport, mobility aids need to meet certain standardised specifications:

• fit within an allocated space of 1300mm x 800mm• have a maximum width of less than 750mm up to 300mm from the ground• negotiate a taxi door height of 1400mm• turn 180 degrees within an area 2070mm x 1540mm• cross a horizontal gap up to 40mm wide• mount a vertical rise (bump) up to 12mm• cross grating gaps up to 13mm wide and 150mm long• negotiate a 1:14 grade unassisted (eg. ramp)• negotiate up to a 1:8 grade where the ramp is less than 1520mm• negotiate a 1:4 grade with assistance (eg. ramp)• have effective braking systems to maintain stability• have appropriate anchoring points if required by transport operators or providers• comply with regulations governing the carriage of batteries on public transport• be able to transfer to a seat in a taxi if required by the transport operator or provider• must be able to travel in the direction determined by the transport operator or provider

Boarding devices (eg. ramps) are able to support a total weight up to 300kg.

Things to check with the transport provider

• Are anchoring points available?• Does the public transport operator require the mobility aid to be anchored?• Does your local service provider/s offer practice sessions (getting on and off public transport)?
