The Australian Aboriginal flag represents Indigenous Australians. It is one of the official "Flags of Australia", and holds special legal and political status, but it is not the "Australian National Flag". It was designed in 1971 by Aboriginal artist Harold Thomas

Federation Square (also colloquially contracted to Fed Square) is a civic centre and cultural precinct opened in 2002 in the city of Melbourne

It is a mixed-use development covering an area of 3.2 hectare and centered around two major public spaces, open squares (St. Paul's Court and The Square) and one covered (The Atrium) built on top of a concrete deck over busy railway lines

Fed Square is where cultures meet, friends meet, minds meet and worlds meet. No wonder all of Melbourne is saying, 'Meet you at Fed Square!’

Its design has caused much controversy since its first planning and continued to divide opinion after its opening. Despite this, the precinct continues to expand.

Unlike many Australian landmarks, it was not opened by the Queen, nor was she invited to its unveiling.

 The selection of architects for Federation Square was based on an open, international, two-stage design competition, which demanded the design of a new civic square capable of accommodating up to 20,000 people in an open-air amphitheatre

In addition, the project included cultural and commercial buildings, on a 3.8ha block to be built above the Jolimont rail yards.

The rationalization of the Jolimont rail yards, the demolition of the universally despised Gas and Fuel Towers, and the celebration of Australia's Centenary of Federation, provided the impetus for the completion of this important project.
