May to July in Australia. The trees require a period o chilling or

    the buds to be ruitul.

    Growing Regions

Almonds are commercially produced in very ew locations

around the world, requiring a Mediterranean climate: cold

winters during dormancy and warmer summers to develop

the nut. Producing areas are urther restricted by the need

or suitable land and water availability and reliably dry

    weather during harvest.

Australian almonds are predominantly grown across our

Australian states in fve major growing ares:

Adelaide & Riverland regions o South Australia (SA) Riverina region o New South Wales (NSW)

Sunraysia region o Victoria (VIC); and the

Swan region o Western Australia (WA)

    Environment & Quality

Almonds are a high value, horticultural crop and are a

naturally efcient converter o water into nutritious ood.

Almonds have a history o producing a high value return per

megalitre o water applied. Sophisticated irrigation systems

ensure that water application matches tree requirements,

all orchards are under pressurised systems with 91% o

plantings are under drip irrigation, and the remainder under

    low level sprinklers.

Australias inland irrigated horticulture is known or its

natural advantages, including avourable climatic conditions

and low incidence o pest and disease, providing; cost

advantages, high yields, and excellent product integrity andquality.

The importance o quality is recognised throughout the

entire supply chain, rom grower, processor and marketer,

with world leading on-arm management practices, and

commitment to industry quality standards and testing

    programs.

Australias product quality and counter-seasonality allows

access to high value market segments.

Total Australian almond acreage has increased more than

fve old over the past ten years rom 5,097 hectares (12,595

    acres) 2001 to 30,390 hectares (75,095 acres) in 2011.

Approximately 34% o Australian almond plantings are eight

years and older and have reach ull maturity, and a urther

57% are cropping, but not yet to ull yields. 9% o total

almond plantings are not yet bearing, being less than 3 years

    old.

The major almond variety, Nonpareil (46%), is not sel ertileand requires pollination rom other almond varieties known

    Production

Australian Almond production in 2011 totalled 37,626

tonnes o nut kernel. Future production increases will occur

    as young plantings mature.

Based on existing plantings, productive capacity is orecast

to reach 88,000 tonnes o kernel by 2016, more than double

    the 2011 production.

Australia is the third largest producer o almonds in the

world, currently producing around 3.5% o world almonds.

Australia will surpass Spain in the next ew years to become

the worlds second largest almond producer, behind the

USA which dominates world production, .with recent crops

    producing 1,000,000 tonnes o kernel.

Increasing Australian production has outstripped the size

o the domestic market during the past decade and now the

tonnage exported is signifcantly greater than that consumed

at home. This dependence on export sales is increasing

rapidly with a our to one ratio o exports to domestic sales
