contactACTHealthifyouhaveanyhealthconcerns.5DisinfectionRegulardisinfectionofrainwaterheldindomestictanksisnotconsiderednecessaryinmostcasesandisgenerallyonlyrecommendedasaremedialaction.Asthemicrobiologicalqualityofthewaterattimesmaynotbeasgoodasreticulatedwatersupplies,peoplesuchastheveryyoungorelderly,orimmuno-compromisedshouldconsiderboilingthewaterbeforeconsumptionorforuseinfoodpreparation.Heatingandholdingtherainwateratarollingboilforoneminuteormorewillkillanyharmfulmicroorganisms.ChlorinationiseffectiveagainstharmfulbacteriaandmanyvirusesbuthaslimitedeffectsagainstprotozoasuchasGiardia andCryptosporidium.Itshouldbenotedthattheeffectivenessofchlorineisshortlivedanditwillonlyactonwhatisinthetankatthetimeofdosing.Iftherainwaterissuspectedasbeingapossiblecauseofgastricillness,thentherainwatertankandcatchmentareashouldbeinspectedandappropriateremedialactiontaken.Roof materials Roofsconstructedofcementorterracottatiles,Colorbond,galvanisedsteel,Zincalume,fibrouscement,polycarbonate,fibreglassorslateshouldbesuitableforthecollectionofdrinkingwater.Ifindoubtgetaclearancefromthemanufacturer.Steelcladdingsshouldbefreeofcorrosion.Lead flashing Asaprecautionleadflashingshouldnotbeonthosepartsoftheroofusedasadrinkingwatercatchmentarea.Inthecaseofanexistingroof,leadflashingshouldbereplacedifpossible,althoughitmaybepossibletocoattheflashingwithsuitableroofpaint.Askyourpaintsupplierforadvice.Paints and and building approvalsTheACTPlanningandLandAuthorityrequiresthelocation,sizeandinstallationofrainwatertankstobeappropriatetothestreetscapecharacterandnottoimpactontheamenityofresidents.Iftherainwatertankisforwardofthefrontbuildinglineitisusuallyrequired: tohaveaminimumsetbackfromthefrontboundarynotlessthan50%oftheminimumsetbackapplicabletothatproperty, nottoreduceviewstothestreetfromwindows, nottoreducesolaraccessordaylighttohabitablerooms,and
