Like a coral reef, an orchestra is an ecosystem comprising individual organisms functioning symbiotically within a specific measurement of surface. Though it is the whole that attracts, it is of course the particularised components that create the entity.

For this year’s brochure, I have essayed a collection of photos of the individual organisms fashioning the ACO. Perhaps you would care to consider some of their diverse features, discrete and joint:

Rebecca, who has emerged from our Emerging Artist program, is also a practising doctor; Steve is an accomplished architect; old friends of Helena believe her London accent has been denuded by the 17 years she has lived in Sydney; Chris’ eyebrow piercing has a rude word on it, but this belies his warm-hearted interior; some think Mark resembles George Clooney; Melissa practised ballet and remains enviably flexible; does Max exhibit traits of the elusive Quebecois character?; Julian valiantly improves his tube-riding prowess at Curl Curl and boasts an impressive general knowledge which he happily disseminates in pubs; as evidenced by his photo, Tipi is quite simply gorgeous; Aiko is our number one advocate in and for Japan; Ilya has come to us from Russia through Israel, his is a wonderfully photogenic face and he is good at answering queries about computers; Alice is originally from Perth and lovingly plays her baroque violin; Maddy is a statuesque, evolved Emerging Artist hailing from Perth and, like Chris, plays an Australian instrument by AE Smith; Satu is from Japan, Finland, Germany and Australia and is the proud player of Australia’s Strad; Nikki is a super-mum (pre-requisite, she knits); Richard is a disciple of Derek Hynd’s finless surfing: being a disciple I get to write the gospel.

AUSTRALIAN ChAMBER ORChESTRAInternationally renowned for inspired programming and the rapturous response of audiences and critics, the Australian Chamber Orchestra is a product of our country’s vibrant, adventurous and enquiring spirit. In performances across Australia, around the world and on many recordings, the ACO moves hearts and stimulates minds with repertoire spanning six centuries and a vitality and virtuosity unmatched by other ensembles.

Richard Tognetti was appointed Artistic Director and Lead Violin in 1989. Under his inspiring leadership, the ACO performs as a flexible and versatile ‘ensemble of soloists’, on modern and period instruments, as a chamber group, symphony orchestra and electro-acoustic collective. The ACO’s unique artistic style encompasses masterworks of the classical repertoire, innovative cross-artform projects and a vigorous commissioning program. In a nod to past traditions, only the cellists are seated – the resulting sense of energy and individuality is one of the most commented-upon elements of ACO performances.

Forty-nine international tours across Asia, Europe and the USA have drawn outstanding reviews for the ACO’s performances at the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein and Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center.

The ACO has made many acclaimed recordings for labels including ABC Classics, BIS, Sony, Hyperion, EMI and Chandos (see aco.com.au/shop). Highlights include the three-time ARIA Award-winning Bach recordings and complete Mozart Violin Concertos. The ACO appears in the television series Classical Destinations II and the award-winning film Musica Surfica.

Several of the ACO’s musicians perform with spectacularly fine instruments. Tognetti plays a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin, on loan from an anonymous Australian benefactor. Principal Cello Timo-Veikko Valve plays a 1729 Giuseppe Guarneri filius Andreæ cello, on loan from Mr Peter Weiss AM. Principal 2nd Violin Helena Rathbone plays a 1759 Guadagnini violin on loan from the Commonwealth Bank Group. Assistant Leader Satu Vänskä plays a 1728/29 Stradivarius violin owned by the ACO Instrument Fund, which gives investors and donors the opportunity to participate in the ownership of historic instruments.

The ACO’s ambitious national education program includes mentoring of outstanding young musicians, the elite training and regional touring orchestra ACO2 and schools programs.

ChOPIN & MENDELSSOhN’S OCTET

TOUR ONE

“Polina has Russia in her blood and a fantastic dichotomy in her character: insouciance that belies incredible passion. Chopin is her lingua franca.” Richard Tognetti

Combining sparkling virtuosity with tender lyricism, Chopin’s First Piano Concerto is an ideal vehicle for the unique talents of Polina Leschenko. Although Henryk Górecki is best known for his haunting and heartfelt Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, his Piano Concerto bristles with driving rhythms and energy.

Mendelssohn’s Octet is a staple of the ACO’s repertoire, its carefree exuberance belying its fiendish technical intricacies.

“The enthusiasm and tightness of the ACO was nowhere better shown than in the Mendelssohn with its joyful, sweeping opening movement, quicksilver scherzo and romping closing figure.” Cumberland Newspapers

“Eight players from the orchestra revelled in the musical high jinks of Mendelssohn’s Octet.” Adelaide Advertiser

The tonal riches of the ACO’s three legendary violins – Stradivari, Guarneri and Guadagnini – are revealed in Richard Tognetti’s specially created arrangement of Paganini’s dazzling Caprices.

TOUR TWO

ThE hILLIARDENSEMBLE

“What an honour: the greatest small vocal ensemble in the world collaborating with the ACO.” Richard Tognetti

The Hilliard Ensemble is famous for mesmerising performances and chart-topping recordings of early and contemporary vocal music. Gregorian chant and French medieval hymn hypnotically intertwine with Edwards’ orchestral setting of Veni Creator Spiritus (Come Holy Spirit). A cappella prayers from 15th century England and Arvo Pärt join Raskatov’s Russian Orthodox chant setting, written for The Hilliard Ensemble and string orchestra.

This concert also celebrates the luscious ACO string sound with two opulent works by Elgar and Arensky after Tchaikovsky.

NATIONAL TOUR PARTNER

Danielle de Niese was born in Melbourne and won Young Talent Time aged nine, then moved to Los Angeles, won an Emmy and made her debut with the LA Opera aged 15. She has blossomed into one of the hottest properties in opera, enrapturing audiences in roles like Cleopatra, Euridice and Susanna at Glyndebourne, the Metropolitan Opera and on screen.

To celebrate her professional debut in her home country, de Niese sings a specially commissioned Australian work, which also marks the centenary of Australia’s Nobel laureate Patrick White. She also shines in Mozart’s joyous Exsultate jubilate, matched with a flourish by a symphony from one of Mozart’s early operas.

Schubert’s haunting song, Death and the Maiden, is at the heart of his famous and dramatic quartet.

TROUT QUINTET & QUARTET fOR ThE END Of TIME

“The Trout Quintet, inspired by fish, is Schubert’s grand leisurely musical conversation with fellow humans. The Quartet for the End of Time, inspired in small part by birds, is Messiaen’s communion with the heavens.

Ostensibly contrasting works that fit together like continents.” Richard Tognetti

TOUR fOUR // PRESENTED By TRANSfIELD

This concert pairs two great works inspired by very different experiences away from home, both written for the musicians available and, as a result, for unusual combinations of instruments.

Aged 22, Schubert had his first holiday in the country. In the Trout, he captures the mood of those carefree summer days and his ecstatic delight in the countryside, in warm, beguiling melodies and harmonies.

A prisoner of war, Messiaen wrote the Quartet for the End of Time for the musicians he found in the camp, premiering it to an audience of inmates and guards. “Never,” he said, “was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension.” Critic Alex Ross calls it “the most ethereally beautiful music of the 20th century...as overpowering now as it was on that frigid night in 1941.”

ACO Principals are joined by clarinettist Paul Dean and dynamic young Israeli-Palestinian pianist Saleem Abboud Ashkar, making his Australian debut.

PRESENTED By ThE ACO AND TURA NEW MUSIC

“A desert odyssey is an obligatory undertaking for any Australian. This odyssey takes us to where the desert meets the ocean and opens up our dialogue between surfing, the oldest extant musical

culture on earth and the music we play.” Richard Tognetti

In his most adventurous project to date, Richard Tognetti takes musicians and surfers to the rugged surf coast and tough desert landscape of northern Western Australia to create a new performance piece at the intersection of music and nature.

Travelling with Tognetti from Darwin to Perth via world heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, making music and surfing with the locals along the way, is a remarkable collection of artists: photographer Jon Frank, director Mick Sowry, composer Iain Grandage, didjeridu master Mark Atkins and the young musicians of ACO

2.

Together they’ll create a performance using music and film to delve further into the links between surfing, the ocean, landscape and music previously illuminated in Musica Surfica and The Glide. Tognetti also directs ACO

2, the next generation of

Australia’s top string players, in Shostakovich, Bach and more.

BEEThOVEN 9, ODE TO JOy

The ACO’s internationally-acclaimed Beethoven symphony series reaches its climax with Symphony No.9, featuring one of the finest British choirs and an exceptional line-up of soloists.

Critics called the ACO’s recent Beethoven concert in London “the finest concert of the summer” and spoke of “thrilling playing”, “vibrant drive” and “total involvement”, concluding, “this compact chamber orchestra matches anything Europe can offer in energy, precision and interpretative rigour.”

Building to the symphony, a trio of serene yet intense works, swelling to Beethoven’s depiction of a sea voyage.

TOUR SIX // PRESENTED By VANgUARD

One of the world’s finest keyboard players, respected conductor and historian, and director of the Academy of Ancient Music, musical firebrand Richard Egarr directs this concert of rousing Baroque music from the harpsichord and performs Mozart’s delightful Piano Concerto No.12 on the fortepiano.

Egarr’s program displays all the invention and innovation that abounded through the 17th and 18th centuries, calling on virtuosic techniques that still excite the ear. Egarr introduces the music in talks one hour before each concert.

RUSSIAN VISIONS

As soon as he played with the ACO, Steven Osborne wanted to return with Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.1, for it requires an immensely virtuosic string orchestra, flexibility and humour veering on craziness. The time has now come with this all-Russian concert.

Brimming with carefree energy, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir is an exuberant postcard from an Italian summer holiday. “The ACO...set the audience in a spin with its heady version of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence. Richard Tognetti was intent on making the most of the Russian nostalgia, romancing his violins, sending the audience into a clapping frenzy.” Herald Sun

SPECIAL EVENT

SyDNEy DANCE COMPANy

A collaboration between our two Australian but international companies is long overdue. Rameau was the king of French Baroque drama. In his time, the music served the drama.

Ironically, though, it is the music that has survived.” Richard Tognetti

A mutual passion for Rameau’s perfumed and powerful French Baroque dance music sparks this new production by Rafael Bonachela and Richard Tognetti. Rameau’s flair for rhythm and melody, and feeling for choreography, leads many to name him the greatest-ever ballet composer, certainly the most influential. Bonachela’s dynamic choreography, innate musicality and theatricality serve to illuminate this brilliant music.

“Sydney Dance Company is at the peak of its powers...some of the most exciting contemporary dance I’ve seen in years.” Sun-Herald
