We are currently in Moree and waiting for other members of Vanners Club to arrive so

that we can commence our trip to the Multiple District Convention. It will take us about

a month to get there and on the way, we will visit other Lions Clubs and also do some

sightseeing.

Lion Jeffrey Sproal, Secretary of the Lions Vanners Club, has advised that the

Vanners Club website is located as follows:

https://mdlionsvannersclub.wordpress.com/

Copy that web address into the address bar on your web browser and away you go.

Follow the instructions and once you get to the blog look for the follow-on button and

press it. It is usually found at the bottom of the page right hand corner. From this you

will be able to follow the trip.

The weather has been very wet up North, so I hope it will have stopped prior to our

departure and will be drying out quickly. A good supply of Aerogard is required as

usually after the rains in FNQ as the sand flies and mosquitoes are in abundance.

Will catch up with everyone in Townsville and look forward to the Convention, the first

for our New Dynamic Club.

PRESIDENTS REPORT May 2018

Dear Lions

The Convention is now over and our Members are off on their travels or making their

way home as we are presently.

Travelling to the Convention with the Vanners Club was great. It was really good to

catch up with old Members of the Vanners Club and some new Members. We

swapped stories, learnt how other clubs functioned and had some really Happy

Hours, sometimes with other Lions Clubs from Towns we were visiting. A great way

to go to a Convention.

The Convention was a very busy time and the business session was really drawn out

much to the dismay of the attendees. The guest speakers were very interesting,

especially the Marine Scientist who gave us so much information on deadly

poisonous creatures in the sea such as Irukandji and Box jellyfish that there were

many Lions who will never go back in the sea again. The Ball was enjoyable, with

the Army Band from the local Barracks who gave our memories an uplift with so

many old nostalgic tunes. We had 10 of our own Members in attendance and hope

to see more Members at next year’s event as it is much closer at Geelong. Adelaide

has put their hands up for 2020 and Canberra 2021.

Our changeover is at Junes Meeting so look forward to having everybody on line.

Yours in Lionism

Lions 178, Total Lions 830. Lions Partners 117, Leos 17, Lionesses 30, others 14

Total non-Lions 178. Grand Total at Convention 1008.

Next on the program was the Youth Forum conducted by Lion Nathan Toll, this

forum was very popular, with lots of questions from the floor. Well worth listening to

the views of those involved on the panel, current and past Leos, Youth Exchange

Participants, Youth of the Year entrants and the MD201 National Coordinator of the

Youth and Community Service Committee Rosemary Gale.

PDG Doug Winterflood gave a very informative presentation on Lions Clubs in

Papua New Guinea. PDG Roley McAtee OAM provided an insight into work

undertake by LEHP and the Lifesaver Foundation. PID Ken Bird conducted a

Question and Answer session, with answers provided by the Management Team.

Next the Geelong 2019 Convention Committee presented what will be happening in

Geelong in 2019.

Voting then took place for the determination of the Category” B” Projects. The day

was concluded at 4.00pm.

The Gala Dinner was held at the Townsville Stadium. A great night, lots of fun and

great company.

Around the table: Pres Hazel and Ted Pickwell, Janice and Bernie Clifford, Bernie

and Jan Donchi, Tony and Lesley Petersen, Stewart and Gwyneth Payne

Sunday May 6th, 2018

Call to order was at 8.45am with a very Moving Remembrance Service.

PIP Barry Palmer OA presented PCC Bruce Hudgson with the Lions International

Presidents Medal.

Next on the agenda was the Leo of the Year, with the Public Speaking Winner from

the V Districts Leo Kieren Azzopardi, and the Leo of the Year was awarded to Leo

Mathew Boggan from the N Districts.

This was without doubt my favourite part of

the whole Convention, amazing young

people. The decision for the Public

Speaking and the Leo of the Year was

extremely difficult for the Judges.

The Key Note Speaker was Professor Rebecka Russell-Bennet QUT Business

School whose topic was “Strategies to Grow Membership”.

A number of presentations followed, Lions Christmas Cakes, and the Lions Stamp

Club presented $25000 to the Lions Children Mobility Foundation.

First item on the Program was the Final of the Youth of the

Year, with Tom Rockliff from 201T1 the Winner.

From 201N3 Lucy Witherdin was the Public Speaking

Winner.

All the Contestants were amazing and again a very difficult

decision for the Judges.

Information was then provided on the Australian Lions Foundation and the ANZI

Pacific Forum.

Associate Professor James Seymour entertained and horrified us all with a

presentation on the Lions & Jellyfish Research making the waters safer for

swimmers. No way am I going into any sea ever again!

The outgoing Council of Governors were presented, followed by a spotlight on the

Lioness Program and LCIF.

The Incoming Council of Governors were presented.

The Closing Ceremony was full of fun and left us all with raised spirits and looking

forward to Geelong.

The 66th MD Convention in Townsville was entertaining, full of great discussion and

debate, lots of fun and well worth the trip.

Spotlight on Member: Lion Jan Donchi

Following our Charter Night Dinner in February Lion Jan Donchi had an idea for a

thank you gift for the Kootingal & District Lions Club for their wonderful support and

the lovely table decorations they organised for the night. President Hazel agreed that

this would be a very useful gift.

Lion Jan was able to obtain some 50 Lions paper place mats that had been the

property of the former Port Macquarie City Lions Club, which Lion Jan then

laminated.

While we were at the MD

Convention Lion Jan was able to

present these to DGE David

Emanuel on behalf of our Lions

Club.

Lion Jan Donchi with DGE David

Emanuel presenting the

placemats,

.

Well Done! Lion Jan what a lovely

thought!

Imagine our surprise when DGE David showed us his personal pin for his incoming

year, we had no idea that his theme for the year was so similar to the placemats that

had been circulated in the past.
