Traditional Japanese Woodblock Printing

level 1Participants will have a unique opportunity to gain a practical understanding of the methods involved in traditional Japanese woodblock printing. Guest tutor Roslyn Kean will cover the history and origins of the process, carving techniques, tool sharpening and printmaking papers. Students will produce their own limited edition prints using this beautiful process and gain knowledge to continue with this method beyond the course. The printing is done by hand using age-old methods and water-based inks.

level 2This course is suitable for students who have previously attended a Traditional Japanese Woodblock Printing course at APW, as well as those students who intend to complete Level 1 as part of APW’s 2016 Summer School program. This course will enable students to build on their traditional Japanese woodblock printing skills to develop a more complex coloured image. Participants will print their own small edition using this beautiful method.

level 1Participants will learn the traditional etching skills that artists have employed for centuries. Discover how the old masters made their marks and create your own drawing on copper plates to produce a beautiful contemporary limited edition print. Learn the techniques of soft-ground and hard-ground and experiment with different mark marking, drawing and printing techniques. Participants will prepare a plate, transfer a drawing, etch the plate and print a small edition.

level 2For those who have previously attended an etching class at APW as well as students who complete APW Summer School Etching Level 1, this class explores intaglio printmaking through the creation of tonal imagery. Discover how to paint directly onto the copper plate to create painterly marks and use acid like watercolour – perfect for artists who enjoy the freedom of using the brush. Participants will be introduced to the techniques of aquatint, sugar-lift, spit-bite and open bite, and have the opportunity to experiment with ways of drawing and printing the plates to produce rich, tonal images.

This workshop will explore drawing and painting techniques including lithographic pencil, crayon and tusche washes. Learn how to prepare the finely grained Bavarian limestone blocks, process a drawing, prepare the paper and set up for printing. Participants will have an opportunity to print a limited edition.

Plate This workshop will allow students to gain an insight into the practicalities of printing from aluminium lithography plates. Participants will learn how to prepare paper, registration techniques and use APW’s manual and electric printing presses to produce a small edition of prints.

linocut & Woodcut Explore the bold and graphic nature of multi-colour wood and linoblock printing. Participants will learn how to prepare wood and lino blocks, cut an image, prepare paper and print a limited edition. Methods of cutting, inking and rolling-up, and registration techniques to produce a reduction lino block and two-colour wood blocks will also be taught. This workshop covers the fascinating world of traditional printing, working on APW’s antique Columbian and Albion relief presses to create your own limited edition of prints.

Combo #1 Collagraph : Carborundum : embossing

Learn how to construct a simple low-tech printable plate using cardboard. Explore the graphic, sculptural or painterly possibilities of collagraph and carborundum printmaking. Create plates that can be printed either as intaglio or relief images, or as combinations of the two. Emboss your designs on wet and dry paper. These techniques are ideal for teachers to take back to the classroom and for secondary students preparing their art folios.

Construct spontaneous and colourful monotypes, merging painting and printmaking, to create beautiful one-of-a-kind prints. Learn how to combine the mediums and use chine-collé techniques to create multi-plate images, with watercolours and oil-based inks. Pick up a combination of skills and techniques in this class. Use drawings or photographs as guides to draw, scratch and incise directly into perspex plates, creating images with texture and tone. Construct spontaneous and colourful monotypes, merging painting and printmaking, to create beautiful one-of-a-kind prints. Traditional Japanese Woodblock Printing

level 1Participants will have a unique opportunity to gain a practical understanding of the methods involved in traditional Japanese woodblock printing. Guest tutor Roslyn Kean will cover the history and origins of the process, carving techniques, tool sharpening and printmaking papers. Students will produce their own limited edition prints using this beautiful process and gain knowledge to continue with this method beyond the course. The printing is done by hand using age-old methods and water-based inks.

level 2This course is suitable for students who have previously attended a Traditional Japanese Woodblock Printing course at APW, as well as those students who intend to complete Level 1 as part of APW’s 2016 Summer School program. This course will enable students to build on their traditional Japanese woodblock printing skills to develop a more complex coloured image. Participants will print their own small edition using this beautiful method.

level 1Participants will learn the traditional etching skills that artists have employed for centuries. Discover how the old masters made their marks and create your own drawing on copper plates to produce a beautiful contemporary limited edition print. Learn the techniques of soft-ground and hard-ground and experiment with different mark marking, drawing and printing techniques. Participants will prepare a plate, transfer a drawing, etch the plate and print a small edition.

level 2For those who have previously attended an etching class at APW as well as students who complete APW Summer School Etching Level 1, this class explores intaglio printmaking through the creation of tonal imagery. Discover how to paint directly onto the copper plate to create painterly marks and use acid like watercolour – perfect for artists who enjoy the freedom of using the brush. Participants will be introduced to the techniques of aquatint, sugar-lift, spit-bite and open bite, and have the opportunity to experiment with ways of drawing and printing the plates to produce rich, tonal images.

stoneParticipants in this class will gain an insight into this traditional printmaking process, often described as the most painterly of printmaking techniques. This workshop will explore drawing and painting techniques including lithographic pencil, crayon and tusche washes. Learn how to prepare the finely grained Bavarian limestone blocks, process a drawing, prepare the paper and set up for printing. Participants will have an opportunity to print a limited edition.

Plate This workshop will allow students to gain an insight into the practicalities of printing from aluminium lithography plates. Learn how to transfer drawings directly onto the plate with oxide papers. Explore different drawing techniques using lithography pencils, crayons and tusche washes to create different marks. Participants will learn how to prepare paper, registration techniques and use APW’s manual and electric printing presses to produce a small edition of prints.

linocut & Woodcut Explore the bold and graphic nature of multi-colour wood and linoblock printing. Participants will learn how to prepare wood and lino blocks, cut an image, prepare paper and print a limited edition. Methods of cutting, inking and rolling-up, and registration techniques to produce a reduction lino block and two-colour wood blocks will also be taught. This workshop covers the fascinating world of traditional printing, working on APW’s antique Columbian and Albion relief presses to create your own limited edition of prints.

Learn how to construct a simple low-tech printable plate using cardboard. Explore the graphic, sculptural or painterly possibilities of collagraph and carborundum printmaking. Create plates that can be printed either as intaglio or relief images, or as combinations of the two. Emboss your designs on wet and dry paper. Australian Print Workshop’s Summer School program is a great opportunity to explore your interest in printmaking with guidance and tuition from highly skilled printers.

Located in the heart of vibrant Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Australian Print Workshop’s world-class printmaking facilities are spacious and air-conditioned, giving class participants access to well-maintained printing presses and equipment.

Most APW printmaking classes are suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills or further their creative development. The Summer School program also includes Level 2 classes in Traditional Japanese Woodblock Printing and Etching, which require prior experience.

APW classes are ideal for art teachers preparing for the school year, as well as senior secondary students wanting to develop their art folio.

All classes are over three consecutive days. Class fees include a kit of essential printmaking materials.
