The Australian Unemployment Union is an organisation run by the unemployed, for the unemployed.

Our mission at the AUU is to protect the common interests of the 730,000 or so Australians who are currently unemployed. If you are currently dependent on the Newstart allowance, then we want to hear about your concerns with Centrelink and work with you to resolve them.

A recent study by the Melbourne Institute has shown that the current basic rate of Newstart ($502 per fortnight) provides less than half of what Australians need to live out of poverty.

This is one of the many concerns of the AUU. What others do you have?

JOIN NOW AND HAVE YOUR SAY!

On 1 January 2015, the Abbott government plans to cut all under 30 year olds from the Newstart unemployment benefit for 6 months.

This change will force at least 110,000 people per year into a life of extreme poverty, homelessness and hunger.

After 6 months of extreme poverty, the government will then force all unemployed who are under 30 to do 25 hours Work for the Dole per week. How will this help the unemployed find work?

Its not just the Unemployed who is under attack. In addition to cutting $1.9 billion from Unemployment benefits over the next 4 years, the Abbott government also plans to:

• Cut $6.2 billion from the Disabled and the Sick

• Cut $4.3 billion from Tertiary Education

• Cut $3.3 billion from Pensioners

All those dependent upon Centrelink are therefore encouraged to join us and fight these changes. It’s time to fight back!

Today in Australia, collecting unemployment benefits is a frustrating, humiliating and costly experience.

This is because:• Contacting Centrelink is a joke. Due to large staff

cuts, calling or visiting Centrelink can often take the entire day. For many who call Centrelink on their mobiles, this will lead to $100+ phone bills.

• Job Agencies routinely advertise work, but fail to provide any. If the job agents can’t find work, then how are the unemployed meant to?

• In Victoria, there are nine unemployed people for every job vacancy. Despite this, unemployed Australians are blamed and shamed for not finding work. This is not fair.

• Centrelink constantly threaten the unemployed with suspension. For most unemployed Australians, this means they are only one missed appointment away from homelessness and extreme poverty.
