CULTURE & TRADITIONSEVERYDAY CUSTOMS: Peace and quiet are highly valued by Austrians who live outside the cities. They are friendly and easy-going people who tend to keep up their traditions, especially in the mountainous regions. Austrians, especially the older generation, tend to be very courteous, and they expect the same from visitors. When asked for directions, Austrians will always do their best to help. The Austrians like polite formalities, though handkissing is no longer the norm. It is the exception to go on to first-name terms immediately. Forms of address such as Herr Doktor and Herr Ober (headwaiter) can be used liberally. It is worth knowing a few phrases, such as, when meeting someone, Wie geht es Ihnen?, to enquire after their health. In the morning, Guten Morgen is the standard greeting, at lunchtime Mahlzeit, later in the day Guten Tag. Everywhere and at any time Grss Gott is used, literally greet the Lord.SEASONS: Summer: June 1 - Aug. 31st, autumn: Sept. 1 - Nov. 30th, Winter: Dec. 1st - Feb. 28th/29th, Spring: Mar. 1st - May 31stCELEBRATIONS: Please refer to http://www.austria.info/uk/events. CLOTHINGAustrians tend to wear clothing that is quite formal and stylish. Very smart casual or smart business orientated clothes will carry you through for business, sight-seeing and for eating out. Dark colors are generally more popular, as are solid colors. No t-shirts, no baseball caps, no athletic/exercise suits - unless of course you are exercising. If you can, avoid wearing sneakers as they will mark you out as a tourist.
