Bill is also a highly respected photographer, commended atthe Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards in London, with his workfeaturing in national publications and advertising.Bill will be heading to Rochdale for the Literature & Ideas Festival onSunday 25th October, where he’ll be talking about his life and art.

Style caught up with Bill ahead of his visit toRochdale, to discuss life in the limelight andbehind the lens…
When did you first start acting? When I was at prep school. The first play I did wasentirely in Latin, outside a swimming pool.
You’ve had some huge storylinesrecently on Emmerdale… what’s instore for James?I honestly have absolutely no idea. The producerand writers keep things very close to their chests! We’ve all really enjoyed filming the recentstorylines though... filming explosions andmassive disagreements in general is always goodfun, and the Bartons in particular have had a lot ofgreat stuff to get their teeth into. James is basicallytrying to keep his family together, whilst loads ofdifferent factors conspire to tear it apart.
Will it be happily ever after for Jamesand Emma?I’d be very surprised if it was... I don’t think theylived particularly happily together when they weremarried before. They’re an interesting couple...they definitely love each other, but lots of otherstuff tends to get in the way of that and makes lifedifficult... they’re trying very hard to make a go ofit though, so fingers crossed for them!
The Bartons have made quite an impacton the village… will they be stickingaround?
I hope so. We’ve all really enjoyed being in theshow thus far... Anthony (Pete), Mike (Ross), Joe(Finn) and Gillian (Emma) are all terrific actors, and great to work with. They’ve built some reallybrilliant characters, so long may that continue...
What has been your favourite televisionor theatre role? That’s a tricky one. You tend to enjoy differentthings for different reasons. I think the mostdifficult (and rewarding) thing I’ve done was alittle known American play called The Hairy Ape,by Eugene O’Neill. I had to play “Yank”, a nativeNew York stoker of a Transatlantic Ocean Liner, who ends up falling in love with a gorilla. It’s anextraordinary play, very beautiful in parts, but Ihad to learn to do a New York accent and put ontwo stone of muscle to play him.
Do you prefer television or stage?Actually, I really like both. They’re both verydifferent, but equally rewarding in their own ways.I love the rehearsal aspect of theatre – you work onsomething day in day out for 3 or 4 weeks beforeyou show it to anyone, which gives you loads ofopportunity to experiment, try things out and takemassive risks – things that may ultimately neversee the light of day, but that help you on the way toworking out your character and their journeythrough the play. On the other hand, TV is greatfor just getting out of the way of yourself andcommitting – we film up to 40 pages a day onEmmerdale with no rehearsal, so it tends to bevery instinctive - there’s a real adrenaline thatcomes from making instant decisions and stickingto them.
What would be your dream role?Well I’m very happy exploring the world of JamesBarton at the moment. But one day, I’ve alwaysfancied having a go at Willy Loman in Arthur
Miller’s play “Death of a Salesman”. Also I’ve gotquite close to playing Macbeth a couple of times –he’s a really fascinating character, torn in so manydifferent ways, and I’d definitely love to play himat some point.
You’re a keen landscape photographer, when did you get into photography? Areyou self taught?I’ve been taking photographs since I was 6, startingwith a Kodak Instamatic. More recently, I’ve beentaking photographs, and landscape photographs inparticular, since about 2010. I really love the sheerscale of it, the beauty of it, and the peace and quietof it. You can see the sort of thing I do on mywebsite: www.billwardphotography.co.uk
Where would you love to photograph ifyou could choose anywhere in theworld?Blimey. There’s so much choice. We live in such anextraordinary world... probably at the moment I’dchoose Iceland. I went about 15 years ago when Iwasn’t quite as up to speed with landscapephotography as I am now. There’s an epic, almostother-worldliness to Iceland that is extraordinary, and I’d like to experience that again at some point.
Do you have an all-time favouritephotograph/place you’ve photographed? I was born and brought up in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and used to spend a lot of time at the coast. There’s something about the Northumbriancoastline that is very special indeed... a mixture ofmassive windswept beaches, history, offshoreislands and bad weather. Perfect.
We’re looking forward to seeing you atthe Rochdale Literature and IdeasFestival – what can we expect you to talkabout?I’m looking forward to being there - I suspect I’llbe talking a fair bit about where my pictures comefrom, how and why I take the photographs that Ido, what drives them, what motivates them. And ofcourse a fair amount about my acting work, whichis at the root of much of my photography.
What would you love to be doing in ten years time?More of the same please and I’d be a very happybunny indeed...

Thousands of people packed into Rochdale
town centre recently for the annual Feel
Good Festival, enjoying a real feast of live
music, food and family entertainment.
Celebrity chefs Rachel Allen, Kevin
Woodford, Andrew Nutter, Aazam Ahmad
and James Holden created some magic in
the kitchen, with their live cookery
masterclasses on the food stage
sponsored by Hopwood Hall College
proving a big crowd puller.
A festival market and food village was also a
hit with residents and visitors from across
the region.
On the Saturday, the main stage sponsored
by The Flying Horse Hotel and hosted by
Key 103’s Alex James was opened in style
by local band The Hotspur Press. They
were followed by country/soul singer Amy-
Jo Clough, with her acoustic guitar.
New indie rock band Shakedown
Stockholm, gained a lot of new fans after
their performance and were followed by a
rousing set which really got festival goers
dancing from Ska music stars The Uplifters.
Kirsty Almeida and her band The
Troubadours brought some soul
sophistication to the evening, setting the
scene for festival favourites Toploader who
took to the stage at 8pm. They kept the
crowd of thousands dancing for over an
hour, with a selection of tracks including
their global hit ‘Dancing in the Moonlight.’
Headliners The South followed, playing
many of their top hits including ‘A Little
Time’, ‘Don't Marry Her’, ‘Rotterdam’,
‘Perfect 10’ and more.

DOM JOLYHERE COMES THE CLOWN
Comedian Dom Joly shot to fame with his anarchic hidden-camera show ‘Trigger Happy TV’ andhas since made television series for the BBC, Channel 5 and Sky 1 including This Is Dom Joly andDom Joly’s Happy Hour. His spoof autobiography, Look At Me, Look At Me was published in2004. In 2009 he wrote his first travel book, The Dark Tourist, in which he holidayed in some ofthe world’s most unlikely destinations such as Chernobyl and North Korea. His new book - HereComes the Clown: A Stumble Through Show Business is a brilliantly bizarre and hilarious memoirfrom this audacious star.

Dom will be heading to NumberOne Riverside for the RochdaleLiterature & Ideas Festival onSaturday 24th October, where he’llbe talking about his life and hisnew book.Rochdale Literature & IdeasFestival runs from Friday 23 toSunday 25 October, with a feast ofevents for all ages covering drama, comedy, literature, music, theatre, poetry, visual arts and children’sshows. For the full line-up and to booktickets visitrochdaleliteraturefestival.co.uk.Festival updates on Twitterconnect with @RochdaleLitFest. Style caught up with Dom ahead
of his visit to Rochdale, to
discuss pranks, giant phones
and hot air balloons…
Readers will probably know you best
from Trigger Happy TV; when did you
first think up the show?
It kind of happened organically - I wasmucking about filming little bits and piecesand then Channel 4 spotted us and we gotto make a one-off and then everythingsnowballed from there. There was certainlyno great masterplan - most of TV is luckand acting on it.
Did you expect the massive popularity
the show achieved?
Not in the slightest - I was just excited thatit was going to be on telly and thensuddenly it was Friday night betweenFriends and Frasier!
What was your all-time favourite prank
from the series?
Probably the snail - I got dressed up as ahuge snail and waited for traffic to stop ata zebra crossing before sliding very, veryslowly across the road. Only in Englandwould the traffic have stopped. In AmericaI’d have been savagely beaten byrednecks before being run over by anoversized pick-up truck.
Did a practical joke ever go wrong?
SO many times. I once had control of atannoy in a supermarket and we werepicking on customers by sending me as thesecurity guard to keep an eye on them. Anun came in and we couldn’t resist. Shewent mental, swearing, throwing stuff - stillnot sure if she was a real nun or astrippergram.
Which programmes make you laugh?
Fawlty Towers, Curb Your Enthusiasm,Seinfeld, Veep.
What can we expect from your new book
‘Here Comes the Clown: A Stumble
Through Show Business’?
You can expect a warts and all descriptionof my last 15 years and every embarrassingthing that has ever happened to me. "It’svery funny” - my mum says.
We’re really excited about the Trigger
Happy TV revival… Has filming begun for
this?
Can’t really talk about this… but yes…
Will the giant phone be making a
comeback?!
The only thing coming back is the phonebecause phones have changed so muchand there are a lot of new options...
We’re guessing you may have to be more
heavily disguised this time around? Do
you get recognised a lot?
It’s not too bad - I have great make-upartists so it’s not really a problem.
What other plans do you have at the
moment?
I’m starting my new book, in which I walkfrom London to Beirut.
We hear you have a hot air balloon?!
I do… what could possibly go wrong. Ihaven’t got my licence yet but watch outonce I do - it’s opened up a whole newarea for pranks.
What advice would you give to aspiring
comedians and writers?
Stick to your guns, if you find it funny, thenit is. Don’t crowd-please and keep awayfrom low-hanging fruit.
You’ve won an award for being the
‘funniest tweeter’… where can we tweet
you?
@domjoly but I do bite...

HELEN LEDERERHelen Lederer is a very familiar face in the field of comedy, writing and acting... and also
the person Dawn French calls ‘the funniest woman in England’. Helen is probably best
known for her role as dippy Catriona in Absolutely Fabulous. She started out as part of
a group of early 1980’s comedians: Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, the late Rik
Mayall and Ben Elton who made their names at London’s Comedy Store.

need goodcommunicatorsbecause they canpotentially make lifeslightly better. Somepeople arecomfortable notdoing that like mysister for example, she is happy notdoing that with herlife. She says wildhorses couldn’t makeher do what I do. Ifyou have a desire todo this kind of work, you will know prettysoon whether youare able to do it. I
used to give myself one more yearin the early days. I did stand up forfive years. It is not an area to stayaround in if it is not going to work.
How different is that connectionto that with a sit down audience, atan event such as the RochdaleLiterature and Ideas Festival? I have really fallen in love with
that format this year. It is like standup without the jokes. You areengaging with people who haveturned up because they areinterested in the writing process, which interests me - there is somuch in common already. There isso much positivity about peoplewho read who want to go togatherings where literary pursuitsare discussed. I have enjoyed everyone of the festivals I have done. It isa very new area for me, and I amreally loving it… I am reallylooking forward to Rochdale, that itis going to be pretty amazing; I likecoming up to the North.
This is our third festival so it isquite a new thing for Rochdaletoo…Well done for giving people that
opportunity, for getting the fundingand organising it. If it is there -people will grow from it. If it is not,
Helen will soon be heading toRochdale for this year’sLiterature and Ideas Festival, todiscuss her debut novel, LosingIt - shortlisted for the BollingerEveryman Wodehouse Prize forcomic fiction. She will bediscussing this latest piece ofwork in her own entertainingstyle at the festival on Friday 23October, 7.30pm at Number OneRiverside.
Steve Cooke and NormanWarwick, from All Across theArts caught up with Helen priorto her festival appearance…
Which Helen Lederer willpeople see at the Festival?I have made it up as I have gone
along. If it is of some interest tosome people, and I guess it is, thenthat’s a bonus. I have never beenone to completely fit in. I used toget into trouble at school. It is notthat I meant to be badly behaved – Ijust did things a bit differently.
When you put your work outthere what do you hope that it willachieve? We need role models, people
who can affect policy; we needfunny, witty people to do blogs; we
they won’t. In general terms therehas been a dip in reading but withlots of ways now to access books Ithink it is coming into its own. Also people are interested inwriting themselves. People whocome to events ask how do youstart, how many hours do you putin? I would ask these questions ofany author myself. I would haveloved to have asked AgathaChristie what she got up to. It isfascinating to explore people’sminds and how they put ideas ontothe page. So well done to everyonefor putting on this Festival andhopefully everyone who turns upwill get something from it.
How much of what you do as astand-up comic, actress andauthor is from your imaginationand how much based on yourobservations? For the novel, everything comes
from my own perception and whereI am at that time, although as weevolve we perceive thingsdifferently. What was alarming tome and terrifying aged 30 isprobably not now – other thingsare now. So it depends where youare at, but if you are doing a rolewith a script you absorb itdifferently. I think thinking aboutthings is not helpful to me - I justhope I can draw on something. What was it Laurence Olivier said?“Just turn up, remember your linesand don’t bump into the furniture”.Ab Fab the film is filming inOctober, it is like buses. October isthe hot month.

THE NIGHT THE BEATLESPLAYED MIDDLETON
The Beatles never played Rochdale during their touring years but they did appear at Middleton on ThursdayApril 11th 1963 at the Co-operative Hall in Long Street. This was the same day that their third single, ‘FromMe To You’, was released and just before the true phenomenon of Beatlemania exploded. It must have beenan unforgettable experience for the lucky three hundred or so young people who were there.
Middleton was a ‘one nighter’ in a
busy week that included their debut on
national BBC television. The gig was
sandwiched between an appearance in
Birkenhead and a Good Friday return to
Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club (where
the late Cilla Black had been a cloakroom
attendant). The Beatles’ sheer level of
work is exhausting just to read about;
these were the days before Britain had a
full motorway network or even luxury
coaches where the group could relax or
sleep. The Fab Four generally travelled in
a van with their road manager Neil
Aspinall. In April 1963 alone, The Beatles
made twenty concert appearances, along
with several radio and television shows;
rarely having even one day off per week.
The Middleton Guardian of Friday 19th
April 1963 had a full report entitled ‘Co-op
Hall crush for Beatles fans’. It seems that
the group performed for about an hour in
front of their fans who had each paid seven
shillings and sixpence (about 37p!). This
seems excellent value as later in their
career, The Beatles only performed on
package tours where they would have
played for twenty minutes or so.
Having learned their stage craft in
gruelling all-night shows in Hamburg in
Germany, The Beatles knew how to pace a
concert by mixing original material such as
‘Love Me Do’ and ‘Please Please Me’ with
cover versions of hits by Little Richard,
Chuck Berry and The Isley Brothers.
Amazingly, there was always room for a
couple of slow ballads to contrast with the
fast rock ‘n’ roll numbers.
As Beatlemania increased, the
audience’s screams at their concerts got
louder and louder. Eventually the group
became tired of not being heard and they
made no more live appearances after
1966. The Beatles continued as a studio-
based group and their recordings became
more and more sophisticated. They
disbanded in early 1970.
At Middleton, The Beatles would have
been in their live prime, with their audience
able to hear them clearly and their stage
act fully developed. At the end of the
concert the group signed autographs,
changed out of their stage clothes and
returned to their native Liverpool. No doubt
they travelled down the East Lancs Road
(the A580) as the M62 had yet to be built!
The Co-op Hall in Middleton was
demolished in August 1963, only a few
months after the Fab Four played there.
Now on Long Street as people walk past
Barclays Bank, Betfred and The Harbord
Harbord, I wonder how many of them
know that The Beatles once played here.
Were YOU there?…

THE NEW ICONICMAZDA MX-5
It’s easy to spot a quiet newsday in local newspapers as theyinevitably have a nostalgia pagewith a picture of the local highstreet. If it was taken in theseventies you can more or lessguarantee that the cars onshow will feature at least oneBritish sports car, be it an MGBor Triumph Spitfire. Over theyears, the economy sports carhas been killed off by the hothatch but one manufacturer haskept the spirit alive - Mazda.Over the years I have made nosecret of my love for the MazdaMX-5. IT is the very essence ofwhat a true sports car shouldbe - Simple, quick and fun.
But what you have in an MX-5 is thespirit of a traditional British roadstercombined with Japanese build qualityand reliability. These factors havecombined to win the hearts of over amillion buyers worldwide since the littleMazda was launched twenty years ago.
The latest fourth generation car hasjust gone on sale and greeting anupdated version of a favourite car is abit like when your partner goes to thehairdressers, you just hope and pray thatyou like the new style as you are goingto have to live with it. That said I was
pleasantly surprised when I first saw thepictures and even happier when itappeared in the flesh.
Mazda has gone straight back to itsroots with the new generation car beingthe shortest ever and utilising a 130bhp,1.5-litre engine to power the base
27
model. If you want a bit more oomph, you can also specify a 2.0-litre 158bhpunit which gets to 60mph in 7.3seconds, 1.2 seconds quicker than thesmaller unit.
That said, driving the MX-5 is notabout power but control. The MX-5really makes you feel ‘involved’ withwhat is going on. The feedback from
the steering gives you almost subliminalinformation about the road beingcovered while the twitches from the reartwo wheels under heavy accelerationcan be easily controlled way beforeanything becomes too sideways.
Mazda has always used thephilosophy Jinba Ittai when designingthe four generations of MX-5. Itsmeaning relates to the relationshipbetween a rider and the horse. Icouldn’t have put it better myself. Noother car feels in tune or as connected, even cars that retail at four times theprice. Only one car can better it, and
that’s the Aerial Atom and you wouldn’tuse that on a daily basis in February, inthe rain and cold.
Don’t fancy spending upwards of the£18,495 asking price of the base model? No problem. A few years ago I investedthe princely sum of £900 I have investedin a 1994 1.8i original as a toy for thesummer. After a light restoration itdrives just as well as when it came out ofthe showroom 21-years ago, costs £90 ayear to insure on a classic policy and isan absolutely invigorating out on theopen roads, especially at dawn on acrisp winter’s morning.
There are plenty of examples outthere at the minute at bargain prices butwatch out for the dreaded rust, especially along the sills and rear arches.Engines are pretty bullet proof anddon’t let Japanese imports put you off. They are generally better spec’d thanBritish cars but make sure they havebeen properly undersealed.

Rochdale Cinema TrailThe new shopping andleisure scheme forRochdale town centre onthe site of the old counciloffices and bus stationincludes plans for amultiplex cinema.Ironically, this will be verynear to The Regal Moonon the Butts, whose namerefers to the building’searlier role as the RegalCinema, later renamed theABC and, finally, Cannon.
During the last century Rochdale had many cinemas andthis trail is intended to help Style readers find thewhereabouts of some of them. We will start outside The
Regal Moon. This cinema was the last one to be built in the townin 1938 and the last one to be closed in 1992, having ‘escaped’becoming a bingo hall in 1975. Three years later, in 1978, this -the now ABC cinema - was ‘tripled’ with three screens beingprovided within the building. Sadly, the popularity of home video
and the new multiplex at Pilsworth caused attendances toplummet at Rochdale. The cinema did indeed briefly become RitzBingo, before its transformation into a Wetherspoons in 1997.Pevsner’s Buildings Of England notes the ‘extraordinarybalustrade, like an abacus’ on the front of the building. It is goodto see such a successful conversion of one of our town’s mostfamous buildings; not all of Rochdale’s former cinemas havebeen so lucky and survived, as we shall see.
ABC Cinema
29
Leave The Regal Moon behind you andhead for Town Hall Square. On your left onwhat is strictly Packer Street, just before theFlying Horse pub was the Empire (nowDarli’s Bar). Built in 1904, the Empire wasoriginally a music hall but soon became acinema known as Pringles Picture Palace. Itreopened as the Empire De Luxe Cinema in1930 with a new curved balcony whichreplaced the original horseshoe shapedone. There were 1,150 seats. In the 1950’s,this cinema was converted to a bingo hall, before becoming a bar in 1995. If you lookcarefully, you can see the name ‘EmpireHall’ carved into the masonry at the top ofthe central bay. Unfortunately, a tallsycamore tree obscures the left hand sideof the building, but the stonework andstained glass windows are still impressive. An unusual feature is a speakers’ balconyabove the entrance.
Walk past the Flying Horse and turn leftup Nelson Street, crossing Church Lane; gopast the World Buffet and turn right whenyou reach Drake Street; go pastChampness Hall and the next road on theright is Great George Street. On theimmediate right was the Palace PictureHouse which opened in 1911 with 1200seats. By 1930 this was known as thePalace Tudor Super Cinema. It closed at theend of August in 1968. The Palace becamethe Euro/Asian Film Club for the next 13years. The building was then a nightclubcalled Scene One, but was destroyed by firein 1987. The club was rebuilt as Xanadu’swhich was closed and demolished in 2002.Nearby was the much-loved CarltonBallroom, which has also now disappeared.
Continue along Drake Street and, at thejunction with Oldham Road and MilnrowRoad, was the Rialto cinema. The Rialtowas officially opened in 1929 by GracieFields. It was taken over by Gaumont in1957, finally becoming the Odeon two yearslater. This extraordinary building wasRochdale’s grandest picture house withmarble steps leading to a foyer with stainedglass windows and depicting scenes ofVenice’s Rialto Bridge and Grand Canal.Upstairs, a café lounge - with seating for160 customers - was lined with realmahogany panelling. Plush carpeted aislesled to a huge auditorium with over 1800seats. These cinemas were accuratelydescribed in the 1930’s as ‘dream palaces’taking audiences into a world far away fromtheir difficult and unglamorous lives duringthe Depression. Seeing Hollywood movieson the big silver screen must have been anunforgettable experience. The cinemaclosed in 1975 and lay empty for severalyears. There were plans by the RankOrganisation to turn it into a skateboardarena but these came to nothing.Eventually, this wonderful cinema wasdemolished and replaced by an MFI store. At present, the site – overlooking Wet Rake– is waste ground and enclosed by woodenfencing. In 2015 it is extremely hard toimagine a luxury cinema ever being there. The cinema must have given this part oftown a real focal point and a memorablemeeting place. Younger readers should askolder relatives if they are in any doubt!
A mile up Oldham Road gets us toKingsway; immediately on your left, atLower Place, was King’s Cinema. One of
the smaller Rochdale cinemas, with justover 800 seats, King’s was opened in 1922and converted for ‘talkies’ seven years later. It closed in 1969, briefly becoming an Asiansocial centre. In 1972, it was converted intoKing’s Bingo but the building has beenempty for many years and is currently up forsale. Unfortunately, this former cinema isunremarkable on the outside and has beencompletely gutted inside. If only theRialto/Odeon had been spared instead! Now we return to the town centre.
It will be wonderful for Rochdale towncentre to have a cinema again after anabsence of about a quarter of a century. This writer remembers going to see ‘E.T’. atthe ABC cinema in 1983 and wonderingwhy he could hear so many sniffles duringthe screening. No, Rochdale was notsuffering from a common cold epidemic, itwas grown women (and men!) crying whilewatching the Steven Spielberg classic! Thatis the extraordinary power of communal filmwatching; forget DVDs and Netflix!
The new cinema will be convenient forthe Transport Interchange and I am surethat it will be popular with families. A cinemain a town centre acts as a magnet andspringboard for other facilities – such asshops, restaurants and bars - will benefit, too. There will also be a welcome andpositive addition to this Rochdale cinematrail!

PATTERNED SILK SCARVES are eminentlyversatile because they can be used as acasual beach sarong or knotted and wornas a head wrap in summer, and can beartfully draped or tied jauntily around theneck in autumn to add interest to a simplejeans and tee combo.
FLOPPY HATS show no signs of diminishing in popularity,no doubt because of their ultra-wearableflexibility – they were great for those(occasional) sunny summer days but willalso provide a little protection from theinevitable autumn showers as thetemperature drops. Colours like camel, charcoal and burgundy are quite neutraland will complement much of your existingwardrobe while adding a splash of grown-up colour, or you could always opt for aclassic and timeless black. The humblefloppy hat fulfils the dual purpose of addinga touch of 70s sophistication to your outfitwhile disguising the fact that you haven’tdone your hair that day – result.
BOOTIES, OR THEUNASSUMING ANKLE BOOTare another piece you probablyhave several of in yourwardrobe. Black, tan, brown, grey; all can be worn withdenim cut offs or tailored shortsin summer, which you can thensimply swap for skinny jeans asautumn rolls in.
FALL into Fashion...So, summer is over (did it ever really begin?!) whichmeans it’s time to start shopping for your autumnwardrobe! And because it’s not too chilly yet it’d bequite nice to be able to get a bit more wear out of someof our summer clothes before we’ve to start de-icing thecar. Planning ahead is a great way to make sure thatwhen you do go on your shopping spree your newpurchases actually work together and will slot in withyour existing wardrobe seamlessly. It also means thatyou don't end up with far too many unnecessary ormismatched pieces and that dreaded guilty feeling inthe pit of your stomach. Here are some key pieces that are available all over thehigh street, some of which you may already have in yourwardrobe – either way they will make the transition fromsummer to autumn wardrobe pretty much effortless...
LEATHER, LEATHER, LEATHER. It’s a classic for a reason.Leather shorts look fabulous andjust a little edgy worn with awhite tee and strappy leathersandals in summer, and equallygood with a simple denim shirtand boots as the days getshorter. And the leather jacket -the more beat up the better inmy opinion - is the ultimatestaple which functions yearround as a cover-up and whichbequeaths a little je ne sais quoito pretty much any outfit.
CHUNKY JEWELLERYPIECES, featuring semi-preciousstones such as opals, moonstones or turquoise, give an injection ofunconventional luxury toyour look, adding a pop ofcolour while still beingaffordable and unique. Agreat way to create adistinctive look is to layerjewellery that has similarelements, such as achunky topaz necklace witha simple chain pendant, lending a little chutzpah toan otherwise simpleensemble.
IN THE SHOE DEPARTMENT, pointy toed pumps or loafers willcomplement pretty much any outfit combination, from summery floraldresses to autumnal tailored trousers at the office, without sacrificingcomfort for style. Purchase in different fabrics and textures, such asvelvet or patent, to lend a little opulence to your feet. For evening, laceup heels have been floating around for quite a while now, and the laceup heeled boot is a great multi-purpose heel that avoids falling into thetrap of ‘boring’ because it is so easily paired with an evening dress oreven a pair of jeans.
THE BLAZER is an autumn hero piece which can beworn over summer dresses to take you into theseason, upgrading your look from boho beach girl torelaxed office chic, and can be worn year after year.
Don’t forget your make up bag either, which can be an inexpensiveroute to updating your overall style, and a pretty easy way to mark theshift from summer to autumn. Introduce deeper hues to your morning(and evening) beauty routine, and opt for rich and refined matte-finishwines and plums for lips which brighten your complexion andharmonise with soft greys, cobalts and forest greens for nails.
Golds, chocolate browns and charcoals for eyes are great for adding alittle more drama to your look and look great as the nights start to drawin, bestowing warmth and texture which compensates for the fade ofthat summer glow.
Go forth and shop, my pretties.Rachel Clarke

ULTIMATE LASHES - Luscious lashes areon trend this autumn. The more natural thebetter. There are several methods ofenhancing the lashes such as LVL LASHES,which is a great natural treatment for lashes, where the lashes are permed vertically andcompletely lifted, then tinted in rich black foroptimal results and definition. This treatmenttakes 45 minutes and the results can last upto 6 weeks.
If you would prefer a little extra volumeand length then I would recommend a semi-permanent lash. I would recommend the la lalash, which is an individual lash attached toyour natural lashes to achieve volume andlength. La la lashes last up to 2 weeks.
If lash enhancements aren’t for you andyou are a natural beauty then a really supervolumising mascara can create lift andvolume.
GLOWING TAN - As we head into thecooler autumn months it is still nice to keep
the glow of summer on our skin. Whetheryou have been on a summer holiday andhave a deep tan or have picked up a sunkissed glow from gardening or festivals, it’sgreat to maintain that colour as we headtowards the coming season. To maintainyour tan you need to keep the skinmoisturised to prevent flaking and peeling. Iwould recommend a tan booster moisturiserwith a hint of colour to keep your skinhydrated and nourished.
REJUVENATED SKIN - Perfect collageninduced skin can now be achieved throughmicro needling and there’s no better seasonto try it. Cooler weather and less sunexposure is a great time to try the Dermapen;a micro needling treatment that rejuvenatesthe skin, eradicates lines and wrinkles, anddisperses melanin and pigmentation leavinga clearer complexion. It also calms rosaceaand smooths the contours of scarringincluding acne scarring.
PERFECT NAILS - The trend this seasonis rich deep colours on the nails in a highgloss shine. The best way to achieve thislook is with a gel polish; I would recommendGelish for high gloss shine and long lastingpolish that doesn’t chip or smudge for 2weeks. Leading the trend this autumn is theUrban Cowgirl collection by Gelish. Thiscollection of on-trend colours will see youthrough the season, with a colour to matchevery outfit, from rich molton chocolates todeep purples, pretty nudes and even adusky pink with hues which complement theautumn wardrobe. This collection will leaveyou saying ‘Yee-har’ as you leave the salonwith the perfect nails this season.

REVEALING THE RIVER ROCH
ABOUT… The project to uncover the River Roch and reveal its historic bridge will boost Rochdale’sheritage, as well as improving the biodiveristy of the river and reducing flood risk in the town centre.
There are also plenty of opportunities for our residents and visitors to get involved in this unique project. We’re running a whole host of activities, from ecology sessions for the kids to knitting workshops.People can also enjoy spooky River Roch-themed ghost walks, led by local actor Colin Meredith. There’s something for everyone, and best of all, most activities are free.

WENDY’S FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS
Managing Director and animal lover, WendyOwen, recently visited the country and washeartbroken to see the terrible conditions the dogsare subject to. Wendy commented: “The dogs aretreated as vermin and live on the streets inhorrific conditions; a lot of them become ill. Foryears, despite efforts from voluntaryorganisations to spay and neuter, the amount ofstray dogs on the streets of Romania hasescalated. There are public shelters, which are in
essence death camps for the dogs who aresubjected to the most inhumane treatment.”
Thankfully, there are also private shelterswho rely on donations from the public andcharities. With their help, many dogs are rescuedfrom the public shelters and streets, neutered, vaccinated and receive veterinary treatment. These lucky few are then offered for adoptionworldwide.
Wendy commented:“On my recent visit Ifound a dog (Harry) bythe side of the road thathad been run over. He isnow recovering andliving with me, Bobbie -another Romanianrescue, and Pippa - anEnglish rescue dog.”
“These dogs make excellent pets – it's as ifthey know how lucky they are – and that they
have had a lucky escape – and they are verygrateful”, added Wendy.
Bowser Supply Ltd have been collectingmuch-needed items for the dogs, such as beds, blankets, food, toys, worming tablets, flea sprays, grooming kits and coats. All donations aregratefully accepted. Donations can be droppedoff at Bowser Supply Ltd, Unit 8, ShawcloughTrading Estate, Shawclough Road, Rochdale,OL12 6ND or free collection can be arranged.Monetary donations can also be sent via Paypal. Please contact Wendy on 01706 655132 or byemail [email protected].
If you are interested in provided a lovinghome for a Romanian dog please contact Wendyfor more information on the process. (Pleasenote there is an adoption fee, but all dogs comewith a legal passport and are fully vaccinated, wormed etc).
Rochdale-based company, Bowser Supply Ltd, is on a mission to change the lives of thousands of Romanian stray dogs. Over the past few years the company, based in Shawclough, has funded many wagons full of aid to be sent over to various animal shelters in Romania.

The subway has been furnished with newsigns, railings, LED lighting, CCTV,concrete flooring and a new drainagesystem. Many of the heritage features fromthe original subway have been kept andrestored including the ironwork, bridgedecks, heritage railings and the tiling insidethe tunnel. Historic photographs of how the
station used to look are featured on the wallsand railings.
Reopening of the underpass from MiallStreet has already had many benefits fortravellers and residents. It provides a directroute to both the railway station and theMetrolink station from the new park andride facility on Hare Street. This well-lit,
free car park has spaces for200 cars, as well as 13spaces reserved for disabledvehicles and four spaces forelectric vehicles to chargetheir batteries. There is alsoample space for motorcycleparking. Even after a fewweeks, it is clear that thereopening of the subway hasincreased the use of this carpark by commuters andencouraged greater use ofpublic transport. In the past, users of this carpark had along walk to the station via
either Richard Street or Milkstone Road. The work has been funded by Transport
for Greater Manchester, Network Rail andRochdale Borough Council. This importantdevelopment is part of a bigger scheme toimprove services at the station through thegovernment’s £600 million Northern Hubwhich will increase capacity on the railnetwork. This scheme will see Rochdalebenefit from a range of improvementsincluding enabling a possible boost to thenumber of fast trains travelling fromRochdale to Manchester.
Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair ofTransport for Greater Manchester said, “ Byimproving passenger access to the car park, train platforms and Metrolink stop andcutting the walking distance by up to 300metres, the project enables public transportusers to get around more quickly and easilyin a much more safe and secureenvironment.”
Richard Lysons
The Miall Street underpass entrance to Rochdale railway station was officially opened on 10th July. Thesouthern entrance to the station had been closed in 1979 and had fallen into disrepair. The reopening of thesubway will enable Rochdale Council to develop their Station Gateway Master Plan which has been designedto transform the surrounding area.

RsPCa RoCHDaLe NeWsthe Rochdale animal Centre, rightin the heart of Rochdale, rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes hundredsof animals every year. Most of theanimals are brought to the centre byRsPCa inspectors having beenrescued from cruel treatment, abandonment and other distressingsituations.
There are some lovely cats, kittens andrabbits and other small pets in theanimal centre on Redcross Streetwaiting for loving new homes.
One new resident is Pootle who wasbrought in after being hit by a car andbreaking her pelvis. She has been oncage rest and pain relief for 5 weeksand is doing well. Once again this catwas not chipped so we have not beenable to trace her owners and no one hasreported her missing. We microchip atthe centre for just £12 per pet - thisincludes dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets.
In order to provide these services we have to fundraise throughout the year. Wereceive no government funding and rely on local support. If you want to visit thecentre to see the valuable work done by our wonderful staff and volunteers it is opento the public six days a week 11.30am until 3.30pm, only closing on Wednesdays.

The festivities began with a procession fromNorth Street up to the Riverside, featuringmorris dance troupes, the Whitworth Valeand Healey Bands, the Mayor of Whitworth, the Thwaites Shire Horses and dray (cart)and of course the Rushcart itself, resplendent in purple heather collected fromlocal hills in the weeks before the event bythe Whitworth Rushcart Men and pulled bythe men themselves.
Following the procession, celebrations werecentred on the Riverside itself. Inside was anarts and crafts fair, featuring local artisansand displays from the local HistoricalSociety. On the car park there were rides and
inflatables, arts and craft stalls, refreshmentsand performances from the various morrisdance troupes.
The event is organised by the town’s Tourismand Leisure Committee; CommitteeChairman Councillor David Chorlton said:“This year’s Rushcart went brilliantly well, and the response that we’ve had from thestallholders, dancers and the general publichas been very positive. On behalf of theCommittee I would like to thank our localPolice, marshals, stallholders, dancetroupes, and the staff at the Riverside whoworked tirelessly, and Clive Morton, whoseinput is invaluable.”
WHITWORTH RUSHCART ANOTHER OUTSTANDINGSUCCESSThe annual Whitworth Rushcart event was held on Sunday 6 September in glorious late summerweather and attracted crowds of around 1,500 people over the course of the afternoon.

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE rochdale News & events
SPRINGHILL HOSPICE, BROAD LANE, ROCHDALE, OL16 4PZ.For further details about any of the above, please contact the fundraising department on 01706 641790 or by e-mail [email protected]
Once again the amazing people of Rochdale, Middleton and Heywoodhave come out in force, supporting the Hospice and ensuring theservices they offer carry on being available free of charge to their owncommunities.
This year’s Hospice to Hospice Walk had a record turn out with 300walkers, some accompanied by their four legged friends, walking to Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Oldham, before returning back to Springhill torest their tired legs. The sun shone all day, making the 7.25 mile routeeven more enjoyable. Record numbers produced record fundraisingwith sponsorship hitting an astonishing £11.5k. “We’ve already gotrequests for places on next year’s walk on Sunday 24th April”, saidorganiser Lillie Winterbottom, adding “To break more records wouldbe beyond our wildest dreams but with support for this event growingeach year, we’re hopeful”.
2015 also saw Rochdale ‘go greener’ for the Hospice. Go Green 2015was a successful as last year’s inaugural fundraising day with many moreindividuals, companies, colleges, schools, pubs and clubs turning out inevery shade of green imaginable, with the fundraising total currently at£9.5k and still rising. It was great fun for all the community and proves that
if everyone does something small,it amounts to fantastic fundraising!Same time next year with GoGreen 16 set for Friday 13th May.
A new one for the Hospicethis July was Springy’s MoonlitSprint or Stroll. Supportersdressed in bespoke Springy-style onesies and walked a10km circular route, startingand finishing at Rochdale’sRugby Union Club in Bamford. The evening went‘hoppingly’, beginning with aZumba warm up from BeckySmithies and even celebrity chef, Andrew Nutter got intothe spirit by driving around, dropping off gourmet snacks to anyonedressed in a frog suit. “We had just over 100 frogs springing around theroute, between them raising a phenomenal £8.5k. The feedback wereceived from the night was brilliant” said Lillie Winterbottom. Thehospice are hoping this year’s event will spawn something even bigger andbetter next year…
A week of dark clouds and rain didn’t bode well but, as with last year, the sun put his hat on for Springhill Hospice’s Summer Serenade on 25thJuly. GMP Male Voice Choir, Heywood’s The Voice, The Rochdale WindBand and soloist Shelley Byrne were introduced to a full audience in thegrounds of the Hospice by compere Ian Jenkins. Another special night offundraising at Springhill.
The sun didn’t just come out in style for the summer serenade, itscheduled a visit for the Hospice’s Open Garden Day on 9th August. Nickthe gardener, helped ably by his apprentice Harry and an army ofvolunteers, weeded, deadheaded, mowed, pruned and plantedthroughout the award winning Hospice grounds, in preparation for thehundreds who turned out for a tour. A flower arranging demonstration, hanging basket lesson and garden produce sale only added to a fabulousday that raised nearly £1400.

COMMUNITY NEWSNEW LEASE OF LIFEFOR MARTIN’S 188YEAR OLD TREE
Rochdalian Martin Wolfenden was saddened to arriveat the realisation that his beloved 188-year-old beech tree, which once stood proudly over his Springhill garden, mayhave to be uprooted, after its partial collapse. He then hadthe idea of incorporating his love of local wildlife into thetree and sought the skill of professional chainsaw sculptor,Mick Burns, to transform his meaningful mass of wood intoan intricate work of art.
The bulk of the tree now comprises of three largetoadstools which provide a red squirrel and a robin with aplace to perch, whilst on the face of the tree lies a comicalallusion ‘RIP Mr Beech 1826-2014’. Mick also created ahedgehog and fox from excess wood which adds evenmore unique charm and character.
