Amma had just begun tomake some halwa forSamirarsquos birthday whenshe found that there wasno sooji ldquoWill you please rundown to that shop andbuy some sooji dearrdquosaid Amma pointing tothe shop at the corner ofthe street and gave hersome money

ldquoHere are twelve rupees Ask for half akilo of sooji Take Mouchak with youand donrsquot talk to any strangers on thewayrdquo she saidldquoAnd donrsquot go climbing treesrdquo sheadded as Samira set out with Mouchakto buy half a kilo of sooji It was a pleasant February day Samirasang ldquoTra la la la lardquo as she skippedalong ldquoWoof Woofrdquo said Mouchak friskily

They had just reached the corner when Samira saw a butterflyldquoOh How lovely Let us try and catch itrdquo she said and both of them ran after thebutterfly

It went and sat on a baramasi flower but away it flew exactly when Samira reachedout to it ldquoOh oh rdquo she said sadly then remembered that it wasnrsquot right to catchbutterflies anyway They should be free

A brown cat with grey stripes ran across and Mouchak began to chase it sayingldquoBow wow bow wow wow rdquo And behind Mouchak ran Samira breathless Thebrown-and-grey cat leapt over a wall and disappeared Mouchak and Samirastopped looked at each other and laughed

Then Samira saw achandni bush lsquoArenrsquot theflowers like stars in thenight sky How happyAmma will be to havethemrsquo she thought andplucked a lot of chandniflowers

Mouchak sniffed at themand turned away He hadfound something moreexciting ahead ldquoHey where are you offtordquo asked Samira but allshe got was ldquoWoofwoof woofrdquo as Mouchakbounded off joyfully Hehad found a bone and heheld it out proudly toSamira Wasnrsquot that nice

They had reached a greatsimal tree a-twitter withparrots and bulbuls Theground below wascarpeted with hundredsof rich scarlet flowersDelighted Samira filledher pinafore with thewaxy blossoms Her armsfull of flowers she lookedup and realized that shedidnt know where shewas

She looked right and shelooked left she lookedahead and she turned onher heel but everythingwas new Samira waslost She sat down on thepavement and began tocry ldquoI want to go home Iwant Ammardquo Mouchak ran up anddown and said ldquoWoofWoofrdquo which meantldquoDonrsquot worryrdquo butSamira didnrsquot understandand kept crying

Then Mouchak pulled at her dress saying ldquoBow bowrdquo (which meant ldquoComecomerdquo) till at last she looked up and dabbed her eyes Off they both went thenSamira sniffing a little and dropping half her flowers

She ran behind Mouchak turning left and turning right up one street and downanother and soon they were home Amma was standing at the gate looking upand down anxiously ldquoWhere have you beenrdquo she asked looking at Samirarsquos tear-stained face

And Samira told Amma how she had got lost and how Mouchak had brought herhome ldquoGood dogrdquo said Amma and gave him a nice big biscuit as Mouchak buriedhis bone in the garden

Just then Samira remembered that shewas clutching a bunch of flowers in herhand ldquoOh Amma these are for yourdquoshe held out the chandni flowers Onesimal blossom was sticking out of herpocket too ldquoThese are lovely rdquo said Amma ldquoThankyou so much But where is the soojirdquo Amma is going to make kheer now asthere is no sooji for the halwa Samiraloves kheer too And isnrsquot Mouchaklucky Hersquoll have a huge bowl of kheerin the evening with his juicy bone
