Originally founded in 1803 as the Demidov Lyceum with 11 students, the institution was enlarged to a "Juridical Lyceum" about a century later. Soon after this enlargement, by order of Vladimir Lenin, it was enlarged again to Yaroslavl State University (YSU) on August 7, 1918. The reorganization was very difficult as it was the period of the Russian Civil War. During the first two years 29 departments were opened including medical, agronomic, pedagogical and law faculties as well as an evening school for working men and women.
