Herman has a wonderful sense of humor, and has been performing for large, sold outgroups all over the country. He is pleased tospeak to the members of MCC about his book, life, travels and promises to bring some laughter– which we all can use, and maybe even a tear. His book will be available for sale that night, butif nothing else, just come down for a lovely nightof discussion and enjoyment with othermembers.

Dear Homeowner:
Many of you have been asking questions “How to reduce your ground rent,”“How do you get the Board of Equalization to eliminate possessory interest taxand relieve the homeowners of double taxation,” and “When can we negotiatewith the County of Los Angeles to extend the lease for an additional 20 yearshere at the Marina City Club?” These issues are important to you. That is why Iarranged for the LA County Tax Assessor John Noguez and or his representativeand Steve Napolitano of Supervisor Knabe’s office to attend the HOA meeting ofMay 24, 2011.
These questions have been lingering in the minds of homeowners for years. Most recently I have been bombarded everywhere I go on the premises:restaurant, gym, by the homeowners wanting to know when the questions wouldbe answered and when the problems would be solved. Mark McNeil – DivisionChief Major Real Property Division, Paul Olvera – Principal Advisor, and DanHanna – Local Appraiser, confirmed that they would attend the May 24thmeeting. It was important that we have a large turnout so that these officialscould hear the questions raised directly from the homeowners.
In order to get a large turnout we posted notices in the elevators and byeach unit door, hoping to get an overflow crowd. I’m ashamed to say, we hadless than 40 people in attendance. It’s almost as if they didn’t really care. Therepresentatives from the County Tax Office and Supervisor’s Office indicated tome that they were also disappointed with the turnout. They were expecting tospeak to more homeowners about these very important issues. Government willwork for you but you must work with Government to facilitate the process. At theend of the meeting, as I walked to the restaurant, four or five homeownersconverged on me asking questions like, “What about my ground rent,” “Whatabout my taxes?” Then they were saying to me “I was having dinner so Icouldn’t attend the meeting.” My response was “If you were truly interested inhearing the answers from the horse’s mouth you would’ve been in attendance.”Personally, I believe we can have the government solve our problems but it’sgoing to be a team effort and we must work together to accomplish our goalsand objectives. As they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
When the time comes to address our concerns directly to the Board ofSupervisors you must be prepared to attend the meetings. You cannot be heardfrom your living rooms. It’s always nice to have someone on the frontline workingand fighting for you; however, there are times you must join in that fight tobenefit your cause.
Good News Now for the good news! “Yelp” reviews on the Marina City Club have us as
five star and more impressive than the Ritz Carlton who received four stars.Comments include: ‘A friend of mine said if I’m going to be in LA I better be [atMCC which is] near the water.’ “This place has a restaurant on the premises!!! Ican order room service or lounge at one of three pools---I especially love the baron the property-great place to come home to, have a drink and then goupstairs to sleep. Can’t recommend highly enough!!!!!” and seven people foundthis review useful. Others commented “I highly recommend checking this placeout….” and “Great service and food!”. These reviews should be anencouragement for you to bring your friends here for dinner and ask them tobecome outsider members to enjoy our beautiful facilities.

Championships this past weekend (May 14-15, 2011). Thetournament had six teams of men ranging in age from 18-85 years oldand all levels from 2.5-4.5! An amazing cross-section of our club turnedout. There were two divisions: The Championship and The Gold. Thefinals were held at noon on Sunday May 15th on courts 1 and 2.
The Gold Division was won by Lamont Cosby and Allan Bledstein overJohn Marshall and Richard Barry, 6-3, 6-0. Congrats to Lamont andAllan for a well-played final on court #2.
The Championship Division featured a finalbetween Stephen Hall and Steve Cezus versusMike Levitt and Alan Koshkin. The match wasextremely competitive with a “crowd” of 20on-lookers, Cezus and Hall captured the firstset in convincing fashion6-2, with over-poweringgroundies and bigserving. However, as thesecond set began, itbecame evident thatKoshkin and Levitt were
crowd favorites asunderdogs. Koshkin and
Levitt kept sneaking out games with smart, steady, aggressive play and took a commanding 5-2 leadbefore closing out the set 6-4. The final set was awar, with games going back and forth on serveuntil 4-4. Hall served and at 30-all, hit big shots tostay on serve 5-4. It was now Koshkin’s turn tohandle the pressure. At 30-30, Koshkin hit a solidsecond serve, but Steve Cezus hit an aggressivereturn to put his team in a winning position. On their first match point,Hall and Cezus made it count, closing out the final set, 6-4 and winningthe 2011 Marina City Club Doubles title. Congrats to all participants. The tournament featured a players’ raffle with Steve Cezus’ namecoming out of the hat to win a 6-racquet Nike bag.

A t the young age of 85,he is an inspiration to us
all! This year on MemorialDay, Howard signed up asone of the contestants in theMuscle Beach InternationalClassic Bodybuildingcompetition held in Venice.Howard is not new to thiscompetition as seven yearsago he set the bar to showwhat was possible well intohis 70’s. However, this yearwas extra special since hehad to overcome severalhealth issues, during the past three years, to get him to apoint where he could be a competitor again.
Howard is now well on the road to recovery and hethanks his personal trainer and nutritionist, Tyrone Perkins forhis success. Tyrone has put Howard on a three day a weekexercise program and has created a personalized menu forhim as well, to insure healthy eating and to promotestrength. At 85, Howard remains very diligent aboutfollowing the new regimen and has made remarkableprogress in becoming a healthier, more fit, stronger andfitness educated individual.
Howard is an inspiration not only to his generation, butalso to those 20 years his junior. He is a WWII Veteran, havingserved in the U.S. Navy with Rank QM 3/c in the SouthPacific Theatre. Howard’s reinvention and what he hasaccomplished because of his age should truly be anincentive for everyone to take the next step toward theirown healthy, active lifestyle. In Howard’s own words, “Life iswhat you make it.”
