• Autism is a developmental disorder that affects a child’s communication’s skills and social development. • Symptoms typically manifest somewhere between birth and three years of age.

• A range of symptoms affects each child with autism differently, leading it to be called a “spectrum disorder.” • Severity of symptoms ranges on a spectrum from mild to severe. • Less severe forms of autism may include Asperger’s syndrome. • If these disorders receive an early diagnosis, treatment may be more successful.

Symptoms of Autism include:• Difficulty communicating via speaking or body language.• Repetition in mannerisms including hand-flapping, object twirling, etc.• Little or no eye contact with others.• Trouble forming lasting personal relationships.• Lack of spontaneous play, overly focused on a certain object or subject.

What you can do to help:• The official symbol of National Autism Awareness Month is the rainbow-colored Puzzle Ribbon.  • You can wear this ribbon on your clothes, car or even purse or hat to show your support.

Talk to your legislators:• Local and federal legislators can help further the cause, too.• You can write a simple and straightforward letter to your state representative telling them to “vote 4 Autism” and further legislation like the Combating Autism Act. • “Vote 4 Autism” is a group dedicated to just that – making a change through legislation. • Be sure to check with your local Autism Society chapter to stay abreast of the latest events and information.
