African tyre buyers will have the widest choice of brands and fitments ever assembled at a single trade exhibition, when Tyrexpo Africa 2014 opens its doors for business in Johannesburg next March.

The global pulling-power of the three-day event is reinforced by the presence of dozens of international tyre manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors with specialist products for all market sectors, including PCR, TBR, OTR, Agricultural and Industrial.

“The range and choice of tyres available to buyers at the show will be unparalleled at a single event in South Africa,” confirms Paul Farrant, managing director of Tyrexpo Africa organiser, ECI International. “Local dealers and fleet owners looking to add new brands to their portfolios will have the widest selection of well-respected manufacturers from South Africa and across the world.”

One of those suppliers will be German wholesaler BaRo GmbH, who will be making a first appearance at the show, looking to extend its reach in Africa. BaRo is particularly strong in the TBR sector, distributing the TyRex, Antyre, Cordiant, Fullrun, Falken and Kama brands for commercial users. In the agricultural sector it supplies Belshina, BKT, Mitas, Rosava and TyRex products.

Another European wholesaler, HBI Tyres & Wheels of The Netherlands, produces retreads under the private brand BANDENMARKT® for agricultural

machinery, excavators, dump trucks, port handling equipment, earthmoving and mining machinery.

HBI is also the international wholesaler of the DELCORA® (private brand), EuroGrip, Tianli, Petlas and Linglong ranges of new tyres for agricultural and heavy duty OTR applications, as well as being the global wholesaler of three makes of OTR, radial tractor and farm trailer tyres.

India’s Alliance Tire Group (ATG), which has a regional office and R&D centre in South Africa, is a leading player in the global Off-Highway Tires business with its Alliance, Galaxy and Primex brands. The group has ambitious plans to exceed a global turnover of $1 billion by 2017, with a vision of being one of the top 3 market leaders in the Agriculture, Forestry, Construction (AFC) segment, while building a strong presence in niche OTR markets such as port and mining.

For buyers of industrial and materials handling tyres, Trident International has developed a range of Solid Tyres designed for Skid Steer Loaders, Aerial Work Platforms, Wheel Loaders and Container Handlers. This equipment is usually fitted with pneumatic tyres, which can be prone to punctures and associated downtime, which is eradicated with a solid fitment. Trident says that solids have a lifespan three to five times longer than conventional pneumatic tyres and are particularly targeted at demanding applications such as construction, scrap and recycling yards, steel mills, solid waste management, ports and mines.

The new model from the German luxury car maker has a starting price of Rs 1.26 crore and is the 8th product to be launched by Mercedes in India this year

German luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz launched its new model, SLK 55 AMG, priced at Rs 1.26 crore (ex-showroom) as part of its product offensive in India.

The two-seater car comes with 5.5 litre V8 petrol engine and is the 8th product launched by the company this year in India.

“With the SLK 55 AMG, we unleash our AMG product (range) offensive for the Indian market as we plan to introduce remaining products from our global portfolio for the Indian customers,” Mercedes Benz India Managing Director and CEO Eberhard Kern told reporters

During this year, the company has introduced new products, including the compact luxury car A Class, B Class diesel and GL Class. Kern had earlier said that the company is focusing on sustainable profitable growth in India.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) launched the new version of its luxury sports utility vehicle Land Cruiser Prado in India priced at Rs 84.87 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi).

Apart from new exterior looks, the new Prado will have features such as ‘crawl control’ - a system that makes accelerator and brake operations unnecessary when driving over jagged off-road terrain or on slippery surfaces, enabling the driver to concentrate fully on steering.

It will also have multi-terrain select, a system that allows driver to choose between various road condition modes such as rock, rock and dirt, loose rock, and mud and sand.

The company said bookings for the new Prado will start immediately.

Commenting on the launch, TKM Deputy Managing Director & COO Sandeep Singh said ever since Prado’s launch in India in 2004, customer response has been very good and the company was confident of taking it forward.

Two-wheeler runs short of expectations, but company says it is stepping up efforts to increase sales

Italian two-wheeler maker Piaggio & C. SpA’s results for the first three quarters of this calendar year had a brief, but significant, reference to its iconic scooter in India. “Vespa run rate falls short of our expectations; we are stepping up efforts to increase sales,” the company said in its November presentation.

Ravi Chopra, Chairman and Managing Director of Piaggio’s Indian operations, would rather look at the bigger picture. “We are moving in the right direction and sales will step up. It is important to be patient,” he told Business Line over the phone from Pune.

Chopra reiterated that for a premium scooter like the Vespa, volumes are not top priority. “On the other hand, we are creating a segment which we can own. The brand is getting accepted and people are talking about it.” Clearly, the Vespa is not in the same mass product category as the Activa, Pleasure, Jupiter or Ray. With a higher price tag, its sales would be confined to a specific category of buyers keen on showing off this scooter. As a result, the numbers will be slow in coming which is precisely what Piaggio had anticipated. Earlier this year, the company had slashed Vespa prices by nearly Rs 6,000, which meant the ex-showroom price would begin at around Rs 60,000. According to Piaggio, this was a result of better “operational productivity in the plant and efficiency through systems”. Chopra had then said this price slash would not impact the Vespa’s premium positioning in the market.

The 125cc scooter was launched

in April 2012, followed by the high-end VX version in July this year. Sales of the Vespa duo are reportedly averaging 5,000 units a month. The capacity at the Baramati plant near Pune is 1.5 lakh units a year and it was widely believed that it would be doubled by the end of this year. But then, market conditions have been difficult for automakers for a while now. It is this depressed sentiment, coupled with the Vespa’s higher price tag, that puts the sales numbers in perspective. Yet Chopra is not deterred. “People are noticing its distinctiveness and positioning strategy,” he said. Piaggio is also keen on spreading the network to other parts of India in course of time.

For the moment, men take up over two-thirds of the buyer base for the Vespa, but this could change.

Women prefer options like the TVS Scooty and the Hero Pleasure as well as the Honda Activa and the Yamaha Ray, which meet their style quotient as well as budgets. The Vespa is still in a premium league and its owners want to be associated with a scooter that is distinctly European and more upmarket.

For Vespa, mantra is slow and steady

Even before its India launch, Piaggio was clear about the positioning of the Vespa as a ‘lifestyle, iconic, timeless and ageless product’. The idea was to sustain the brand image through an appropriate positioning and communication strategy focusing on its heritage and unique values.

In an earlier interview to Business Line , Chopra had said: “Ours is not a scooter; it’s a Vespa and a way of life. The idea is to awaken a sleeping potential consumer who does not have such a product.”

The Datsun Go is all set to be priced under Rs 4 laksh, with the roadshows giving future customers the chance to experience the car first hand before purchasing it

Nissan Motor India said that it will showcase the Datsun small car ‘Go’ in more than 90 cities in India soon.

To start with, it is showcasing the car in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai, and will reach other cities and towns by March-end, before the car is launched in April.

To be priced below Rs 4 lakh, the company said it wants the customers in India to first touch and feel the car before it is officially launched.

“Apart from metros and tier-I cities in India, we want to reach out to customers in the rural and tier-III and IV cities, including the northeast parts of the country, where the market is growing a lot,’’ Ajay Raghuvanshi, Vice President-Business Management, Nissan Motor India, told reporters here.

The roadshows will give an opportunity for customers to experience the features of the car developed specially for India, he said.
