“The most recognizedand sought-after technolo-gy features tend to be thosewhich promote style oversubstance, when in reality,it’s the less glamorous fea-tures like electronic stabili-ty control which make forsafer vehicles,” says BillMoore, president ofMetLife Auto & Home. “Byincreasing their under-standing of the availablesafety features in today’svehicles, consumers canmake more informed choic-es about which cars providethe best safeguards to helpprotect themselves andtheir families on the road.”

When asked about theirfamiliarity with safety-ori-ented automobile features -

some of which have beenavailable for several years -survey respondents gavelow marks:

• Less than half ofrespondents were very orsomewhat familiar withelectronic stability control,one of the most significantsafety advancements inrecent years, which helpsimprove steering and pre-vent rollover accidents.Almost one-third had neverheard of it at all.

• Forty-four percent ofrespondents were very orsomewhat familiar withbrake assist, which appliesadditional brake force inthe event of a sudden stop.

• Forty-three percentwere very or somewhatfamiliar with forward colli-sion warning, which alertsthe driver when sensorsdetect an imminent front-end impact.

• Only 28 percent werevery or somewhat familiar

with the lane departurewarning feature, whichwarns a driver that he orshe is drifting out of thedesignated lane on a high-way.

Forty-one percent ofrespondents had nevereven heard of the feature.

In contrast, Americansgave much higher marksfor convenience features,such as GPS (90 percent)and bluetooth accessories(77 percent).

And, when asked whichfeatures they wanted intheir next car, more peopleopted for convenience fea-tures such as GPS (63 per-cent) over safety featureslike electronic stability con-trol (45 percent).

Research from theNational Highway TrafficSafety Administration andthe Insurance Institute forHighway Safety shows thatelectronic stability controlsignificantly decreases the

likelihood of a single-vehi-cle crash by up to 59 per-cent and provides a 23 per-cent reduction in the prob-ability of fatal crashes.

Starting this year, elec-tronic stability control is astandard feature on all newpassenger cars in the U.S.

Although safety technol-ogy can help to makeAmerica’s roadways safer,the fact remains: Noamount of technology canreplace the safety benefit ofan experienced driverbehind the wheel.

“Auto manufacturershave made significantstrides with regard to safetyinnovations over the past 10years, but the ultimate safe-ty feature is an alert andprepared driver,” saysMoore.

“Technology advance-ments have greatlyimproved the comfort andsafety of cars, but overre-liance on these features canbe dangerous - drivers needto remember that it’s stillup to them to operate theirvehicles in a safe andresponsible manner.”

Further-more, the SE’s generousroster of standard featuresalso includes a navigationsystem, a back-up cameraand an upgraded stereowith satellite radio. As anautomobile, the 2011 Mitsu-bishi Galant is a proven

package. And in content-rich SE trim, it might evenseem like a bit of a bargain.

The 2011 MitsubishiGalant is a midsize sedanavailable in ES and SE trimlevels. Standard features onthe ES include 16-inch steelwheels, full power acces-sories, air-conditioning, atilt-only steering wheel,cruise control, driver-seatheight adjustment and asix-speaker stereo with CDplayer and auxiliary audiojack.

The SE adds a powersunroof, 18-inch alloywheels, foglights, a back-up

camera, heated mirrors, arear spoiler, automatic cli-mate control, auto-dim-ming rearview mirror, dualilluminated vanity mirrors,a leather-wrapped steeringwheel (with audio con-

trols), an eight-way powerdriver seat (includes lum-bar adjustment), heatedfront seats, Bluetooth, navi-gation system, color LCDscreen and an eight-speak-er Rockford Acoustic

Design audio system withsix-CD changer and satel-lite radio.

Every Mitsubishi Galantis powered by a 2.4-literfour-cylinder engineattached to a four-speed

automatic. Output is 160 hpand 157 pound-feet oftorque, totals that trailthose from almost all of theGalant’s competition. Fueleconomy is an estimated 21mpg city/30 mpg highwayand 24 mpg combined.

On the upside, the pas-senger package is relativelyroomy considering theGalant’s size, and the seatsprove to be softly cush-ioned. The trunk offers 13.3cubic feet of capacity, just afoot or two less than thecompetition although theopening is usefully wide.

The 2011 MitsubishiGalant maintains a flat, pre-dictable stance and feelssmaller than it is. A surpris-ing amount of road feel iscommunicated through thedriver seat and the steeringand it is quick and respon-sive. None of this entertain-ment comes at the expenseof ride quality, which issmooth, forgiving and idealfor weekday commutes.

The 2011 MitsubishiLancer is one of the sporti-est options among afford-able small cars. It receivessolid marks for its handlingand comfortable frontseats. The car gets the jobdone. Overall, the 2011Mitsubishi Lancer is a goodchoice for shoppers whowon’t do more than drive towork and get groceries.Mitsubishi didn’t designthe car to be a drag racer,and consumers shouldn’texpect any more than a lit-tle spunk from the Lancer.

The 2011 MitsubishiLancer is a compact sedanavailable in DE, ES, GTSand Ralliart trim levels (theLancer Evolution isreviewed separately).

The base DE comes with16-inch steel wheels, rock-er-sill bodywork exten-sions, a tilt-only steeringwheel, full power acces-sories, a trip computer anda four-speaker CD/MP3

stereo. The ES comes withall the aforementioneditems and adds air-condi-tioning, cruise control, key-less entry, upgraded uphol-stery, a 60/40-split rear seatwith a center armrest, man-ual driver-seat heightadjustment, steering-wheelaudio controls and an auxil-iary audio jack for thestereo.

The GTS gains a morepowerful engine, 18-inchalloy wheels, foglights, arear spoiler, a sport-tunedsuspension, keyless igni-tion/entry, automatic cli-

mate control, sport bucketfront seats with upgradedfabric, the Fuse voice-acti-vation system, Bluetoothand a six-speaker stereowith a USB port. TheRalliart ups the perform-ance ante with a tur-bocharged engine, an auto-mated dual-clutch manualtransmission (with shiftpaddles) and all-wheeldrive. Also included issatellite radio.

Many features listed arealso available on lower trimcars as stand-alone optionsor as part of bundled pack-ages.

The Alloy Wheel pack-age adds 16-inch alloywheels to the ES trim alongwith rear disc brakes(instead of drums) and arear stabilizer bar. Severalcosmetic and aerodynamicenhancement options arealso available for the DEand ES trims.

A Touring package is

available for GTS andRalliart trims and featuresxenon headlights, a sun-roof, a smaller rear spoiler,rain-sensing wipers,

leather seats and a nine-speaker Rockford Fosgatesound system with an in-dash six-CD changer andsatellite radio.

Also optional on all butthe DE trim is a navigationsystem that features a 30GBhard drive capable of stor-ing digital music files.
