Throaty rumbles and nimble handling aren’t just for sport coupes. Meet the all-new 2016 Lexus GS F performance sedan. It is not a standard luxury sedan or track car. The GS F rolled into the North American International Auto Show today with a growl, four doors and enough cabin space to comfortably accommodate five adults.

The GS F sports sedan, which combines a luxury cruiser with the handling of a sports car, is the latest vehicle to join the company’s high-performance “F” lineage that began in 2008 with the IS F sedan, then the fabulously exotic LFA in 2012, and just last year, the RC F coupe. Based on the mid-size GS luxury sedan, the GS F should not be confused with the GS 350 F SPORT. The GS F builds upon the GS 350 F SPORT with a comprehensive set of upgrades that re-engineer the car. “The cars with the ‘F’ designation are meant to generate a very positive feeling when you’re behind its steering wheel, to be something that’s fun to drive no matter who is driving or where it’s being driven,” said Yukihiko Yaguchi, GS F chief engineer. “With the GS F, we wanted to make a special car that not only would exceed the expectations of the most discerning driving enthusiast, but also something that most people can enjoy. In that way, the GS F embraces the virtues of sound, response and power, the cornerstones of the Lexus ‘F’ brand.”

A Naturally Aspirated V8 and Dynamic Eight-Speed GearboxUnder the hood will be a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 that produces a sonorous 467 hp (473 PS)*and peak torque of 389 lb.-ft. (527 Nm)* with a 7,300 rpm redline.The powerplant will be mated to a quick-acting eight-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters for manual-shifting capabilities.

The GS F also has four different driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport and Sport S+, the latter designed specifically for the racetrack or your favorite challenging road. As sweet-sounding and powerful as the engine is, the DOHC 32-valve powerplant can offer a measure of fuel efficiency, incorporating the Atkinson cycle in certain driving conditions.

Handling Honed on the Famed NürburgringThe GS F will feature structural reinforcements and an exclusive suspension system matched to the car’s added power. The newest member of the “F” line boasts a level of handling and agility uncommon in a mid-size luxury sedan that was honed on Japanese circuits such as Fuji Speedway and perfected on the famous Nürburgring Nordeschleife. The GS F’s impressive track and twisty road manners are the result of a custom firm suspension, along with wider forged wheels shod with staggered Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (255/35-19 front, and 275/35-19 rear). The suspen-sion combined with an enhanced braking system relying on 15-inch front rotors that are available with bright orange 6-piston calipers help give the GS F remarkable high-speed handling and braking capability. Carrying over 300 pounds less mass than key German sedan competitors, the GS F offers a near sports car level of nim-bleness and agility. These features help provide near-neutral handling balance and a high degree of driver control.

At the rear of the car, Lexus’ Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD) with two elec-tro-mechanical clutch packs, will be part of a long line of standard equipment that’ll make the GS F’s handling stand out from the crowd. The TVD features three operat-ing modes: • Standard (default) provides a balance of agility and firmness; • Slalom emphasizes nimble steering response and agility; and • Track emphasizes control during high-speed circuit driving. Distinctive Styling That Defines “Form Follows Function”“Fun to drive, it’s what characterizes all cars wearing the F badge, and it was our intent to design the GS F to exude that character,” said Yoshiharu Nakajima, project chief designer, Lexus Design Division. “The styling philosophy of the GS F is one of form following function. For example, the GS F’s spindle grille was born to further enhance the car’s aerodynamics and internal cooling, while the air outlets in the front fenders, first applied in the IS F and then the RC F, have been adopted in the GS F because of its efficiency. The styling direction of the GS F is one that promotes Lexus’ commitment to ‘Progressive Luxury,’ and I feel this car conveys that brand message flawlessly.”



The GS F features a unique version of Lexus’ trademark “spindle” grille, with a dis-tinctive mesh pattern reserved for F models, and large gaping air vents that have been integrated into the front fascia. Slim canted LED headlights with the signature Lexus L-shaped daytime running lamps complete the car’s aggressive face. The GS F sits noticeably lower and wider than other GS models, resulting in a planted stance that, along with its front fender air outlets, forged 19-in. alloy wheels, and carbon fiber accents make it instantly recognizable as an F model. The rear is highlighted by a subtle carbon-fiber rear spoiler and trapezoidal tailpipes with four chrome exhaust tips that powerfully suggest that this car is meant to be driven hard.

Inside the sheet metal, the GS F’s cabin is designed to exude the look and feel of a jet fighter’s cockpit. The interior is styled in an elegant form-follows-function theme, with all controls placed within easy reach of the driver. Residing behind the exclu-sive “F” branded steering wheel, is an electronic instrument cluster that can be con-figured among four different displays, depending on the driver’s preferred driving style: Normal, Eco, Sport S and Sport S+. Also, custom front and rear seats have been implemented to provide the vehicle’s occupants with more lateral support while not sacrificing comfort.



Along with all the sporty touches, the GS F retains a luxurious feel, thanks partly to the high-grade Alcantara trim on the doors, on the center console and above the instrument panel. An analog clock adds a touch of class to the already elegant dash-board that features a 12.3” central video monitor controlled by the Remote Touch Interface on the center console. The GS F offers the optional 17-speaker Mark Levin-son Premium Audio system that will satisfy the most demanding of audiophiles, but when drivers want to listen to the music provided by the engine, they can simply change the drive mode to “Sport” or “Sport S+” to engage the Active Sound Control. The Active Sound Control system is similar to the one found in the RC F but is en-hanced with rear speakers. All occupants can enjoy the driving experience complete with robust exhaust note. Adoption of the New Standard Comprehensive Safety Package, Lexus Safety System

The GS F will feature an updated suite of standard safety features including Pre-Col-lision System with automatic braking and pedestrian detection, Radar Cruise Con-trol with full stop from certain speeds, Lane Keep Assist, Automatic High Beam and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. This package of features is called Lexus Safety System+.



New Racing Logo to Enhance “F” Brand Appeal

Motorsports has become a growing passion for Lexus, evidenced by its active par-ticipation in the Super GT racing series when it introduced the SC 430 GT500 race-car in 2006, and the launch of the RC F to Super GT racing series in 2014. As further proof of its intentions to develop a globally unified approach to top tier racing, Lexus has created a new organization to spearhead such efforts and intro-duced the new Lexus Racing logo at the North American International Auto Show. The new, sharp-looking logo is meant to enhance the appeal of Lexus’ “F” brand, which includes the GS F, while letting the motorsports world know that it’s serious about international GT3 racing, officially designated by the Fédération Internatio-nale de l’Automobile (FIA) as “Group 3: Cup Grand Touring Cars.”

Craftsmanship Defines The All-New 2015 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Edition

From its introduction in 1999, the Cadillac Escalade quickly became the standard among luxury SUVs, with a formula of bold design, powerful capability and luxu-rious accommodations. The all-new 2015 Escalade takes design and technical ele-ments from Cadillac’s product expansion to elevate the brand’s signature SUV.

The fourth-generation Escalade has an entirely new exterior design yet is instantly recognizable. Inside, cut-and-sewn materials and wood trim, chosen for elegance and authenticity, combine with the latest technologies to convey an exceptional level of luxury.

“Cadillac’s ongoing growth provides the ideal stage for the all-new Escalade to take a major step forward,” said Uwe Ellinghaus, chief marketing officer, Global Cadil-lac. “Escalade has always had a bold character, differentiating itself from other lux-ury SUVs. Now, Escalade adds more sophistication, with advanced technology and hand-tailored craftsmanship.”



The product line includes the standard Escalade and the extended-length ESV edi-tion, which offers a 14-inch-longer (355 mm) wheelbase and approximately 20 inch-es (508 mm) more in overall length, maximizing space for third-row passengers and nearly double the cargo space behind the third-row seat.

Luxury and Premium collections are available in addition to the base models, offer-ing higher levels of content and technology. And all models are offered with 2WD and 4WD drivetrains, as well as a new 6.2L V-8 engine that is more powerful and more efficient than previous models.

In fact, it’s powerful enough to enable 0 to 60 mph performance in less than 6 sec-onds – 5.96 seconds for Escalade 4WD and 5.98 seconds for Escalade ESV 2WD.The new 6.2L engine also delivers an EPA-estimated 21 mpg on the highway (Esca-lade 2WD/4WD and Escalade ESV 2WD). That’s about 17 percent greater efficiency on the highway than previous models, and also about 17 percent greater efficiency than Mercedes-Benz GL550 (18 mpg) – and nearly 24 percent greater than Lexus LX 570 (17 mpg).



Cadillac’s Magnetic Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension system, is standard, delivering precisely controlled driving performance. And at its core, Es-calade is an SUV with the capabilities of a full-size truck, enabling a trailering rat-ing of 8,300 pounds on the standard model and an 8,100-pound rating on Escalade ESV. That’s more than Mercedes-Benz GL550 (7,800 pounds), Lexus LX 570 (7,000 pounds) and Land Rover Range Rover (7,716 pounds).

Cadillac designEscalade’s new design provides a signature look of quality, elegance and capability. The styling cues combine sculpted surfaces and high technology embellishments to give Escalade a unique and stand-out appearance.

“At a glance, it is undeniably and unmistakably a Cadillac Escalade,” said Bob Boni-face, Cadillac exterior design director. “It is powerful in size and presence, with inte-grated technologies that push its design to the leading edge.”19 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


Dynamic front styling cues are enhanced by a highly detailed Galvano chrome grille that has a unique, almost brushed appearance. It is accented by full light-emitting diode – LED – lighting in the front and rear that creates unique, razor-like vertical light signatures. LEDs provide even, steady and very bright illumination, while de-livering longer life and using significantly less energy than conventional lighting.

The headlamps incorporate the industry’s first Total Internal Reflection LED high-beam function, which consists of four vertically stacked crystal lenses and LEDs. The low beam consists of five crystal lenses and LEDs that create the light pattern. The Cadillac script is branded in the headlamp bezel. Tall, thin vertical LED taillamps reach to the top of the Escalade and feature the brand’s wreath-and-crest insignia, which illuminates in the dark.

New inlaid doors fit into the body side openings instead of over the top of the body, significantly improving the quietness of the interior and contributing to improved aerodynamics – an attribute that helps Escalade slip through the air on the highway with less drag for greater efficiency. Lightweight aluminum hood and aluminum lift-gate panels also enhance efficiency through reduced overall mass.



Additional exterior features include:The rear is dominated by signature LED lighting extending full-height, from the fas-cia to the roof. The twin, light-blade taillamps recall Cadillac’s design heritage

• Chrome-accented side assist steps are standard, with power-retractable assist steps with light-pipe technology available on the Premium Collection

• Illuminated door handles are included with the Premium Collection

• Standard heated, power-adjustable and power-folding outside mirrors

• Standard hands-free, power-programmable liftgate

• The standard rear spoiler on the liftgate houses a rear window wiper that is hid-den when not in use

• Capless fueling

Crafted interiorCraftsmanship defines the 2015 Escalade’s passenger space, which is designed to be one of the industry’s most authentic and luxurious cabins with seamless technolo-gy integration for today’s connected luxury customers. And like the exterior, there’s harmony with Cadillac’s other vehicles in the cabin’s appearance, amenities and con-trols.

“An exceptional level of craftsmanship is found in the 2015 Escalade, and it all cen-ters on the premium, layered materials and extensive use of cut-and-sew live stitch-ing – the way fine furniture is produced,” said Eric Clough, director of design, Ca-dillac Interiors. “We designed Escalade with what we call the beauty of contrast – a distinctive combination of bold, SUV character, but also the refinement of the Cadil-lac form vocabulary and technology.”

Real wood combined with premium cut-and-sewn materials and sueded accents, along with ambient lighting, were designed to add elegance to the interior design. Tight tolerances of the instrument panel and door panels, precision controls and triple-sealed doors were engineered and designed to reinforce a feeling of quality.



The seats were designed to be more comfortable and sculpted in appearance with a reclining second row. The design incorporates dual-firmness foam that ensures long-trip comfort and helps retain appearance over time.

Escalade is also a quieter environment, thanks to a stronger body structure, en-hanced use of noise-attenuating materials and processes, including triple-sealed doors and acoustic-laminate glass and Bose® Active Noise Cancelation technology. Even the exterior mirrors were carefully shaped in the wind tunnel to reduce wind noise.

Infotainment and connectivity Technology is integral to the Escalade’s driving experience. New and enhanced fea-tures help make what already was one of the industry’s most-connected vehicles more intuitive.

CUE – Cadillac User Experience – is standard. It is an advanced system for connec-tivity and control, featuring state-of-the-art voice recognition with touch controls common with the world’s most popular tablets and mobile devices. The eight-inch center screen uses capacitive touch technology and gesture recognition, enabling tapping and swiping common to smartphones and tablets.

The system also uses proximity sensors to activate common options and controls as the user’s hand approaches. An expanded “favorites” section offers quick access to phone contacts, navigation destinations – even digital music – in the same one-touch form as traditional radio presets.



The instrument cluster features a reconfigurable, high-resolution 12.3-inch digital driver information center (DIC) display paired with Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system, with data also shown on an available, full-color head-up display on Luxury and Premium Collections. Along with vehicle systems information, the DIC pro-vides details on the audio, Bluetooth phone and navigation systems, which can be adjusted via steering wheel controls.

Enhanced connectivity includes a new Text Messaging Alerts feature for smartphone users with Bluetooth profile (M.A.P.), which reads incoming texts through the vehi-cle’s speakers, and Siri Eyes Free for iPhone iOS 6 and iOS 7 users to enhance con-nectivity and convenience. Each enables voice-controlled connectivity, to help keep phones safely stowed and hands on the wheel.

Complementing CUE to enhance Escalade’s connectivity is new OnStar with 4G LTE and standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot (late availability). It provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on and comes with a three-month/three gigabyte data trial.

4G LTE is the most current and fastest mobile data network – 10 times faster than 3G and 100 times faster than the previous generation of OnStar hardware. And with OnStar, it also offers stronger, broader coverage than smartphones on the same net-work and it’s easy to use: If the vehicle is on, the connection is on.



At the time of purchase, six months OnStar Directions and Connections includes all of OnStar’s advisor-based safety and security features, including Automatic Crash Response and Stolen Vehicle Assistance, as well as Turn-by-Turn navigation.

Five years of OnStar Basic Plan includes RemoteLink Key Fob Services, allowing owners to remotely start and lock/unlock a car (if properly equipped), and activate the horn and lights from anywhere with a data connection. It also includes OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics, which runs monthly checks of a vehicle’s engine, transmission, anti-lock brakes and more, and Dealer Maintenance Notification, which sends diag-nostic report directly to a preferred dealer, simplifying service scheduling.

Bose Centerpoint audio systemThe 2015 Escalade features a new Bose Centerpoint® surround sound system that is the most advanced ever in a Cadillac. Customized exclusively for the Escalade, it features new technologies that help heighten the sophisticated in-vehicle experience.



Proprietary technologies and 16 strategically placed speakers create a concert-like experience throughout the cabin. Five custom-tuned speakers placed across the in-strument panel and front doors, combined with Bose Advanced Staging Technology, help reproduce expansive sound with exceptional precision and clarity.

Further enhancing the experience is Bose Centerpoint 2.0 signal processing technol-ogy, which enables a surround sound experience across all rows and SurroundStage® signal processing circuitry, which compensates for off-center vehicle seating to cre-ate 360-degree sound for every occupant. An available Blu-Ray DVD rear entertain-ment system is tied into the audio system and includes a nine-inch, roof-mounted screen on Escalade and two nine-inch screens on Escalade ESV. The overhead sys-tem also includes built-in remote storage, USB, SD car and RCA ports.

Performance and driving experienceEscalade performance advances with an all-new, more powerful and more efficient 6.2L V-8 engine rated at an SAE-certified 420 horsepower (313 kW) and 460 lb-ft of torque (623 Nm) – a nearly 5-percent increase in horsepower and 10-percent more torque.27 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


The greater torque delivers an enhanced feeling of power on demand and greater confidence when trailering. The new 6.2L features state-of-the-art technologies, in-cluding direct injection, Active Fuel Management – also known as cylinder deactiva-tion – continuously variable valve timing and an advanced combustion system, de-signed to make the most of power, torque and efficiency across the rpm band. More precisely controlled combustion enables Escalade to run with a higher compression ratio, which delivers greater power and greater efficiency.

The engine is matched with the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission with enhanced TapShift control.

Escalade’s performance is channeled to a more sophisticated chassis and suspension system, engineered for a greater feeling of solidity and a quieter, smoother ride. A fully boxed frame – composed of more than 75 percent high-strength steel – is the foundation for its ride quality.

Chassis and suspension highlights include:• A wider rear track that contributes to a more planted stance• Shear-style body mounts, which reduce body shake and enhance the feeling of

structural stiffness, improve damping performance when compared with previous compression mounts

• Addition of a cross-axis ball joint on the frame-side of the rear suspension lateral link that enhances steering precision

• Third-generation Magnetic Ride Control is standard, with two selectable modes. Its new, dual-electric-coil design enabled engineers to tune with more resolution to handle quickly changing road conditions

• New, electric variable-assist power steering system enhances fuel economy and tailors steering assist to vehicle speed

• New four-wheel-disc brake system with Duralife™ brake rotors that offer up to double the service life

• Revisions that improve pedal feel for more-confident braking performance• New tires designed to enhance efficiency, ride quality, handling and stopping per-

formance• Standard automatic locking rear differential that provides greater traction when

A new four-wheel-drive system enables the driver to select an Auto mode for set-it-and-forget-it automatic activation when conditions call for extra traction assist. A separate 4 HI mode offers the most capability for more challenging conditions.

Safety and security measuresEscalade’s new technologies include safety features to help protect occupants before, during and after a collision, such as front and rear automatic braking, which relies on short-range radar technology and ultrasonic sensors to help the driver avoid front and rear low-speed collisions via a progression of alerts that extend to com-plete braking, if necessary.

Also new is the segment’s only Front Center Air Bag. This feature deploys from the inboard side of the driver’s seat and inflates between the driver and front passenger, providing added protection for both front occupants in side-impact crashes.

A Driver Awareness package includes forward collision alert, lane departure warn-ing system, and the patented safety alert seat, which pulses the left, right or both seat cushion bolsters to alert the driver of a dangerous situation.29 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


A driver assist package adds full speed range adaptive cruise control, front and rear automatic braking, automatic collision preparation and automatic safety belt tight-ening.

Additionally, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert and lane change alert are standard on Luxury and Premium models.

The new Escalade has also been designed with greater security features to thwart thieves, including glass breakage sensors, motion detectors and a self-leveling incli-nation sensor that sounds an alarm if a thief attempts to steal wheels or tires, or tow or lift the vehicle onto a flatbed truck.

The advanced theft protection package also includes door shields in the driver’s door, which help block access to those using a “slim jim”-type unlocking device. Additional anti-theft features include enhanced door security, laminated windshield glass and a steering column lock.

Infiniti today lifts the virtual covers off the INFINITI CONCEPT Vision Gran Tur-ismo, a vision of what a high performance Infiniti could look like in the future. It was created through close collaboration with the creators of Gran Turismo, the rac-ing game franchise developed by Polyphony Digital Inc. that has sold more than 72 million copies worldwide. The INFINITI CONCEPT Vision Gran Turismo will be available for download starting today in Gran Turismo6 (GT6) exclusively on the PlayStation3 system.



The INFINITI CONCEPT Vision Gran Turismo is a project that started as an am-bitious global Infiniti Design competition to “design a pure Infiniti GT car.” The winning model was born from the theme put forward by Infiniti’s Design team in Beijing. Part beauty, part beast, its shape is powerful, sensual and audacious – a mix of a track machine and the dream of our Chinese design team to create an ambitious racing language for Infiniti.



The process of developing the design of the INFINITI CONCEPT Vision Gran Turismo started with hand sketching, then refined digitally, refined again by hand sculpting, and then returned to digital for final refinement.

This project went much further than being a mere design exercise. It included thor-ough examinations and calculations of technical features such as aerodynamics and engine performance. The front mid-ship / trans-axle powertrain enables the finely distributed 45:55 front/rear weight balance that fills users with the joy of driving by actively drifting the rear. As for aerodynamics, the under-floor airflow control, front and back diffusers, and uniquely shaped rear spoiler enable this car to demonstrate high performance without compromising the impact of the body design.



Today, automotive gaming enthusiasts are able to discover that performance first-hand when the concept car becomes available for download in Gran Turismo 6. Drivers who own GT6 will be the first to test drive the virtual concept car on world famous tracks across the globe.

Groundbreaking and seductive Italian styleContinuing the groundbreaking theme of technology, performance and Italian style, the all-new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider builds upon the brand’s journey, which was embarked upon with the 8C Competizione (2008), 8C Spider (2009), 4C Coupe (2015), and most recently, the 4C Spider Concept, which debuted at the 84th Inter-national Geneva Motor Show.

Inspired by the 33 Stradale, the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider transcends this leg-endary racecar’s mid-engine body forms and follows its purposeful and lightweight performance tradition with sheet-molded compound (SMC) composite panels forming its seductive Italian design, and “clothing” its state-of-the-art carbon fiber monocoque chassis and all-aluminum 1750 cc turbocharged, direct-injected engine.

Covering the “beating heart” of this Italian supercar is a deck-lid with three func-tional heat extractors and an aerodynamically tuned spoiler. And it’s from the 4C Spider’s “beating heart” where every other design element starts: two muscular forms straddle the rear hood and elevate the body above the cockpit’s beltline for visual strength and foundation for the black or available carbon fiber “halo.” The rear fascia and round rear LED illuminated taillamps blend into the muscular rear wings for a powerful stance, while stylistically incorporating large functional air intakes to cool the engine. Below, dual exhausts are mounted at the corners and highlight the 4C Spider’s supercar stance. Inspired by the 4C Spider Concept, an all-new, Akrapo-vic dual-mode center-mounted performance exhaust system will be available on the 4C Spider (late availability).



On each side of the all-new 4C Spider, the sculpted air intakes spring a muscular and dynamic form that lead elegantly into the headlamps. Highlighting its exotic mono-coque is a carbon fiber windshield frame, which promotes strength and lightness, while providing the attachment points for the removable, stowable cloth roof, or available exposed carbon fiber hardtop (late availability).

Leading from the 4C Spider’s windshield and down the hood are two muscular hood forms, which naturally conclude at the signature Alfa Romeo shield-shaped grille and emblem. Together with the two side air intakes designed in the front fascia, the 4C Spider forms the famous “Trilobo,” a significant facet of Alfa Romeo’s distinctive design.

Performance-focused cockpitThe all-new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider’s cockpit is inspired from racing, purpose built with only the essential driving components stylistically integrated.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider features two composite-framed sport seats with standard leather and an exposed carbon fiber monocoque that exemplifies its race-inspired technologies. Furthermore, a driver-oriented cockpit with flat-bottom, leather per-formance steering wheel with paddle-shifters and aluminum pedals speak to the brand’s racing spirit. For an upscale look, the fully wrapped premium-leather interi-or with accent stitching is standard on the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, as are unique car-bon fiber vent surrounds. New to the Alfa Romeo 4C lineup is the addition of an Alpine premium radio. De-signed for audiophiles, this new head unit enables the 4C Spider to offer its passen-gers premium sound quality and multiple connectivity and media options, including handsfree Bluetooth phone, Bluetooth streaming, USB port, iPod interface and CD/MP3 capabilities. In addition, the Alpine radio provides access to HD radio and Siri-usXM Radio for high-definition broadcast audio.

A vivid array of colors, materials and design detailsAdding to the excitement of owning an Alfa Romeo are the personalization options that each client can select.

Seven exterior colors are available for the 4C Spider, and include: Rosso Alfa, Black, White, Basalt Grey Metallic, Rosso Competizione Tri-coat, Madreperla White Tri-coat and all-new Giallo (yellow).

Complementing the 4C Spider’s exterior are six interior combinations, which in-clude two seat material choices: Black leather with Red accent stitching, Red leather with Red accent stitching, new Black leather with Giallo accent stitching, and ex-clusive to the Track Package – Black racing leather seats with microfiber inserts and Red or Yellow accent stitching.



For a bespoke look, and all-new to the 4C model lineup, a contrasting Tobacco leather with Black accent interior will be available later in the model year. This pre-mium configuration features the dual color treatment on the instrument, door pan-els and steering wheel.

With the arrival of the 4C Spider are four all-new wheel designs, which include stag-gered fitting 17 x 7.0-inch (front) and 18 x 8.0-inch (rear) alloy wheels in Silver or Dark finish. For added style and performance, larger 18 x 7.0-inch (front) and wider 19 x 8.5-inch (rear) forged wheels in Silver or Dark Grey finish are also available. Mid-engine layout with a unique set of technological solutionsThanks to its mid-engine layout, advanced technology and compact size, the all-new 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider demonstrates its precision, agility and performance credentials with a top speed of 160 miles per hour (mph), 0-to-60 mph acceleration blasts in an estimated 4.1-seconds, 1.1 g of lateral acceleration and 1.25 g of maxi-mum braking deceleration.45 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


Delivering the ultra-lightweight architecture needed for maximum performance and dynamic efficiency, Alfa Romeo engineers looked to Formula 1 and only the most advanced supercars for state-of-the-art materials. The result is a monocoque chas-sis made entirely of unilateral, “pre-preg” carbon fiber layers that are hand-laid for extraordinary stiffness and strength. At 236 pounds, the highly exotic carbon fiber monocoque chassis delivers a material performance that is three-times stronger and seven-times lighter than steel. Completing the competition-grade architecture are front- and rear-chassis structures and an engine-mounting frame made from light-weight aluminum.

Thanks to the monocoque’s inherent rigidity, Alfa Romeo engineers were able to minimize structural differences between the 4C Spider and 4C Coupe. For a techni-cal look, header strength and to keep the center of gravity low, the 4C Spider features a unilateral carbon fiber windshield frame that is adhered and bolted to the mono-coque chassis. In addition, a specially contoured aluminum rollbar (underneath the black or carbon fiber “halo”) provides mounting points for the new rear decklid, while unique upper body brackets and a high-strength steel engine compartment cross beam maximize torsional rigidity.

Alfa Romeo engineers continued the use of state-of-the-art materials by creating the bodywork entirely of SMC (sheet molded compound), a low-density, high-strength composite material that is 20 percent lighter and dimensionally more rigid than steel. Engineers even optimized the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider’s windshield and side windows by using 10 percent thinner glass to reduce weight by up to 15 percent.



Finally, two sport seats feature a carbon fiber and fiberglass reinforced-composite structure to deliver the strength and seating position needed for performance driv-ing.

The heart and soul: The all-aluminum 1750 cc turbocharged engine with direct injectionThe engine is the “beating heart” of any Alfa Romeo, and for the all-new 2015 4C Spider, it beats to an innovative, all-aluminum 1750 cc turbocharged and intercooled engine with dual (intake and exhaust) continuous variable-valve timing (VVT) that delivers 237 horsepower – or an impressive 136 horsepower-per-liter.

To ensure exceptional performance and drivability on the racetrack or city streets, the 1750 cc turbocharged engine features cutting-edge technologies. High pressure direct-injection (2,900 psi/200 bar) with multi-hole fuel injectors provide a more even spray. To increase performance, while reducing oil consumption and emissions, the cylinder head inlet ducts have an optimized design, while cylinder liners are made from thin cast-iron. The addition of an electric thermostat helps the 1750cc turbo engine reduce warm-up times and tailpipe emissions. Minimizing vibration at higher engine speeds, the engine’s crankshaft features eight counter weights. Last, intake and exhaust systems are optimized for Alfa Romeo 4C Spider’s mid-engine layout.



A new generation turbocharger features a pulse-converter exhaust manifold to exploit pressure waves and boost torque at low-engine speeds. A waste gate valve adjusts turbo pressure and improves the engine’s efficiency. Advanced turbo tech-nology enables the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider to maximize torque at low engine speeds and deliver more response to driver input by increasing combustion efficiency and turbine speed, all while eliminating turbo lag. As a result, torque delivery is instan-taneous, with a peak of 258 ft.-lb. (350 N•m); 80 percent of which is available at only 1,700 rpm.

Three available exhaust systems, including an all-new Akrapovic dual-mode system From the 4C Spider Concept to production, the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider will offer its most hardcore motorsport enthusiasts an all-new Akrapovic dual-mode ex-haust system with Alfa Romeo’s signature resonant sound (late availability).

Developed in cooperation with the racing exhaust experts at Akrapovic, this beauti-fully crafted titanium system consists of two center-mounted tailpipes, computer-op-timized asymmetrical mufflers with a dual-mode exhaust valve system and link pipe with resonator to eliminate in-cabin droning. For a technical look that emphasizes 4C Spider’s lightweight design, a carbon fiber bezel surrounds the Akrapovic center mounted exhaust tips.

Like the 4C Coupe, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider will also offer the standard exhaust system and a racing exhaust system. Similar in design, the optional racing exhaust removes the muffler, and instead integrates a uniquely designed asymmetric Y-shape system after the catalyst. For added style, the racing exhaust system features integrat-ed dual concentric exhaust tips.



Advanced technological solutions: Alfa TCT twin-clutch and Alfa DNA selector tech-nologies further make the 4C Spider an extension of the driver Teamed to the all-aluminum 1750 cc turbocharged engine is a paddle-shifting Alfa TCT (twin-clutch transmission) tuned specifically for the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider. With its uniquely calibrated software that adjusts with the Alfa DNA selector system, the Alfa TCT’s gearshifts are designed to become most aggressive in the Dy-namic and Race modes. Further making this Alfa Romeo an extension of the driver are rev-matching paddle shifts and precise gear changes as quick as 130 milliseconds at full throttle.

For driving convenience in Dynamic, Natural or All-weather modes, the Alfa Ro-meo TCT gearbox can utilize an “auto” mode.

Instantaneously optimizing the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider’s level of performance is the brand’s innovative Alfa DNA selector. With four modes, including “Race” mode, the Alfa DNA selector can optimize the engine, transmission, Alfa Electronic Q2 differ-ential and electronic stability control (ESC) calibrations to the levels needed by the driver. With a touch of the Alfa DNA selector, the driving dynamics of the Alfa Ro-meo 4C Spider can be changed to (in order of increasing capability):

• All-weather – designed to ensure maximum control in adverse weather condi-tions and enables gentler accelerator input and special engine and brake control logic to match road speed and prevent skidding

• Natural – enables grand touring comfort and smooth drivability for the Alfa TCT gearbox

• Dynamic – enables improved driving performance via a more aggressive power-train calibration and less intrusive ESC setting

• Race – Available while in Dynamic mode, Race mode is the most extreme perfor-mance mode, putting the driver in total control of the car under race conditions. ESC and anti-slip regulation (ASR) are deactivated to allow the driver to control traction through the accelerator pedal. The Alfa Electronic Q2 differential control system remains active for fast exits out of corners or bends

• In Race mode, launch control can be activated, allowing the Alfa Romeo 4C Spi-der to deliver 0-to-60 mph acceleration blasts as low as 4.1-seconds as soon as the driver releases the brake



Maximum road-holding suspension The all-new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider adopts race-derived solutions to ensure maxi-mum agility and road holding performance. The front suspension is comprised of a “superimposed” double wishbone configuration for direct and unfiltered feedback. At the rear, an advanced MacPherson suspension ensures superb road-holding attri-butes – even in the most extreme of maneuvers. Both front and rear suspensions are made from aluminum and high-strength steel. For the North American market, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is designed with stiffer springs, larger front- and rear-sway bars, and re-tuned shock absorbers.

Track PackageFor maximum handling performance, the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is available with the Track Package. This package includes high-performance shock absorbers with larger front- and rear-sway bars, larger and staggered fitting 18 x 7-inch (front) 19 x 8.5-inch (rear) forged-aluminum wheels with available Pirelli P-Zero “AR Rac-ing” tires, performance flat-bottom steering wheel with microfiber inserts, carbon fiber exterior mirrors and carbon fiber gauge cluster bezel, plus the availability of Black leather performance seats with microfiber inserts and Red or Yellow accent stitching.



Enthusiast-desired “manual” steeringIn line with the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider’s ultra-lightweight design and desire for max-imum agility and road feel, the conventional power steering system is removed alto-gether. Through a manual steering system and 15.7:1 quick-ratio steering, the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider provides the driver with maximum feel-of-the-road. At CES, BMW is unveiling ways in which Laserlight, extensively integrated with as-sistance systems and vehicle sensors, can be used to implement new intelligent light-ing functions for enhanced safety and comfort. For example, it can work with the navigation system to illuminate corners well in advance, while a laser-based Dynam-ic Light Spot can provide early warning of people or animals at night from a distance of up to 100 metres.



New lighting technology opens up design scopeThe BMW M4 Concept Iconic Lights model, with exterior paintwork in Cool White metallic, features a new interpretation of the typical BMW twin round headlights. On the move, the laser technology can be identified by the fine blue strips inside the lights. Meanwhile, the rear light clusters of the BMW M4 Concept Iconic Lights model are based on OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes), which produce light from wafer-thin semiconducting layers of organic material. For the first time, both the tail lights and rear direction indicators feature OLED technology. The illuminat-ed surfaces are positioned to produce a three-dimensional effect. OLEDs also take up less room on account of their thin size.

Shining example of innovative technology: anti-dazzle Laserlight and laser projectionBMW Laserlight sets new standards in terms of beam range and brightness. Inside the laser headlights, the “coherent” monochromatic blue laser light is converted into harmless white light. A special optical system directs the rays from the high-perfor-mance diodes onto a phosphor plate inside the light, which converts the beam into a very bright white light that is similar to natural daylight and pleasant to the eye. also has a beam range of up to 600 metres, more than twice that of conventional headlights, for increased safety in the dark. The camera-based BMW Selective Beam system, which is controlled by dynamic actuators, prevents oncoming or preceding vehicles being dazzled and allows the laser high beam to be left on at all times.

Enhanced safety through connectivityExtensive integration of the innovative Laserlight with other vehicle systems allows a variety of intelligent lighting functions to be implemented. Integration with the navigation system, for example, allows the proactive Adaptive Headlight control system to illuminate corners even before the steering wheel is turned. Laserlight also adds a new dimension to the Night Vision system’s Dynamic Light Spot function. In pitch-dark conditions, people and animals can be detected from a distance of up to 100 metres, by infrared camera, and “spotlighted” by the laser-based Dynamic Light Spot. This is a longer range than that of any other system. Also, if the vehicle detects reduced clear road width ahead, the laser headlights can be used to provide “narrow clearance” lighting. A laser projection function indicates the exact width of the ve-hicle in relation to the road to allow safe passage through the narrow space. BMW M4 Concept Iconic Lights also showcases a further “visionary” system: “High Power Laser” diodes. This system projects driver information directly onto the road in front



of the vehicle, allowing drivers to concentrate optimally on the traffic even in pitch darkness.

OLED rear light cluster with three-dimensional effectOrganic light-emitting diodes – OLEDs – are an innovative, efficient, sustainable light source that form the basis for the BMW Organic Light system. OLEDs have a low power consumption, which helps to further reduce vehicle CO2 emissions. An-other sustainable feature of this technology is the fact that no expensive rare earth metals are required in the production process.

Unlike ordinary LEDs, which are a point light source, OLEDs produce light uni-formly over their entire surface. The OLED elements are very thin, with a thickness of just 1.4 millimetres. Also, the individual modules can be activated separately, generating new possibilities for creating different lighting effects at the rear light clusters.

Different lighting effects in different driving modesIn the past, rigorous legal requirements regulating the brightness of vehicle lighting have limited the number of lighting functions that it was possible to implement with 61 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


OLED technology. On the BMW M4 Concept Iconic Lights model, BMW Organic Light is used in the tail lights and rear direction indicators. By activating the OLED segments individually, it is possible to create different rear lighting effects in different driving modes. Whereas normally the L-shape is wide and uniformly illuminated, in Sport mode a different-shaped light pattern can be used by activating only some of the OLED segments. The rear light then appears as a narrow, focused and sharply defined “strip” of light.

New technologies create new design optionsLighting is an important design element in modern vehicles. From the front, all ve-hicles of the BMW core brand are instantly identifiable by the combination of their twin round headlights and the hallmark kidney grille. At night, the four glowing corona rings form a distinctive signature.

The BMW M4 Concept Iconic Lights model presents a new interpretation of the twin circular headlight theme. The headlights feature laser technology which is attractively highlighted by fine blue LED strips when the vehicle is on the move. Thanks to the new laser technology it was also possible to give the headlights a flat and sharply sculpted design.



The L-shaped rear light clusters are just as distinctive in terms of styling as the front lights. The “L” shape is a typical design hallmark that accentuates the width of the rear and gives the vehicle a striking and powerful look that always stands out from the crowd, whether at night or during the daytime. On current models, LED-pow-ered light strips and other light elements emphasize the L-shape at night and make the brand identity more easily recognizable in the dark.

BMW first presented a rear light cluster with OLED elements on the BMW Vision Future Luxury concept model, which made its world debut in Beijing in April 2014. BMW M4 Concept Iconic Lights displays its own version of this design. Its M-style OLED rear light cluster marks a new evolution of the typical BMW L-shaped light-ing design which, with the BMW 7 Series launch, was reinforced with a distinctive “glowing” effect. OLED technology makes it possible to create a new, more three-di-mensional and at the same time very sharply defined appearance.

Twenty-five years after the debut of the original, paradigm-shifting NSX super-car, Acura revealed the production version of its highly anticipated successor—the next-generation Acura NSX, developed and produced in the U.S.—to the world’s auto media at the 2015 North American International Auto Show today. The pro-duction model, in a scintillating NSX Red finish, took the stage with a growl from its twin-turbocharged engine.

The next generation NSX showcases the production styling, design and specifi-cations of Acura’s mid-engine sports hybrid supercar, and Acura announced key details of the all-new vehicle’s design and performance. The company will begin accepting custom orders for the new NSX starting in the summer, with customer deliveries expected later in the year.

"Acura takes the wraps off its highly anticipated next-generation NSX supercar, designed to deliver a groundbreaking “New Sports eXperience"

Specifically created to bring a “new sports experience” to the supercar segment, the NSX challenges conventional beliefs about supercars — much as the first genera-tion did a quarter century ago. The approach is realized through an all-new power unit—a twin-turbocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and three-electric motor Sport Hybrid system—integrated with an ultra-rigid and lightweight multi-material body with world’s-first material appli-cations and manufacturing processes.

Developed under the concept of a “human-centered supercar,” a car that puts the driver first in every aspect of its design, the next-generation NSX will leverage its state-of-the-art hybrid supercar power unit, body and chassis to deliver exceptional-ly intuitive and immediate response to driver inputs.

“Our commitment was to create an all-new NSX that is true to the heritage of NSX—a supercar that delivers a new driving experience, one where every part of the vehicle is respectful of the smartest part of the car, the driver,” said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president and general manager of the Acura division. “The soul of a car is the emotional connection it makes with the driver. With the NSX, that connection will be intense and immediate.”

As the pinnacle representation of Acura performance and prestige, the NSX was in-troduced at the auto show under the theme of “Precision Crafted Performance.” The theme was the original tagline for the Acura brand, a guiding force behind the devel-opment of the original NSX and a critical component of its launch. The development of next-generation NSX, driven by precision crafted performance, has resulted in a clean-sheet design, which involved nearly three years of intensive development effort by a global design and engineering team led by engineers at the company’s develop-ment center in Raymond, Ohio.

“The NSX reflects Acura’s American roots and makes a powerful statement about the strong role being played by our North American operations in envisioning and building the future of Acura,” said Erik Berkman, executive vice president of the Acura Business Planning Office.



“Our global team embraced the challenge to create a new sports car experience, leveraging new technology to deliver incredibly vivid performance in a vehicle that responds intuitively and immediately to the will of the driver,” said Ted Klaus, chief engineer and global development leader of the new NSX. “The NSX delivers pin-nacle supercar performance, with zero-delay acceleration and exhilarating, confi-dence-inspiring driving dynamics.”

Interwoven Dynamic Exterior Design“The new NSX is a product of what we term ‘Interwoven Dynamic’ design,” said Mi-chelle Christensen, NSX exterior design project leader. “It represents the ideal blend-ing of exotic sports car form and supercar function.”

The NSX body features classic low and wide proportions married to modern and alluring surfacing, an aggressive front design, and tail lights that pays homage to the original NSX. The signature side intake and floating C-pillar collects air to feed the mid-mounted engine and directs airflow over the rear deck to increase downforce. To accommodate the new longitudinally mounted twin-turbo V6 and 9-speed DCT, the production vehicle was lengthened (+3 inches) and widened (+1 inch) with a slightly more cab-forward package, compared with the proportions of the NSX Con-cept shown in 2012.



Every element of the exterior body design has been carefully fashioned for total air-flow management for both stability-enhancing downforce and vehicle systems cool-ing. The NSX has undergone extensive testing at the company’s state-of-the-art wind tunnel in Raymond, Ohio, leading to a number of significant changes from concept to final body design, including modified hood vents, new front fender vents, modi-fied side air intakes, and an optimized deck spoiler.

Human Support Cockpit“Consistent with the ‘human-centered supercar’ development concept, the NSX was designed from the inside out with an uncompromising focus on the driver,” said Johnathan Norman, NSX interior design project leader. “Like the original NSX, we created a ‘Human Support Cockpit’ that provides exceptional driver control, visibil-ity and packaging, but further advanced to meet the extreme performance expecta-tions of a modern supercar.” The NSX interior boasts exceptional forward visibility, simple and intuitive controls, and class-leading ergonomics most notably the seat, which features top-class holding performance with outstanding comfort and easy ingress/egress.



The NSX’s instrument cluster features a dynamic TFT display that responds to changes in the driver-selectable Integrated Dynamics System with pertinent graphics and information. The center console holds the Power button that readies the sport hybrid powertrain, nested in the center of the new Integrated Dynamics System dial control. Interwoven under the handcrafted leather dash panel is the exposed mid-frame a functioning chassis structural member that reflects the design aesthetic of a naked sport bike. An ultra-thin, yet super strong A-pillar design and low-mounted instrument panel minimize obstructions to the driver’s view of the road.

Sport Hybrid Power UnitIn keeping with the foundational philosophy of the original NSX, the next-gener-ation NSX is designed to provide a new sports car experience that maximizes the capabilities of the driver, delivering exceptionally intuitive and confidence-inspiring response “at the will of the driver.”

Acura engineers leveraged the company’s expertise both with high-performance engine and hybrid electric-drive technologies, as well as its two decades of experi-ence with industry-leading dynamic torque-vectoring technologies, including Su-per-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), to create the most sophisticated, techno-logically advanced and intelligent powertrain in the supercar universe.



At the heart of the NSX’s performance capabilities is an all-new mid-mounted, 75-degree, DOHC V6 engine with twin turbochargers mated to an Acura-developed 9-speed DCT. The V6 engine employs a race-inspired compact valve train and dry sump lubrication system to help lower the center of gravity. The all-new 9-speed DCT delivers synapse-quick gear changes and rev-matching downshifts. The rear direct-drive electric motor, housed between the engine and transmission, supports acceleration, braking and transmission shifting performance. The NSX’s front wheels are driven by twin independent high-output electric motors which deliver instanta-neous torque response and dynamic left-to-right torque distribution.

The NSX uses its front electric motors for dynamic torque vectoring in addition to enhancing acceleration and braking performance. The result is an instantaneous “zero delay” launch performance and handling response that seems to anticipate the driver’s desire. The NSX has undergone extensive testing at some of the world’s most challenging race circuits, including the famed Nurburgring.

Advanced Multi-Material BodyAlso in keeping with the legacy of NSX—the world’s first all-aluminum supercar—the new NSX features an innovative new multi-material body design with world’s-first material applications and construction processes.73 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


The NSX body utilizes a space frame design—an internal frame constructed of alu-minum, ultra-high strength steel and other advanced materials. Anchored by a car-bon fiber floor, torsional and bending forces are taken up entirely by this ultra-rigid structure which also utilizes advanced joining technologies.

The NSX features world’s-first casting technology that combines the design and manufacturing flexibility of a casting process with the strength and elongation prop-erties of a forged material, enabling significant weight reduction. The body panels are composed of a combination of aluminum and sheet molding composite (SMC).



Advanced Sport PackageThe NSX features an “Advanced Sports Package” with placement of key powertrain components –the mid-mounted engine, twin front motors and Sport Hybrid bat-tery pack and power control unit – optimized to concentrate vehicle mass low and toward the center of the vehicle, to further enhance dynamic response. The combi-nation of this packaging concept and the lightweight body give the NSX the lowest center of gravity in its class.

The NSX utilizes a fully independent, all-aluminum front and rear suspension and puts its considerable power down through ContiSportContact™ high-performance tires—245/35Z R19 front and 295/30Z R20 rear—mounted on 19x8.5 inch front and 20x11 inch rear aluminum alloy wheels. Powerful, natural and confident braking performance is provided by 6-piston front and 4-piston rear monoblock calipers squeezing ultra-high performance carbon-ceramic brake discs.

Handling is greatly enhanced by Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All Wheel Drive (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD), enabling lightning-quick response to all driver inputs—steering, braking and throttle—along with the stability, control and launch perfor-mance of all-wheel drive. Agile Handling Assist (AHA) uses the subtle application of brake torque to further enhance yaw response and dynamic stability.



The NSX’s dial-operated Integrated Dynamic System features Quiet, Sport, Sport+ and Track modes. The system adjusts engine, motor, transmission and chassis re-sponse, as well as the engine sound level, based on the needs of the driver and driving environment. Quiet mode enables electric-only driving at lower speeds for short durations. Dynamic vehicle responses become increasingly sharp as the driv-er moves from Sport to Sport+ mode and, finally, to Track mode, where the NSX reveals the full spectrum of its performance capabilities. The NSX also features a “launch” function to achieve the ultimate in “zero delay” launch performance, aided by both the engine and three electric motors.

New Production FacilityThe NSX will be manufactured exclusively at the Performance Manufacturing Cen-ter (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio, where approximately 100 highly-skilled associates will conduct full body construction, paint, and final assembly using domestic and globally-sourced parts. The PMC and its processes have been developed to perfectly blend associate craftsmanship and technology in a new approach to manufacturing. By in-housing the body construction, Acura maintains complete control over total body quality, including critical strength, suspension accuracy, and fit and finish—from initial construction all the way to final assembly. Associates will utilize innova-tive techniques to deliver next-generation craftsmanship and world-class quality in the realm of specialized, supercar vehicle production.

Sure it’s nothing more than a concept, but the idea is certainly one worth taking a look at. The vehicle will be powered by a hybrid drivetrain that pairs a KERS system with a combustion engine to produce 1,200 horsepower. While this sounds pretty awesome, the manner in which it’s handled might ruffle more than a few feathers.

The Art Center College of Design graduate has ditched the iconic V12 in favor of a 900 horsepower twin-turbo V8 setup (paired with the 300 horsepower KERS sys-tem). The vehicle’s proposed weight of 1,763 pounds means the 2-seater would sprint to 62 mph in just 2.2 seconds with a top speed of 310 miles per hour. While many of us would have liked to see this thing powered by a naturally aspirated V12 en-gine, it’s worth noting that the legendary Ferrari F40 was also powered by the same twin-turbocharged V8 power plant. Not to mention this thing is drop dead gor-geous.



Though this Ferrari F80 Supercar is just a concept, there is still a good chance we migh see it end up in Forza Motorsport 6 as a downloadable car or in one of the future Gran Turismo racing titles. The F80 was inspired by the F40, but you can see a lot of the Enzo and LaFerrari influences. As a fan of the Ferrari automobiles, we would love to see this beautiful machine go into production in the near future. And for our final word we leave you with this idea. The Honda FCV Concept makes its North American debut at the 2015 North Amer-ican International Auto Show with U.S. availability of the production vehicle in 2016. In an effort to ensure Honda’s environmental vehicles remain strong competi-tors and provide a new sales-volume pillar, the company will offer several next-gen-eration, advanced powertrain vehicles, including a new battery-electric model and plug-in hybrid model by 2018.

Additionally, the company plans further application of its two- and three-motor hy-brid systems in the years to come. Together, these vehicles will offer significant vol-ume enabling Honda to bring ultra-low carbon transportation to consumers in the U.S. Honda also announced plans to introduce new VTEC Turbo engines to be built in Ohio and debut later in 2015.



Honda FCV ConceptThe Honda FCV Concept showcases the styling evolution of Honda’s next fuel-cell vehicle, anticipated to launch in the U.S. following its March 2016 introduction in Japan. The new Honda fuel-cell car will feature a spacious cabin with seating for five-passengers, a driving range estimated to be in excess of 300 miles, and an antici-pated refueling time of approximately 3 minutes at a pressure of 70 MPa. Its fuel cell stack, which fits entirely within under the hood, is 33 percent smaller with a 60 per-cent increase in power density compared to the outgoing Honda FCX Clarity.

As the next progression in Honda’s dynamic FCV styling, the Honda FCV Con-cept features a low, wide aerodynamic body with clean character lines. The interior strives to achieve harmony between man and machine by taking advantage of new powertrain packaging efficiencies delivering even greater passenger space than its predecessor, the 4-passenger Honda FCX Clarity fuel-cell vehicle. The Honda FCV Concept made its world debut in Japan on Nov. 17, 2014, followed by an announce-ment at the Los Angeles Auto Show that Honda will provide FirstElement Fuel with $13.8 million in financial assistance to build additional hydrogen refueling stations throughout the state of California in an effort to support the wider introduction of fuel-cell vehicles.

Next-Generation Advanced Powertrain VehicleIn addition to the all-new fuel-cell vehicle, by 2018 Honda will introduce several next-generation advanced powertrain vehicles that will leverage new Honda Earth Dreams Technology powertrains. New VTEC Turbo Engines

Before the end of the year, Honda will begin to introduce our new 4-cylinder VTEC Turbo engines – an extension of its Earth Dreams Technology powertrain lineup – that will deliver fun-to-drive performance while supporting fuel efficiency at a very high level.



Production of the new VTEC Turbo engines will begin later this year at Honda’s Anna, Ohio, engine plant, the largest automobile engine plant in Honda’s global pro-duction network. Honda is investing $340 million at the Anna Engine Plant to pro-duce the VTEC Turbo 4-cylinder engines using domestic and globally sourced parts, including the addition of a third assembly line for production of 4-cylinder engines and additional manufacturing innovations.

The new hands-free liftgate feature allows a customer with a keyless entry fob – and full hands – to open and close the liftgate by waving his or her foot under a sensor beneath the rear fascia. It is standard Denali.

Inside, the all-new 2015 Yukon’s precisely crafted interior features a quiet cabin, authentic materials and premium infotainment choices. Examples include soft-touch instrument panel, console and door panel materials with French seam stitching and purposeful use of ambient lighting in functional areas, including first- and sec-ond-row foot wells and the center console. All models have a standard Bose sound system, seats with dual-firmness foam and an ambient air vent designed to enhance comfort for front-seat passengers.

Denali models feature active noise cancelation technology to make the interior qui-eter.There are more storage options in the new Yukon lineup, including a compart-mentalized center console large enough to store a laptop or iPad with provisions for hanging file folders and other organizational features, for customers whose vehicle also serves as a rolling office.

Yukon’s new wireless phone charging feature allows users to simply place their phone on a small mat in the vehicle, where it charges via magnetic inductive charging without the need to plug it in. It is standard on SLT and Denali.



More capable, more comfortableThe 2015 Yukon lineup delivers greater capability and greater refinement through new and enhanced chassis and suspension systems. A fully boxed frame – composed of more than 75 percent high-strength steel – supports a quiet and controlled ride. New shear-style body mounts attached to the frame significantly improve stiffness and contribute to the Yukon’s smooth ride.

Compared with previous models, the driving experience of the new SUVs is further enhanced with:

IntelliLink and OnStar 4G LTE The 2015 GMC Yukon’s next-generation IntelliLink infotainment system is better connected and offers passengers more choices for their increasingly plugged-in life-styles. It provides easy, intuitive operation of basic functions, yet it is also highly customizable and capable of linking up to 10 devices such as smartphones, SD cards and MP3 players, giving customers more ways of staying connected.

Enhanced connectivity and convenience includes a new Text Messaging Alerts fea-ture for smartphone users with Bluetooth profile (M.A.P.), which reads incoming texts through the vehicle’s speakers, and Siri Eyes Free for iPhone iOS 6 and iOS 7 users to enhance connectivity and convenience. OnStar with 4G LTE and standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on and comes with a three-month/three-gigabyte data trial.

4G LTE is the most current and fastest mobile data network – 10 times faster than 3G and 100 times faster than the previous generation of OnStar hardware. And with OnStar, it also offers stronger, broader coverage than smartphones on the same net-work and it’s easy to use: If the vehicle is on, the connection is on. At the time of purchase, six months OnStar Directions and Connections includes all of OnStar’s advisor-based safety and security features, including Automatic Crash Response and Stolen Vehicle Assistance, as well as turn-by-turn navigation.



Five years of OnStar Basic Plan includes RemoteLink Key Fob Services, allowing owners to remotely start and lock/unlock a car (if properly equipped), and activate the horn and lights from anywhere with a data connection. It also includes OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics, which runs monthly checks of a vehicle’s engine, transmission, anti-lock brakes and more, and Dealer Maintenance Notification, which sends diag-nostic report directly to a preferred dealer simplify service scheduling. The OnStar with 4G LTE connection will arrive later in the 2015 model year.

Advanced powertrain technologyThe all-new Yukon family is more powerful and efficient than before, thanks to the new EcoTec3 engine family, which debuted in the 2014 Sierra. A 5.3L V-8 is stan-dard in Yukon and Yukon XL models and an exclusive 6.2L engine is standard in Denali models, delivering the segment’s best horsepower and torque – SAE-certified 420 horsepower (313 kW) and 460 lb-ft of torque (623 Nm).

The EcoTec3 engines feature state-of-the-art technologies, including direct injection, cylinder deactivation, continuously variable valve timing and an advanced com-bustion system, designed to make the most of power, torque and efficiency across a broad range of operating conditions. More precisely controlled combustion enables the new engines to run with a higher compression ratio, which delivers greater pow-er and efficiency.107 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


Hydraulic engine mounts, electronic throttle control, adaptive exhaust systems, im-proved aerodynamics and other technologies help the engines operate in four-cylin-der mode for longer periods of time with Active Fuel Management, further increas-ing efficiency.

The 5.3L V-8 is matched with the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmis-sion, while the 6.2L in the Denali features the all-new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission.

Designed and built by GM, the 8L90 features smaller steps between gears, compared to the previous six-speed automatic, keeping the engine within the sweet spot of the rpm band to make the most of its horsepower and torque to optimize performance and efficiency. With four simple gearsets for optimal efficiency and five clutches, creative packaging enables the 8L90 to fit the same space as the six-speed automatic, with a lower weight.

A wider 7.0 overall gear ratio spread provides a numerically higher 4.56 first gear ratio, helping drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering.



Safety technologiesThe new, 2015 GMC Yukon models are equipped with new standard and available driver-alert technologies that add layers of crash-avoidance protection, as well as en-hanced occupant protection in the event a crash occurs. They include the segment’s first Front Center Air Bag (front bucket seat models). This feature deploys from the inboard side of the driver’s seat and inflates between the driver and front passenger, providing added protection for both front occupants in side-impact crashes.

Active safety features use camera, radar and ultrasonic sensors to provide alerts and intervene when necessary to help avoid crashes, including an available safety alert seat that vibrates if the system determines the driver is at risk of colliding with an-other vehicle. Driver assistance begins with a standard rear vision camera that shows the area immediately behind the vehicle in the audio system screen. The camera is especially helpful when hooking up a trailer.

Additional standard and available driver alert technologies include:

Manufacturing and factory support

The new Yukon family is built at GM’s Arlington, Texas assembly plant.

GMC’s ProGrade protection program, for two years/24,000 miles (whichever comes first) of scheduled maintenance, is standard and covers four services of an oil change, tire rotation and 27-point inspection. It complements the three-year/36,000-mile (whichever comes first) bumper-to-bumper limited vehicle warranty and five-year/100,000-mile (whichever comes first) powertrain limited warranty for peace of mind.



Cadillac introduced the 2016 CTS-V, the most powerful product in the brand’s 112-year history and the newest entry in the elite class of the world’s highest-performing luxury cars.

Launching in late summer with 640 horsepower (477 kW), 630 lb-ft of torque (855 Nm) and a top speed of 200 mph, the new CTS-V reaches higher than its predeces-sors, leading Cadillac’s product-driven expansion and elevation. It is the third gener-ation of the acclaimed luxury sports sedan that launched the elite V-Series a decade ago – and redefined Cadillac for a new generation of enthusiasts.

“V-Series represents the very best of the Cadillac brand – the pinnacle of our de-sign and technical capabilities,” said Johan de Nysschen, Cadillac president. “The new CTS-V is the most compelling example of Cadillac’s product substance and brand trajectory. The new CTS-V soars into the stratosphere of the most exhilarat-ing luxury cars.” Comprehensive updates make the new CTS-V essentially two cars in one: a luxury sedan with sophisticated road manners and a track-capable sports car straight from the factory. It also introduces a new supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine backed by Cadillac’s paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission, featuring launch control and Performance Algorithm Shifting.



With more horsepower and torque than the Mercedes-Benz 5.5L biturbo V-8 and the BMW M-series 4.4L TwinPower (twin-turbo) V-8, the new CTS-V is capable of 0-60 performance in 3.7 seconds.

Track-honed design, chassis and suspension elements complement the supercharged powertrain and elevate CTS-V’s capability, performance and driver control to new thresholds, while enabling track driving without modifications or special proce-dures. Key performance technologies include:

• Standard carbon fiber hood and available carbon fiber vent, front splitter, rear spoiler and rear diffuser for greater aerodynamic performance

• Brembo high-performance brake system developed to provide durability, consis-tency and the capability for track-day performance straight from the factory

Additionally, the Performance Data Recorder in the CTS-V allows drivers to record high-definition video, with data overlays, of their driving experiences on and off the track, enabling sharing on social media.

More powerful supercharged V-8 engineThe power behind the new CTS-V’s capability is an all-new, more powerful 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine that makes more power more efficiently than the previous Cadillac supercharged engine. It employs a more-efficient, more-compact 1.7L su-percharger and matches it with direct injection and Active Fuel Management (cylin-der deactivation).

The supercharger’s rotors are smaller in diameter than the previous supercharged engine, allowing higher maximum rpm that enables power-enhancing boost to be generated earlier in the rpm band. That boost is achieved more efficiently via a more direct discharge port that creates less turbulence, reducing heat and speeding airflow into the engine.



The Cadillac supercharged engine also has several unique features designed to sup-port its high output and the greater cylinder pressures created by forced induction, including Rotocast A356T6 aluminum cylinder heads that are stronger and handle heat better than conventional aluminum heads, and lightweight titanium intake valves.

The CTS-V’s complementing eight-speed automatic is tuned for world-class shift-re-sponse times. Smaller steps between gears keep the engine within the sweet spot of the rpm band, making the most of the output of the supercharged engine for exhila-rating performance and greater efficiency.

The new 8L90 transmission offers full manual control via steering wheel paddles, and Performance Algorithm Shifting to deliver shift performance that rivals the du-al-clutch/semi-automatic transmissions found in many luxury performance sedans – but with the smoothness and refinement that come with a conventional automatic fitted with a torque converter.

Stronger structure enhances body motion controlThe CTS’s structure is highly mass optimized and designed to meet higher perfor-mance requirements, with enhancements to the V-Series developed to respond to cornering and torque loads that significantly exceed the levels experienced by the non-V models.



Unique and revised elements include: •Strut tower-to-tower brace •Strut tower-to-plenum brace •V-braces for the engine compartment •Strengthened rocker bulkhead •Stronger rear cradle-to-rocker braces •A unique aluminum shear panel at the front of the chassis •Upper tie bar-to-bumper braces.

The enhancements bolster structural stiffness by 25 percent over non-V models, for more precise handling and steering – and a more confident feel from a vehicle that conveys strength through exceptional solidity.

“With the stronger body structure and more than a decade of V-Series production models and the CTS-V racing program experience – engineers tuned the CTS-V to deliver greater body motion control for a more agile feel, while maintaining excel-lent ride quality,” said David Leone, Cadillac executive chief engineer. “The result is class-leading capability on the highway or track, balanced with luxury and refine-ment.”



Track-honed chassis and suspension The CTS-V shares the same 114.6-inch (2,910 mm) wheelbase as the CTS non-V-Se-ries models, but has wider front and rear footprints that enhance grip, reduce body motion and contribute to more direct-feeling steering.

Nineteen-inch wheels wrapped with specially developed Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires give the CTS-Vits footprint and enable nearly 1g in lateral acceleration. The lightweight, forged aluminum wheels – measuring 9.5 inches wide in the front and 10 inches wide in the rear – are constructed of a low-mass forging that helps reduce un-sprung weight for greater agility and a more direct feel to steering inputs.

The wheels are 45-percent stiffer than previous CTS-V wheels, while the Michelin tires feature a tri-compound tread that delivers excellent grip in performance driv-ing situations, while offering excellent ride quality characteristics and extended tread wear.



Additional contributors to the CTS-V’s responsive, connected and track-capable driving experience include:

• A revised multi-link double-pivot MacPherson-strut front suspension delivers a quicker response and increased lateral control, incorporating “hydro” bush-ings, where traditional elastomeric bushings are replaced with zero-compliance cross-axis ball joints, higher-rate springs and a stiffer stabilizer bar – for 20-per-cent greater roll stiffness

• The ZF Steering Systems Servotronic II variable-ratio electric power steering gear, with 14-percent greater system stiffness for an improved feeling of precision and greater driver feedback

• Cadillac’s five-link rear suspension features reduced roll center migration, stron-ger lateral control and effective anti-squat geometry, complementing the front suspension with greater body motion control. Contributing components include stiffer bushings, new cradle mounts, higher-rate springs and a stiffer stabilizer bar

• A standard electronic limited-slip differential supports optimal traction and en-ables maximum corner exit acceleration

• Larger prop shafts and greater half-shaft asymmetry (stiffer driver’s side shaft) mitigate power hop during acceleration

• A Brembo brake system provides durability, consistency and the capability for track-day performance. The system includes two-piece 15.3-inch-diameter (390 mm) front rotors with staggered six-piston calipers and 14.3-inch-diamter (365 mm) rear rotors with four-piston calipers.



Also, the CTS-V features third-generation Magnetic Ride Control and Performance Traction Management. Four driver-selectable settings – Tour, Sport, Track and Snow electronically calibrate performance variables to optimize the car for driving condi-tions. Performance Traction Management is offered in Track mode and features five settings of torque reduction and brake intervention for track driving.

Magnetic Ride Control “reads” the road a thousand times per second, sending data to magneto-rheological fluid-filled dampers that can independently control the damping characteristics of all four dampers. Third-generation improvements enable 40-percent faster damping response. At 60 mph, the third-generation magnetic ride control system calculates the optimal damping force for every inch of the road.Functional form

• A lightweight carbon fiber hood featuring an air-extracting vent that pulls hot air out of the engine compartment and helps reduce lift at speed by channeling air pulled through the radiator out and over the top of car rather than allowing trapped air to exit under the car

• Unique front and rear fascias provide optimal aero performance, with larger grille openings in the front fascia to feed more air to the supercharged engine. Even the mesh pattern of the signature grille openings is enlarged to allow more air into the radiator and multiple heat exchangers

• A front splitter enhances handling by forcing air to push down on the front of the car rather than flow under it, where it can cause lift

• Wider fenders to accommodate the wide, 19-inch wheels and Michelin Pilot Su-per Sport tires

An available Carbon Fiber package takes aero performance and mass optimization to higher levels. The Carbon Fiber package includes a more aggressive front splitter, hood vent, rear diffuser and spoiler.

“V-Series is the emotive core of Cadillac and the apex of the brand’s Art and Science design philosophy,” said Andrew Smith, executive director, Cadillac Global Design.

“The CTS-V reflects that with a bold sense of arrival, serious performance, seamless integration of technology and precision in its craftsmanship. The exposed carbon fiber components, for example, are book-matched on the centerline for a more pre-cise, tailored appearance.”

Performance-focused cabinThe CTS-V’s dual-purpose capability carries over to the interior, where the design and relationship of key components are focused expressly on performance-driving ergonomics.

“With the performance the new CTS-V is capable of delivering, the interior needs to be as functional as the other vehicle systems,” said Smith. “All of the contact points – the steering wheel, seats, shifter and pedals – are designed to make performance driving experiences direct and intuitive.”

The CTS-V features standard 20-way performance-oriented heated and ventilated front seats trimmed in semi-aniline leather, with sueded microfiber inserts and seat-backs.

Available RECARO performance front seats deliver aggressive, adjustable bolsters that help hold the driver and front passenger in place during high-load cornering. They also have a luxury-performance feel, trimmed in Mulan leather with sueded microfiber inserts and seatbacks.

Additional features include Cadillac’s cut-and-sew elements, with decorative stitch-ing and authentic materials such as available sueded steering wheel and shift knob. Three color combinations are offered:

Jet Black, Jet Black with Light Platinum accents and Saffron with Jet Black accents.



The CTS-V features a unique version of the 12.3-inch instrument panel cluster dis-play, with V-Series graphics and distinctive gauge readouts and complementing full-color, reconfigurable head-up display. It is also equipped with the latest connec-tivity technologies from Cadillac:

• Navigation with Bose Surround Sound audio

New exterior design highlightsRebel features an all-new grille with prominent billet silver “RAM” letter badge. Departing from the brand’s iconic “cross-hair” designs, the blacked-out Rebel grille tops a completely new black off-road front bumper design with a durable pow-der-coated surface, which incorporates a powder coated, billet silver skid plate, new front tow hooks and new LED fog lamps. Black bezel bi-functional projector head-lamps with LED marker lights lie beneath an aluminum, twin-snorkel sport hood.



Rebel’s blacked-out front-end continues on the flanks, where black Power Wagon wheel-arch moldings, flat-black badge, mirrors and lower body panels create a dis-tinctive trail-ready presence. The new trim features a two-tone paint scheme with black as a constant on the lower body, front to rear.

The Ram 1500 Rebel features an all-new 17-inch aluminum wheel. Among the most elaborate designs found in mass production, the new one-piece wheel incorporates matte black painted accent pockets and multi-angled surfaces linked to the Rebel’s off-road bias.

Unique interior detailingInside, Rebel is every bit as brawny and rugged as it is outside, featuring dramatic, indus-try-exclusive seating elements.

A new tire offering for Ram trucks, the Open Country A/Ts are versatile all-terrain tires designed for rugged good looks, all-season handling and a comfortable ride. Their aggressive tread pattern offers good traction in bad conditions, on pavement or off. They feature a special wavy sipe arrangement for a comfortable ride and im-proved snow traction; groove bottom siping for more biting edges for increased trac-tion in the snow and an open shoulder that maximizes water evacuation for excel-lent all-terrain traction and stability.

The Rebel takes advantage of Ram’s exclusive air suspension system with a 1.0-inch factory suspension lift, which not only helps to clear the 33-inch tires but also con-tributes to additional ground clearance. A modified alignment of the independent front suspension appropriately adjusts tire angle and aluminum lower A-arms ab-sorb the load. The combination of larger tires and a suspension lift yield best-in-class ground clearance of 10.3 inches, and a new stability program calibration takes Reb-el’s modifications into consideration.

Rebel is available exclusively as a crew cab model with 5-ft. 7-inch bed length. Both 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter HEMI powertrains are offered, as is a choice of either 4X2 (HEMI only) or 4X4 configurations. RamBox is optional.

PowertrainThe 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine (Ward’s 10 Best Engines Award winner three years in a row) with variable-valve timing (VVT) offers 305 horsepower, 269 lb.-ft. of torque and best-in-class gasoline fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon (mpg).The legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 with fuel-saving cylinder shut-off and VVT pro-vide 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque.

HEMI-powered Ram 1500 Rebel trucks are available in 4×2 or 4×4 powertrains with 3.92 or 3.21 gear ratios. When equipped with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, Reb-el is available in 4×4 only with a 3.92 gear ratio, allowing the engine to leverage its power and torque.

Both the 3.6-liter V-6 and 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engines are available with a rear an-ti-spin differential, which turns both rear wheels in tandem when increased torque is applied – helpful in off-road driving conditions. The design automatically un-locks the differential for normal on-road driving, allowing the wheels to spin inde-pendently for improved drivability.

The powertrain-limited warranty covers the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair a covered powertrain component – engine, transmission and drive system. Coverage also includes free towing to the nearest Ram dealer, if necessary. The warranty also is transferable, allowing customers who sell their truck during the warranty period to pass the coverage onto the new owner.



The standard three-year / 36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty provides bumper-to-bumper coverage for the Ram 1500, from the body to the electrical system.

QualityThe 2015 Ram 1500’s quality is scrutinized at the company’s Chrysler Technology Center’s state-of-the-art scientific labs in Auburn Hills, Michigan, including the Noise/Vibration/Harshness Lab, Electromagnetic Compatibility Facility, Wind Tun-nel and the Road Test Simulator (RTS). For example, the RTS recreates the abuse a truck endures at the hands of a 95th percentile driver – meaning someone who drives the vehicle in more severe conditions than 95 percent of all customers. The RTS can put a lifetime of wear and tear on a truck in about one month’s time. The Ram development team is committed to finding and fixing any issues before the cus-tomer does.

Up to 128 pounds lighter thanks to AMG Lightweight PerformanceThe S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest model to benefit from the systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy. Lightweight con-struction has reduced the vehicle weight by up to 128 pounds – even though the car has a higher output and more extensive standard equipment than the preceding model. This weight savings was achieved largely thanks to the use of a lightweight lithium-ion battery, optional AMG forged light-alloy wheels and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance composite braking system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin and the front end of the body are made of aluminium. The reduced weight im-proves driving dynamics and cuts fuel consumption, while the low power-to-weight ratio results in impressive performance: the S63 AMG Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 3.9 seconds and goes on to reach a top speed of 186 mph (electronically limited).



In terms of maximum output, torque and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains one of the most efficient series-produced V8 engines of all. With an output of 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, the AMG eight- cylinder unit meets even the most demanding of requirements. Compared to the previous CL63 AMG model, engine output has been increased by 41 hp and torque by 74 lb-ft. Yet the S63 AMG Coupe still consumes less fuel.

Maximum agility and exciting dynamics are the two key strengths of this transmission, which is used exclusively at AMG. Drivers can con-figure their own personal set-up, depending on their driving style. There are three modes to choose from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual). Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel driveFor the first time, the S63 AMG Coupe comes standard in the U.S. market with the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. With permanent all- wheel drive, 33 percent of the engine torque is sent to the front axle and 67 percent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. Systematic lightweight construction: Available AMG forged wheelsThe S63 AMG Coupe is available with optional AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while at the same time increasing strength. The lower un-sprung masses result in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response.

Optional wheels include 10-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey with a polished finish – 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires respectively. The forged wheels feature a high-quality, screwable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged aluminium. Its shape is remi-niscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG logo is integrated into one of the ten spokes. These forged wheels are also available painted in matte black with a high-sheen rim flange.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system as an option for the first timeShort stopping distances and rapid deceleration are a given for the S63 AMG Coupe, which is equipped with a weight-optimized, fade-resistant AMG high- performance composite brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake sys-tem is available as an option. This design, which is more than 20 percent lighter, ensures lower unsprung masses and enhanced braking performance.



Design: AMG combines sensual purity with breaktaking performanceThe S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe also boasts exciting looks to emphasize its sporty performance: it exudes power and hallmark Mercedes-Benz sensual purity. The de-sign is a stage for the exciting technology at the heart of the new dream car. Numer-ous aerodynamic elements underline the outstanding driving dynamics:

the front end is dominated by the three-dimensional AMG “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver shadow (a matte silver finish). Whether in motion or stationary, dis-tinctive AMG lettering between the twin-blade lamellas leaves no doubt: this is a high-performance model from Affalterbach. The A-wing is located below the radi-ator grille. This three-dimensional air-ducting element is painted in the body col-or, spans the entire width of the front apron and displays the stylized “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles. Large, black flics surround the outer cooling air intakes. Down below, the front splitter in silver shadow optimizes the flow of air to the cool-ing modules. This design feature, which is a familiar sight in motorsport, also reduc-es front-axle lift and enhances the vehicle’s aerodynamic balance.

All of the cooling air grilles exude high quality with their high-gloss-black paint finish. Keeping the A-wing and front splitter separate makes the car appear closer to the road. A similar effect is created by the AMG side sill panels with their high-qual-ity, three-dimensional inserts in silver shadow. Together with the lower feature line, these inserts make the S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe exude energy even when it is at a standstill. At the rear, the diffuser insert in high-gloss black also catches the eye right away. The lower trim element in silver shadow is reminiscent of the A-wing at the front and provides an effective contrast. The two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sport exhaust system with sport flaps are perfectly integrated into the diffuser insert. Styl-ized, vertical air outlets in the rear apron assume the role of a defined spoiler lip and optimize aerodynamics. The “S 63 AMG” model designation in a new, contemporary typography below the tail lamps adds the perfect finishing touch to the rear-end de-sign.

Interior: Captivating luxury, quality and exclusivityOpening the door reveals the luxurious interior of the S63 AMG Coupe: the instru-ment panel almost seamlessly transitions into the doors in a wraparound design. High-quality materials and fine workmanship are combined with a sporty and ex-clusive design idiom. The newly developed AMG sport seats with power adjustment, memory function and seat heating/ventilation offer the driver and front passenger optimum lateral support. Fine AMG design Nappa leather with piping together with AMG badges on all four seat backrests and an embossed AMG emblem on the arm-rest of the front center console create an exquisite atmosphere.



The new three-spoke AMG sport steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim and perforated leather in the grip area allows perfect vehicle control. There is an AMG logo in the lower metal insert, and new aluminum shift paddles shorten the reaction time when changing gears to enhance performance. Another feature dis-playing the hallmark AMG look is the high-resolution TFT color AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials. In addition to the specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG start-up display, the AMG logo in the speedometer 200 mph scale and the “V8 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter.

The new, innovative touchpad, included as standard equipment, makes it significant-ly easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation system. The safety and assis-tance systems are the same as those for the S550 4MATIC Coupe.

“The Q60 Concept is Infiniti’s most emotional and accessible concept so far,” said Francois Bancon, Infiniti Vice President, Product Strategy. “This concept goes be-yond a flight-of-fancy design exercise; it is the next proof point in Infiniti’s con-cept-to-production approach. Come next year, Infiniti will produce a sports coupe with influences from the Q60 Concept.”

The two-door fastback is concept vehicle for which Infiniti has a firm and clear in-tent for production. Similarly, the Q30 Concept, which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show about 15 months ago, is also planned to go into production this year.

The breathtaking Q80 Inspiration was premiered last year at the Paris Motor Show in September 2014.

Infiniti continues to broaden its lineup to cover the spectrum from smaller premium vehicles, namely the Q30, to full-size cars such as the Q70L. The seductive Q60 Con-cept reflects Infiniti’s intention to strengthen its offerings in the mid-size segment and to cement its credentials as a premium brand driven by performance.

Progressive design, inside and outInfiniti designers set out to create a sports car with a powerful road presence to match its top-notch performance. And the result is immediately obvious from the precise lines, sharp edges, striking dips in the body sides – all of which come togeth-er to give the Q60 Concept a formidable stance on the road.



Hunkering down at 4,690 mm (184.6 inches) long, 1,865 mm (73.4 inches) wide and 1,370 mm (53.9 inches) high, the two-door concept is as sporty in motion as it is at rest, with coupe-style exterior lines that stoke desire and aspiration.

The character lines running the length of the car from the double arch grille to the aerodynamic tail spoiler gives the vehicle its assertive look from front to rear. On the sides, the shoulder dips in with such a striking depth that it amplifies the visual ex-citement of the cabin.

The designers also emphasized the wheels to give the Q60 Concept an athletic pro-file. Donning arresting spokes in matte blacks and high-gloss black chromes, the deep 21-inch wheels fill up the wheel arches and give the concept its domineering stance.

The same refinement on the outside extends into the smallest detail on the inside, evoking a premium atmosphere with three-dimensional textures and meticulous craftsmanship.



Stitched by hand, the leather-wrapped instrument panel, steering wheel and door inserts all bear testament to bespoke finesse. Carbon fiber in the door accents also echoes the performance of the car. High-quality driver-oriented controls intuitively build driver confidence.

The seats have also been designed to complement the car’s character. An array of leathers was used to bring out the best comfort, from premium saddle leather to thick cushion quilting. Even oft-ignored rear passengers get stylish bucket seats, adding to the premium environment in the car.



Audacious performanceThe Q60 Concept is expected to deliver exceptional performance befitting a true-blue sports car from the next-generation 3.0-litre V6 engine with direct injection and twin-turbocharging.

This all-new engine was first previewed in the Q80 Inspiration during the Paris Mo-tor Show and will be part of a new family of lighter, smaller, more efficient and more powerful engines.

Slated to be introduced within the next two years, this new line of engines signifi-cantly reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions while boosting pow-er and torque for a more thrilling drive.

The Q60 Concept also showcases a host of ingenious technologies to not only enrich the driving experience but also provide an intuitive level of driving assistance where required. This is in line with Infiniti’s philosophy that technology should enhance the driver, not restrict them.



For example, the enhanced Infiniti Direct Adaptive Steering system allows indepen-dent control of the car’s tire angle and steering inputs, transmitting the driver’s in-tentions to the wheels faster than a mechanical system.

This increases the direct driving performance feel by quickly and intelligently com-municating road surface feedback to the driver. Developed after more than 10 years of research, the system was a world’s first when it premiered on the Q50.

Apart from augmenting the driving experience, the Q60 Concept puts the spotlight back on the desires and needs of the driver and passengers through human-centric systems that provide a higher degree of available personalization.

This is made possible with the new Infiniti InTuition system, a fully customizable digital environment, which works with the vehicle’s advanced Intelligent Keys to rec-ognize the vehicle settings for up to four different drivers, including preferences for driving position, heating and cooling, audio, navigation, telematics.175 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM

Sitting at 4,690 mm (184.6 inches) long, 1,865 mm (73.4 inches) wide and 1,370 mm (53.9 inches) high, the Q60 Concept features razor-sharp edges and strikingly deep recesses, which result in the coupe appearing lower than it really is.

The angular exterior offers glimpses of Formula One car design, and the pampering interior delivers a premium experience with an array of handmade leather finishes, Alcantara® and carbon fiber.

“With the Infiniti Q60 Concept, we continue to take the artistry of coach building onto the road. Powerful and intense, the car looks like it’s been crafted by hand. It’s seductive and attainable,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director.

In many ways, the Q60 Concept is a progressive culmination and evolution of the Q80 Inspiration and Q50 Eau Rouge, both of which premiered globally last year. Design cues from both vehicles found their way onto the Q60 Concept, taking them one step closer to production reality. The Q60 Concept took after Q80 Inspiration’s audaciously low roofline, intelligent headlamps and quilted leather seats while inher-iting the gill on the lower front fender and Formula One-inspired lower intake from Q50 Eau Rouge.



“The Q60 Concept has the emotion and sculpting of the Q80 Inspiration. At the same time, it adopts the performance aspects of the Q50 Eau Rouge, which is imme-diately associated with Infiniti performance and the science and sport of Formula One racing,” explained Albaisa.

Signature Infiniti faceThe Q60 Concept’s sleek and aerodynamic design is anchored by its deep double arch grille, whose elaborate waved mesh pattern gives it a three-dimensional quality.

From the grille, the flowing character lines rise and merge into the headlamps, draw-ing attention to the intelligent LED lights. These adaptive headlamps react to the steering, speed and elevation of the car and automatically adjust the beam around each bend to illuminate the road ahead.

Inspired by the human eye – characteristic of Infiniti’s vehicles – the headlamp has very fine fiber optic-like lines branching out from the projector. When lit, these filaments of LED lights look like lines of the iris radiating from the pupil, giving the headlamps a high-tech stare.

“We use these lyrical gestures to put warmth back into science and to make technol-ogy human-centric,” said Albaisa.

Moving forward, Infiniti is also putting its stamp on future models with creative de-sign flourishes. In the Q60 Concept, it is the little crest at the centre edge of the hood that echoes the peak of the Infiniti logo. The line across the hood, the crease on each side and the lower bars all come together to highlight the link between the Infiniti brand and the front fascia.



Highly defined body contoursThe gentle slope of the roofline may give the Infiniti Q60 Concept its slippery coupe silhouette, but it is the character line running the length of the car from the distinc-tive grille to the pronounced tail spoiler that gives the concept its assertive look from front to rear. By splitting the profile, this line not only makes the car look lean and slender but also visually strengthens the car’s stance to match its throbbing high-per-formance heart.

The highly defined body contours are executed with precision, and where the shoul-der dips in with exaggerated depth is reminiscent of chiseled cheekbones or rippling muscles. An additional crease around the window opening further increase move-ment towards the rear while accentuating the hallmark crescent-cut C-pillars, which have been reinterpreted to elongate the flow of the sloping roof. The flow of the lines and the tight closing seams between panels and doors further augment the perceived quality of the coupe.179 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


Wearing a special colour named Arctic Aluminum, the Q60 Concept looks like it is machined from a solid aluminum block rather than painted. The new coating gleams like liquid metal and stretches around the body like a metallic skin, giving the im-pression that the coupe is a solid piece of liquid aluminum slicing through air, un-derlining its high-performance appeal.

To give the Q60 Concept a planted look that conveys empowerment and being in control, the Infiniti designers made the wheels more visible than the body.

“We carefully studied the area of the tire versus the area of the body in the side view, and we concluded to make the wheels more dominant. We’ll definitely see more of this in future Infiniti models,” said Albaisa.

Occupying pride of place, the newly designed 21-inch wheels fill up the wheel arches. Painted in a mix of matte blacks and high-gloss black chromes, the impres-sive spokes are inspired by jet turbine blades and stretch to the edge of the wheel, sending out a message that the Q60 Concept means serious business.



Integrated aerodynamicsIn the rear, the side character lines smoothly merge with the shape of the rear LED combination lights. Sporting the same fiber optics LED cues, the tail lamps look more three-dimensional than ever. Not only do the lamps act as design elements connecting the side and the rear, but they also accentuate the Q60 Concept’s wide stance and wheel arches, which are sliced and flushed against the body.

The fully integrated top spoiler adds to the dynamic view from behind. It starts where the roof tapers off and flicks up in a duck tail for improved aerodynamics.In a nod to its Q50 Eau Rouge roots, the concept gets large dual exhaust outlets with chrome finishers, which are integrated as part of an airfoil.

Premium comfortThe inside of the Infiniti Q60 Concept has been designed to match with the sport-iness outside, offering a powerful blend of three-dimensional textures, meticulous craftsmanship and the highest quality.

While the familiar asymmetry from the top of the centre cluster to the wide centre console has been updated to make it more fluid, the centre console continues to de-marcate the driver and passenger zone.



The exquisite hand stitching on the leather-wrapped instrument panel and door in-serts embodies Infiniti’s quest for perfection. The two-tone black-and-white instru-ment panel adds contrast to the interior, reflecting Infiniti’s attention to detail.

Infiniti designers used carbon fiber in the door accents to complement the perfor-mance of the car. Similarly, the double hand-stitched leather-covered steering wheel hints at the prowess beneath the hood.

The seats have also been designed to go with the car’s exhilarating character. An ar-ray of leathers was used to bring out the best comfort, from premium saddle leather to thick cushion quilting. Bolsters were added to the sides for additional support.

In a segment where rear seats are regularly ignored design-wise, Infiniti has done the opposite and given rear passengers sporty bucket seats. This adds to the holistic premium environment in the Q60 Concept.

“When you open the door of the Q60 Concept, you can feel that the rockers are solid and the car is not to be messed with,” said Albaisa. “And when you sit in the car, you can sense the artistry and tailoring wherever you look or touch.”

Volvo Cars today reinforced its product offensive in the US by unveiling two new sedans at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, moving it a sig-nificant step closer towards its medium term goal of selling 100,000 cars a year in the US.

The Volvo S60 Inscription and the Volvo S60 Cross Country will boost Volvo’s pres-ence in the important premium sedan market. Volvo is also introducing the all new XC90 R Design in Detroit, the latest version of its seven seat SUV that was launched in the US in Los Angeles.



“These two new products, added to the all-new XC90 unveiled in LA, are a further statement of our commitment to turn around our performance in the US. Over-all, we will launch seven new products in the US by 2018,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Volvo Cars. The introduction of these new models forms the latest chapter in Volvo’s ongoing transformation, which involves the creation of a global industrial footprint, the com-plete renewal of Volvo’s product range over the next five years, the introduction of a new modular chassis technology, world-first safety technologies, a new design lan-guage, a new powertrain architecture and a range of class-leading connectivity ser-vices.

The pace and depth of this transformation was underlined earlier this month after the company reported record full-year sales for 2014. Sales increased 8.9 per cent in 2014 to a new record of 465,866 cars sold. December 2014 also marked the 18th month of consecutive sales increases. Volvo Cars forecasts sales will continue to ex-pand in all global markets in 2015.



The S60 InscriptionThe new Volvo S60 Inscription will offer class-leading rear space, something consis-tently requested by US customers.

It will be made at Volvo’s plant in Chengdu, China, and is on show for the first time at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Chengdu is Volvo’s main production facility in China and has been built in accor-dance with globally monitored quality standards such as the Volvo Cars Manufac-turing System, which ensures Volvo Cars’ global quality engineering, quality audit and quality assurance standards.

Levels of installed technology and equipment are the same as the company’s Europe-an facilities, as are the working environment, safety and environmental performance standards. Exports to the US will start in the second quarter of this year.

Chevrolet today made a significant statement on its commitment to electrification with the introduction of the Bolt EV concept – a vision for an affordable, long-range all-electric vehicle designed to offer more than 200 miles of range starting around $30,000.

“The Bolt EV concept is a game-changing electric vehicle designed for attainability, not exclusivity,” said General Motors CEO Mary Barra. “Chevrolet believes electrifi-cation is a pillar of future transportation and needs to be affordable for a wider seg-ment of customers.”



Leveraging the electrification prowess established by Volt and Spark EV, the Bolt EV concept is designed to offer long-range performance in all 50 states and many global markets.

Drivers will be able to select operating modes designed around preferred driving styles such as daily commuting and spirited weekend cruising, for uncompromising electric driving. The modes adjust accelerator pedal mapping, vehicle ride height and suspension tuning. The Bolt EV concept is also designed to support DC fast charging.

“We have made tremendous strides in technologies that make it easier and more affordable for Chevrolet customers to integrate an all-electric vehicle in their daily lives,” said Barra. “The Bolt EV concept demonstrates General Motors’ commitment to electrification and the capabilities of our advanced EV technology.”



The Bolt EV concept also pushes the envelope for crossover aesthetics. Its unique proportion, with practically no front or rear overhang, makes the most of interior space and was designed to create a roomy environment for four that feels expansive. Lightweight materials, including aluminum, magnesium, carbon fiber and even wo-ven mesh, complement the design, while driving down the curb weight to help max-imize range. Aero-optimizing features such as vented rear fenders also help contrib-ute to range.

“Form and function have never meshed so well together,” said Ed Welburn, vice president, GM Global Design. “No compromises were made when it came to aes-thetics and the elements that contribute to the Bolt EV concept’s range, resulting in a unique proportion that’s sleek, efficient and obviously a Chevrolet.”

The Bolt EV concept’s airy interior ambience is enhanced with bold use of glass all around – as well as a full-length, frosted glass roof with unique, faceted design ele-ments. A high beltline sweeps upward with the D-pillar, culminating in an integrat-ed roof spoiler, for a lean, athletic stance. An advanced nano-composite rear hatch and wraparound rear window give the Bolt EV concept a distinctive appearance and flood the interior with more natural light.



High-intensity, efficient light-emitting diode (LED) headlamp and taillamp elements are housed behind jewel-like faceted lenses in which translucent elements illuminate evenly to create the signature lighting effect.

Airy, intuitive interiorInside, the Bolt EV concept has a large feel reinforced by generous headroom and legroom dimensions. A flat, flow-through floor adds to the roominess, while a con-temporary, light color scheme adds to the feeling of an open, airy cabin and conveys warmth.

The cabin’s airy, high-tech environment is reinforced with lightweight, slim-architec-ture seats mounted on exposed aluminum pedestals that create a floating effect. The minimalist center console “floats,” too, suspended from the front seats.

“The Bolt EV concept’s interior is intended as a sanctuary, with materials and tech-nologies that reinforce the airy ambience and help contribute to the vehicle’s overall efficiency,” said Welburn. “It also incorporates technology in a subtler and simpler manner, for a more soothing driving experience – particularly in busy, urban envi-ronments.”



Chevrolet’s signature dual-cockpit interior layout incorporates easy-to-use technol-ogy designed to make the driving experience easier and more enjoyable. It wraps into the door panels and features a frosted and translucent appearance – and a subtle glow at night.

The concept’s technological intuitiveness can be accessed via a smartphone with the concept Bolt EV Connect app, which is designed to:

• Allow a smartphone to perform as the key fob

• Allow ride-sharing management, including reservations, vehicle location, digital key and even payment processing via the smartphone

• Incorporate the concept automatic park-and-retrieval technology, which enables the driver to exit the vehicle and tell the Bolt EV concept to park itself – and when errands are completed, the Bolt EV concept can be summoned to return to the owner’s location.

A large, color 10-inch-diagonal capacitive-touch screen, with interface features, complements the concept Bolt EV Connect app. It even allows the projection of all the application and other smartphone data onto the screen.

Avenir’s signature sweep-spear body side motif and nod to the “boat-tail” styling of the 1971-73 Riviera are modern interpretations of classic Buick cues proposed by GM Australia’s Lead Exterior Designer, Warrack Leach, who said it was easy to be inspired when working on such an iconic brand.

“When you receive a brief titled ‘Buick Flagship’ you immediately think of a vehicle with impressive road presence, a confident yet graceful stance, emotive and progres-sive form language, but above all else, a beautiful automobile,” Mr Leach said.

“It has been incredibly exciting to be part of this passionate global team, and we are immensely proud of what we have achieved. To be given the opportunity to present a show car at Detroit, one of the biggest automotive stages in the world, is the ulti-mate compliment.”

Construction of the concept took place at GM Australia’s Fabrication Studio. The team overcame the time zone challenge with precise communications and in-house craftsmanship.



Paul Clarke, Manager for Creative Hard Modelling, was responsible for managing the build and described the talent in his team as simply outstanding. “This project has been particularly special as it is the first time the team here in Australia have built a Buick concept for an International motor show. To have a concept on display in Detroit is very exciting and a great thing for Australian design,” Mr Clarke said.

Michael Simcoe summarised: “simply put, Avenir is a beautiful piece of sculpture, delivered on a premium proportion that acknowledges the Buick design heritage in a very progressive way. It has been a wonderful opportunity for all involved and we are sure the result will take your breath away”.

DESIGN OVERVIEW

The most striking departure from contemporary Buick models is a new grille design that puts a new face on the brand. It features a large opening accented by a return to the three-color – red, silver and blue – Buick tri-shield insignia, accented by wing-shaped elements. The grille is flanked by bold headlamps featuring full LED lighting.

The new grille is a modern interpretation of a design introduced on the landmark 1954 Wildcat II concept, which shattered expectations of what a Buick was supposed to be. On Avenir, it represents progressiveness in technology and a break from con-vention.

Sculptural surfaces, taught lines, short overhangs and a broad-shouldered stance stretches 5,195mm in length and 1,931mm in width. Its reimagined sweep-spear element complements the long body lines and conveys a sense of motion, as does tapered rear-end styling.

Its length enables exceptional spaciousness inside, but just as importantly, a presence that speaks to luxury and the importance of style. In short, it’s the befitting propor-tion for a Buick flagship.



Avenir’s sophisticated colour palette, including a Crystalline exterior colour and measured use of bright work, accent the Avenir’s body lines and sets up the interior for a combination that takes Buick’s contemporary style to a higher level.

InteriorAvenir’s four-place interior includes deco trim, premium leather and ambient light-ing to create an environment that is inviting and comfortable.

Inspired by nature and sea waves receding on a beach, the interior flows seamless-ly through the cabin featuring a three-dimensional motif on the seats and carried through in other components including the clear transparent décor that reveals the intriguing, sculptural wave motif beneath the surface. A colour palette of light and natural tones blended with rich, premium materials such as oiled and buffed wood trim, and Galvano satin-chrome accents, enhance Avenir’s ambience.

In 1965, Ford and Carroll Shelby developed a road-racing version of the popular Ford Mustang – the Shelby GT350 Competition model. Lighter, more powerful and with a highly developed suspension, it is one of the most iconic racing Mustangs ever produced.

Arriving later this year, the new Shelby GT350R has been designed and engineered in the same spirit, delivering never-before-seen track capability from a Mustang – thanks to innovations in aerodynamics, chassis engineering and light-weighting.

The car features the first-ever production V8 from Ford with a flat-plane crankshaft the most powerful naturally aspirated engine Ford has ever produced plus a specially tuned suspension.



It is fitted with revised spring rates and antiroll bars, lower ride height, unique track-tuned alignment settings, revised bushings and jounce bumpers, cross-axis ball joints in the front suspension, and revised calibration controlling the MagneRide dampers.

“The Shelby GT350R Mustang is a car with the nimbleness and power delivery you want on a road course,” said Nair. “This isn’t just about horsepower. The Shelby GT350R is an all-around balanced athlete – one that is extraordinarily precise and agile.”

Track technology for the streetLightweight carbon fiber wheels are standard on Shelby GT350R, making Ford the first major automaker to introduce this innovative wheel technology as standard equipment.

Carbon fiber wheels have been offered on only a handful of exotic supercars and will benefit Shelby GT350R performance by shaving critical unsprung weight and reducing rolling inertia. The 19×11-inch front and 19×11.5-inch rear wheels provide approximately 13 pounds of unsprung weight reduction per wheel and offer higher levels of stiffness than equivalent aluminum wheels.



The lightweight wheels will be shod in Michelin’s top-shelf Pilot Sport Cup 2 high-performance tires with rubber compound and a construction unique to Shel-by GT350R. This combination of incredibly stiff and light wheels with bespoke tires offers customers exceptional steering feel and levels of performance.

Weight reduction in pursuit of performanceFord engineers delivered against aggressive targets for weight reduction on the Shel-by GT350R. If a part did not make the car faster around a road course, it was consid-ered for deletion.

Items removed include air conditioning, the stereo system, rear seats, trunk floor-board and carpet, backup camera and emergency tire sealer and inflator. Exhaust resonators also have been removed for weight savings with the benefit of creating a sharper exhaust tone.

Shelby GT350R is more than 130 pounds lighter than the Shelby GT350 Track Pack model, which has proven its durability in multiple 24-hour racetrack tests.



For customers seeking more comfort in their Shelby GT350R, Ford is offering an optional Electronics Package. Included is dual-zone air conditioning, 8-inch touch screen with navigation, seven-speaker audio system, turn signal mirrors and more.

Aggressive aerodynamicsShelby GT350R has been optimized for aerodynamic excellence. Details including the hood vent for heat extraction and lift reduction, underbody belly pans front and rear, an aggressive diffuser, vented wheel wells and turbulence-reducing fender vents, wheel air curtains and side skirts all remain on Shelby GT350R, but the car’s downforce capability has been increased.

Revisions to the front splitter maximize downforce, while an all-new high-efficien-cy carbon fiber rear wing has been added in anticipation of competition. World-class powertrainThe new 5.2-liter dual-overhead-cam V8 engine is the first-ever production V8 from Ford with a flat-plane crankshaft – an architecture typically found only in racing applications or exotic European sports cars.

Unlike traditional V8s, where the connecting rods are attached to the crankshaft at 90-degree intervals, this design evenly spaces all crank pins at 180-degree intervals to optimize high-speed engine breathing. It is the most powerful naturally aspirated production Ford engine ever, with more than 500 horsepower and more than 400 lb.-ft. of torque.

An air-to-oil engine oil cooler typically found only on race cars maintains engine temperatures under the most severe conditions, as does a standard cooler for the six-speed manual transmission.



A Ford-tuned limited-slip Torsen differential with 3.73 axle ratio is optimized for cornering grip and straight-line traction, while an electronically modulated rear-mounted air-to-oil differential cooler maintains ideal temperatures during track driving.

Dedicated R design detailsAside from carbon fiber wheels, larger front splitter and rear wing, Shelby GT350R features distinct design details. Exterior touches include red painted brake calipers, red pin striping at the edges of the optional over-the-top racing stripes and Shelby GT350R badging. Inside is high-contrast red stitching, Shelby GT350R badging and the D-shaped steering wheel fitted with a red center mark at the top.

New breed of performanceThe limited-production Shelby GT350R will be available in the United States and Canada later this year, and is one of more than 12 new Ford Performance vehicles coming by 2020.

“This is the pinnacle of performance Mustangs today,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Performance. “The Shelby GT350R Mustang lays the groundwork for a story that will play out for years to come on the track and the street.”



Forerunner of a mobility revolution

The new research vehicle F 015 Luxury in Motion has its world premiere at the Consumer Electronics Show, and provides a concrete example of the visionary ideas the company is developing with regard to autonomous driving of the future. With this self-driving luxury sedan Mercedes-Benz illustrates how the car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a private retreating space. This new way of traveling gives passengers the freedom to use their valuable time on the road in manifold ways.

Progressing from the self-propelled (“automotive”) to the self-reliant (“autono-mous”) vehicle, Mercedes-Benz as a pioneer goes far beyond the purely technical realization of automated driving. The company’s experts also have to anticipate different outlooks and social trends. People are always at the center of such consid-erations. Just as the 1886 Benz Patent Motor Car and its successors revolutionized personal mobility and, as a consequence, society as a whole, the first self-driving cars will also bring about major changes. “Anyone who focuses solely on the technolo-gy has not yet grasped how autonomous driving will change our society. The car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space,” explains Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Manage-ment of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.



Expressive forerunner of a mobility revolutionWith the huge amount of space in its lounge-like interior, the Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion takes the concepts of comfort and luxury to a new level. Every facet of the vehicle reflects perfectly the Mercedes way of interpreting the terms “modern luxury”, emotion and intelligence. This innovative four-seater is a fore-runner of a mobility revolution, and this is immediately apparent from its futuristic appearance.

It is obvious that the F 015 represents the vision of a brand new vehicle concept just from its unusual proportions (length/width/height: 5220/2018/1524 millimeters), its seamless, monolithic exterior and its large LED light modules at the front and rear. A range of different lighting functions can be provided through these LED fields. At the same time, the vehicle communicates and interacts with the outside world by means of the LED fields. These LED fields show for example, if the F 015 is driving autonomously (blue) or is controlled manually (white).

The low-slung front end, smooth and streamlined roof line, flat front windshield and road-hugging rear end give the F 015 Luxury in Motion an extended and decidedly dynamic silhouette. The F 015 Luxury in Motion’s unusually large wheelbase of 3610 millimeters in combination with its short overhangs clearly show that the design focus was on providing the maximum possible space for the passengers.249 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


A lounge-like interior with an atmosphere of wellbeingIn the interior of the F 015 Luxury in Motion the designers have created a lounge-like space with a feel-good ambience characterized by elegance, quality and light-ness. Sensual, flowing transitions and warm, organic materials such as open-pore walnut wood shaped into a three-dimensional veneer, and extremely soft ice white nappa leather contrast with clearly-defined metal and glass surfaces with a cool and technical feel.

The pivotal feature of the innovative interior concept is the variable seating system, with four rotating lounge chairs that allow a face-to-face seat configuration. In order to make getting in and out of the car easier, the electrically powered seats also swing outwards by 30 degrees as soon as the doors are opened. If necessary, the driver and front-seat passenger can also turn their eyes and attention towards the front – a prerequisite for manual driving. To this end the steering wheel extends automatically from the dashboard.

The leather-covered cushions of the lounge chairs are set in curved mounts of high-ly-polished aluminium. Each seating mount has a contrasting light band of blue LED lights and can also be manually swiveled. One key aspect of the research vehicle is the continuous exchange of information between vehicle, passengers and the out-side world.



This is facilitated by six display screens harmoniously integrated into the instrument panel and the rear and side panels, which turn the interior of the F 015 Luxury in Motion into a digital arena. Passengers can interact intuitively with the connected vehicle through gestures, eye-tracking or by touching the high-resolution screens. Sensors recognize the passengers’ hands and offer them user interfaces within con-venient reach that present appropriate operating options for each particular situa-tion. Particle streams on the displays visualize the vehicle’s movement.

Revolutionary vehicle structureThe high-strength body of the F 015 Luxury in Motion ensures optimum safety and supreme comfort for its passengers. At the same time, the bodyshell’s structure pro-vides the ideal basis for the door concept that makes getting in and out especially easy, and for the communication-oriented seating featuring four lounge chairs in a face-to-face arrangement.

New materials and structures were used to develop the highly efficient “Smart Body Structure (SBS)” of the F 015. By cleverly combining carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), aluminum and high-strength steels in a way that matches the varying re-quirements exactly, the lightweight engineering experts were able to make the body-shell 40 percent lighter compared with today’s production vehicles.251 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


Another key element of the body design concept is the innovative saloon-door-style door system featuring rear-hinged rear doors. The front and rear doors can be opened and closed independently of one another. With an opening angle of 90 degrees for all doors, the spacious interior can be easily and comfortably accessed on both sides. B-pillars were not needed. A very sturdy interconnected system with mechanical locking elements ensures exemplary safety standards. These elements securely interlock the front and rear doors when they are closed at the same time as fixing them firmly to the roof frame and side skirts. The resulting composite load path allows an extremely high amount of energy to be absorbed in the event of fron-tal or side impact, with minimal intrusion into the passenger compartment.

The doors themselves have a crucial role to play in the vehicle’s passive safety con-cept. The crash-responsive beltlines underneath the side windows are vital here. The PRE-SAFE Structure, previously unveiled on the ESF 2009 Experimental Safety Ve-hicle and now further enhanced, offers maximum safety while taking up minimum space: in a side-on collision, these bodywork elements “inflate” in an instant, just like an airbag, allowing them to absorb as much impact energy as possible.



In addition, the bodyshell of the F 015 Luxury in Motion was designed to allow the impact-protected integration of an electric drive system with fuel cell. This is based on the pioneering F-CELL PLUG-IN HYBRID system seen in the F 125! research vehicle from 2011, and combines on-board generation of electricity with an excep-tionally powerful and compact high-voltage battery. The pressure tank made from CFRP is designed to store the hydrogen.

The vision: greater quality of life for all city dwellersAs a foundation for creating the F 015 Luxury in Motion, experts from all areas of Mercedes-Benz developed a future scenario entitled “City of the Future 2030+”, which considered many aspects of mobile living.

The greater the advance of urbanization, the greater is the desire of the individual to be able to retreat to a private sphere. Autonomous driving will become a given. As drivers are relieved of work and stress in situations in which driving is not enjoyable, the time gained while in their car takes on a whole new quality. Time and space will become the luxury of the future.



New technologies and forms of communication open up numerous new possibilities for interaction, both between the vehicle and its passengers and between the vehicle and other road users.

Autonomous cars also open up new possibilities for urban infrastructure design. Following the example of today’s low-emission zones in city centers, special “safety zones” that are only accessible to autonomous vehicles could be created. Urban space would be regained by autonomous vehicles parking themselves on the periphery.

In the shared space of the future, humans and machines share the roads. The “car-friendly city” is transformed increasingly into the “people-friendly city” with-out any loss of individual freedom. The divide between residential, recreational and traffic areas therefore melts away. The result is superior quality of life for all urban dwellers.

The road to autonomous drivingEven now, vehicles from Mercedes-Benz are capable of detecting many different haz-ardous situations out on the road and reacting as the situation demands – by means of autonomous braking, for instance.



And from the C-Class through to the S-Class, there are already Mercedes-Benz models driving semi-autonomously on public roads today, equipped with features such as DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and the Stop&Go Pilot semi-au-tonomous traffic jam vehicle following function. Active Parking Assist with PARK-TRONIC allows automated parking with active steering and brake control in both parallel and end-on spaces.

In August 2013, Mercedes-Benz demonstrated to great effect that autonomous driving is possible now, even in complex urban and rural traffic situations. The close-to-production Mercedes-Benz S 500 INTELLIGENT DRIVE completed the approximately 100-kilometer journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim fully autono-mously, following the route Bertha Benz took in 1888 on the first ever long-distance drive by car.255 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


Mercedes-Benz is setting the pace of development in the area of trucks, too – as the innovator and launcher of intelligent assistance systems. With its Future Truck 2025, the brand presented the world’s first truck to feature autonomous driving at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in September 2014. In July 2014, this one-off vehicle, based on the Mercedes-Benz Actros 1845, drove at speeds of up to 80 km/h in realistic traffic situations on a section of the A14 autobahn near Magdeburg.

At the end of 2016, Volkswagen will start production of one of its most important new models in the past five decades in Chattanooga, Tennessee: a seven-seater mid-size SUV. As a preview to this vehicle, Volkswagen is now showing the five-seater Cross Coupe GTE at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This stylish and upscale SUV uses a plug-in hybrid system with a maximum output of 355 horsepower and an all-wheel-drive system that uses an “electric driveshaft”. The hybrid has a manufacturer-estimated fuel economy rating of 70 MPGe.

Klaus Bischoff, chief designer at Volkswagen says: “The Cross Coupe GTE is the ambassador of a new design language developed by Volkswagen for the U.S.” And he continues, “The concept car has a commanding presence; it is powerful with a look that could almost be described as aggressive.” “Numerous details hint at how we en-vision a future production SUV model for North America. The underlying concept combines German engineering and design with a vehicle that suits the American lifestyle.



That means high efficiency, clear and powerful design, logical operation and su-preme quality—combined with lots of space, superior performance, and outstanding comfort.”

The GTE acronym generally applies to all sporty Volkswagen models with a high-tech plug-in hybrid drivetrain. They offer the driving characteristics of a grand tour-er (Gran Turismo or GT) and, thanks to one or more electric motors and a battery (E as in Electric), they also offer zero-emissions driving. The Cross Coupe has a zero-emissions range of up to 20 miles and can reach 60 mph from rest in just 6.0 seconds. The car has various operating modes: E-Mode, GTE, Hybrid, Off-road and Battery Hold/Battery Charge.

The Cross Coupe GTE is the third concept car presented by Volkswagen on the way to the production version of the mid-size SUV. Together, all three concepts—the CrossBlue presented in Detroit in January 2013, the CrossBlue Coupe most recently shown in Los Angeles in November 2013 and the Cross Coupe GTE—represent just a part of the wide spectrum of SUV variants that can be produced off Volkswagen’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) architecture.

ExteriorThe Cross Coupe GTE, which is painted in Grand Pacific Glacier blue, has an even stronger presence than the concept cars unveiled in 2013. Although all three SUVs were based on the Volkswagen design DNA and have styling features in common, the Cross Coupe GTE’s detailing marks a break with the previous concept cars and thus increases the momentum towards series production.

The concept car now presented in Detroit is 190.8 inches long, 79.9 inches wide and 68.3 inches high. Klaus Bischoff says: “The car makes a visual statement from ev-ery angle. Regardless of whether you imagine the Cross Coupe GTE in Manhattan, driving along the Pacific Coast Highway in California or in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, this SUV looks upscale everywhere.”



The powerful exterior design is characterized by a very clear and logical line struc-ture. The precise edges of the long hood look like they have been cut with a laser. The headlights, turn signals and the radiator grille merge together seamlessly, with two aluminum bars (polished at the front, brushed on top) forming the basic struc-ture of the radiator grille.

The design of the lower air inlet is just as striking as that of the radiator grille. The outside is framed by high-gloss black trim, with a polished aluminum insert on the inside that mirrors the corresponding elements on the radiator grille. The LED dual headlights are a particularly striking and distinctive feature, with the outer modules generating the low beam, while the inner ones provide the high beam. The distinc-tive Daytime Running Light signature will also be seen in future production models. This consists of the four LED headlights and four “LED light wings”, two of which are in the radiator grille and two in the lower air intake.

The sharp front ridge of the hood forms a line that extends over the front fenders and below the windows to the tailgate. Another strong character line is formed at a lower level between the wheelarches and incorporates the door handles. Like the entire car, the side profile itself has powerful proportions and an upscale appearance.273 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


The combination of an A-pillar that is set a long way back and emphasizes the raised hood, the strikingly sloped C-pillar, and the short overhangs give the design a sporty yet rugged appearance. The overhangs also give the vehicle very competitive ramp breakover, approach and departure angles for excellent off-road performance.

The wheelarches emphasize the power and the physical presence of the SUV, and give it an extremely confident stance. The wheelarch on the driver’s side houses the service flap for the charging plug for the lithium-ion battery and the passenger side has the fuel filler flap. The 22-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, shod with 285/40 tires, have 10 highly polished spokes.

At the rear, the side character line feature merges into a polished aluminum trim strip, above which are trapezoidal LED taillights. The Cross Coupe GTE also follows the new Volkswagen design language for the U.S. at the back, with a focus on clear-ly defined horizontal line structures. The striking design of the rear lights, the strict horizontal look of the tailgate and an aluminum panel extending right across the bumper follow this language. A skidplate with an integrated diffuser forms the final major design element at the back of the SUV.



InteriorThe Cross Coupe GTE not only previews future Volkswagen SUV exterior design—it also shows how Volkswagen designers envision a mid-size SUV interior of tomor-row. This look ahead reveals the consistent further development of two key features of Volkswagen interiors. The first is the clear, horizontal orientation of the interior architecture, especially the control panel.

The second characteristic feature of every Volkswagen interior is the self-explanatory and intuitive operation of all elements and systems. Volkswagen will retain this in the age of interactive information and control systems. In the Cross Coupe GTE, the combination of gloss black applications with the seamlessly integrated displays and chrome elements creates a striking new interior design language that is clearly influ-enced by the German Bauhaus movement.

Under the windshield, the concept car features an Ink Blue Nappa leather border that matches the Grand Pacific Glacier exterior paintwork. Like a wing, the infor-mation and control level extends across the whole width of the car. On the outside of the instrument panel, there are two horizontal polished aluminum air vents. The 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, which is integrated in the middle of the control panel, is framed by two sets of vertical air vents on either side.



The whole area boasts a completely new architecture so that the infotainment and instrument panel appear to be a single unit. All functions are controlled via touch-screen. This high-end digital world is capped by an Active Info Display, with displays that can be individually set by the driver.

The driver and front passenger can manage all infotainment functions and the basic vehicle configuration via the 10.1-inch touchscreen, using proximity sensors and gesture control. Gesture control is a completely new feature, and allows occupants to swipe over a playlist from some distance away to browse and play tunes.

The layout of the graphics changes depending on the selected driving profile—Snow, Sport, On-road and Off-road. Furthermore, navigation data can be displayed in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional form. In the 3-D view the user can configure the display individually at three or even more levels that float above one another in a virtual space. They all show the map with the position of the vehicle but with differ-ent information: if the driver has configured the Points-of-Interest (POI), the middle level has geographic information such as the current altitude while the bottom Car level has the route and position. The levels can be freely moved from the top to the bottom, but individual settings are always made on the top level. The 12.3-inch in-strumentation screen has a conventional shape, but all the information shown is dig-ital. The 1,440 x 540 pixel resolution gives extremely high-quality interactive graphic presentation of all details.



Individual interactions/graphics are allocated to different basic functions. The graphics change, for example depending on the drive mode selected, such as E-Mode or GTE, and information such as driving, navigation and assistance functions can be integrated in the area as required. A brushed aluminum horizontal strip runs across the whole width of the interior below the infotainment screen and instrument clus-ter. A touchscreen below this strip is used to control the climate control, including the heated and cooled seats. The shift lever for the 6-speed DSG® dual-clutch auto-matic transmission always remains in a central position, like a joystick.

A quick click activates the R, N and D modes; a separate button, integrated in the lever, switches to P. The rotary driving profile selector for the On-road, Off-road, Sport and Snow profiles is housed behind the shift lever and uses lightpipe elements (transparent, perfused with LED light) that are fully in keeping with the modern look of the interior. Black hard keys take care of the ESC, E-Mode and GTE-Mode, while aluminum is used for the start/stop button.

The seats feature elegant bi-color semi-aniline Nappa leather surfaces, with perfo-rated leather in the center that creates a visual link to the aluminum covers on the high-end speakers in the doors. The rear seat bench has a two-third/one-third split fold, resulting in a continuous cargo floor. The rear-seat climate control is also con-trolled via a touchscreen. Attachments for tablets are incorporated in the headrests of the rear seats and the Volkswagen Media Control app enables them to access the radio, media sources, and navigation via Wi-Fi.277 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


PowertrainThanks to the modular transverse matrix (MQB) architecture, Volkswagen can not only offer a vehicle with conventional gasoline and diesel engines, but can produce them as plug-in hybrids, with natural gas powertrains, and as zero tailpipe emissions electric and fuel cell vehicles. This means that the Cross Coupe GTE, too, can be produced with every conceivable powertrain.

The SUV concept is powered by a 3.6-liter VR6 gasoline engine and two electric mo-tors. The six-cylinder direct-injection engine (FSI) delivers 276 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The two electric motors produce 54 hp and 162 lb-ft (front) and 114 hp and 199 lb-ft (rear). They are powered by a compact lithium-ion battery housed in the center tunnel, which is rated at 14.1 kWh. The total output of the drive system adds up to 355 hp and 280 lb-ft, enough to power the Cross Coupe GTE onto a top speed of 130 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.0 seconds.

The Cross Coupe GTE features a number of driving profiles: On-road (with Com-fort and Eco sub-modes), Off-road (with Rocks, Sludge & Sand and Gravel), Sport and Snow. The profiles change the setup of the SUV. There are also five drive modes: E-Mode; Hybrid; GTE; Off-road; and Battery Hold / Battery Charge.

E-Mode. Thanks to the lithium-ion battery, the Cross Coupe GTE can travel up to 20 miles as an EV. In E-Mode, the 114-hp rear electric motor drives the vehicle and the VR6 engine is shut down and decoupled from the drivetrain by disengaging the clutch. As soon as the gasoline engine needs to be restarted due, for instance, to the battery charge status, it re-engages smoothly in a fraction of a second. Power elec-tronics manage the flow of high-voltage energy from and to the battery and to the electric motors. The 12-volt electrical system is supplied by a DC/DC converter. The battery is charged via external power sources or while driving.



Hybrid. The concept car starts in Hybrid Mode by default. The Cross Coupe GTE is then a classical full hybrid that charges the battery via regenerative braking and au-tomatically uses the VR6 engine and/or the electric motor depending on the drive situation. In this mode, the battery state of charge is kept constant; the driver can actively influence this by using the battery hold function.

Coasting: As soon as the driver takes his or her foot off the accelerator and the bat-tery is sufficiently charged, the gasoline engine and electric motors are shut down and disengaged from the drivetrain.

• Recuperation Mode: If the driver removes his or her foot from the accelerator or brakes when the battery is not sufficiently charged, both electric motors work as generators and feed the energy generated during braking to the lithium-ion bat-tery. In this case, too, the VR6 engine is shut down and disengaged.

• Driving with the VR6 engine: When the gasoline engine alone is powering the vehicle, the concept car is purely front-wheel drive to achieve excellent fuel econ-omy.

GTE. The driver uses the GTE button to switch to the most dynamic side of the vehi-cle. This makes the throttle, transmission and steering characteristics even sportier. In addition, the VR6 engine and the electric motors work together to deliver the full system output and the maximum system torque.279 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


Off-road. All four wheels are powered as soon as the driver activates this mode. In this case (and when the battery charge is low), the front electric motor is employed exclusively as a generator that is driven by the gasoline engine in order to provide the power for its counterpart at the rear axle. As the power to drive the rear axle flows electronically, the all-wheel-drive system is referred to as an “electric drive-shaft”. Since the VR6 engine drives the rear electric motor via the front motor in Off-road Mode, all-wheel drive is available even when the battery has a low state of charge and the car is running as a plug-in-hybrid.

Battery Charge/Battery Hold. The dual-mode Battery Hold (energy content of the battery stays constant) and Battery Charge (battery is charged whilst driving) is ac-tivated via a sub-menu in the infotainment system. It serves to hold the vehicle in E-Mode, for example, when the driver knows they are about to enter an urban area.



Mercedes-Benz C350 HybridFollowing its premiere in the S-Class, Mercedes-Benz is now offering its most ad-vanced hybrid technology yet in the C-Class.

With a range of 20 miles in purely electric mode, local emission-free driving is now a reality. Its four-cylinder gasoline engine, in conjunction with a powerful electric motor, gives it a total system output of 275 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.

This allows the new C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID to deliver the performance of a sports car while still offering exemplary fuel consumption. In addition, the standard AIR-MATIC air suspension and convenient Pre-Entry Climate Control system that can be controlled via the internet create a truly exceptional level of driving and climate comfort. Following the C300 BlueTEC HYBRID, the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID is the second hybrid model in the new C-Class and the second Mercedes-Benz model to feature PLUG-IN HYBRID technology. Thanks to the combination of combustion engine and electric drive, hybrid drive systems deliver impressively low fuel consumption with high performance. The electric motor is able to replace or support the combus-tion engine in a variety of situations, while making practical use of energy generated while braking by converting it into electric energy and storing it.



The C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID uses the most advanced form of hybrid technology currently available. Its electrical energy storage unit is a high-voltage lithium- ion battery with a total capacity of 6.2 kWh, which can be charged from an external power source to effectively contribute to the low consumption and emission figures. The battery is water-cooled, weighs around 220 pounds and is mounted in a sheet-steel housing underneath the rear axle in order to maximize crash safety, driving dynamics and trunk space.

Thanks to an intelligent on-board charging system, the battery can be quickly re-charged at a wallbox, at one of the growing number of public charging points or even charged via a standard domestic socket.

Despite the space taken up by the battery, the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID Sedan still offers a trunk capacity of 11.8 cubic feet.

PLUG-IN HYBRID for the first time now with a four-cylinder engineIn the new Mercedes-Benz C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID, the hybrid drive concept is combined for the first time with an efficient four-cylinder gasoline engine. From a displacement of just under two liters, it produces 208 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Its direct injection system with spray-guided combustion uses electronically precise controlled multiple injection and fast multi-spark ignition to deliver out-standing performance coupled with high efficiency and exemplary emissions. The electric motor of the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID has an output of up to 80 horsepower and delivers 251 lb-ft of torque. Overall, the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID offers a total system output of 275 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.



7- speed automatic with additional clutchThe hybrid module of the standard 7-speed automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC PLUS incorporates both the electric motor and an additional clutch between the combustion engine and the electric motor. When driving in all-electric mode, this decouples the combustion engine from the drive train. It also offers the possibility of moving off using the combustion engine with the performance of a wet start-up clutch. In this case, the clutch is a substitute for the torque converter.

The performance of a sports carThe high overall system output and intelligent engine management give this mod-el the dynamic performance of a nimble sports car. This is combined with the ride comfort of a premium sedan, along with fuel consumption and environmental com-patibility at a level that, until not that long ago, would not even have been expected of many small cars. The Sedan can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 130 mph. The C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID offers all the characteristics of a state-of-the-art hy-brid vehicle. These include first and foremost:

Silent start: The vehicle starts virtually silently and runs in electric mode. At this point, the combustion engine is generally held inactive. Electric output of up to 80 horsepower is available for driving in all- electric mode.287 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


Boost: The electric motor kicks in to boost the output of the combustion engine by a further 80 horsepower– for example for rapid acceleration.

Energy recuperation: During braking and coasting, energy is recovered and stored in the battery. This energy can then be used at a later stage for electric driving or the boost function.

Making by brakingThe greatest potential for lowering the energy consumption of hybrid drive systems lies in maximizing energy recovery during coasting and braking. When the brake pedal is depressed, the electric motor initially takes on the task of decelerating, act-ing here as an alternator. If firmer braking is required, the disk brakes will then in-tervene mechanically to provide additional grip. This overlap between conventional mechanical braking and the electric braking performance of the electric motor in alternator mode increases effectiveness but remains imperceptible. Furthermore, the intelligent engine management system of the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID works in the background to select the ideal combination between the combustion engine and the electric motor.



Impulses for the driverOne new feature of the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID is a haptic accelerator pedal, which can help to reduce fuel consumption and thus also exhaust emissions. It provides two types of information:

When driving in electric mode, if the driver’s foot meets a point of resistance on the gas pedal this is an indication that maximum electric performance is being deliv-ered. If the driver continues to depress the gas pedal beyond this resistance point, the combustion engine will kick in.

A double impulse from the ECO Assist function signals that the driver should re-move their foot from the gas pedal in order to switch off the combustion engine and decouple it from the drive train. Assuming that the driver does what the double impulse suggests, the intelligent engine management system of the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID will vary the deceleration mode between unpowered (sailing) and recuper-ation, using data from the vehicle’s radar systems as its basis.

Individual transmission modeThe complex technology of the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID makes it no more difficult to drive than a conventional vehicle with an automatic transmission. But anyone wanting to can also intervene manually and regulate the hybrid interplay themselves, with the help of five operating modes and three transmission modes. This is done via an operating mode switch and a transmission mode switch located in the center console. A display in the middle of the instrument cluster shows the current setting. Selecting a specific transmission mode enables the driver to define certain functions that influence the driving experience.289 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


The following transmission modes are available:

• I Individual: Individual definition of the characteristics of the transmission mode, including:

• Drive system• Chassis and suspension• Steering• ECO Assist• Climate control

• S + Sport+: Maximum boost performance, very sporty gear changes, the combus-tion engine is always active, particularly stiff suspension and damping settings.

• S Sport: Enhanced boost performance, sporty gear changes, the combustion en-gine is always active, stiff suspension and damping settings.

• C Comfort: Boost performance and recuperation optimized for comfort and con-sumption, electric drive/ engine shut-off possible up to 80 mph, and comfort-ori-ented standard settings.

• E Economy: Boost performance is consumption-optimized, recuperation min-imized in favor of coasting distance. All-electric mode and engine shut-off are possible. If the navigation system’s route guidance function is switched on and the Hybrid operating mode selected, the system will control the charge status of the high-voltage battery according to the route, ensuring that the electric operating mode is used as far as possible in built-up areas. The ECO Assist is also active.

ECO Assist activates an additional function, using the radar technology behind the standard proximity warning system in order to do so.

If the radar system identifies a slower-moving vehicle ahead, it sends a double im-pulse through the “haptic accelerator pedal” to signal to the driver to take their foot off the accelerator.

The car will then adjust its deceleration automatically, using the electric motor to do so. In this way frequent braking, particularly in stop-and-go traffic, can be avoided.



Choice of four operating modesIn addition to selecting a transmission program, the driver of the C350 PLUG- IN HYBRID can also use the operating mode switch to influence the regulation be-tween electric mode and the use of the combustion engine for driving. In the Eco and Comfort transmission modes, the following operating modes are available:

Hybrid: All hybrid functions such as electric operating mode, boost and recupera-tion are available and are applied according to the driving situation and route in the most fuel-efficient manner.

E-mode: Used for all-electric driving – for example in inner-city areas or because the battery holds sufficient charge for the remainder of the journey.

E-save: The charge status of the battery is maintained – for example to allow all-elec-tric driving in an environmental zone at a later stage in the journey. Electric driving and the boost function are therefore only available to a limited extent.

Charge: Allows the battery to be recharged while driving using the combustion en-gine – for example in order to ensure a higher state of battery charge for later parts of the journey. The combustion engine remains switched on and fuel consumption may increase. Electric operation is not possible.

In the transmission modes S+ and S, the “hybrid” operating mode is activated. In the “Individual” mode, the choice of available operating modes depends upon the drive system setting.291 | WWW.AUTOVMAGAZINE.COM


Route-based operating strategyThe best strategy for efficient operation is anticipatory driving. If the exact destina-tion is known because the relevant data has been entered into the navigation system, charge and discharge of the high-voltage battery in the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID is controlled to ensure the optimal use of energy over the whole route.

Another key point is the requirement that urban areas should be reached with a fully charged battery if possible, so that the vehicle can be driven efficiently in stop-and-go traffic – and frequently in electric mode.

Air suspension and Pre-Entry Climate Control as standardThe new C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID offers the familiar range of equipment and ap-pointment options that are available in the C-Class. In addition, it includes the en-hanced comfort feature AIRMATIC air suspension as part of its standard specifica-tion, along with a further co Pre-Entry Climate Control, a further standard feature, makes it possible to set the desired temperature for the interior of the vehicle before setting off – cooling it in the summer, or warming it up in the winter. This can be activated by pre-setting the departure time, which can be set in the vehicle or from home via the internet. This is possible due to the electrically powered refrigerant compressor and electric heating elements for the warm air circulation. In vehicles



Pre-Entry Climate Control, a further standard feature, makes it possible to set the desired temperature for the interior of the vehicle before setting off – cooling it in the summer, or warming it up in the winter. This can be activated by pre-setting the departure time, which can be set in the vehicle or from home via the internet. This is possible due to the electrically powered refrigerant compressor and electric heating elements for the warm air circulation. In vehicles with the appropriate specification, the seat ventilation or heating will also be activated.

In addition to the Pre-Entry Climate Control function, the charging of the vehi-cle can also be controlled online. It is also possible to check the charge status of the high-voltage battery or the vehicle’s potential range in electric mode.

Two different faces for the PLUG-IN HYBRID as wellThe C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID is supplied with an aggressively elegant design, which emphasizes its sporty, premium-vehicle character. As an alternative, the Sedan is also available with the optional Luxury Package. With its classic radiator grille and the three-pointed star on the hood, the C-Class conveys prestige status and a sense of modern luxury.

The Mercedes-Benz designers have styled the interior at a level which is rarely en-countered even in higher vehicle categories. This is evident from the carefully chosen high-class materials and their pleasant touch and feel as well as from the precision of the finely crafted details. Prominently located immediately above the center console is a centrally positioned free-standing central display unit. All the functions of the head unit can be intuitively controlled using a rotary knob or the optional touchpad (included with the COMAND Navigation system). Also available: A head-up dis-play that projects important information onto the windscreen directly in the driver’s field of vision. The C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID is fitted as standard with halogen head-lamps. In addition to the standard-fit headlamps, two energy-saving LED variants are available: A static system and a dynamic version with Active Curve Illumination.

Assistance systems for added safety and comfortThe C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID Sedan offers the same extensive range of safety and assistance systems as all other C-Class models. Two of the systems fitted as standard are ATTENTION ASSIST, which can warn of inattentiveness and fatigue, and COL-LISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which protects against a collision at speeds of over 5 mph.



If the danger remains and the driver fails to react, this system can also undertake autonomous braking at speeds of up to 65mph, helping to reduce the severity of an accident involving a slower moving vehicle. Further systems from the new S and E-Class, either new or with significantly enhanced functions, are also available as an option.

Vibrant infotainment experienceEven the basic version of the sophisticated multimedia system found in the C-Class is internet-compatible, if there is an active mbrace® subscription and Mercedes-Benz Apps package. This enables the internet to be surfed without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary. Also standard is a Hands-free Bluetooth interface, which allows calls to be placed or answered and access to select phonebooks without taking your hands off the steering wheel. Standard Bluetooth audio streaming also allows for convenient cable-free playback.

Extensive know-how in the field of hybrid and electric vehiclesIn 1982, at the same time as it was launching the Mercedes-Benz 190, the prede-cessor to the C-Class, Mercedes-Benz also presented the first concept vehicle with hybrid drive – a two-cylinder horizontally opposed engine that served to charge the battery. A number of other experimental vehicles followed, and in 2009 Mer-cedes-Benz was proud to debut the world’s first standard-specification hybrid drive with a lithium-ion battery. For a long time this S400 HYBRID was the most fuel-effi-cient gasoline-powered luxury sedan and the most successful hybrid in its segment.



The second-generation hybrid transmission evolved on the basis of the 7G TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. It premiered in 2012 in the E300 BlueTEC HYBRID, the first diesel hybrid in the premium segment worldwide. After the E300 BlueTEC HYBRID, S400 HYBRID, S300 BlueTEC HYBRID, C300 BlueTEC HYBRID and S500 PLUG-IN HYBRID, the C350 PLUG-IN HYBRID is the latest hybrid model to come from Mercedes Benz.

In the years to come the main emphasis will be on plug-in hybrids. The company is also a leading player in the field of purely electric mobility.
