1
Chapter 1Important Safety Information
Read this manual carefully before installing the AutoBoom system.

• Follow all safety information presented within this manual.

• If you require assistance with any portion of the installation or service of your Raven equipment, contact your local Raven dealer for support.

• Follow all safety labels affixed to the AutoBoom system components. Be sure to keep safety labels in good condition and replace any missing or damaged labels. To obtain replacements for missing or damaged safety labels, contact your local Raven dealer.

When operating the machine after installing AutoBoom, observe the following safety measures:

• Be alert and aware of surroundings.

• Do not operate AutoBoom or any agricultural equipment while under the influence of alcohol or an illegal substance.

• Remain in the operator’s position in the machine at all times when AutoBoom is engaged.

• Disable AutoBoom when exiting from the operator’s seat and machine.

• Do not drive the machine with AutoBoom enabled on any public thorough-fare or main road.

• Determine and remain a safe working distance from other individuals. The operator is responsible for disabling AutoBoom when the safe working distance has diminished.

• Ensure AutoBoom is disabled prior to starting any maintenance work on AutoBoom or the machine.

Please review the operation and safety instructions included with your implement and/or controller.

Chapter 1

When starting the machine for the first time, be sure that all persons stand clear, in case a hose has not been completely tightened.

This machine must remain stationary and switched off with the booms unfolded and supported while installation or maintenance is conducted.

Hydraulic Safety

Hydraulics may be under pressure. Never attempt to open or work on a hydraulic system with the equipment running. Care should always be taken when first opening a system that has previously been pressurized.

When disconnecting the hydraulic hoses or purging is required, be aware that the hydraulic oil may be extremely hot and under high pressure. Caution must be exercised. Any work carried out on the hydraulic system must be performed in accordance with the machine manufacturers's approved maintenance instructions. Raven Industries recommends that appropriate protective equipment be worn at all times when working on the hydraulic system. When installing AutoBoom hydraulics or performing diagnostics, maintenance, or routine service, ensure precautions are taken to prevent any foreign material or contaminants from being introduced in the machine's hydraulic system. Objects or materials that are able to bypass the machine’s hydraulic filtration system will adversely reduce performance and possibly damage the AutoBoom hydraulic valves.

Electrical Safety

Do not reverse power leads. Doing so could cause severe damage to the equipment. Always make sure that the power leads are connected to the correct polarity as marked. Ensure that the power cable is the last cable to be connected.

Congratulations on your purchase of the Raven AutoBoom system. This system is designed to provide automated boom height adjustment for agricultural spraying equipment.

Overview of the AutoBoom Installation ProcessThe following table lists the steps you must take in order to install AutoBoom, and which chapters contain detailed instructions about those steps.

Note: After the completion of the hardware installation, refer to the instructions in the Calibration & Operation Manual that came with your AutoBoom system.

RecommendationsObserve the following recommendations while installing the AutoBoom system:

• Use part numbers to identify parts.

• Do not remove the plastic wrapping from a part until it is necessary for installation.

• Do not remove plastic caps from a part until it is necessary for installation.

Reviewing AutoBoom Kit ContentsThis section contains a list of the kit contents that you should have received in these AutoBoom kits. Before you begin assembling the kit, compare the items in your AutoBoom kit with this list. If you have questions about your kit, contact your Raven dealer.

Preparing for InstallationBefore installing AutoBoom, park the machine where the ground is level, clean, and dry. Leave the machine turned off for the duration of the installation process.

During the installation process, follow good safety practices. Be sure to carefully read the instructions in this manual as you complete the installation process.

Before beginning the procedures in each chapter, review the lists of parts you will need. Remove the protective plastic caps and plugs only from the parts that you will use during that phase of the installation process.

Chapter 3PowerGlide: Hydraulics
Process OverviewTo route the new hoses and connections for the hydraulic system, you must complete the following steps:

1. Install Fittings on the AutoBoom Valve

2. (Optional) Install the PowerGlide Dual Cartridge Option

4. Identify your Machine’s Stack Valve

5. Install the Pressure and Tank Hoses

Installing Fittings on the AutoBoom ValveFirst we must install the proper fittings on the AutoBoom Valve so that it can be configured to function with the machine’s hydraulic system.

Installing the PowerGlide Dual Cartridge OptionThis procedure will demonstrate how to install a second cartridge to the AutoBoom Valve, which will enable the AutoBoom system to operate the left and right booms independently. Otherwise, the AutoBoom system will operate the left and right booms in conjunction.

Note: To install the PowerGlide Dual Cartridge Option, you will need to order a Mechanical Cartridge (P/N 334-0002-072) from your Raven Dealer.

To Mount the AutoBoom Valve

1. Secure the AutoBoom Valve (P/N 063-0131-119) to the Mounting Plate (P/N 107-0171-619) using the 5/16” Hex Bolts (P/N 311-0049-235) and 5/16” Lock Washers (P/N 313-1000-019).

2. Secure the Mounting Plate to the machine’s boom using the 3 1/16” U-Bolts (P/N 107-0171-606 or 607) and 3/8” Lock Nut (P/N 312-1001-164).

Note: The valve should be installed below the machine’s manifold on the center rack with “P” and “T “facing forward.

To Install the Pressure and Tank Hoses3. Locate and disconnect the pressure hose from the right side of the machine’s stack valve.

Note: This should be the port labeled ‘P’. If you cannot determine which line is the pressure line, trace back each line until you find the line that connects to the hydraulic pump. That is the pressure line.

4. Install a Tee Fitting (P/N 333-0012-043) to the pressure port on the machine valve.

5. Connect the machine’s pressure hose to the installed Tee Fitting.

6. Connect the straight fitting on the Pressure Hose (P/N 214-1000-514) to the installed Tee Fitting.

7. Connect the other 90° fitting of the AutoBoom Pressure Hose to Port ‘P’ on the AutoBoom Valve (P/N 063-0131-119).

8. Repeat these steps to install the Tank Hose (P/N 214-1000-512) using the Tee Fitting (P/N 333-0012-039) to connect to the machine’s tank line and to Port ‘T’ on the AutoBoom Valve.

9. Once the hoses are connected check to make sure that the hydraulic fittings and connections are tight.

1. Connect one end of the left UP hose (P/N 214-1000-513) to left UP tee (P/N 333-0012-043).

2. Route hose back and connect other end of hose to ‘LC’ port on AutoBoom Valve.

3. Connect one end of right UP hose (P/N 214-1000-513) to right UP tee (P/N 333-012-043).

4. Route hose back and connect other end of hose to ‘RC’ port on AutoBoom Valve.

Mounting the PowerGlide Wheels

Note: Wheel mounting locations may be influenced by the boom configuration. Make sure that the wheels will not interfere with or be damaged while folding or unfolding the booms.Determine an appropriate location for mounting a wheel on the left boom. The wheel should be mounted outside of the boom fold but inside of the boom breakaway.

1. Insert the Wheel Axle into the Wheel Mounting Bracket (P/N 116-0159-592).

2. Position the Wheel Mounting Bracket halfway down the axle shaft. Install two 1/2” Hex Bolts (P/N 311-0058-186) and hand-tighten two 1/2” Hex Nuts (P/N 312-1001-043) in the Wheel Mounting Bracket.

3. Position the top of the mounting bracket on the bottom side of the boom.

Note: The bracket should be installed so that the wheel will trail the boom slightly.

4. Attach the mounting bracket to the boom by installing the two 5 1/16” U-bolts (P/N 107-0171-611) and securing them with the four 3/8” Lock Nuts (P/N 312-1001-164).

5. Loosen and remove the two axle bolts so that the wheel height can be adjusted.

6. Adjust the wheel height so that the bottom of the wheel touches the ground or nearly so, then securely reinstall the axle bolts and nuts.

7. Repeat these steps to install the right wheel.

Process OverviewTo install the wiring for the AutoBoom system, you must complete the following steps:

Wiring Connections

For wiring connections made outside the cab, apply Dielectric Silicone Grease (P/N 222-0000-006) generously on both the female and male end of the connectors. Application of the grease will prevent corrosion to the pins and wires.

To Connect the Harness

1. On the Harness Cable (P/N 115-0230-003), locate the LEFT SOLENOID connector, then connect it to Port ‘LF’ on the AutoBoom Valve.

2. Connect the connector labeled RIGHT SOLENOID to Port ‘RT’.

3. Locate the machine boom function coils near the machine’s boom valve stack.

4. Disconnect the connector from the machine’s “Left Up” coil. Install a Tee Adaptor Cable (P/N 115-0171-558) between the coil and to the machine’s coil connector.

5. One at a time, connect Tee Adaptor Cables to the “Left Down,” “Right Up,” and “Right Down” coils and to the coil connectors.

6. On the Harness Cable, locate the LEFT SOLENOID SENSE connectors. Isolate the connector labeled UP and connect it to the “Left Up” coil via the installed Tee Adaptor Cable.

Installing Fittings on the AutoBoom ValveFirst we must install the proper fittings on the AutoBoom valve so that it can be configured to function with the machine’s hydraulic system.

Note: When installing the UltraGlide AutoBoom system, make sure that the pre-installed floating orifices in the Left Cylinder (LC) and Right Cylinder (RC) ports are installed with the slot facing out. These orifices are not used with the PowerGlide Plus system and are not included with a PowerGlide Plus system.

1. Secure the AutoBoom Valve (P/N 063-0131-120 or 122) to the Mounting Plate (P/N 107- 0171-802) using the 5/16” Hex Bolts (P/N 311-0049-235) and 5/16” Lock Washers (P/N 313-1000-019).

2. Secure the Mounting Plate to the machine’s boom using the 4” U-Bolts (P/N 107-0171-606 or 607) and 3/8” Lock Nut (P/N 312-1001-164).

WARNINGHydraulics are under pressure. Care should always be taken with a system that has been pressurized. When disconnecting or purging hydraulic hoses, be aware that the hydraulic oil within the machine system may be extremely hot and under high pressure.

CAUTIONWhen installing AutoBoom hydraulics or performing diagnostics, maintenance, or routine service, ensure precautions are taken to prevent any foreign material or contaminants from being introduced in the machine’s hydraulic system.

Objects or materials that are able to bypass the machine’s hydraulic filtration system will adversely reduce performance and possibly damage the AutoBoom hydraulic valves.

To Install the Pressure and Tank Hoses1. Locate and disconnect the pressure hose from the right side of the machine’s stack valve.

Note: This should be the port labeled ‘P’. If you cannot determine which line is the pressure line, trace back each line until you find the line that connects to the hydraulic pump. That is the pressure line.

2. Install a Tee Fitting (P/N 333-0012-043) to the pressure port on the machine valve.

3. Connect the machine’s pressure hose to the installed Tee Fitting.

4. Connect the straight fitting on the Pressure Hose (P/N 214-1000-514) to the installed Tee Fitting.

5. Connect the other 90° fitting of the AutoBoom Pressure Hose to Port ‘P’ on the AutoBoom Valve (P/N 063-0131-119).

6. Repeat these steps to install the Tank Hose (P/N 214-1000-512) using the Tee Fitting (P/N 333-0012-039) to the machine’s tank line and to Port ‘T’ on the AutoBoom Valve.

7. Once the hoses are connected check to make sure that the hydraulic fittings and connections are tight.

To mount the PowerGlide Plus wheels1. Remove the nuts from the Left Wheel Axle.

1. Place the Wheel (P/N 322-0131-004) on the Left Wheel Axle (P/N 063-0131-590).

2. Align and place the Retainer Bracket (P/N 107-0171-617) over the Wheel.

3. Reinstall the lug nuts on the wheel to secure the Wheel and Retainer Bracket.

4. Insert the Left Wheel Axle into the Wheel Mounting Bracket (P/N 116-0159-592).

5. Position the Wheel Mounting Bracket halfway down the axle shaft. Install the 1/2” Hex Bolts (P/N 311-0058-186) and hand-tighten the 1/2” Hex Nuts (P/N 312-1001-043).

6. Position the Wheel Mounting Bracket on the bottom side of the boom.

Note: The bracket should be installed so that the wheel will trail the boom slightly.

7. Attach the mounting bracket to the boom by installing the U-bolts (P/N 107-0171-611) and securing them with the four 3/8” Lock Nuts (P/N 312-1001-164).

8. Loosen the two axle bolts so that the wheel height can be adjusted.

9. Adjust the wheel height so that the bottom of the wheel touches the ground or nearly so, then securely reinstall the axle bolts and nuts.

Note: For height purposes wheels can be mounted to the main boom section.

10. Repeat these steps to install the right wheel.l.

Mounting the UltraGlide SensorsNote: Sensor mounting locations may be influenced by the boom configuration. Make sure that

the sensors will not interfere with or be damaged while folding or unfolding the booms.Locate an appropriate location for mounting a sensor on the boom. The sensor should be mounted outside of the boom fold but inside of the boom breakaway.When mounting two sensors per boom, the inside sensor must be turned sideways in order to fold the booms without the sensors interfering.

1. Mount the sensor (P/N 063-0130-018C) in the middle of the machine off of the back spray bar using U-bolts (P/N 107-0171-611) and nuts (P/N 312-1001-164).

2. Plug sensor into center sensor plug off of the main AutoBoom harness.

4. Repeat these steps to connect the right sensor cable.

Wiring Connections

For wiring connections made outside the cab, apply Dielectric Silicone Grease (P/N 222-0000-006) generously on the male end of the connectors. Application of the grease will prevent corrosion to the pins and wires.

CAUTIONDo not reverse the power leads. Doing so will cause severe damage to the equipment. Always check to make sure that the power leads are connected with the correct polarity. Ensure that the power cable is the last cable to be connected.

1. Mount the AutoBoom Node (P/N 063-0130-013) to the machine’s center rack within a close proximity (3 feet or 1 meter) of the machine’s boom function coils and the AutoBoom Valve.

2. Insert the large, rectangular node connector on the Harness Cable (P/N 115-0230-006) into the left port of the AutoBoom Node.

3. Tighten the bolt on the node connector to secure.

1. Locate the LEFT PRESS and RIGHT PRESS connectors on the Harness Cable (P/N 115-0230-006).

2. Route these connectors to the AutoBoom Valve (P/N 063-0131-120 or 122).

3. Connect the LEFT PRESS connector to Port ‘G1’, then connect the RIGHT PRESS connector to Port ‘G2’.

4. Route and connect the LEFT SOLENOID connector to Port ‘LF’ and the RIGHT SOLENOID connector to Port ‘RT’ on the AutoBoom Valve.

5. Route and connect the LEFT PROP connector to Port ‘5A’ and the RIGHT PROP connector to Port ‘13A’.

6. Locate the machine’s boom function coils.

Note: See above picture. Location of coils will vary with each machine.

7. Locate the machine’s 'Left Up” coil and disconnect its connector. Install one of the supplied Tee Adaptor Cables (P/N 115-0171-558) between the machine coil and its connector.

8. Install Tee Adaptor Cables, one at a time, on the following machine coils: “Left Down,” “Right Up,” and “Right Down.”

9. On the Harness Cable, locate the LEFT SOLENOID SENSE connectors. Locate the connector labeled UP, then connect it to the machine’s “Left Up” coil via the installed Tee Adaptor Cable.

10. Connect the other (down) LEFT SOLENOID SENSE connector to the machine “Left Down” function coil via the installed Tee Adaptor Cable.

11. Likewise, connect the RIGHT SOLENOID SENSE connectors to the “Right Up” and “Right Down” coils.

12. Locate machine’s center section up an down coils underneath the rear of the spray tank and disconnect its connection.

13. Install one of the supplied Tee cables (P/N 115-0230-037/039) between the coil and its connector off the machine center section raise coil.

14. On the main harness cable, locate the CTR valve UP connector and plug into the tee cable connector that leads to the coil. Locate the other CTR sense UP on the main harness and plug into the connector that leads to the harness.

15. Likewise, connect the down connectors to the center section down coil and harness.

16. [UltraGlide Only] On the harness, locate the LEFT SENSOR and RIGHT SENSOR connectors. Connect the LEFT SENSOR connector to the left Sensor Cable, then connect the RIGHT SENSOR connector to the right Sensor Cable.

Note: These are the cables that were routed toward the AutoBoom Valve in the previous chapter.

1. Route the Power/CAN cable (P/N 115-0230-007) into the machine cab, on the right-hand side.

2. Locate the CAN connector on the Power/CAN cable. Connect the CAN connector to the console that controls your AutoBoom system via the CAN connector on your console’s cable. If a CAN system is not already installed on the vehicle, a CAN Power Adaptor Tee Kit (P/N 117-0159-923) will be necessary.

Note: If you have an AutoBoom Controller, a CAN Power Adaptor Tee (P/N 117-0159-923) is required. Connect the CAN connector on the AutoBoom Controller Cable (P/N 115-0230-005) and AutoBoom cable (P/N 115-0230-007) to the CAN Power Adaptor Tee cable. Raven recommends that a Passive Terminator (P/N 063-0172-369) is connected to the remaining CAN connector on the CAN Power Adaptor Tee cable.For specific cable configuration, consult your console’s installation manual.

To Install the Power Leads3. On the Power/CAN Cable locate the cable that has two power leads, one red and one white.

4. Route this cable directly to the machine’s battery.
