AutoCAD®drawingscanreferenceseveraltypesofexternalfilesincludingotherdrawings,textfonts,images,andplotconfigurations.ThepathstothesereferencedfilesaresavedineachAutoCADdrawing.Sometimesyoumayneedtomovedrawingfilesorthefilesthattheyreferencetodifferentfoldersortodifferentdiskdrives.Thesavedreferencepathsthenneedtobeupdated.Toopeneachdrawingfileandthenupdateeachsavedreferencepathmanuallycanbeatediousprocess.
TheAutodeskReferenceManagerprovidestoolstolistreferencedfilesinselecteddrawingsandtomodifythesavedreferencepathswithoutopeningthedrawingfilesinAutoCAD.WithReferenceManager,drawingswithunresolvedreferencescanbeeasilyidentifiedandfixed.
ReferenceManagerisastand-aloneapplicationthatyoucanaccessfromtheAutodeskprogramgroupunderProgramsintheStartmenu(Windows).

Overview
WhenAutoCADdrawingfilesortheexternalfilesthattheyreferencearerelocated,useReferenceManagertomodifythereferencefilepathssavedinthedrawings.
OrganizationoftheReferenceManagerApplicationWindow
TheReferenceManagerwindowisdividedintotwopanes.Theleftpanedisplaysatreeviewofthedrawingsyouselectandtheexternalfilesthattheyreference.
Thetreeviewhelpsyoufindandloadcontentintotherightpane,calledtheReferencelist.TheReferencelistdisplaysalistofreferencesfromwhichyoucanselectandeditsavedreferencepathinformation.
SummaryoftheProcesstoChangeSavedReferencePaths
Theprocesstochangesavedreferencepathsfollowsthesestages:
1. MakesurealldrawingsthatyouplantoworkwithareclosedandthattheirWindowsAttributepropertiesarenotsettoRead-only.ReferenceManagerdoesnotchangesavedreferencepathsinanyopendrawingsordrawingsthatareread-only.
2. Adddrawingsandfoldersofdrawingstothetreeview.(Youcaneditthepathsoffilesreferencedbythedrawingsonthislist.)

Limitations
ReferenceManagerdoesnotcurrentlysupportallfilesreferencedbydrawings.Unsupportedreferencesincludetextfontsnotassociatedwithatextstyle,OLElinks,hyperlinks,databasefilelinks,PMPfiles,andexternalreferencestoURLsontheWeb.IfReferenceManagerencountersanxreftoaURL,itreportsthereferenceas"notfound."
Note EditedpathsforTrueTypefontsarenotsaved.AutoCADalwayssearchesforTrueTypefontsintheWindowsFontsfolder.

SelectDrawingFilesandFolders
Selectthedrawingfilestobeaddedtothetreeviewlistbyusingadialogboxorbydraggingdrawingfilesandfoldersintothetreeview.Oncedrawingsareaddedtothetreeviewlist,youcaneditthepathsofanyfilesreferencedinthosedrawings.
UsingtheAddDrawingsdialogbox,youcanselectdrawingfilesindividuallyorbyusingtheSHIFTandCTRLkeysasyouwoulddoinWindowsExplorer.Youcanalsodragdrawingsintothetreeviewlistfromyourdesktop,fromprojectfolders,andfromWindowsExplorer.Youcanremoveasingledrawingoralldrawingsfromthetreeviewlist.
Iftwodrawingswiththesamenamearelistedinthetreeview,itmeansthattheyarelocatedindifferentfoldersorhavedifferentsavedpaths.
Note Ifyouaddadrawingthathasalreadybeenaddedtothetreeview,thedrawingisnotreloadedintoReferenceManager.Ifyouneedtoupdatethetreeview,removethedrawingbeforeaddingitagain.
DrawingsThatContainXrefs
Whenyouadddrawingsthatcontainxrefs,ReferenceManagercanautomaticallyaddallreferenceddrawingstothetreeviewlistasanoption.DuringanAddDrawingsoperation,ReferenceManagerdisplaysadialogboxgivingyoutheoptiontoaddthexrefs,oryoucansetanoptionintheReferenceManagerOptionsdialogbox.
Iconsfornestedxrefsaregrayedoutwhenthehostdrawingisnotaddedtothetreeview.Toaddthehostdrawing,double-clickagrayedouticontodisplaytheAddDrawingsdialogbox.
OpenorRead-OnlyDrawings
ItispossibletoaddadrawingtothetreeviewlistevenifthedrawingfileisopenorissettoRead-only.Inthatcase,however,nopathchangestothedrawingareapplied,andtheDetailsdialogboxandtheReferenceManagerlogfileconfirmthatnochangeshavebeenmadetothedrawingfile.Noalertmessageisdisplayedwhenyouattempttoaddadrawingthatisread-onlybecausethestatusofadrawingfilecanbechangedevenafterthedrawinghasbeenaddedinReferenceManager.Thus,beforebeginningaReferenceManagersession,itisimportanttomakesurethatalldrawingfilesareavailableforediting.
Note WhentheReferenceManagerisintheprocessofaddingthedrawingsthatyouselected,clickingStopcancelstheoperationafterthecurrentdrawingisadded.

ThetreeviewintheleftpaneofReferenceManagerprovidesahierarchicallistofreferencesinthedrawingsthatyouaddedtothetreeviewlist.Youcancontrolthedisplaystyleofthetreeview,andyoucanclicktheplus(+)orminus(-)signstoexpandorcollapseitemsinthetreeviewcallednodes.
ThetwotypesoftreevieworganizationareListbyDrawingandListbyReferenceType.ListbyDrawingdisplaysahierarchicallistofnodesorganizedbydrawingfiles.ListbyReferenceTypedisplaysahierarchicallistofnodesorganizedaccordingtothedifferenttypesofreferences.
Note Drawingfilesarelistedalphabeticallybytheirfullpathnamesevenwhenonlythedrawingnameisdisplayed.
Youcanexpandandcollapsethenodesinthetreeviewtolistthereferencesthat
theycontain.WhatyouselectfromthetreeviewlistdetermineswhatisdisplayedintheReferencelist:
Ifthehighest-levelnodeisselected,allreferencesaredisplayed.
Ifadrawingisselected,onlyreferencesinthatdrawingaredisplayed.
IfareferencetypeisselectedintheListbyReferenceTypemode,allreferencesofthattypearedisplayedfromalldrawingscurrentlyinthetreeview.
Ifareferenceisselected,anynestedreferencesaredisplayed.
Ifthelowest-leveliteminareferencehierarchyisselected,thatreferenceisdisplayedintheReferencelist.
Note WithListbyReferenceType,referencesaredisplayedonlyonce,regardlessofhowmanydrawingsusethatreference.
Youcanselectandremoveanydrawingfromthetreeviewlist,includingtemplatedrawings(.dwt)andstandardsdrawings(.dws)aswellasregularAutoCADdrawings(.dwg).
DrawingsThatContainXrefs
Severaladditionalfeaturesareavailableinthetreeviewfordrawingsthathavenestedxrefs.
ReferenceManagerusesiconsinthetreeviewthathelpyoufinddrawingsthatcontainxrefswithpathsthatcannotbelocated.Incertaincomplexsituations,xrefswithpathproblemsmaynotbelistedintheReferencelistbutwillbelistedinthetreeview.
ReferenceManagerprovidesanoptionwhenaddingdrawingstothetreeviewtoaddallthedrawings'nestedxrefsautomatically.Thissavestimeifyouneedtoeditthepathsofnestedxrefs.
ReferenceManagermimicsthedisplaybehaviorofAutoCADwhenxrefoverlaysarenestedindrawings.AnyxrefsnestedinxrefoverlaysarelistedthesamewaythatAutoCADdisplaysthem.IfanxrefoverlayisnestedmorethanoneleveldeepinanAutoCADdrawing,anyxrefattachedtothexrefoverlayisnotlistedintheReferenceManagertreeview.
Note ItisrecommendedthatyoudonotuseAutoCADtoeditthepathsofxrefsthatarenestedmorethanoneleveldeeperthanthecurrentdrawingfile.ReferenceManagerisaconvenienttooltorestorethexrefpathinformationinthesedrawings.

WithReferenceManager,youcanchangesavedreferencepathstoanabsolute(fullyspecified)pathortoarelative(partiallyspecified)path.Youcanalsostripoutallsavedpathinformationbysavingareferencepathasanemptyfield.Inthiscase,AutoCADresolvesthereferenceusingthesupportfilesearchpathorinformationsavedinthecurrentprofileorprojectname.
Whennopathinformationissavedwiththeattachedexternalreference,thefollowingsearchisinitiatedintheordershown:

ReferenceManagerusestheidenticalsearchpathrulesasthecurrentversionofAutoCAD.
LocateandCorrectUnresolvedReferences
Tolocateallunresolvedreferences,addasetofdrawingstothetreeviewlist,andthenscanthetreeviewforbrokendrawingicons.ChecktheReferencelistforeachbrokendrawingtofindwhichreferencesareunresolved.Inthefollowingillustration,drawing1_abc.dwgisbroken.Itreferencesanxref,1_q.dwg,whichisunresolved.
Inthetreeview,onlyxrefsdisplaytheNotFoundicon(shownwithanexclamationpointintheillustration).AllotherunresolvedreferencesmustbeidentifiedintheReferencelist.Drawingscontainingxrefsthatarefoundinadifferentlocationthanspecifiedintheirsavedreferencepathsarenotdisplayedasbroken.
ApplyPathChanges
Afteryouchangeoneormoresavedreferencepaths,useApplytosavethechangestothedrawingfiles.OnlythereferenceswiththepenciliconintheStatuscolumnoftheReferencelistareaffectedbyApply.
OnceyouuseApply,theupdateddrawingfilesaresavedinthecurrentdrawingfileformat.Abackupdrawingfile(.bak)isalsocreatedorupdated.
Afteryouapplypathchanges,adialogboxreportsthenumberofsuccessfulchangesmade.YoucanclickDetailstoseeacompletelistofthechangesthatweremade.
PathChangeFailures
AfteryouuseApply,theDetailsdialogboxthatisaccessedfromtheSummarydialogboxwillreportanyfailures.Failurescanbecausedbyoneofthefollowing:
IfadrawingfileisopenedinAutoCADafteryouaddthedrawingtothetreeviewinReferenceManagerbutbeforeyouapplyanypathchanges,thedrawingfilewillbelockedbyAutoCAD,andanypathchangesthatyouspecifyinReferenceManagerwillnotbesavedtothedrawingfile.
Ifadrawingfileismovedtoadifferentfolderafteryouaddthedrawingtothetreeviewbutbeforeyouapplyanypathchanges,ReferenceManagerwillnotfindthedrawingfileinitsnewlocation,andanypath
changesthatyouspecifywillnotbesavedtothefile.
IfadrawingfileissettoRead-only,anypathchangesthatyouspecifyinReferenceManagerwillnotbesavedtothedrawingfile.
IftheDetailsdialogboxreportsanyfailures,useApplyagainafteryouremedytheproblemwiththedrawingfile.

ByReference
Displaysalistofreferencetypessavedinthedrawingsthathavebeenaddedtothetreeview.Eachreferencetypecanbeexpandedtodisplayalistofthefilesofthattype.
ReferenceList
Displaysapaneontherightwiththefilereferencesfromtheitemselectedinthetreeview.IfAllDrawingsorByReferenceisselectedinthetreeview,allreferencesaredisplayedintheReferencelist.Informationabouteachreferenceisdisplayedunderseveralcolumns.
Type
Identifiesthetypeofreferencefile.Supportedreferencetypesincludexrefattachments,xrefoverlays,textfonts,plotstyles,plotconfigurations,standards,images,andshapes.
Status
Identifieswhetherareferencewasfoundusingthepathsavedinthedrawing(Resolved),apathdifferentfromtheonesavedinthedrawing(FoundinDifferentLocation),orwhetherthereferencecouldnotbelocated(NotFound).
FileName
Displaysthenameandextensionofthereferencedfile;forexample,txt.shx.
ReferenceName
Displaysthenameusedforthereferenceinthedrawing.Forexample,Standardisthedefaultnameassignedtotxt.shx.
SavedPath
Thepaththatiscurrentlysavedinthedrawingforthereference.IfSavedPathisblank,itmeansthatnopathwassavedforthereferenceandAutoCADwillsearchforitusinganassignedsearchpath.
FoundPath
ThepathwherethereferencedfilewillbefoundbyAutoCAD.
HostDrawing
Thedrawingfilethatcontainsthereference.
HostVersion
ThedatabaseversionoftheAutoCADdrawingthatcontainsthereference.SeveralreleasesofAutoCADmayusethesamedatabaseversion.
