The introduction of HattersleyAutoflow (automatic balancing) valves gives users and specifiers a major alternative to traditionalcommissioning products.Autoflow offers a radical cost effectivemethod of regulating hot and chilledwater systems. It is available in DZRcopper alloy in sizes 1/2 to 2in withthreaded ends and ductile iron in sizesfrom 21/2 to 14in (65 to 350mm).

The flow device is a highperformance automatic flowregulator
■ It regulates within a very lowtolerance and offers a wide flowrate range.
■ The regulating element is a pistonwith variable side orificesaugmented in some cases by anend port for the fluid passage.
■ The piston moves in response tovarying differential pressures and isopposed by a helical springcalibrated for the service.
How They Work

Pressure below the control range
Differential pressure below theminimum to activate the piston. Pistonis fully extended and acts as a fixedorifice with a Kv of 0.71 design flowfor standard 17 to 200 kPa cartridge.
Pressure above the control range
Piston is now fully compressed withonly the end port, when included,exposed. Regulator functions as fixedorifice and will react to increasedpressure differential with increasedflow in accordance with the formula:flow = Kv ÖDP. Fixed Kv of the valveis now 0.18 design flow for standard17 to 200 kPa cartridge.
Pressure within the control range
Piston now responds to changes indifferential pressure by repositioningthe variable side orifices to maintaindesign flow.At approximately 50% ofcontrol range, the consolidated sideport now handles all flow through thevariable orifice.The Kv is variable inthis range and is a function of pistonposition.

How to Specify Hattersley Autoflow Valves
Automatic balancing valves shall have replaceable cartridges with flow ratesdetermined at the factory.The flow cartridge shall be stainless steel or nickelfinish. Deep drawn metal cartridges are not acceptable. Each cartridge shall becoded to indicate specific flow rate duty.The flow cartridge shall be 17 to 200kPa rated as standard. Rating 35 to 400 kPa available as option.
1/2 to 2in sizes shall be available with two body types, standard Y-pattern anduniversal Y-pattern with integral isolating ball valve and union connection. Bodiesshall be in DZR copper alloy with pressure tapping ports and shall be fitted withcolour coded DuSeal test points. Optional extended stem shall be available withuniversal type to allow for insulation. End connections shall be threaded asstandard. 1/2 to 2in sizes shall have optional strainer facility in lieu of flow cartridge.

65 to 350mm sizes shall have a ductile iron wafer body and be fitted withcolour coded DuSeal test points and drain plug.

Above this size a multi-cartridgepermutation is used to obtain thedesired flow rate.
The table immediately below indicatesthe minimum and maximum flow ratesfor each size from 150 to 350mm (6to 14in). Flow rates increase inincrements of approximately 0.32l/s
