Automotive Technology Students Win at Northampton Community College Polytech congratulates Tyler Golis and Dan Bowlby, Automotive Technologies students, for placing third at the Northampton Community College Skills Contest on March 11 th . Tyler and Dan each received a $2,000 Northampton Community College scholarship, and a Snap-On ¼” Drive Set. To qualify for this high level competition, the students took an exam in January and out of 200 students, they were among the top 12 that made it to the finals. The students worked as a team, diagnosing the vehicular faults at six workstations in engine repair, electrical, PA state inspection, brake measurement, check engine light, and service information. With this competition behind them, Dan and Tyler are now focusing on the Ford AAA competition, which will be held at the Monmouth Mall on May 7 th . The students will have 90 minutes to diagnose preset faults in a 2015 Ford Fiesta. They have been training on a Ford Fiesta that was donated for this purpose by Ditschman/Flemington Ford. If the students place 1 st at this competition, they will go on an all-expense paid trip to Dearborn, Michigan to compete and represent New Jersey at the nationals. “These competitions allow us to learn more by using our skills as we are receiving additional diagnosis and repair training with Mr. Scheuermann. Each competition gives us a greater understanding of what to look for as we progress to each event”, said Dan. Tyler and Dan are also looking forward to participating in the CARS Program in May. This is a one-week internship and mentoring program where the students work a 40-hour week at a Flemington Car & Truck Country dealership directly in the shop with a mentor. The students are then evaluated by their mentors, graded on their skills and workmanship, and have the opportunity to win awards. After graduation in the spring, Tyler and Dan will both pursue the automotive field with plans to specialize in diesel mechanics and performance. April 2015 Newsletter
