Case study Amsterdam (BCG, 2017)
=> # km’s travelled: more than doubled compared to base case scenario 2050
?: shift from public transport & bike to autonomous vehicles
=> negative for cyclists & pedestrians: more traffic, less space for the less number
Autonomous vehicles: Heaven on earth?

Challenges towards infrastructure are massive:
1.How to deal with the capacity problem?
2.How to deal with the complexity of introducing a new mode in the existing road network?
3. How to deal with the autonomous shuttles in a public transport network?

Autonomous vehicles: Solving Capacity problem
1. An improved road network management
▪ Separate lanes for different modes: cycles paths, sidewalks
▪ Crossings managed by traffic lights
▪ Dedicated routes for Autonomous vehicles
2. Reorganising the public space
▪ Transforming parking space towards additional capacity (US: 8
parkings for each car)
3. Road design
▪ Has to be based on level 0 (zero based automation)
▪ When level 5 fully implemented => smaller lanes, decreasing safety
distances

Autonomous vehicles: Complexity of modes
▪ Measures to avoid unallowed crossing of cyclist & pedestrians (behavior adaptation)
▪ Connected infrastructure to facilitate AV (V2I, C-ITS, traffic lights
▪ Creation of transport hubs : a multi-mode interchange, offering an alternative sustainable travel choice for a wide range of trips and at all time

Autonomous vehicles: Public transport
▪ Robustness check of PT-investments towards AV(no-regret measures)
▪ Driverless shuttles for first and last-mileconnections
▪ Kiss&Ride/mobility hubs
▪ Prioritizing high-demand corridors
▪ New criteria for public transit investments

Recommendations
▪ Execute Pilot tests with increased complexity & interaction of modes
▪ Require or incentivize alternatives to driving
▪ Certificating roads
▪ Flexible road design (p.e. variable lane width)
▪ Robustness check of PT-investments
▪ Implementation: Less complex (highways) towards roads with more complex interaction
