High-brow luxury sedan buyers who don’t want to be stodgy or predictable have a newly updated choice, the 2011 Audi A8.

Audi’s flagship four door isn’t just longer, wider and more powerful than before. Its new exterior styling is arguably the most distinc-tive and sporty of any exec-utive-level luxury sedan on the market.

The 2011 A8’s well-craft-ed interior also has features any tech-savvy business person will love, such as a touch pad where a driver can, with a finger, write let-ters and numbers that are recognized by the onboard computer as a phone num-ber or a destination. The idea is to keep driver eyes on the road ahead and not down on some knob or on-board menu.

And coming later in the model year is a Google search connection to the A8’s navigation system that will allow maps to be dis-played as Google Earth im-ages, as if a driver were at his or her laptop.

The best part is that all the interior creature comforts and technology as well as the weighty solidity of the two-ton A8 don’t detract from a car that’s also speedy, spirited to drive and capable on twisty roads.

Just don’t expect the new-ly updated A8 to be inexpen-sive or fuel thrifty.

The base A8 comes with a 372-horsepower V-8 and has a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, of $78,925.

This is up 4.7 percent from the $75,375 starting retail price of a 2010 A8.

Meantime, the longer-length A8L, which accounts for the majority of A8 mod-

els sold in the United States because it has an extra roomy back seat for titans of industry who are often chauffeured around town, starts at $84,875 now, up 7.1 percent from the $79,225 starting retail price for a 2010 model.

The 2011 A8 has a signifi-cantly higher starting price than the competing 2011 Lexus LS 460, whose start-ing MSRP, including des-tination charge, is $66,255. The LS 460 has a 380-horsepower V-8. The 2011 Mercedes-Benz S550 with 382-horsepower V-8, starts at $94,525, and the 2011 BMW 750i with 400-horse-power V-8 starts at $83,875.

With a nod toward grow-ing consumer sensitivity to fuel economy, Audi officials note the 2011 A8 has better fuel mileage than its prede-cessor, even though the A8’s

4.2-liter V-8 engine now generates more horsepower and torque.

Specifically, the federal government gave the new A8 a rating of 17 miles per gallon in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway, up from the 16/23-mpg rating for the 2010 A8.

Much of the improvement comes from the introduction of a new, eight-speed au-tomatic transmission in the 2011 A8.

But premium gasoline still is required, and both Lexus and Mercedes offer trendy, gas-oline-electric hybrid versions of their large, luxury sedans, while Audi does not.

This didn’t stop the new, jet black A8 test car from getting a lot of attention, partic-ularly from young professionals who said their career-climbing hopes include being able to own an Audi like this someday. Gaz-ing wistfully at the A8’s striking new light-emitting diode headlamps, they admitted they wanted an A8 right now.

I never heard this from young profes-sionals when I drove a more conservatively styled Lexus LS 460.

And because the A8’s sales are historically lower than those of the better-known Mer-cedes S-Class, BMW 7-Series and Lexus LS models, buyers of the new A8 can find their cars stand out in the crowd at the country club.

The A8, however, is not a car you would want to slip into and just drive away.

There’s just so much information avail-able onboard and so much tailoring that can be done to make the car fit a driver’s tastes.

For example, in the test car, there were 22 adjustments for the massaging and ven-tilated driver seat, and the optional — for $6,300 — Bang & Olufsen audio system could be tuned just so.

It also took time to understand the layers of menus the car offered through its large-knobbed Multimedia Interface (MMI) sys-tem. Audi tries to make it more organized via graphics that sort out the various menus plus an extra-big display screen that rises from the top of the dashboard and discreetly disappears when the car is turned off.

But in all those menus, I couldn’t find the air pressures for each tire, even though I did get a warning that the left rear tire on the test car had low pressure.

Eventually, by kneeling in low-tech style on the pavement next to the tire, I located the nail that was deflating the tire. But this generously equipped sedan didn’t have a full-size spare to replace it with — only a limited-use spare.

I had already driven the A8 rigorously and noted its competence on mountain twisties, its quiet coddling of drivers and passengers in city traffic and its forceful acceleration.

The car’s 4.2-liter, double overhead cam, direct injection V-8 can generate 328 foot-pounds of torque at a good mid-range 3,500 rpm, so the A8 responds quickly and smoothly with power.

The zero-to-60-miles-an-hour sprint reportedly takes just over 5 seconds, which is notable for a car this size. The tester had optional sport air suspension, which helped manage the car’s handling and shifting of mass as I darted around one curve after an-other.

The 20-inch tires, all properly inflated at the time, gripped the pavement well, and brakes were strong and steady.

The test car had variable-ratio steering, so it needed some heft at the steering wheel at higher speeds to adjust direction. But in parking lots, the steering was light, for easy maneuvering.

2011 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI

Driving to No. 1 with Clean DieselVolkswagen CEO Martin Win-

terkorn recently said the company is on track to overtake Toyota Mo-tor Company as the world’s largest automaker. In the first nine months of 2010, VW did beat Toyota’s full-year profit goal for the same peri-od — $5.23 billion vs. $4.16 billion – and the German executive said that with strong sales growth in China and the U.S., VW could sur-pass Toyota in worldwide sales and profitably by 2018.

One vehicle poised to help Volk-swagen achieve its lofty target is the Clean Diesel 2011 Jetta SportWagen TDI.

A sportwagon engineered with German styling and electronics and designed in a versatile, stylish, fun-to-drive package for under $25,000 (base), TDI appeals to “green-con-scious” drivers by means of 2.0-liter TDI clean diesel engine that utilizes one of the most efficient alterna-tive fuels readily available in all 50 states — a biodiesel blend known as B5, which consists of 5 percent biodiesel and 95 percent petroleum diesel. Additionally, Jetta’s TDI trim has been EPA rated at 30mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway.

The TDI acronym is short for “Turbocharged Direct Injection,” an innovative engine design that deliv-ers a combination of performance, fuel economy and low emissions.

On the intake side of the equa-tion, all TDI engines use a com-puter-controlled injection system that sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber at very high pressures that help promote more complete combustion. On the ex-haust side, Jetta TDI models use a self-cleaning filter that traps and periodically burns off nitrous oxides (NOx) and particulates.

Lean and sporty demeanorAttractive as it is conservation-

oriented, Jetta’s SportWagen’s all-new front end adds a leaner look to the model’s already sporty nature.

A narrow double-bar grille sits just above the bumper, giving the SportWagen a wider appearance, accented by minimal fender flares working in concert with a pair of angled halogen headlamps held in blacked-out housings. The lower

portion of the front fascia has been narrowed and widened for a sleeker look, and black window trim gives the vehicle an upscale demeanor. An integrated roof rack comes as standard on all models to increase the SportWagen’s versatile storage abilities.

Weighing in at 3,283 pounds, the Jetta Sportwagon TDI measures 179.4 inches long, 70.1 inches wide and 59.2 inches high on a 101.5-inch wheelbase with 5.4 inches of ground clearance.

Roomy and loadedMy platinum gray metallic test

ride’s exterior was accented by a Cornsilk Beige Leatherette interior that measured front head room of 38.4 inches, front shoulder room of 54.8 inches and front leg room a comfortable 41.1 inches. Rear seat measurements are headroom: 38.1; shoulder room 53.1 and leg room a tight 35.5.

Cabin accouterments included air conditioning, cruise control, an AM/FM/CD stereo system with MP3/CD readability, eight speakers (upgraded to 10 speakers in an op-tional add-on), an auxiliary input, ergonomic HVAC controls, eight-way adjustable support front seats, a three-spoke steering wheel with tilt-and telescope capabilities, Bluetooth® mobile phone connec-tivity, trip computer and a leath-er-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake.

Performance and efficiencyOne of the big stories associated

with the Jetta SportWagen is its power plant.

TDI muscles up with an alumi-num alloy 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder in-line engine with sequential multi-point fuel injection and digital electronic ignition that delivers

140hp and 236 lbs-ft of torque (the standard in-line 5 engine provides 170hp and 177 lbs-ft of torque on regular unleaded gas).

The front wheel drive, manual transmission vehicle averaged 33 mpg during mixed-use tests, and while finding clean diesel fuel was problematic, the ride was respon-sive and quiet for a diesel.

Some test results have come back claiming a zero to 60 mph time under 9 seconds, but my test ride, prepared as any standard car you would drive off a car lot, and tested in normal conditions not tailored for hotshoe times, came in at 9.6 seconds and a 17.4-second quarter-mile.

Acceleration at speed is labored at times, but you generally get good pop when you need it. Steer-ing is better than average for the segment – not sports car like, but better than most wagons, thanks

to TDI’s rack and pinion electro-mechanical power assisted steer-ing.

The enhanced all-steel mono-cocque chassis utilizes inde-pendent McPherson struts, coil springs, telescopic shock absorb-ers and integrated stabilizer bar up front and a multilink rear suspen-sion with coil springs, telescopic gas pressurized shock absorbers, stabilizer bar for smooth sailing and a passenger-comforting ride, while the standard anti-lock brak-ing system with electronic brake pressure distribution supplies at-tentive stopping.

Safety measures include front, thorax, and side curtain protec-tion airbags for both the driver and front passenger, as well as side curtain protection airbags for rear passengers. Jetta’s electronic dif-ferential lock and electronic sta-bility control automatically brakes

individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces engine power as needed to help maintain direc-tional control.

The 2011 Jetta SportWagen TDI has a base price of $24,730. With $2,900 in options and a $770 desti-nation charge, my test vehicle had a drive-off sticker $28,400. Additions included the Premium Package for $2,550 (power sliding panoramic sunroof, navigational system with 5-inch screen, media interface and 17-inch Porto alloy wheels) and rear side airbags for $350.
