If you envy folks who can enjoy autumn’s scenery with the top down, you’ll be positively jealous of anyone behind the wheel of BMW’s 2011 top-level Z4 roadster.

The 2011 Z4 sDrive35is boasts the most horsepower — 335 — of new-model, reg-ular-production convert-ibles with fewer than eight cylinders. The engine also generates quick low-end “oomph” with peak torque of 332 foot-pounds coming on by 1,500 rpm and con-tinuing to 4,500 rpm — a significant range that makes this Z4 forceful in both city and highway traffic.

Zero to 60 miles per hour in a surprising 4.7 seconds, to be exact.

With a heavy, substantial feel — thanks in part to a re-tractable hardtop roof — and sexy styling, this Z4 pro-vides a distinctly different kind of roadster ride.

But it sure is pricey. Start-ing manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price, includ-ing destination charge, is $46,875 for a 2011 Z4 with regular 255-horsepower, six-cylinder engine and manual transmission. With auto-matic transmission, the 2011 Z4 starts at $48,250, and the uplevel Z4 that’s the high-light of the lineup — with the 335-horsepower, twin-turbo six-cylinder — starts at $52,775.

By comparison, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLK with 228-horsepower six cylin-der and manual transmis-sion starts at $48,525.

Not fuel efficientNeedless to say, the Z4

isn’t fuel efficient. The three-liter, double overhead cam, twin-turbocharged, inline six-cylinder, gasoline engine is used here for only a two-seater. Yet, the car is rated at just 17 miles a gallon in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway. That’s us-

ing premium gasoline, too. And during my test drive in the city and on the highway, I wound up in the 19.5 mpg range, meaning I needed to stop well before 300 miles to fill up the tank.

Several sport utility ve-hicles, including the gaso-line-powered Mercedes ML-Class sport utility vehi-cle with six-cylinder engine, have higher fuel mileage.

Ah, but it’s the way you travel in the Z4 that appeals.

Passenger and driver sit low in the car, in typical roadster fashion. It’s not as fun these days as it was in the heydays of roadsters, decades ago, because to-day’s roads carry so many pickups and SUVs that ob-scure roadster views. I even looked up from the Z4 to see the top of the trunk lid on a Ford Taurus.

The Z4 sDrive35is starts up with a throaty sound and keeps it going during accel-eration.

The test car passed others swiftly. With just a nudge of the accelerator pedal, the car sped up, and turbo lag was negligible. I had to moni-tor the speedometer all the time, because the Z4 tester crept up to higher speeds easily. It’s a car that doesn’t want to be second or third in line or mired in traffic. There’s too much power for

that kind of travel; it’s hard to moderate your speed.

On the roadOpen roads proved to

be the best showcase ar-eas. On straightaways, the Z4’s power propelled the car strongly and forcefully. Passing on two-lane roads was a quick maneuver and didn’t require long distances of planning and anxiety. On curvy mountain roads, the car carved up the switch-backs. But the rear end had a way of stepping out if the driver was going too fast.

Drivers tailor their ride with the push of a button, selecting normal, sport or sport-plus mode for slightly stiffer ride and shift pattern changes in the transmis-sion. And on the test car, the adjustments made elec-tronically in these different modes were noticeable.

Paddle shifters at the steering wheel worked well for quick shifts. But the variable speed electric pow-er steering had an artificial feel at times.

The ride can be noisy, be-cause of wind noise when the top is down and road noise from the sizable, run-flat tires.

The Z4 can’t fit a spare tire into the back, because room

is needed to stow the hard top when it’s down. So, stor-age space is sparse. Indeed, even with the car’s hard roof in place atop the vehicle, there’s just 8 cubic feet of trunk space. With the roof down, much of this is taken up by the hardtop, and items

must be rather narrow and soft-sided to fit comfortably in the trunk.

The car looks best and feels like it has a roomier interior when the roof is off the car. The hard top is power op-erated, so there’s little for a driver to do but listen to some whirring motors and watch the stacking of metal

roof pieces. It takes 20 sec-onds.

The Z4 has much standard safety equipment, including antilock brakes, brake fade compensation, traction con-trol, electronic stability con-trol and side air bags.

Be careful when getting into and out of the Z4; doors are longer than expected.

2010 Honda CR-V

Honda perfects the soft-road crossoverWhen Honda chose the

CR-V as its compact cross-over SUV in 1996, it filled a niche in the soft-road utility market for the Japanese car builder.

As to what CR-V stands for, some Honda sales litera-ture has called it a “Compact Recreational Vehicle”, but other official Honda mate-rial references the crossover as a “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle.”

Still others in Honda mar-keting say the initials mean nothing and are a market-able assortment of letters as are the initials in its sis-ter company Acura’s RDX and MDX. To them, finding words that fit the initials is a marketing afterthought.

The eighth-best-selling vehicle in America in 2010 is produced in East Lib-erty, Ohio, and nearing the end of its third generation, the 2010 CR-V adds modest refinements and upgrades to its exterior and interior, with additional power and the promise of better fuel economy.

Enhancements for 2010On the outside, CR-V re-

ceives a freshened front fascia with a new horizon-tal single-slat chrome grille and honeycomb-designed lower front grille, new front bumper, re-sculpted hood, revised taillights and a redesigned rear bumper shape. The previous model featured a double slat-style cross bar.

Interior improvements focus on new features and functionality. Comfort is enhanced with improved seat fabrics, and wider driver and front-passenger armrests.

Visually, information dis-play backlighting in the gauges is blue instead of the previous black for better visibility, and electronical-ly, and Bluetooth® Hands-FreeLink® is now included

on models equipped with the available Honda Satel-lite-Linked Navigation Sys-tem™.

Under the hood, the 2010 CR-V has moved up its horsepower from 166 to 180 and gas mileage is rated at an increase of one mpg.

Rounded exteriorMoving back to the ex-

terior, CR-V fits the com-pact sports-ute segment with measurements of 179.3 inches in length, 66.1 inch-es in height and 71.6 inch-es in width on a 103-1-inch wheelbase with a ground clearance of 6.7 inches. Weighing in at a light (for an SUV) 3413 lbs., this Honda crossover carries its weight with a 58/42 front/rear dis-tribution.

Architecturally, CR-V displays a rounded overall shape that moves it away from perceived SUV slab sides. The CR-V’s unit-body construction makes exten-sive use of high-strength steel (58 percent) to save weight and create a high-ri-

gidity body structure, which significantly contributes to the vehicle’s ride quality, safety performance and up-scale presence.

Power and performanceCR-V’s power and perfor-

mance come from an alumi-num alloy 2.4-liter inline-4 engine that produces 180 hp and 161 lbs-ft of torque. Coupled to a 5-speed auto-matic transmission, the ve-hicle is available in FWD and 4WD and is EPA rated at 28 mpg in highway driving and 21 mpg in the city. I found those figures to be optimis-tic, as week of mixed-use testing only garnered an av-erage of 20.1 mpg.

On the track, CR-V test-ed well enough, managing a smooth and steady 9.2 sec-onds for a zero-to-60 gallop and a 17-flat quarter-mile.

On the road, acceleration is good, but a bit hesitant; quick turns exhibit some body roll and top wobble; and the ride is not refined due to a stiff suspension from front MacPherson struts, coil springs and anti-roll bar and multilink rear with coil springs and anti-roll bar.

Steering is a bit boatlike with a degree or two of play before the system engages.

Off road, well, CR-V is re-ally a family utility vehicle designed for cruising around town, taking the kids on a highway trip with the car-go bays filled with camping gear, hockey equipment or suitcases filled with clothes.

It really is not a bona fide off-road vehicle, but is a soft-roader that can smooth out some mudholes but is best left to navigate macad-am rather than rocky trails.

Spacious interiorIn the cabin, sightlines are

excellent from pillar to pil-lar. The upright instrumen-tation is easy to see and read and the confines are non-

confining. Spacious with interior

headroom of 38.9 inches up front and 38.5 inches in row two, legroom of 41.3 and 38.5 and shoulder room of 56.9 and 56.0, the driving experi-ence is comfortable with the exception of a fair degree of road noise present.

Interior accouterments in-clude climate control system with air filtration, back-up camera, a large flip-up LCD screen, keyless entry, tilt and telescopic steering column, cruise control, power win-dows with auto-up/down driver’s window, power door and tailgate locks, AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers and fuel economy meter.

From a safety perspective, CR-V scores well with per-fect 5-star crash ratings for frontal and side impacts and 4 of 5 in rollover tests. Safe-ty systems include the Ad-vanced Compatibility Engi-neering™ body structure; Vehicle Stability Assist™; and a pedestrian safety de-

sign in the front of the ve-hicle.

A d d i t i o n a l s ta n d a rd equipment includes side-curtain airbags with a roll-over sensor; front side air-bags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detec-tion System; active front seat head restraints; an anti-lock braking system with Electronic Brake Distribu-tion and Brake Assist; and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

Base priced at $25,095 fo r t h e C R-V EX 4 W D trim, my test vehicle came

in with a final sticker of $29,070 including moon-roof and upgraded elec-t ro n i c s, b u t t h e C R-V ranges from $21,545 base to about $39,000 plus $780 destination charges.

The 2010 Honda CR-V … whatever the initials mean, it is one classy road vehicle.
