As you may remember at the start of the year we launched our partnership with CLIC Sargent – the UK’s leading charity for helping children and young people with cancer. I’m very proud of the hard work and initiative that many of our colleagues have put into a number of events this year, and we’ve dedicated a significant amount of this issue to tell you more about what we’ve been doing. On a personal note, as part of the charity launch, each of our Group’s senior executive team were set a challenge and mine was to complete a half iron man. I’m pleased to say that I completed the challenge – a 1.2 mile swim, 56 miles on a bike and then a half marathon – in Norfolk in July, and managed to raise over £2500 towards our Group target of £1m. You may also have heard in the news that we will be undertaking a full length runway refurbishment project during November and December 2016, to be completed over seven consecutive weekends, a UK first for airport runway refurbishment projects, meaning that the airport will be closed to all traffic for 48 hours each weekend. The project will see around 360 workers every weekend laying 50,000 tonnes of specially formulated material across 150,000m 2 in total and also replacing over 1200 lights on and around the area with LED lighting, which is more environmentally friendly. WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN EDITION OF COMMUNITY FLYER FOR 2016 On Sunday 27th November the airport will be holding a truly unique family sports event where members of the public can win their very own sporting medal, following Britain’s biggest Olympic medal win since 1908. The closure of the airport for runway maintenance only happens every 15 to 20 years and has paved the way for us to team up with Derby-based HUUB Events for a one off opportunity to take part in a 10k and 2k Family Run around the airport site. This unique family running event is ideal for people of all ages and abilities, and we hope to see many of you there. The course for both the 10k and 2k races has been carefully planned to give runners a unique experience in areas that would not be accessible if we were fully operational and with CLIC Sargent as the official charity this fantastic event will help raise money for a very worthy cause. Runners will register in the main airport terminal and then, starting at 10am, the 10k runners will be set off around the airport perimeter and around areas such as the airport fire station, which would normally only be seen by staff members. At 11.30 am the 2k race will start outside the terminal building and runners will run up to and around the fire station before returning back to the finish line. Teams of up to six people can also enter the 10k distance with the fastest four times combined together to find the fastest team for the Team Challenge trophy. WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN EDITION OF COMMUNITY FLYER FOR 2016

On Sunday 27th November the airport will be holding a truly unique family sports event where members of the public can win their very own sporting medal, following Britain’s biggest Olympic medal win since 1908.

The closure of the airport for runway maintenance only happens every 15 to 20 years and has paved the way for us to team up with Derby-based HUUB Events for a one off opportunity to take part in a 10k and 2k Family Run around the airport site. On Friday 20 May 2016 East Midlands Airport’s External Affairs Team took part in Give and Gain Day, the only global day of employee volunteering – supported by Business in the Community.

The team connected with Farnborough Academy in Clifton, Nottingham, and throughout the day delivered employability focussed workshops to the whole of Year 9, engaging over 150 students in interactive presentations. The sessions covered understanding job descriptions, writing personal statements, preparing for interviews as well information about jobs and careers at East Midlands Airport. We also gave the students an opportunity to interview each other which many students thoroughly enjoyed.

Here’s what some of the students said: The workshop has shown me how many different careers are available at the airport and all of the opportunities that are available. Thank you.I think this was a really good session to help prepare us for the future. It really helped me understand what sort of things to say in an interview.

Our colleagues had a great day volunteering at the Academy and found the experience very enjoyable and rewarding, as well as developing and enhancing presentation skills and confidence in working with young people.

EAST MIDLANDS AIRPORT TEAMS UP WITH ROCK CHOIR FOR CHARITY FUNDRAISERA spectacular and unique flash mob surprised passengers at East Midlands Airport in the early hours of Sunday 22nd May to help raise awareness and funds for the airport’s corporate charity, CLIC Sargent.

Rock Choir members from across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire preformed ‘A Little Respect’ by Erasure to the delight of passengers in the check in hall and then collected donations wearing wigs, to help raise awareness for the charity’s Wig Wednesday campaign on 25 May.

Working together with Rock Choir, who is a pioneering contemporary choir in the UK with over 20,000 members across the UK, the airport team managed to raise hundreds of pounds on the day and also on Wig Wednesday, which will go towards the £1m target the airport, along with the other airports in Manchester Airport Group, are aiming to raise.

The inaugural East Midlands Airport Charity Golf Day was held on 14 July 2016 at Morley Hayes Golf Club, with over 80 participants taking part and raising funds for the airport’s corporate charity, CLIC Sargent. The sun shone brightly and the golfers set off on their 18 holes with some fantastic drives and putting witnessed throughout the day.

Golfers of all abilities were playing, with some having never played golf before; however everyone finished the round and enjoyed themselves, especially during the on-course competition of how many keep-ups could be completed with a golf club. £2100 was raised throughout the course of the day, with a raffle and a silent auction raising a significant amount.

The day was finished off with dinner in the club house and a very humbling speech from CLIC Sargent’s Midlands Area Fundraising Manager Anna Finnegan and Andy Cliffe.

FLASH MOB AT EMA

Anna Finnegan, CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager said: This was such a unique and fun way to raise awareness for CLIC Sargent in the Midlands. The passengers were so surprised when it happened. A flight from East Midlands Airport to Berlin takes 1 hour 20 minutes, the same amount of travelling time that a parent could undertake in a day just to ensure that their child has cancer treatment at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham. We are very grateful to Rock Choir and East Midlands Airport for organising this and raising a fantastic amount of more for children and young people with cancer.
