ANGOLA — As the leaves turn color and chillier temperatures arrive on the scene, it signals the Autumn in Angola Fall Festival.

This year’s annual event will be held Friday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 28, around Angola’s downtown.

Last year, the event had two major changes, a different organizer — Go Angola Downtown Alliance — and name switch from Angola Fall Fest to Autumn in Angola Fall Festival. Go Angola took over running the annual event after the Angola Area Chamber of Commerce decided to change its focus to promoting member events.

Autumn in Angola continues with its varied flavor and diverse offerings to

bring folks to town to experience Angola.Lee Ann Snyder, Go Angola president,

said the focus in holding the event has always been to mix things up to avoid repetition. This year is no exception.

Entertainment for all ages, food, children’s activities, crafts and merchant vendors will dot the festival.

A classic car cruise-in will rumble into the city at 5 p.m. Friday to kick things off.

Saturday at 11 a.m. will be the grand arrival of President Lincoln on the Blue Room Sound Stage. Lincoln’s appearence is in conjunction with Civil War Days, which is held as part of Autumn in Angola at Commons Park (see related story).

Music of all types will roll into town starting with Elements from 5-9 p.m. Friday on the Blue Room Sound Main

Stage in the northeast quadrant of the Public Square. Saturday’s lineup on the same stage will be Brant Arnos acoustic music, 10-11 a.m.; Big Caddy Daddy, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Mike Conley acoustic music, 3-4:30 p.m.; and JFX, 5-9 p.m. Singer Ron Smith will perform on the Bent Fork Stage 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and also noon-2 p.m. Sunday.

Sunday’s music, also on the Blue Roon Sound Main Stage, will include Small Voice, 12-2:30 p.m.; and Rockin’ Products Kids Rock 2014, 3-4 p.m.

Saturday on the First Federal Kids Stage, local storyteller Lou Ann Homan will tell her tales of Hoosier root stories at noon. It will be followed by Silly Safaris at 1 p.m, sponsored by Troopers Youth Services.

Ridenour Acres will bring a challenging straw maze to the Fort Financial Family area Saturday between 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Bounce houses will also be set up for play at that same time.

For kids Sunday, the lineup will feature Marks Ark, 12:30-1:30 p.m and 3-4 p.m.; and Jim Barron Magic, 2-3 p.m., all on the First Federal Kids Stage.

Refreshments will be available in the Angola Moose Lodge’s beer tent between 4-11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and starting at noon Sunday.

Food courts, crafts, art and various vendors will peddle their wares from 5-8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The First Congregational United Church of Christ will hold its popular annual yard sale between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Autumnin Angola Fall Festival’s sponsors include: The Hair Center, Blue Room Sound, The Bent Fork Art Studio, Fort Financial Credit Union, Steuben County Tourism Bureau, Ridenour Acres, In a Flash Photographic Studio, KPC Media Group, A Wild Hare Antique Mall and First Federal Savings Bank of Angola.

Enjoy the AutumnThe Go Angola Downtown group has

been working diligently over the past several months to make sure the second Autumn in Angola festival is a huge success. Planning for this festival makes sure families are the main focus.

This year’s festival includes entertain-ment for everyone. You can view all of the action at Civil War Days at Commons Park. You will get to enjoy re-enactments of Civil War battles as well as experience a real feel of how our ancestors lived their daily lives during this period in our history. The Civil War Days group, based in Angola, has worked very hard to bring history to life.

Numerous activities, including a wide range of entertainment, will take place in the downtown, surrounding the Public

Square, where the bulk of Autumn in Angola activities take place.

We hope you enjoy Autumn in Angola. (This guide can also be found online at kpcnews.com.)

Civil War Days will be presented once again as part of the Autumn in Angola festival this weekend. File photo by Lou Ann Homan

ANGOLA — Angola Civil War Days and American History Fest will be held Sept. 26-28 in Commons Park.

Fridays are reserved for school children, who can tour the early American encamp-ments and displays and learn about life during the country’s settlement. The public can attend for free on Saturday, 9 a.m. to dark, and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Each year features a different Civil War battle, re-enacted by volunteers. This year’s battle is the Battle of the Crater, part of the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, on July 30, 1864.

Petersburg was an important railroad hub that supplied Richmond, and was held by the Confederate forces. One of the soldiers in Pennsylvania’s 48th Regiment Veteran Volunteer Infantry suggested blowing the enemy fort up by tunneling to it. The 48th regiment was made up of miners from Schuyhill County, Pennsyl-vania, led by mining engineer Lt. Col.

Henry C. Pleasants.They started digging June 25, 1864,

using cracker boxes for hand barrows with rudimentary shoring and ventilation. A fire was kept burning continuously at the entrance to the tunnel, covered by canvas, which forced warm air out through a wooden pipe and pulled fresh air through the tunnel. This kept them from having to install air vents that may have been noticed by the Confederates.

The miners used 4 tons of black powder and sandbags to direct the force of the explosion upward. Two fuses were spliced together to form a 98-foot fuse. After a failed attempt at lighting the fuse and a last-minute splice, the explosion occurred at 4:45 a.m.

Men, equipment and debris were thrown into the air, leaving a crater 170 feet long by 60-80 feet wide and 30 feet deep; 278 Confederate soldiers were killed instantly.

three Union divisions to the initial attack after the detonation, though it was delayed by the obstructions caused by the blast. Gen. James F. Ledlie led the charge, covered by 110 guns and 54 mortars from the other two units. However, the Confederates rallied and pushed the Union soldiers back to the hole in the earth that they had created, filling the crater with

shells and bullets and killing more than 4,000 men. The Confederates tallied a loss of around 1,500.

Tom Frederick, president of the Interac-tive Heritage History Group, which coordi-nates Civil War Days, says this year’s battle stands out from others that have been highlighted because Union soldiers lost. This is the eighth annual Civil War re-enactment at Commons Park.

The battle re-enactment will be done on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

FROM STAFF REPORTSANGOLA — This year’s Autumn

in Angola will feature a number of top-notch acts performing on the Blue Room Sound main stage, which will be located in the northeast quadrant of the Public Square.

Friday night kicks off the festival with popular local band Elements playing from 5-9 p.m. Other events on Friday include the opening of the food court, crafts and other vendors, starting at 4 p.m. The Angola Moose Lodge Beer Tent will be open from 4-11 p.m.

On Saturday, there will be a variety of music. It all starts with accoustic music from Brant Arnos at 10 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., the popular band Big Caddy Daddy will perform for two hours, followed by local favorite Mike Conley from 3-4:30 p.m. Fort Wayne band JFX will be the headline act Saturday night, playing from 5-9 p.m.

On Sunday, the band Small Voice will perfrom from noon to 2:30 p.m.,

followed by Rockin’ Productions Kids Rock from 3-4 p.m.

Here are biographies of the two headline acts:

ElementsWith decades of combined musical

experience, Elements burst onto the scene in early 2011. A couple of member changes in January of 2012 resulted in the current lineup and the band that has been unstoppable ever since.

Each member of Elements has a proud history of performing in bands such as Choice, Sierra Shame, Renegade, Triple Dog Dare and many more. Specializing in classic rock, Motown, country and blues, if you love to dance, these guys will keep your feet moving.

Whether its John Day’s powerful and soulful vocals, Fred Gould’s soaring guitar riffs, Ron Trabel’s masterful keyboards or Vinnie Anderson’s bottom end on bass, Elements lives for the music and it shows in every perfor-mance.

JFXLocal rockers JFX, Johnny Freakin

Xcitor, have been having an industrious 2014.

This party band has been known to peform in front of large crowd in the Fort Wayne area.

The band’s fan base and a CD released in 1998 helped them gain opening slots for the likes of Warrant, Tesla, Firehouse, Slaughter and REO Speedwagon.

Now these rockers are already booking shows like mad and hope to put out another CD and open for more national acts.

“The new guys work so well together that this feels like the right thing to do,” said Scott Blandzinski, who plays guitar and sings. “We can’t wait to see where this goes.”

The quartet also includes Ron Baker, bass and guitar; Jamie Henn, vocals; and Jeff Hedrick, vocals anddrums.

Together they perform a set of current and classic rock anthems, as well as hits from the 1980s and club dance music.
