This week, I spent my days at Jingan Educational College Affiliated School (JECAS) being looked after by Sherry - who will visit our school in March, on the second part of this exchange. Throughout the week, I have observed maths lessons from all year- groups, noticing the consistency of teaching, the quick pace and the ping-pongstyle of teaching - which I aim to emulate upon my return. One highlight of the week was the opportunity to teach a lesson to the Chinese children. My English partner teacher and I both team-taught, solving equationsto a Year 6 class. It was a fantastic opportunity. Not only were we able to successfully deliver a lesson (the Chinese children had a high standard of English) with many Chinese teachers observing but the Chinese teachers also learnt a few strategies from us that they will use going forwards. The trip, as a whole, has been the best professional development that I have ever received - the opportunity to study how maths is taught in a different country has been inspiring and I hope to return to the UK to inspire the children at school. The Chinese people are very patriotic and believe that education is of upmost importance: they put the childs welfare first and it shows in everything that they do at school. I very much look forward to welcoming Sherry and Ariana to our school during March 2020 when we will be able to learn even more.

News from our Maths Hub Lead, Abha Miller: Dear All, Three weeks to go to the end of term and I am already over-excited about Chrismaths! This newsletter will not have any more bad puns from me and instead lots of news about the England-China Maths Teacher Exchange.

Reflections from Claire Shorrock at the end of the Primary Exchange: Sadly, I have come to the end of my second week and the end of this part of the Shanghai teacher

exchange and it has been another amazing week. This week, I spent my days at Jing’an Educational

College Affiliated School (JECAS) being looked after by Sherry - who will visit our school in March, on

the second part of this exchange. Throughout the week, I have observed maths lessons from all year-

groups, noticing the consistency of teaching, the quick pace and the ‘ping-pong’ style of teaching - which

I aim to emulate upon my return. One highlight of the week was the opportunity to teach a lesson to the

Chinese children. My English partner teacher and I both team-taught, ‘solving equations’ to a Year 6

class. It was a fantastic opportunity. Not only were we able to successfully deliver a lesson (the Chinese

children had a high standard of English) with many Chinese teachers observing but the Chinese teachers

also learnt a few strategies from us that they will use going forwards. The trip, as a whole, has been the

best professional development that I have ever received - the opportunity to study how maths is taught in

a different country has been inspiring and I hope to return to the UK to inspire the children at school. The

Chinese people are very patriotic and believe that education is of upmost importance: they put the child’s

welfare first and it shows in everything that they do at school. I very much look forward to welcoming

Sherry and Ariana to our school during March 2020 when we will be able to learn even more.

News from the Secondary Shanghai Exchange:

“Minuend, subtrahend, difference, dividend, divisor, quotient, multiplier, multiplicand, product, cardinal,

ordinal, line segment were some of the “common” words in the tuition of mathematics in a Shanghai

classroom. Pupils readily accept and use formal terminology to clearly define their mathematics with

precision. This discipline is evident in the tuition of all topics and has become an aspirational goal in my

teaching of mathematics. Visiting Shanghai to observe how they teach mathematics has raised my

expectations about what can be achieved. The challenge is how much can we replicate their success

against a backdrop of the English education system and culture which is so diverse when compared to

that of China. Perhaps we should have a goal to be aspirational and copy what can be realistically

achieved, as the Chinese say “All can learn well and nobody gets left behind”.

NCP19—13 Primary Mastery: Intervention Whole class teaching is becoming embedded across schools using a Teaching for Mastery approach.

This Work Group will consider models of intervention in a mastery context to ensure that mathematics

teaching has maximum impact for all children. Teachers and leaders will further their understanding of

teaching for mastery by using case studies to inform their practice. They will trial an intervention model of

their choice, and will document their observations to share with others.

NCP19-24 Subject Knowledge for Early Years Teachers Work Groups in this project for Early Years Teachers will develop mathematical subject knowledge in

conjunction with understanding the pedagogy that underpins the teaching of it. Understanding of

mathematical structures will be explored so participants gain a detailed understanding of how children

learn early mathematical concepts.

We are offering 2 work groups, based around 4 half-day sessions, 9.30-12pm

mathematics curriculum and its assessment at GCSE are encouraged to take part in this project. This

work group will explore professional development activities focusing on practical and accessible

Post 16 Work Groups

NCP 19-21 Supporting Core Maths

The success of Core Maths depends in part on the growth of the pool of teachers, schools and colleges with the necessary expertise, experience and enthusiasm to teach it. This project, run collaboratively by the Maths Hubs Network and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), will contribute to the wider national effort to grow that pool, and embed Core Maths confidence and culture within school and college maths departments. Who is this for? All current and potential teachers of Core Maths. These may be teachers in post-16 settings whose main subject is maths or whose main subject is not maths, and who may be unable to access local TSST provision for Core Maths. What is involved? Through three face-to-face Work Group meeting days (or equivalent), participating teachers will develop their practice to effectively teach mathematical concepts and processes through contextualised problem-solving, lead others in their own department to ensure an effective delivery of Core Maths courses, and promote and deliver a Core Maths course in a way that engages qualified students. Participants may work collaboratively with other institutions using a school-to-school support model. We are currently running two work groups; at the Brakenale School in Bracknell and another at The War-riner School in Boxham near Banbury. Banbury: 16 Jan + 23 Mar + 4 Jun, 2-5pm Book Bracknel: next dates - 21 Jan + 24 March

NCP19-23 Developing Pedagogy in A Level Mathematics

In 2019/20, this project will run in Maths Hubs across England and provide support for developing the quality of teaching in response to the demands of the linear specifications for A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Run in partnership with the Advanced Maths Support Programme (AMSP), Work Groups in this project aim to develop existing A level pedagogy and support development of the requirements of the linear A levels and understand the purpose of the overarching themes in departments. Participants will gain confidence in leadership in departments and in developing others in their department.

Who is this for? It is suitable for people leading development of maths teaching and learning in

departments with A level provision and other experienced A level teachers. This could be heads of

department or second in department, KS5 coordinators, programme managers or course leaders or other

experienced teachers with a similar role. This project is not a subject knowledge development programme

for teachers new to A level.

What is involved? Through three face to face Work Group sessions, participating leaders of A

level teaching or experienced teachers will develop their practice to effectively plan sequences of lessons

which meet the requirements of the new A level, raise awareness in students of the links between

mathematical topics within the new A level content, and support colleagues in their own schools/colleges

in embedding themes from the course in their planning and delivery of new A level teaching.

We are running two work groups, both of which are free-of-charge to delegates. Abingdon: 15 Jan + 18 Mar + 24 June 2-5pm Book Chipping Norton: 6 Feb + 30 April + 11 June 2-5pm Book
