Health & Safety Update!

Admittance to School Premises May we remind all parents/carers that the school cannot currently allow visitors/parents/carers onto the school premises (playground and buildings) unless directed otherwise, in line with our current Covid health and safety guidance and procedures. If you are unfamiliar with the procedures regarding access to the school site, please refer to the Full Opening Information Booklet for Parents September 2020 which can be found on the Noticeboard on the school website and the School Office Covid Information 2020 which is located under Info, School Office, Attachments. There has been a significant rise in Covid infections in the area and it is important that we all continue to manage the risks and we thank you for your support in keeping our school ‘Covid’ free. Traffic Management Outside School We have received several complaints this week about a minority of parents/carers who are ignoring the ‘Keep Clear’ and ‘Zig Zag’ markings outside school and using them as parking spaces. The school has worked together with the Parish Council to help support the local village community to ensure traffic is able to move freely at school drop off and pick up times and the creation of these white keep clear road markings and yellow zig zags are there for this reason. We would therefore ask that parents please refrain from parking on these clearly marked areas when dropping off and picking up children from school. At school pick up today a parent’s parked car was unfortunately hit by another vehicle, causing wing mirror damage and distress to the owner. We will be contacting the Community Police to ask them to help us ensure cars are parked responsibly and would be grateful for your support in helping to keep everyone safe and traffic moving at peak times. Extended Schools – Pupil Attendance It is important that school is made aware of any children not attending an Extended Schools’ Club. We understand that it is not always possible for a child to attend a club after school, however please ensure you inform the school office so that the absence can be recorded on the club register. This will help avoid any possible safeguarding issues. Many thanks for your support.

Dear Parents/Carers I cannot quite believe that five weeks have passed since we re-opened our doors to all your wonderful children in September. Another week has gone by where, thankfully, nobody in our school has been ill or had to self-isolate, and our attendance is still >98%, which is tremendous. At this time of year, we would normally be planning to invite you all in to meet the teachers and to learn how your children have settled in to the new school year. Unfortunately, we cannot do that this year, but we are very keen to provide you with feedback about your children. After half term we will be sending out a short, written report for each child which will detail their academic progress over the term as well as letting you know how well they are getting along socially. We will then offer parents the option of a telephone consultation with their child's teacher. Please keep your eye on the Friday news over the next couple of weeks for further details.

Headteacher Updates

from Mr. Grogan

Please find detailed below headteacher updates for your information. If you have any queries regarding any of the content below, please contact the school office.

Please remember that if you have any concerns about your child's progress or wellbeing in school, you are welcome to phone school to discuss or you can always have a chat on the playground with the class teacher. We would always rather know straight away if you have any concerns; please don't think your concerns are too trivial to trouble us with as we genuinely want to know. This is the time of year when we welcome prospective parents/carers to school, and show off all the wonderful things that we have to offer. Whilst the usual visits during the school day cannot take place, we are able to invite parents/carers to visit the school out of hours. If you have a child who is due to start school in September 2021, and would like to visit school, Mrs Bateman and I will be available to welcome visitors on the following dates: • Tuesday 3rd November 2020 • Wednesday 4th November 2020 • Tuesday 10th November 2020 • Wednesday 11th November 2020

Visits will take place at 4.30pm after all the children have gone home. Visitors will be asked to wear a face mask and to observe social distancing rules whilst in the building. Unfortunately, children will not be allowed on these visits as we have to ensure that nobody touches anything whilst in school; it would be unfair to ask 3-year-olds not to touch the toys and resources in Class 1, but we will ensure that they have plenty of opportunity to visit school before they start next year. Have a lovely weekend.

Best Wishes

Class 1 have been busy and thoughtful this week. We have begun to learn our school Golden Rules. We have shared stories about being kind, gentle and helpful. The children spotted when characters in our stories were behaving well and when they were not!

We have been very impressed by the kind acts of friendship we have seen this week and hope to see many! As part of our learning about friendship we shared the story While We Can't Hug. The children talked about the ways Hedgehog and Tortoise showed they were friends.

Class 1 also enjoyed watching the short video story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PnnFrPaRgY. We have been impressed by the beautiful, colourful rainbows the children have painted this week (just like Hedgehog and Tortoise). Wednesday morning was chilly and there were big puddles in the park again but that didn't stop us from going out. ALL of Class 1 are becoming safe and thoughtful when we cross the road to go to the park and they now make the decision when to cross (under our very close supervision!) by saying our special words,

STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, THINK… is it safe? We hope they can show you this safety knowledge when you cross the road with them at the weekend. Once in the park, we walked through the

woods and football pitch collecting beautiful autumn leaves and made mini decorations to hang up at home. In preparation for our first visit to Lothersdale Church next week (weather permitting), we have also been learning about

Harvest, saying thank you for the delicious food we all enjoy. During our Candle Time, a chance in Class 1 for quiet reflection and discussion, the donations for Keighley Women's Refuge have helped the children understand that we can

show love and care for others by sharing. Thank you for the donations we have received so far. Please add to this very good cause if you can. Keep impressing us Class 1, we are very proud of you.

Another brilliant week in Class 2. The children are continuing to work very hard in every task we give them. This week they have really enjoyed learning lots of important information about The Great Fire of London. We have learnt what and who caused the fire, what it would have felt like in London during the fire, how the fire was extinguished and why a fire like that is unlikely to ever happen again. I have been so impressed by how well they have retained a lot of the key knowledge. In Class 3, we start learning about Roman numerals in maths. This learning will continue as the children progress through school. We like to make learning as fun and practical before moving onto the trickier concepts ~ this helps to ensure the children have a deep understanding of them and this week we enjoyed Roman numeral yoga.

Take a look at some of the ways the children built the letters. They were really

impressive! Can you figure out the numbers the children had to make?

This week for our mindfulness journal we focused on yoga. We used a story to help us clear our minds and visualise the adventure and included a range of poses. In class, we discussed when we could use yoga to help us at home too. A huge thank you to all the children who completed the additional baking homework this week. The photos have been added to our display board for our instruction topic. Take a look at some of the yummy cakes the children made and the fun they had making them. Spencer explained that his tasted just like Soreen; delicious!

Viking Day ~ Wednesday 11 November 2020

A letter and consent form will be emailed shortly to all parents/carers regarding the Class 3 Viking Day visit at Murton Park near York on Wednesday 11 October 2020. Please ensure the completed consent form is emailed to school, and the contribution paid via ParentPay, by Friday 30 October 2020.

We have continued to work on negative numbers this week, applying our knowledge to problem solving situations, involving comparing, totalling and finding the difference between temperatures presented on a line graph – an excellent opportunity to study continuous data. The recount writing in English is well underway, the children focusing on the use of expanded noun phrases and modal verbs to help to build a clear picture in the mind of the reader. Year 5 have continued to work hard to learn the balance of words from the Year 3/4 list; check-ups will take place when children feel confident and ask to be tested by an adult in Class 4.

Likewise, Year 6 are working through the Year 5/6 list in the same way. Year 5 spelling sentence pattern homework will be sent out as usual on Monday, and Maths CGP books will be given out to Years 5 and 6 this Friday. From next week, if it is more effective for your child, there will be the option to complete Reading Plus sessions in school on a Monday and Friday morning from 8.30am. Please email the school office if your child would like to attend either session so provision can be made for them – thank you. Following our visit to Murton Park last week, much enthusiasm was evident as we started our study of World War 2 this week. Discussing the Treaty of Versailles and the reparations Germany faced following their surrender in World War 1, the events that preceded the outbreak of World War 2 became clear. We will study the terms Axis and Allies and locate the countries that fell into these categories at the start of the war, identify their national flags and learn important information about each country’s leader. As is evident in the photograph below, we thoroughly enjoyed eating toast spread with the delicious butter we made during our visit to Murton Park! We hope you have a fabulous weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday for the penultimate week on the first half term – haven’t the last five weeks flown by?
