EN UN MUNDO líquido, la seguridad se

disuelve. Zygmunt Bauman, que murió

a principios de año, teorizó la modernidad

distópica que hoy exhibe el planeta. Cuando

las estructuras sólidas se transforman en flu-

jos imprevisibles, la sociedad del riesgo que

describió hace tres décadas su colega Ulrich

Beck deviene la norma, y nadie puede sen-

tirse a salvo de las catástrofes materiales o

las convulsiones geopolíticas. De los riesgos

climáticos o tecnológicos a los bélicos o te-

rroristas, las sociedades contemporáneas se

asientan sobre territorios precarios donde lo

único seguro es el cambio.

Más allá de los conflictos de Afganistán,

Irán o Siria, y más allá también del terrorismo

islamista cotidiano, el pulso nuclear de Corea

del Norte nos ha acercado al borde del abismo;

y más acá de las catastróficas inundaciones o

los devastadores incendios, las pugnas econó-

micas, políticas y simbólicas en el ciberespacio

han abierto un continente nuevo de inestabili-

dad y riesgo. De la supuesta intervención rusa

en las campañas estadounidenses, del Brexit o

catalanas a la supervisión digital universal o

la burbuja de las monedas virtuales, el mundo

comienza a parecerse a Black Mirror. En este

contexto donde proliferan cisnes negros, el

año contempló la aparición de las ‘Silence

Breakers’ en Estados Unidos, vio consolidarse

a Xi Jinping en China y a Putin en Rusia, dio

esperanzas a Europa con la elección de Macron

en Francia, y trajo tribulaciones a España con

el atentado de Barcelona y la eclosión desa-

fiante del secesionismo catalán.

Enmadejados por las redes, y bajo el dilu-

vio exponencial de los datos, seguimos siendo

cuerpos físicos que habitan en construcciones

materiales, y acaso ello sea un signo de espe-

ranza para una profesión irremediablemente

arcaica, guiada por una disciplina que valora

la continuidad y la historia. La memoria, sin

embargo, antaño soporte de cualquier conoci-

miento, se debilita hoy por falta de ejercicio,

al ser la información tan asequible y oceánica,

y quizá por este motivo compensamos la am-

nesia con las conmemoraciones: no recorda-

mos nada, pero celebramos todas y cada una

de las efemérides.

En nuestro pequeño planeta de la arqui-

tectura, los 20 años de la inauguración del

Guggenheim bilbaíno rivalizaron con los 40

de la apertura del Centro Pompidou y con

los 80 de la Expo parisina que dio luz al

Guernica en el pabellón de Josep Lluís Sert,

mientras Barcelona celebraba los 25 años de

sus Juegos Olímpicos y su transformación

urbana, y Holanda los 100 años de De Stijl. El

centenario de la Revolución de Octubre y su

imaginería constructivista fue conmemorado

de forma más crítica y ambigua, mientras los

del ingeniero y arquitecto uruguayo Eladio

a Pritzker, a work by Renzo

IN A LIQUID WORLD, security dissolves. The

sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, who died this

year, theorized on the dystopian modernity that

the planet now shows. When solid structures

are transformed into unpredictable flows, the

risk society described three decades ago by his

colleague Ulrich Beck become the norm, and

nobody feels safe from material catastrophes or

geopolitical convulsions. From climate or tech-

nology to military or territorial risks, contem-

porary societies settle on precarious territories

where the only thing sure is change.

Beyond the conflicts in Afghanistan, Iran,

or Syria, and also beyond the everyday specter

of Islamic terrorism, North Korea’s nuclear

threat has pushed us to the edge of the abyss;

and apart from the catastrophic floods or the

devastating fires, the economic, political, and

symbolic disputes in cyberspace have opened up

a new continent of instablity and risk. From the

claimed Russian intervention in the US, Brexit,

or Catalan elections to the universal digital

supervision or the bubble of virtual currencies,

the world begins to look like Black Mirror. In

this context where black swans abound, the year

brought the #MeToo movement in the United

States, saw the consolidation of Xi Jinping in

China and Putin in Russia, gave hope to Europe

with Macron’s election as French president,

and brought tribulations to Spain with the ISIS

attack on Barcelona and the defiant hatching

of Catalan secessionism.

Tangled up by networks under the exponen-

tial deluge of data, we are still physical bodies

inhabiting material constructions, and this may

spell hope for an archaic profession guided by

a discipline that upholds continuity and history.

But memory, former hardware of any kind of

knowledge, is weakened today by lack of exer-

cise, information being so accessible and oce-

anic, and maybe this is why we compensate for

amnesia with commemorations: we remember

nothing, but celebrate all anniversaries.

In our small planet of architecture, the 20

years since the opening of the Guggenheim

Los socios de RCR recibieron el Pritzker, Foster abrió su Fundación y una exposición en Madrid, y tanto AV como Arquitectura Viva llegaron a su número 200, tras más de tres décadas publicando obras y personajes.

The RCR team received the Pritzker, Foster opened his Foundation and an exhibition in Madrid, and AV and Arquitectura Viva reached issue 200, after more than three decades publishing architecture and architects.

Dieste y del felizmente vivo chino-americano

I.M. Pei pasaron casi inadvertidos; ojalá los

cuatro que irán jalonando el 2018 —el ho-

landés Aldo van Eyck, el danés Jørn Utzon,

el español Franciso Javier Sáenz de Oíza y

el estadounidense Paul Rudolph— reciban

la atención que merecen.

El año tuvo para España momentos fe-

lices: los tres componentes del estudio de

Olot RCR —Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem y

Ramon Vilalta— recibieron en Tokio el pre-

mio Pritzker, veinte años después de hacerlo

en Los Ángeles Rafael Moneo, que por su

parte celebró su 80 aniversario con el japonés

Praemium Imperiale y con el Premio Soane,

otorgado al navarro en su primera edición; el

británico Norman Foster, en un ejercicio que

le vio también culminar las sedes de Apple en

California y de Bloomberg en Londres, pre-

sentó con un foro internacional su Fundación

en Madrid, alojada en un palacete beauxartia-

no al que ha añadido un refinado pabellón de

vidrio, e inauguró en el Espacio Telefónica

una exposición de su obra enhebrada por los

conceptos de futuro y lo común; y el italia-

no Renzo Piano terminó en el frente marí-

timo de Santander el icónico Centro Botín,

su primera obra española, si no contamos la

pequeña base levantada en Valencia para el

Luna Rossa con ocasión de la Copa América.

Y si en el ámbito político el año estuvo

marcado por el conflicto de Cataluña y por

la dramática división creada en la sociedad

catalana, en el cultural se asistió a un flore-

cimiento vigoroso de la joven arquitectura de

esta comunidad, que también vio homenajear

con el Premio Nacional al veterano estudio

barcelonés de José Antonio Martínez Lapeña

y Elías Torres. De las luces y de las som-

bras han procurado ir dando cuenta tanto AV

Monografías como Arquitectura Viva, que

llegaron simultáneamente a los 200 núme-

ros tras un itinerario que supera ya las tres

décadas, celebrando este hito con un número

monográfico —‘Doscientos’— que propone

AV Monographs 203-204 2018 7

Bilbao competed with the 40 since that of the

Pompidou and the 80 since the World’s Fair

in Paris that showcased Picasso’s Guernica in

Josep Lluís Sert’s pavilion, while Barcelona

celebrates the 25 years that have passed since

its Games and its urban transformation, and

Holland the 100 years of De Stijl. The centenary

of the October Revolution and its constructiv-

ist imagery was commemorated critically and

ambiguously, while those of the Uruguayan

engineer and architect Eladio Dieste and the

still happily alive Chinese-American I.M. Pei

went rather unnoticed; let’s hope that the four

centennials of 2018 – the Dutch Aldo van Eyck,

the Danish Jørn Utzon, the Spaniard Francisco

Javier Sáenz de Oíza, and the American Paul

Rudolph – get the attention they deserve.

The year gave Spain some happy moments:

the three members of the Olot firm RCR – Rafael

Aranda, Carme Pigem, and Ramon Vilalta –

were in a Tokyo ceremony handed the Pritzker

Prize, twenty years after the Los Angeles event

where it was given to Rafael Moneo, who for his

part celebrated his 80th anniversary bringing

home the Praemium Imperiale of Japan and the

inaugural Soane Medal; Norman Foster, in a

year that also saw him wrap up the headquar-

ters of Apple in California and Bloomberg in

London, held an international forum to present

his foundation in Madrid, installed in a Beaux

Arts mansion to which he has added a refined

glass pavilion, and inaugurated at the Tele-

fónica Foundation an exhibition threaded by

the concepts of future and the common; and

Renzo Piano inaugurated in Santander the

iconic Botín Centre, his first Spanish work if

we do not count the small Luna Rossa base he

built in Valencia for the America’s Cup.

And if in the political field the year was

marked by the Catalonia conflict and the dra-

matic divisions created in Catalan society, in

the cultural field it was witness to a vigorous

blooming of young architecture in that region,

which also saw homage being paid, in the form

of the National Award, to the veteran Barcelona

un canon accidental: 50 libros, 50 revistas,

50 exposiciones y 50 películas y fotógrafos

destacados de los últimos cincuenta años.

En el mundo se completaron edificios tan

emblemáticos como el Louvre de Jean Nou-

vel en Abu Dabi —una cúpula que protege el

arte con la sombra de sus ingrávidas celosías

metálicas— o la biblioteca de Rem Koolhaas/

OMA en Qatar; tan refinados como la Fon-

dazione Feltrinelli de Herzog & de Meuron

en Milán o la biblioteca de RCR en Gante;

tan innovadores como el Museo Bunker o la

sede de Lego de BIG, ambos en Dinamarca, o

como el MAATde Lisboa o la ampliación del

Victoria & Albert londinense, obras ambas de

Amanda Levete; tan insólitas como el Palacio

de Congresos y Exposiciones de Plasencia

de Selgas Cano o el Museo Zeitz de Ciudad

del Cabo de Thomas Heatherwick; y tan al-

ternativos como la cúpula de Anna Heringer

en la Bienal Internacional de Arquitectura

de Bambú celebrada en China o el pabellón

de Francis Kéré para la Serpentine Gallery.

Y se celebraron las trayectorias de Toyo

Ito con la Medalla de Oro de la UIA, de Neave

Brown con la del RIBA y la de Paul Revere

con la del AIA, mientras los premios a edi-

ficios fueron el Mies al bloque de viviendas

deFlat de NL Architects y XVW architectuur,

el Stirling al muelle de Hastings de dRMM,

el FAD al Museo de las Colecciones Reales

de Mansilla y Tuñón, que también recibió

el de Arquitectura Española conjuntamente

con el Palacio de Congresos de Palma de

Francisco Mangado, mientras la medalla del

CSCAE fue igualmente compartida entre el

estudio catalán de Enric Batlle y Joan Roig

y el madrileño de Rafael de La-Hoz, a los

que se añadieron la consultora GEA 21 y la

Directora General de Arquitectura de la Junta

de Extremadura Mª Ángeles López Amado.

Es inevitable cerrar estos balances con el

capítulo de pérdidas, y en España despedimos

al autor de las madrileñas Torres de Colón, el

también promotor y constructor racionalista

Antonio Lamela; al experto en vivienda Fer-

nando Ramón; al renovador de la cultura ca-

naria Rubens Henríquez; a Enric Tous, socio

del innovador despacho barcelonés Tous y

Fargas; al profesor de construcción y director

de la ETSAM Luis Maldonado; al escultor y

arquitecto onírico de Barcelona Xavier Cor-

beró; al especialista en arquitectura escolar

Luis Vázquez de Castro; y al socio de la mí-

tica oficina MBM Josep Martorell.

Por su parte, en el mundo se lamentaron las

pérdidas del japonés Kazuhiro Kojima, del

alemán Albert Speer Jr. y del estadounidense

John Portman, así como la de un elenco ex-

cepcional de historiadores de la arquitectura:

el californiano James Ackerman, el italiano

Leonardo Benevolo, el británico Paul Oliver,

el austriaco Eduard Sekler y el estadouniden-

se Vincent Scully, todos ellos nonagenarios,

nos dejaron en un annus horribilis para esta

disciplina, y el consuelo que pueda encon-

trarse en la persistencia de sus libros es tan

magro como el que ofrecen los edificios de

los arquitectos desaparecidos.

and Elías Torres. The year’s lights and shad-

ows have been covered by AV and Arquitectura

Viva, which simultaneously got to their 200th

issue after a journey of over three decades, and

we celebrated this milestone with an issue –

‘Two Hundred’ – which proposes an accidental

canon: 50 books, 50 exhibitions, and 50 films

and photographers of the past fifty years.

Major works were completed around the

world: as iconic as Jean Nouvel’s Louvre in

Abu Dhabi or Rem Koolhaas/OMA’s library

in Qatar; as refined as Herzog & de Meuron’s

Fondazione Feltrinelli in Milano or RCR’s li-

brary in Ghent; as innovative as BIG’s Bunker

Museum or Lego headquarters, both in Den-

mark, or the MAAT in Lisbon or the extension

of the V&A in London, both by Amanda Levete;

as unusual as Selgas Cano’s convention center

in Plasencia or Thomas Heatherwick’s Zeitz

MOCAA in Cape Town; and as alternative as

Anna Heringer’s bamboo dome in China or

Francis Kéré’s Serpentine Pavilion.

Entire careers were celebrated, such as Toyo

Ito’s with the UIA Gold Medal, Neave Brown’s

with the RIBA’s, and Paul Revere’s with the

AIA’s, while the awards bestowed on buildings

included the Mies for the DeFlat apartment

block by NL Architects and XVW architectuur,

the Stirling for Hastings Pier by dRMM, the

FAD for the Royal Collections Museum by

Mansilla & Tuñón, which also won Spain’s

national architecture award jointly with the

Palma congress center by Francisco Mangado,

while the Spanish Association of Architecture

Institutes (CSCAE) medal was similarly shared

by the Catalan office of Enric Batlle and Joan

Roig and the Madrid practice of Rafael de La-

Hoz, who were joined by the consultancy GEA

21 and the Director General for Architecture of

the Extremadura regional government, María

Ángeles López Amado.

Inevitably this summary of wins is followed

by a chapter on losses, and in Spain we said

goodbye to the author of Madrid’s Colón Tow-

ers, Antonio Lamela, who was also a developer

and a builder; the housing expert Fernando

Ramón; the renewer of Canary Islands culture

Rubens Henríquez; Enric Tous, member of the

innovative Barcelona studio Tous & Fargas;

the construction professor and head of the Ma-

drid School of Architecture Luis Maldonado;

the oneiric sculptor and architect of Barcelona

Xavier Corberó; the specialist in school ar-

chitecture Luis Vázquez de Castro; and Josep

Martorell of the mythical firm MBM.

Finally, the world mourned the passing of

the Japanese Kazuhiro Kojima, the German

Albert Speer Jr., and the American John Port-

man, and also that of an exceptional cast of

architectural historians: the Californian James

Ackerman, the Italian Leonardo Benevolo,

the British Paul Oliver, the Austrian Eduard

Sekler, and the American Vincent Scully, all

of them nonagenarians, died in the course of

an annus horribilis for the discipline, and the

consolation to be found in the persistence of

their books is as meager as that offered by the

buildings left behind by the architects above.
