Improved individual coating solutionsfor a wide range of applications

A brand new and unique thin film coating technology leads to super brilliantcolors on metals, glasses, ceramics, plastics,…. by deposition of a couple ofthin film layers – some of them with a thickness of a few nanometers – ontothe product surface under controlled conditions.

The intensive and unique colors appear dueto the interaction of the impinging light withthe thin layers.

These Nano Color Coatings show verygood mechanical, chemical or thermalproperties which can improve characteristicsof the product (surfaces) significantly.

Additional features like easy-to-clean behaviour, scratch resistance or anti-fingerprint propertiescan be integrated.

• Tighter grain structure

• Grain structure is uniform along the lengthand thickness of the tube

• Without a backing tube, there is no issue of delamination

• Extruded is higher strength. It is less likely to warpin the cathode when not rotating

• Density is homogenious all over the length and thickness

• Less arcing

• Excellent quality of coating layer

AVALUXE is dedicated exclusively to hexagonal boron nitride (hBN).In some ways this outstanding ceramic material resembles graphite.Because of this, and since it is white in color, it is often referred to as"white graphite".

What makes this material unique is its unusual combination of properties:• can be easily machined• is neither toxic nor harmful to the environment• has excellent lubricating and non-stick properties• is not wetted by most metallic melts• withstands acids and numerous other chemical agents• resists very high temperatures

- in air up to approx. 950°C- under inert conditions/vacuum to approx. 2500 °C

• shows outstanding thermal cycling resistance• is a good heat conductor but, unlike graphite, ...• ... is a superb electrical insulator

Due to our cooperation with several raw material suppliers, we are ableto offer an unusually wide variety of boron nitride products, ranging froman ample spectrum of HeBoFill(r) powder materials over HeBoCoat(r)suspensions and sprays to HeBoSint(r) sintered parts, which we producein our headquarters in Germany.

These precision parts are available in virtually all grades, either as semifinishedor as finished goods, manufactured on state-of-the-art machining centers - exactlyto our customers' individual requirements. A substantial part of our productionof HeBoSint(r) components goes into the plasma industry. Most renownedmanufacturers of systems for physical vapour deposition (PVD ARC) are likelyto furnish their equipment with insulators made by AVALUXE BNP. Consequentlywe are shipping these special parts all over the world, either through the OEMsor directly to the end users.

Hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) is widely used for the insulators that constrainthe electric arc in physical vapour deposition equipment (PVD ARC process).Owing to its superb temperature resistance, thermo shock stability, thermalconductivity and its outstanding dielectric properties, hBN is generally viewedas the ideal material for this application.

Nevertheless, some PVD systems are still being furnished with insulators madeof glass bonded mica, a material that has been around for a number of decades1.

In this leaf-let the properties of two prevalent types of glass bonded mica arecompared with those of HeBoSint(r), AVALUXE's sintered hBN ceramic materials. The comparison is based on tests performed by two institutes of Germany'srenowned Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft:

The IFAM carried out thermogravimetric balance measurementsunder high vacuum

The IKTS investigated the electrical properties.

On the following pages some summary test results are presented. Full detailswould go beyond the scope of this brochure, but are available from AVALUXEupon request.

The test results can be summarised as follows:

• HeBoSint O 820 is AVALUXE's material best suitedfor PVD ARC applications.

• HeBoSint O 820 is clearly superior to glass bonded mica

For the thermogravimetric balance meas-urements the materials were subjected totwo heating cycles of one hour each at max.600°C as shown at left2. Weight losses weredetermined, outgassed substances, how-ever, were not further analysed.

Significant weight loss occurred withglass bonded mica right from the start;Material 1 weight loss actually increasedduring the following heating cycle.Weight loss of all HeBoSint(r) brandswas within the lowest detectable limits. No further weight loss was noted withHeBoSint(r) O 820 after first heating cycle.

Electrical resistance of glass bonded micawas shown to be significantly lower overthe temperature range examined than thatof HeBoSint(r) O 820. Material 1 ceased toperform at 400°C due to softening.

Dielectric strength of HeBoSint(r) O820 wasshown to be far higher than that of bothmaterials tested. This property is very im-portant for insulating components usedin high voltage applications such as PVDARC.

Thermal shock resistance of ceramicmaterials depends to a great extenton the following parameters:

• density (the lower, the better)• thermal conductivity

(the higher, the better)• thermal expansion (the lower, the better)• maximum temperature of use

(the higher, the better)

Due to its favorable characteristicsHeBoSint(r) O820 clearly outperformedboth types of glass bonded mica.

This is summarized in the graph.

Environment

Results of conventional atomization are limited by the viscosityof the melt.

But decreasing viscosity in the generation of finer powders is limitedby the economic and physical constraints of operating at highertemperatures. Other means of lowering viscosity as used incurrently established technologies to unfavorable surfacestructures and surface contamination if pushed to the limitsrequired to produce finer powders.

Current economic considerations limit powder sizes to about6 micrometer for Al and about 4 micrometer for Inconels.

Implementation

The Improved Plasma Atomization Technology utilizes an electricarc. The arc will generate the required environment necessary formelting, evaporating or superheating and ionization of vapors. Injectedwith one or more gases, this plasma leaves a de-Laval-nozzle at Mach2 to Mach 4.

In addition, for the generation of compound powders the positiveenthalpy gives the reaction a high yield and the reaction supportsthe heating, decreasing the costs of energy.

Improved Plasma Atomization Technology is clean, energy-efficient andsafe. It uses a low DC voltage from standard power supplies, is fullyconfined and has no emissions. Based on the polarity of the electricalarc, only the melt is evaporated. No impurities are added from evaporationor wear of the equipment.

The Improved Plasma Atomization Technology can be operatedon any scale from R&D and small to medium batches (10 kg) tocontinuous mass production (60 to 500 kg/h, typically 200kg/h).

Implementation II

A typical set-up of the Improved Plasma Atomization Technologyuses 30 V, 1000 A. The current is typically supplied by a commercial MIG/TIG welding power supply. Sometimes DC is usedwith a superimposed RF signal.

While normally a stream of molten metal is acting as cathode, the current can also be applied to continuously fed solidrods/wires (1 to 4 mm, typically 2.5 mm in diameter) allowingthe atomization of materials which have melting points toohigh or which are too aggressive in the molten state forestablished methods. E.g. powders of W, Mo, Ti, Zr canbe produced.

Also, the electric arc can burn on a continuously fedstream of powder e.g. Si.

Many common components of existingatomization equipment can be used.Existing installations can be retrofitted easily.
