Through Aveng Mining Shafts & Underground, the Aveng Group is a world leader in the shaft sinking and access development market, with the ability to sink and equip both vertical and decline shafts through all types of rock formations. The company has the technical expertise and resources to deliver multi-disciplinary projects that include design work, civil works and mechanised mining. It provides turnkey solutions and strives to deliver exceptional value to its clients, in a safe and sustainable manner while upholding highest quality in all projects that are undertaken.

With project management and design capabilities, the business unit is geared to provide a design function that includes: •  Conceptual pre-feasibility and feasibility studies 

relating to shaft design, shaft sinking and infrastructural services

•  Mine design for sinking of  decline and vertical shafts, mine development, stoping, surface and underground infrastructure

Innovative and cost-effective techniques are used in the execution of pre- sinking as well as mechanised sinking to complete a fully lined and equipped shaft. Surface Mining

Aveng Moolmans is one of the largest surface mining contractors in Africa, moving over 20 million tonnes of material each month. Experience in operating in remote and challenging locations, together with extensive resources, ensures delivery of a world-class mining service.

Aveng Moolmans offers a complete surface mining capability with over 40 years’ experience in both hard and soft rock environments. Besides drill, blast, load and dump, Aveng Moolmans is well placed to provide mine planning, surveying, production scheduling and grade control. Whatever the location Aveng Moolmans is able to mobilise quickly, arriving on site with the appropriate resources to establish and develop their operations.

Aveng Moolmans currently works on thirteen projects in eight African countries, moving more than 20 million tonnes of  material monthly and has mined a range of commodities for a variety of reputable clients.

Aveng Moolmans offers a variety of services to clients, from short-term waste mining and bulk earthmoving to a complete and long-term mining solution.

Aveng Moolmans also owns and operates a diverse fleet of mining equipment to suit various operations and client requirements. This fleet includes 631 scrapers, which were frontline tools in the past with current requirements shifting its focus to the

100 tonne dump truck and 170/270 tonne excavator operations plus both reverse circulation and blast hole drill rigs that now form the backbone of its fleet. The equipment also includes 200 tonne trucks with 500 tonne shovels as loading tools. These machines are complemented by bulldozers, graders, front end loaders and a number of ancillary machines. To ensure maximum availability, utilisation and productivity, Aveng Moolmans has developed effective systems with regard to maintenance and cost-effectiveness. These systems come from years of experience, supplier interface and best practice.

Aveng Moolmans is OSHAS 18001:2007 and ISO 90001:2008 certified.

Aveng Moolmans is able to use synergies with other group companies to enhance procurement and logistics. This ultimately translates into a more effective and reliable mining partner for its clients. In terms of mining equipment, Aveng Moolmans is able to use continent-wide experience and relationships to shorten delivery periods, and to ensure a fleet selection best suited to a client’s specific conditions.

Processing

The Aveng Group, through Aveng E+PC has local and international expertise to support the project execution of a wide range of minerals processing applications. This includes:

•  Coarse and fine coal beneficiation crushing, screening, sampling, blending, dense media separation including spirals, dewatering and thickening, and LARCODEMS technology

Aveng Grinaker-LTA has qualified and well-trained engineers who have extensive plant experience and knowledge of client needs in the industry. Aveng Grinaker-LTA takes pride in the products and services it provides in the field of Process Control Instrumentation. The offering includes control and measurement products, specialised training, after-sales service and technical support.

Aveng Grinaker-LTA represents Emerson Process Management in southern and eastern Africa. Emerson Process Management is a global supplier of Process Control Equipment including control valves, regulators, transmitters, analysers, process automation systems, control software and services.

Operations and Maintenance

The Aveng Group through its various operating companies also provides clients with comprehensive solutions over short- to long-term periods to build, own or operate (BOO) processing plants. Aveng offers both innovative technical and commercial solutions to individual projects. The group customises its solutions to ensure value is added by negotiating each contract to obtain the best fit for all parties, whether the construction and commissioning of a process plan has been executed by Aveng E+PC or others.

Water Treatment

Acid mine drainage (AMD) water arising from coal, gold, uranium and platinum mines is a major threat to the environment. If treated correctly, this water becomes a valuable new water resource – potable water. The challenge is to provide cost-effective solutions to maximise

the recovery of the water.

Aveng Water, with extensive experience in the design, construction, operations and maintenance of commercial-scale mine water reclamation plants, provides technical solutions to treat and manage mine water by converting heavily polluted water into a re-usable resource.

Their solutions are based on the proprietary and highly effective HiPRO™ process, which can be customised for all mine situations. Aveng Water’s technology solutions are available as short-term mobile units or longer-term permanent plants.

As leading providers of complete water reclamation solutions, Aveng Water also offers cost-effective water management services that provide operating capabilities with technical assistance and head office support. These include water analysis, utility management, audit and conditioning monitoring, routine maintenance and equipment renewal, allowing clients to focus on their core business.

Aveng Water operates the largest seawater desalination plant in southern Africa, the Erongo Desalination Plant.

The Anglo American Thermal Coal eMalahleni Reclamation Plant and the Optimum Coal Water Reclamation Plant, which are both located in Mpumalanga are also operated by Aveng Water.

Construction Services

A highly skilled team of professionals maintain a large plant fleet and employ innovative technologies to build specialised equipment when required. Aveng Grinaker-LTA construction services are supported by flexible construction operating systems as well as an extensive fleet of company owned cranes, plant and equipment.

McConnell Dowell and Aveng Grinaker-LTA have expertise in the design, construction and maintenance-related services that include civil engineering, building, mechanical and electrical, marine, pipeline, tunnelling and rail in the transport, water power, mining, oil and gas and petrochemicals sectors.

Aveng Grinaker-LTA’s substantial fleet of cranes range from 25 tons handling cranes to a 400 tons crawler. This capacity gives the Aveng Group the edge in providing clients with cost-effective mining solutions. The group also specialises in the design and construction of chimneys for power stations, and its expertise also extends to the construction of the civil engineering elements of power plants.

Aveng Manufacturing Duraset manufactures and supplies a comprehensive range of steel rock reinforcement tendons (roofbolts), cable anchors and stand-up support products. Its factories have a Nosa 5-Star rating and comply with ISO9001:2008 quality management system. Strata control products are supplied to the gold, platinum, coal and copper industries, including exports to 22 countries across Africa and Europe, as well as Russia, Chile and Canada among others.

Aveng Manufacturing Lennings Rail Services is southern Africa’s leading rail track construction and maintenance contractor. More than 50 years of  experience, combined with a skilled, talented team and a full complement of state-of-the-art equipment, ensure that the group provides clients with world-class solutions every time.

Offering customers the added advantage of strong group synergies in terms of expertise, innovation, skills and facilities, Aveng Manufacturing Lennings Rail Services has been a major contributor to the railroad network – which is a critical element of Africa’s transport infrastructure – in South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique. More recently Aveng Manufacturing Lennings Rail Services has expanded its footprint into other parts of Africa and Australia where it is working together with sister company McConnell Dowell Contractors on major rail projects in the region.

With an extensive track maintenance fleet, the group’s services and expertise include rail track maintenance, supply of concrete main line sleepers, turnout sleepers, universal sleepers, mine sleepers, pipes and culverts.

Through Aveng E+PC’s Power & Energy division, the group provides engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) solutions for utilities, independent power producers, co-generation operations and other major engineering companies in the power generation and renewable energy sectors.

With the capability to investigate, advise and implement integrated solutions as well as broad experience in optimising and incorporating the most suitable specialist technology to fulfil specific project needs.

Aveng operating groups work together to assist clients in identifying value add to their existing industrial processes and plants.

Aveng Grinaker-LTA also services the power industry, focusing on national power projects, including the refurbishment of existing plants. Aveng Grinaker-LTA has a long-standing track record of delivery in the power sector, having been involved in the construction of power stations in South Africa as far back as the 1960s. 

Aveng Grinaker-LTA leverages a range of expert capabilities, including Mechanical & Electrical, Civil Engineering, Building and Earthworks Engineering. The operating group provides a full service offering that includes the fabrication and installation of structural steel, ducting, platework and low-pressure piping. Aveng Grinaker-LTA also undertakes the installation of associated mechanical and electrical equipment, along with the construction of the related infrastructure.

Further to this, Aveng E+PC has the capacity to execute renewable energy projects, including wind, solar photo voltaic (PV), and concentrated solar power (CSP) projects. Aveng E+PC, together with an international partner, were recently awarded a 138 MW wind and a 74 MW solar PV project in the South African Department of Energy renewable energy procurement programme.

Sustainability

The Aveng Group’s commitment to sustainable development is encapsulated in our corporate mission which is to leave a “positive and lasting legacy”. The group recognises that it has a responsibility to the wellbeing of the communities in which it operates, especially in the face of limited resources and socio-economic challenges.

“Without taking care of our planet and our people we cannot hope for sustainable growth in the long term,” Roger Jardine, Aveng Group Chief Executive Officer.

The Aveng Group continues to participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and in 2012 received a disclosure score of 81, positioning 41-45 across the 2012 JSE 100 sample. In terms of  performance Aveng Group was rated performance band D for the evidence provided in the CDP showcasing the actions Aveng Group takes in contributing to climate mitigation. Aveng Group will continue responding to the CDP to publicly declare and demonstrate its efforts towards managing its impact on climate change at all operations.

The group is also looking at innovative ways to reduce its impact on the environment, these include the use of more efficient technology and infrastructure that cuts back on energy utilisation and helps conserve scarce fresh water and other resources.

While encouraging internal initiatives to reduce environmental impacts, the group also assists clients to introduce “green” features on new projects:

which achieved 5-star Green Building status. The project reduced waste streams such as waste oils and scrap metal. Aveng Grinaker-LTA recycled certain waste products into input raw materials. Aveng Manufacturing introduced environmentally friendly products such as Eco-shield and mine shaft insulations. Aveng Moolmans introduced measuring and monitoring of fuel consumption through fleet management instruments at its surface mining operations.

•  McConnell Dowell in Australia constructed an energy efficient building featuring a reduced energy rating and low-energy air-conditioning units.

•  The Adelaide Desalination Project, operated by McConnell Dowell, identified an energy efficiency opportunity by using an Outfall Energy Recovery Device (Turbine). The total electricity generated by both the energy reduction devices will be 1440kW at a total plant production of  300ml/d. All McConnell Dowell projects are currently designed for reduced energy demand, with clients benefitting from the savings.

•  In 2012, Aveng Manufacturing conducted Ambient Dust Fallout Monitoring and is implementing mitigation measures thereof.

By investing in corporate social investment 

focused on maths and science education at

secondary school level; and the advancement

of technical skills relevant to infrastructure

development, the group is working to break the

cycle of poverty by developing a generation

of skilled individuals who can contribute

meaningfully not only to the infrastructure sector,

but to society at large.

Projects supported include: Kutlwanong Centre 

(provides after-school support in maths and

science); Ikhaya Fundisa Techniskills Academy;

LEAP Science and Maths School and Rammed

Earth Schools, a community building project (in

association with the David Rattray Foundation).

The innovative rammed earth project makes

use of indigenous African design and green

building concepts and has become a model

for construction, which makes maximum use of

unskilled labour.
