The Aventura Marketing Council’s award-winning EducationCommittee, chaired by Eileen Glastein of Bnai Zion, has a long andstrong history of providing monthly field trips for almost 100 at-risk stu-dents from their eight Dade Partner Schools. The November field trip inpartnership with the All-Star Basketball Academy proved to be a veryspecial one for the students as they met with former NBA star KennyAnderson who spoke to them about sportsmanship, leadership qualitiesand the importance of staying in school.
Then it was time for some lessons in ball handling, as Anderson, JasonGilliam-Alexander, Jon Hirsch and volunteers from All-Star put the kidsthrough a series of fundamental basketball drills designed to improveball handling, passing and shooting skills.
“I was a beneficiary of ‘give back’ programs where people lent me ahelping hand, and I want to do the same in return,” said Anderson.“That’s why we created the All-Star Academy on Sundays at the MARJCC from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.”

Ann was a bit annoyed. She’d beengoing on and off with Bill for the past sixyears and all of a sudden, he was gettingout of character. It had been a great rela-tionship. He was married and she had beenonce and wanted to more. She had a greatjob, plenty of female friends some male butnot too friendly since they were inher business or themselves mar-ried. Most seemed to think shewas fair game, after all a divorcedand attractive woman. Most cameon to her whether they were singleor married which made her suspi-cious of any male showing up inher vicinity. Her life was prettymuch centered around her job andthe occasional meeting with Bill awayfrom any place in their area.
The problem in the past when she wasmarried she never felt any sense of free-dom to do some things that she wanted todo alone. Always seemed that the husbandwas in the picture even when she wasgoing tout with the girl friends. Might havebeen that he was possessive of her and hertime, a result of which made her feel sort of
crushed with no sense of having her owntime. She also noted that those friends ofhers that were married seemed worriedabout having to get home to do somethingwith their spouses. This had happened toher in her marriage. All it ever did wasaggravate it more and more. The life shewas living now was right for her becausehe had to spend so much with his wife.
When they got together there wasa sense of freedom for herbecause she knew exactly whenhe was with her and when hewouldn’t be.
The other night this lovelyrelationship began to change. They were out at a restaurant outof the main way when he lookedat her with a big smile. Guess
what my wife and I realize that maybe weshould separate for awhile. It will be us fornow and no hiding anymore isn’t that great
Ann looked at him. Separate? Free todo what they wanted? She looked atBill. A sweet man but there was now asign over his head “aggravation” Shegot up kissed him gently on his foreheadand with a goodbye Bill she walkedaway.

new food. We can make this come true withhard work, love and conviction.
“Hard Rock International and WorldHunger Year (WHY) are dedicated tofighting the root causes of hunger andpoverty by supporting grassroots organiza-tions that create self-reliance, economicjustice and equal access to nutritious andaffordable foods. Founded in 1975 by thelate musician and activist Harry Chapinand current executive director Bill Ayres,WHY works to put an end to hunger suf-fered by 49 million Americans and morethan one billion people worldwide.
Melvin pointed out that thanks to YokoOno’s support of Hard Rock International,World Hunger brochures feature the imageof John Lennon with the theme ImagineThere’s No Hunger. She also invited every-one to share in celebrating Hard Rock’supcoming 40th anniversary marked byexciting “40 day and 40 night” activities.
Speaking on behalf of the JubileeCenter, Joyce Curtis explained, “We servehundreds of meals to people who line upevery day and provide boxes of groceries.People who are hungry these days look likeyou and me - there are a lot of families andsingle mothers with children. Please comevisit or volunteer and we’ll show you howyour donations are put to good use.”
During the breakfast, the Hard RockCafé’s gift for generosity was apparent asan incredible breakfast “feast” was servedthat would even stuff Santa. In keepingwith the AMC’s gift for giving back, guestsall brought a minimum of two cans of non-perishable food for the Thanksgiving drivebenefiting Jubilee Center plus many alsopurchased distinctive “Imagine” redbracelets for a dollar to help feed one childthree meals.
Creating even more reason to “givethanks” to Hard Rock, lucky winnersreceived great door prizes including a $100gift card to Hard Rock Café-Hollywoodwon by Rita Regev of OptimarInternational Realty; a Hard Rock memo-rabilia book won by Jeff Greenman ofCalder Racetrack and Casino; and ticketsto “Rock of Ages” at the Broward Centerdonated by Broadway Across Americawon by Shelley Phillips of Fast Care.

When I grew up as a youngster in the1930’s and 40’s, no Jewish family in myneighborhood owned a Ford automobile.Henry Ford, the American hero of theIndustrial Age, who perfected the mass pro-duction of automobiles before World War I,was also one of America’s worst anti-Semites. He spent much of his energy, moneyand time on the publication of the infamousforgery “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,”as well as other scurrilous anti-Semitic tracts,to wrongfully inflict hatred against Jews inthe American culture. According to authorNeil Baldwin (The Mass Production of Hate),“Hitler read all of Ford’s publications, hung aportrait of Ford in his office, gave Ford a Nazimedal of honor and Fords were produced inOccupied Europe throughout the war.”
Ford, who considered running for thepresidency in 1922, became increasingly anti-immigrant, anti-labor and anti-Semitic. Hehad purchased a newspaper, the Dearborn
Independent, which he then used for theseviews. In May 1920, Ford published the firstof a series of articles titled “The InternationalJew: The World’s Problem.” He ran thosearticles for 18 months, then published them asa book. Ford’s words were almost identical toHitler’s in his book “Mein Kampf,” statingthat “Jews manipulated diplomacy to causewars in which Christians died to enrichJews.” The “Independent” published similaranti-Semitic articles for seven years untilAaron Sapiro, a California farm organizer, sued Ford for libel. Ford refused to testify andsettled out of court. During the trial Jewishleaders “had called for a boycott of Ford’scars and slumping sales may have played arole in the decision to settle.’
The Anti-Defamation League negotiatedan agreement with Ford whereby Fordannounced his anti-Semitic articles wouldnever again appear in the “Independent.”Ford alleged he did not know the “Protocols”had been forged and offered the Jewish peo-ple his “future friendship and good will.”Ford later claimed his signature on the agree-ment was forged, and that Jewish bankerscaused World War II. He died in 1947,“apparently unchanged and unrepentant.”Ford’s heirs publicly apologized for hisbehavior.

“Clear the decks” is a nautical expres-sion. It means to finish what you are doingto do something more important. The deckshave to be cleared of everything on aCarrier so that there is room for the incom-ing airplanes to land on deck safely. Theunspoken message is to hurry up.
You need to hurry up and clear thedecks in your personal life as well. Clearyour life so that new things can come toyou. You have to clear your deck to preparefor the action and opportunities that areabout to come into your life. You have ashort period of time to do this before theNew Year. Do everything you have to doto tie up your loose ends. Do the things thathave been on your “To Do List” all year.Hurry up. Do it now and then you can startthe New Year with a clean slate.
Clear out the clutter in your personallife and in your home, office and relation-ships. Clutter may have been useful in thepast but it is no longer useful now. It isholding you back. Put away everything thatis not necessary and prepare yourself men-tally and physically. Make room for thenew.
Start today. Do not fall victim to pro-crastination. Procrastination is just a badhabit and like all habits it can be broken. This habit is a coping style for feelings ofinadequacy and perfectionism. The fear offailure often prevents you from even start-ing to make changes in your life. The fearof change and the fear of something newcan inhibit your efforts and increase yourresistance to clearing the decks. Having adeadline like the end of the year will moti-vate and energize you. Focus on the possi-bilities Focus on how good it will feel.Anticipate the joy. Become excited aboutwho and what can come into your life ifyou make room for it. Clear your decks.

Kane will outline various techniquesthat grandparents can utilize and incorpo-rate into their estate plan when planningfor their grandchildren. In particular, hewill provide a brief overview of annualexclusion gifting strategies, the use of sin-gle beneficiary trusts, charitable splitinterest trusts, and other planning ideas.”
A member of the Florida Bar, Kane con-centrates his practice in the areas of estateplanning, probate, trust and guardianship
administration. His article “What EveryEstate Planning Attorney Should KnowAbout Florida Homestead Law” appearedin the October 2009 edition of WealthCounsel’s Quarterly, a national estateplanning publication.

For those in the know, there is a bona fidefilm production in the works right here in ourown backyard. “The Celebration”, a docu-mentary film by international cinematograph-er/biographer Eduardo Montes-Bradley, com-memorating the 20th anniversary of AventuraTurnberry Jewish Center will be premiered onJanuary 15, 2011 at the Temple gala. Muchexcitement is already brewing about appear-ances in the film by local community leadersWilliam Landa, Don Soffer, Elaine Adler, andMayor Susan Gottlieb to mention a few.
With a nod to showbiz, there are no pix freeof anecdotes. When Aventura’s finest sur-rounded Montes-Bradley at the gates of ATJCwhile he was aiming a telescopic lens at thedome, he was quick to respond without hesi-tation “Just let me shoot the Temple beforethe sun goes down”! Heaven forbid that themagic hour enhancing the Temple should bemissed.
Helicopter fly-overs, rolling camera trolleys, make up sessions, one-on-one consultationswith the film crew, off the cuff stories and more
were all part of the mise-en-scene. With theirturn due in the spotlight, the ingénue “stars”expressed nervousness in front of the camera. After just a few minutes, Montes-Bradley hadeveryone relaxed and recounting great storiesabout their commitment and involvement inthe City and in the Center. We even heard thenow famous story of Don Soffer, penciling inthe plans for the yet to be founded City ofAventura on the back of a napkin.
Temple President Laurence Herrup livedvicariously through the various stages of pro-duction and editing while Dr. Amir Baron, executive director of ATJC calmed every ruf-fled feather. For Montes-Bradley, who hasworked with diplomats, writers and promi-nent individuals, the experience was summedup as “a unique opportunity to depict the soulof a city planned on a napkin, and the soul ofAventura is, no doubt in my mind, the ATJC”.
For information about Eduardo Montes-Bradley and the ATJC premiere, contactCarole Pumpian at 305-761-6536 [email protected]. Amir Baron with Cinematographer Eduardo Montes-Bradley and Crew Cameraman Cesare Salerno

Did you know there isa definitive link betweenheart disease and gumdisease (periodontitis)?
There is no doubtthat good oral hygieneis a crucial element foroverall good health. Inthis article, I want tospecifically speak to
you about the link that has been establishedbetween gum disease and heart disease.
So, what are the exact causes for con-cern? Recent studies have shown that sometypes of bacteria can cause clumping ofblood platelets, which can lead to clotting. If you gums are not healthy, and are pro-viding little tissue resistance, these bacteriacan get into the blood steam, increasing aperson’s risk for heart disease and/orstroke.
Initially, the concern was raised backin the late 1980’s. Studies were conductedin Europe that presented an associationbetween heart disease and gum disease.Further studies eventually confirmed thesepreliminary findings.
How does this occur? Basically, whenan infection (inflammation) is present yourbody produces C-reactive protein and
greater levels of inflammatory products. These are factors that have been known toincrease the risk of someone developingheart disease, or suffering from a heartattack and/or stroke.
Each of us should be concerned overgum disease, get regularly checked anddevelop good oral hygiene habits. But, any-one with heart disease, a family history ofheart disease or stroke, people that havehad heart valve problems, or heart valvereplacements, should take special care withtheir oral hygiene and get their gum healthevaluated frequently. Awareness is funda-mental in providing prevention.
If you have additional questions orconcerns about this particular subject, please do not hesitate to contact me. I amhere for the community and always glad toanswer questions, or provide you with anyinformation you may need regarding yourdental health.

Dr. Mehmet Oz continuously encour-ages overweight viewers of his TV show toget back on track by losing at least tenpounds with his “Just 10 Diet Plan.” Butsince holiday parties are making the “Just10” health challenge even tougher, Dr. Ozrecently enlisted the assistance of Dr.Michael Roizen, Chief Wellness Officer atthe Cleveland Clinic, to present helpful tipssince this is the time of year responsible foralmost all weight gain.
Three Rules to Survive Parties1. Prepare a pre-party pack with choiceslike nuts and low-fat string cheese
2. No stacking your plate – there should bespace between the foods
3. Have a 100 calorie cocktail – one servingof eggnog can have as much as 450 calo-ries. Instead, opt for a wine spritzer that hasonly 100 calories.
Stand Up to SweetsDr. Oz and Dr. Roizen suggest buying
sweets to a take to a party instead of baking
them so you won’t be tempted to eat a lotand get a sugar high before even leavingthe house. They also believe in the effec-tive “eye your pie” strategy – which meanspick only one dessert to eat that you likebest.
Eating Out While Shopping“Eat before you shop” or pack a snack
like trail mix is the doctors’ best advice –but if you do decide to visit a food court ata mall, try sharing a slice of pizza with afriend or opting for a healthful salad.
More Recipes For Diet Success*Cut out sugary sodas
*Don’t eat snacks larger than your fist
*Don’t eat after 8 p.m.
AccountabilityWeight yourself twice a week and
write down what you’re eating at partiessince “accountability” can help you keepcount of how many calories you’re con-suming. This holiday season, Dr. Oz andDr. Roizen agree, “Staying true to your dietis the greatest gift of all!”
