1. Global aviation context

2. Causes for optimism

3. Remaining Challenges

4. What can we do?

5. Discussion

GLOBAL OVERVIEW

International aviation emissions

currently represent about 2% of

total global emissions.

These emissions sit outside the

Paris climate change

framework.

Sustainable aviation fuels

represent the single biggest

opportunity to reduce aviation

emissions in the medium term.

CAUSES FOR OPTIMISM

International policy (CORSIA) – ICAO

Declaration of the Second Conference on

Aviation and Alternative Fuels

Country policies

• Federal

• State

• Local

Technologies progressing

POLICY

• Can be an enabler or an inhibitor

• Sometimes removing policy is just as

powerful - a level playing field is key

• Make no mistake this is an international

market

• Sustainability standards must be common to

all bio-products

FUEL STANDARDS

There are two major certification standards for all

commercial jet fuel

1. ASTM D1655 (certifying to Jet A & Jet A-1)

2. Def Stan 91-91 (certifying to Jet A-1)

Currently alternative fuel pathways are being

certified through ASTM D7566 and are

subsequently added to Def Stan 91-91 when the

specification is updated.

Each branch of the Australian military have their

own distinct fuel certification process.
