New in Version 1.8

The following section describes the changes and new features in Avid Unity ISIS v1.8.

Fixed in Version 1.8

➤ Opening a bin from Interplay had been slow if the bin referenced media on an ISIS workspace to which the user did not have access. The ISIS v1.8 client software fixes this issue.

Page 9: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

New in Version 1.8

9

➤ The ISIS v1.8 Administration Tool will now report the new status of “Disk Full” when there are no blocks available.

➤ Avid Unity ISIS v1.7 client software prevented the Final Cut Pro application from rendering effects when Avid implemented the fix for the slow response between the Finder and the Final Cut Pro application. The Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 client software fixes this issue so that Final Cut Pro clients can render effects and function normally when switching between the Finder and back to the Final Cut Pro application.

Avid Interplay Media Indexer Servers

The Avid Media Indexer Server is no longer required to run an older ISIS client software release.

Full Upgrade Instructions

Avid no longer requires you to upgrade your entire Avid Unity ISIS environment during the initial upgrade session. Each new Avid Unity ISIS software version supports the client software version from one release earlier. You must upgrade your System Directors, ISBs, and switches (ISS/ISX) during the initial upgrade, then upgrade the clients at a later time. This alternate upgrade strategy allows you to take advantage of the newest release immediately and upgrade the clients when it is most convenient. This is true as long as your clients are no more than one version earlier.

n If upgrading from ISIS versions before 1.1, refer to the setup guide for specific upgrade instructions.

The following process summarizes the upgrade process to v1.8:

1. Upgrade System Director software and load the Installers on the System Director as in previous releases. For more information, see the Avid Unity ISIS Setup Guide.

2. Upgrade all your ISBs and ISS/ISXs. Using the Administration tool, select all the ISBs and click Upgrade Storage Blades and then select all your ISSs and click Upgrade Switch Blades. You do not need to wait for the ISBs to be finished. ISBs and ISSs can be upgrading at the same time.

3. Watch the upgrade progress in your Monitoring tool and verify that all components upgrade to the correct revision successfully.

Page 10: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

10

New in Version 1.7

The following section describes the changes and new features in Avid Unity ISIS v1.7.

Fixed in Version 1.7

➤ The Final Cut Pro application had been slow when switching between the Finder and back to the Final Cut Pro application. The delay depended on size of project; the larger the project, the longer the delay. The ISIS v1.7 client software fixes this issue.

➤ First Generation ISIS 1.x Switches (ISS and IXS) can become unresponsive, causing stacking issues, and eventually will result in adverse client performance. Avid Unity ISIS v1.7 fixes this issue.

➤ Performing a full redistribution while one or more storage elements are reporting a non-OK status can result in errors or data loss. Avid Unity ISIS v1.7 now warns you with the message “A Full redistribution will not resolve any error status with a Storage Element. Review the current status of all Storage Elements, and ensure they all have a green status before initiating a Full Redistribution” when you try to initiate a full redistribution when one or more storage elements are not reporting an OK (green) status.

➤ Client workstations running Media Composer 3.5.1 might experience a “Blue Screen of Death” (BSOD) when the ISIS client application was accessed while the editor was running. The ISIS v1.7 client software fixes this issue.

➤ In the Management Console Workspaces tool, the Advanced Commands window might open in the background, making it inaccessible and causing the Management Console to become unresponsive. Avid Unity ISIS v1.7 fixes this issue.

New in Version 1.6

The following sections describe the changes and new features in Avid Unity ISIS v1.6.

Avid Unity ISIS v1.6 Patch

A correction was made so that the dialogue box is displayed properly when you select a workspace and click “Advanced Commands.”

This issue is corrected by manually replacing a file on both System Directors. This procedure can be done while the System Director is running; no restart is required.

n If v1.6 is uninstalled, this patch must be re-applied. This patch is required only for ISIS v1.6.

Page 11: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

New in Version 1.6

11

To apply the v1.6 patch

1. Download the new v1.6 patch file, ISIS_1.6_Admin_Tool_Patch.zip, from the Avid Download Center at www.avid.com/support/downloadcenter/.

The zip file contains the following two files:

- client.swf

- ISIS_1.6_Admin_Tool_Patch_Tech_Note.pdf

2. Log onto the Failover System Director, if you have a failover configuration.

3. Close any open web browser windows.

4. Navigate to the webroot folder in the ISIS Installation directory, typically: D:\Program Files\Avid Technology\AvidUnityISISSystemDirector\webroot

5. Rename the file client.swf to client.swf_old.

6. Copy the new client.swf from the zip file you downloaded into this same folder.

7. Verify that the new client.swf is working properly:

a. Open the Admin Tool in a browser window and log in as Administrator.

b. Click Workspaces.

c. Click a Workspace to highlight it.

d. Click the Advanced Commands button.

The Advanced Commands window opens and displays the Advanced Commands set.

8. Delete the client.swf_old file.

9. Repeat procedure for the Active System Director.

n After the System Director has been updated, you might have to delete the internet cache files on client systems to see the changes. For information on how to do this, see the client systems’ browser Help.

Final Cut Pro Software Approved

Avid has tested Final Cut Pro as a client in the Avid Unity ISIS shared storage environment. Testing was done with Avid Unity ISIS v1.6 and 1.7 with Final Cut Pro v6.0.4, v6.0.5, and v7.0. There is no Avid restriction on the QuickTime version. Use the QuickTime version recommended in the Final Cut Pro application. QuickTime v7.6 was the version used in Avid testing. For information on how many streams were qualified per client at various resolutions, see the Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 Performance Guide on the Knowledge Base at www.avid.com/onlinesupport/.

Page 12: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

12

n Avid Interplay Access supports the Mac OS X platform, and through this application Final Cut Pro QuickTime files and projects can be checked into Interplay. Any Interplay workstation can search for these files and edit their Interplay metadata, though there is currently no tightly integrated workflow between Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro within Interplay.

The following list characterizes the setup guidelines for your Final Cut Pro client with Avid Unity ISIS:

• You need to stay in line with the general client parameters specified for all Avid Unity ISIS Macintosh clients. The following are the specific hardware details used in the Avid testing:

- Platforms—Mac Pro (early 2008) “Harpertown” Dual Quad-Core 3.0 or 3.2 GHz.

- Operating system—Mac OS 10.5.4 and later.

- Avid Unity ISIS—Ethernet connection using the built-in network ports on the Macintosh system.

• Final Cut Pro editing software was characterized with the AJA KONA™3 hardware. The complete Apple Studio 2 bundle was installed.

• Verification tests on Apple Color and Sound Track Pro were run to verify Push - Pull capabilities.

• Final Cut Pro media should be in its own Storage Group. Including:

- Scratch disks

- Project files

c Do not mix Final Cut Pro clients and Avid editor clients within the same Storage group.

• Final Cut Pro clients are supported in ISIS Zones 1 and Zone 2 (not Zone 3).

• The Avid Unity ISIS Client Manager preference settings follow the same guidelines as for Avid editors. The default setting is set to Medium Resolution (limited to resolutions that draw 16 MB/s or less). Use the High Resolution setting when working with High Definition media (resolutions that draw higher than 16 MB/s). For data rate specifications, see the Avid Unity ISIS Performance Guide.

• Final Cut Pro editing systems require 30% to 50% more bandwidth than Avid Media Composer at similar resolutions.

• The number of Final Cut Pro clients supported in a Storage Group are about ½ the number of Avid Media Composer clients at similar resolutions.

Page 13: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

New in Version 1.6

13

n Make sure the workspaces you are using are part of the Storage Group you created for Final Cut Pro clients. When Final Cut Pro clients are sharing the same Storage Group as Avid editing clients, the Final Cut Pro clients have poor performance.

• Digidesign Pro Tools software was not tested with Final Cut Pro clients.

Fixed in Version 1.6

➤ There are certain rare cases where a storage element could become full during a redistribution. Previously, throttling was introduced during a full redistribution to throttle data when a storage element was in danger of becoming full. This throttling feature is now present for all redistributions.

➤ Previously, certain time protocol server behaviors could cause Avid Low-Res Encoders to disconnect then fail to reconnect to ISIS. These behaviors are now handled more gracefully. Avid recommends that workgroup environments use Network Time Protocol (NTP) instead of Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) (as used by the Windows Time Service) to avoid problems due to SNTP's less stringent synchronization guarantees.

➤ There was a calculating error which could cause the Network Degraded flag to be set erroneously on a storage element. This issue no longer occurs.

➤ Captures no longer fail on your Avid Interplay Low-Res Encoder while an Avid Unity ISIS Full Redistribution is being performed.

➤ The Storage Elements tool now displays a warning dialog when you attempt to remove (unbind) a storage element from the file system while a redistribution is in process. Removing a storage element in this state can cause data loss. This warning is designed to alert you of this data loss possibility.

➤ There was a rare condition discovered in which network problems could sometimes cause the client to not reconnect to all storage elements. Once in this state, a reboot of the client was required to clear the condition. If the client in this state happened to be the Interplay Engine, then it was possible for blocks that should have been deleted to persist on the storage elements. These blocks did eventually get cleaned up but may have remained on the storage elements for several days, causing a descrepancy in the used space reported on the storage elements. This issue no longer occurs, as the client reconnects to all storage elements after a disconnect.

New in Version 1.5.1

Avid Unity ISIS v1.5.1 corrects an issue where v1.5 Storage Blade firmware upgrades could stall. This problem occurred on ISBs where the final, unused sector of flash memory was write protected. The correction has been made in v1.5.1 of the ISB firmware.

n The version numbers listed in most of the user interface and client software have not changed from v1.5 to v1.5.1. The v1.5 upgrade instructions still apply to v1.5.1.

If you are running Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 (with v1.5 firmware on the ISBs), then there is no further risk to the system. This failure only happens during the ISB upgrade, although you should upgrade the system to v1.5.1 to ensure that any ISB replacements do not experience this issue; see “Upgrading to Version 1.5.1” on page 14.

Upgrading to Version 1.5.1

If you are running Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 or earlier, perform the upgrade as described in “Full Upgrade Instructions” on page 9. There is no change in the upgrade process from previous releases.

If you are running v1.5, install only the “Avid Unity ISIS Installers” on both the Active and Standby System Directors. This installation can be done while online. It is not necessary to reflash the firmware on any ISBs.

To upgrade from v1.5 to v1.5.1

1. Uninstall the AvidUnityISISInstaller software on the Active System Director using the Windows Add/Remove programs control panel.

2. Install the new version of the AvidUnityISISInstaller software on the Active System Director.

3. If you have a ISIS failover configuration, repeat Steps 1 and 2 on the Standby System Director.

Confirming the Version 1.5.1 Upgrade

When you log into the Administration Tool > Storage Elements, the version column displays version “1.5 Build 43300” regardless of the firmware package used (v1.5 or v1.5.1). There are three version numbers to check, all other software components are unchanged from v1.5.

To check if the v1.5.1 is installed:

t Start the Administration Tool and select the installers tab. Confirm you have the following versions:

To uninstall the old version of Avid Unity ISIS client software:

1. Remove the client software by dragging the folder labeled “AvidUnityISIS” from the Applications directory to the trash.

2. Drag the folder labeled “AvidUnityISIS” from \Library\StartupItems to the trash. You need to authenticate this action with an administrator password.

3. Restart your Macintosh client.

New versions of the ISIS Client will install properly after you perform these steps.

Workspaces on Leopard Desktop

Mounted ISIS workspaces no longer appear on the desktop by default. Connected servers are disabled by default on Leopard. As a result, ISIS workspaces do not automatically appear on the desktop when mounted as they did in earlier versions of the Mac OS.

To enable workspaces to appear on the desktop in Leopard:

1. Navigate to Finder > Preferences.

2. Select the “Connected servers” option under “Show these items on the Desktop.”

Any currently mounted ISIS workspaces now appear on the desktop.

3. Disable Connected servers by deselecting the Connected servers option.

Workspaces Visible in the Finder

Mounted ISIS workspaces are no longer readily visible in the Finder in Leopard clients. The following instructions describe how to view mounted workspaces by enabling Computer in the Finder.

To enable Computer in the sidebar of the Finder and view mounted workspaces:

1. Navigate to Finder > Preferences.

2. Select Sidebar.

3. Select the Computer option under Devices.

The name of the computer appears under the Devices list in the Finder.

4. Select the name of the computer in the Finder.

The workspaces now appear.

Macintosh Client Manager—Client Type Menu

The Avid Unity ISIS Client Manager added a Client Type menu. The choices are High Resolution, Medium Resolution, or Low Resolution. This menu was introduced in Avid Unity ISIS v1.1b for Windows clients but is now available in Macintosh clients in all supported Macintosh operating systems. See the following recommendations for selecting a setting:

• High Resolution setting for Avid editing systems or Avid Interplay Assist using Avid DNxHD resolutions like Avid DNxHD145/220 or DV 50/IMX-50 (shorter time-out values)

• Medium Resolution setting for Avid editing systems using DV 25/IMX 30 in Zone 1 to 2 (default setting)

• Low Resolution setting for Avid editing systems using MPEG-2 (oversubscription shut off, smaller read/write sizes)

Software Version in Macintosh Client Manager Window

The Macintosh Avid Unity ISIS Client Manager now includes the version number of the Avid Unity ISIS Client Manager software in the title bar of the Client Manager window. The version number is already displayed in the Windows Client Manager window.

Windows Vista Support and Windows XP Changes

Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 now supports clients that use Windows Vista™ operating systems with Service Pack 1. The following is a list of changes in the Windows XP and Windows Vista clients.

c Do not attempt to install Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 client software on your Windows Vista client. If you updated your Windows XP client to Windows Vista without uninstalling your Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 client software, you need to log into the Windows Vista client as the “Administrator” to uninstall the Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 client software.

Removed Restart Requirement When Uninstalling Client Software

When installing a new version of Avid Unity Windows v1.5 client software, Avid has removed the requirement to restart your workstation after you have uninstalled your client v1.5 or later software. You need to restart your workstation after a software upgrade to load some file system drivers.

n The installer prompts you to restart after uninstalling the software, but you can safely decline the restart request and proceed with installing the newer version. You must restart after the install.

Page 18: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

18

This software uninstall change only applies to v1.5 client software and later; this does not apply when you are uninstalling v1.4 client software and earlier.

New Window Vista Client Manager Firewall Settings

There are new preference settings in the Client Manager for Windows Vista clients. The proper selection depends on how the client is connected to ISIS. Under most circumstances, select “Enable domain network” and “Enable private network” in the Client Manager > Preferences window. The defaults have the private network type and domain network type enabled. You should not need to change these settings.

The selections are defined as follows:

• Domain Network—Windows is connected and authenticated to Active Directory (for example, a work domain).

• Public Network—Windows is connected to an “untrusted” network (for example, at a coffee shop connected to their public WiFi).

• Private Network—Windows is connected to a more “trusted” network (for example, at a workplace that does not use Active Directory or a private network at your home).

Page 19: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

New in Version 1.5

19

You can view the type of network that you are currently connected to by typing “Network and Sharing Center” into the Windows Vista start menu and opening the “Network and Sharing Center” control panel.

Windows Vista clients who are not connected to an active directory structure have the ability to switch the Vista network location setting between public and private by using the “Network and Sharing Center” control panel. If you are connected to an active directory domain, your network location automatically is set to “Domain”—this behavior cannot be changed.

To set the Windows Vista firewall settings:

1. Click Preferences in the Client Manager window.

The Preferences dialog box opens.

2. Select the Windows Firewall setting you need.

3. Click Apply.

4. Click Close.

5. Restart your Windows Vista workstation.

Quick Launch Feature

Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 currently does not support the “Quick Launch” feature in the browser window on Windows clients using Internet Explorer version 7 with “Automatically detect intranet network” enabled. To use the Quick Launch feature, make sure “Automatically detect intranet network” is disabled in your browser.

To make sure the Automatically detect intranet network is disabled:

1. Open Internet Explorer and select Tools > Internet Options.

2. Click the Security tab.

3. Select Local Intranet and click Sites.

4. Deselect “Automatically detect intranet network” if enabled.

Bandwidth Improvements

Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 provides better client bandwidth allowing a greater number of clients to work with higher resolutions. This improved bandwidth now allows you to capture and playback DNxHD 220 10-bit and uncompressed 1:1 SD media from your workspace. For information on how many streams were qualified per client at various resolutions, see the Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 Performance Guide on the Knowledge Base.

Page 20: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

20

Avid Interplay Media Indexer Servers

Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 client was not supported on the Media Indexer servers. This issue has been corrected in ISIS client software v1.7 and later.

n You do not need to reinstall your ISIS v1.4 client software on your Media Indexer if you are already in an Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 environment.

Fixed in Version 1.5

➤ You no longer need to save an LMHOSTS file to the System32 directory to fix a long delay before your workspace appears after you restarted a client and mapped a workspace for the first time.

Hardware and Software Requirements

The following table provides a list of product clients and required software versions needed to work with Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 or later.

n All Windows editing clients must use the 1-Gb Intel® Pro 1000 Ethernet board to connect to the Avid Unity ISIS system. For instructions on installing the board and software, see the Avid Unity ISIS Client Guide. The HP® xw8600 workstation is now a qualified platform for the Avid editing system. Client Preferences

Client Preferences are automatically saved on upgrades or reinstalls from Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 and later. They can be saved manually when you are upgrading from Avid Unity ISIS v1.3. The Avid Unity ISIS installer DVD provides an application (SaveISISPreferences.exe) that can be used to manually save your ISIS client preferences you are when upgrading from Avid Unity ISIS v1.3. This application is located in the: DVD drive:\AvidUnityISISClient folder. For information about manually saving preferences, see the Avid Unity ISIS Client Guide.

The following is a summary of when it is necessary to manually save your preferences:

• Upgrading from v1.2 (32-bit or 64-bit) - save manually using 32-bit version of provided application. Restoration automatic on install of v1.4.

• Upgrading from v1.3 (32-bit) - saving and restoration is automatic.

• Upgrading from v1.3 (64-bit) - same as for upgrading from v1.2.

• Reinstallation of v1.4 (32-bit or 64-bit) - saving and restoration is automatic.

n If upgrading from v1.7, your General > Client Type preference setting is not saved and is reset to the Medium Resolution setting (default). You must re-select your Client Type preference setting when upgrading to ISIS v1.8. Changes were made in ISIS v1.8 to save the Client Type preference setting in future releases.

Remote Hosts in the Client Manager Preferences

The Client Manager allows you to add a maximum of nine Remote Hosts in the Preferences dialog box of the Client Manager. Although you are not prevented from adding more than nine, you cannot scroll or access more than nine Remote Hosts the next time you access the Remote Hosts Preferences dialog box. For information in adding Remote Hosts, see the Avid Unity ISIS Client Guide.

Workspace Names

You must use ASCII characters in workspace names. The following is a list of 16 illegal characters you should not use in workspace names, workgroup names, filenames, user names, device names, and storage group names: \ / % = @ [ ] * ? + | : " ; , < >. You also should not use a period (.) as either the first or last character in the names you create, and you should not include a space in workspace names when in an Avid Interplay environment.

Page 25: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

Special Notes

25

Workspace names beginning or ending with a period are no longer valid in Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 and later. If you already have workspace names with periods and upgrade to Avid Unity ISIS v1.4, the original issues continue to exist as outlined below:

• Windows—Data is preserved and intact with display issues. A filename or directory with a period at the end is invalid in Windows. As a result the Avid Unity ISIS Client is trying to interpret a period at the end of a workspace into something Windows can understand. This interpretation appears as a graphic instead of a period.

• Macintosh—Data is preserved and intact, but any workspace with a name that starts with a period is treated as a hidden directory by Mac OS X. By default such a workspace cannot be accessed via the Desktop and cannot be seen in the “/Volumes” folder in the Finder.

To access the contents of the Macintosh workspace:

t Click Go > Go to Folder… menu in the Finder and type the path “/Volumes/” followed by the workspace name (for example, “/Volumes/.MyWorkspace”).

A window opens showing the contents of the workspace and make the workspace temporarily visible as a subdirectory of “/Volumes.”

Macintosh G5 Settings Utility

Avid has created an Avid Unity ISIS Ethernet Tuning utility to adjust ethernet interface parameters on all Macintosh G5 client systems connected to Avid Unity ISIS v1.2 or later. This utility modifies the ethernet driver settings to improve system performance in an Avid Unity ISIS environment. For instructions, see “Adjusting Ethernet Interface Settings on Macintosh G5 Clients” on page 32.

Macintosh Dual Port Network Failover Connections

The Macintosh G5 clients do not support dual port network failover connections in the Avid Unity ISIS environment. Dual port network connections are supported in the Avid Unity ISIS environment with Mac Pro clients.

Avid Unity ISIS IP Port Usage

Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 and later uses ports 4200–4599 on a dynamic basis for Firewall access. This access is for data transfers between the client and ISBs, as well as incoming message traffic from the System Director or ISBs. Previous releases used the port number range 4000–4399.

Page 26: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

26

Network Connection Speed

Avid Unity ISIS does not support Zone 1, 10/100 BASE-T network interface connections. 10/100 BASE-T clients must be attached as a Zone 2 or 3 client. For more information, see “Client Connection Speed” on page 36.

Enabling the Distributed File System on Windows Vista

Avid disables the Windows Vista Distributed File System (DFS) in the Avid Unity ISIS clients. Avid Unity ISIS clients running Windows Vista might have delays when opening files over the shared storage network with DFS enabled. If you need to run DFS on your Windows Vista client, use the following procedure to enable DFS by changing a registry key.

DFS Needed for Active Directory with Group Policies

If you use Active Directory and Group Policies on Vista, DFS is required for group policy administration.

To enable DFS:

1. Select the Windows Vista Run program.

2. Type Regedit to enter the Registry Editor application.

3. Browse to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Mup

4. Right-click the new DisableDfs entry and select Modify.

5. Do one of the following:

t Type 0 in the Value data text box to enable DFS and click OK.

Page 27: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

Special Notes

27

t Type 1 in the Value data text box to disable DFS and click OK (default setting).

6. Close the Registry Editor windows and restart the system.

Configure LMhost File to Reduce Delays with DFS Enabled

There is a Microsoft limitation with DFS in which it can take up to 45 seconds for the workspace to display after you restart a client and map a workspace for the first time. In some cases (but not all), this issue can be mitigated by configuring the lmhosts file.

To configure the lmhosts file:

1. Go to the System32 directory and browse to \drivers\etc and look for the lmhosts file. You might see the lmhosts.sam (sample file). To edit the lmhosts file (or create one if it is not there) use Notepad. Do not use Wordpad.

If there are already entries in the file, add the following loopback entry into it. Do not change any other entries or add any extra characters. There should be at least one space between each entry. Do not use tabs in this document.

127.0.0.1 <virtual name of System Director> #PRE

The virtual name should match exactly to what is entered into the System Director Control Panel.

2. Save this file as lmhosts (with no extension) to the following location:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

n If your system is not displaying extensions you have the Hide Extensions option selected in the Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab.

3. Enable the operating system to look at the lmhosts file by doing the following:

a. Right-click My Network Places and select Properties

b. Right-click any “Local Area Connections” and select Properties.

c. Select Internet protocol TCP/IP, and click Properties.

d. Click Advanced.

e. Click the WINS tab, check “Enable LMHOSTS lookup”, and click OK.

f. Click OK in each window to close them.

If a 10-Gb Link Aggregation goes down in Avid Unity ISIS switching architecture, the software does not failover over the traffic to the remaining 10-Gb Link Aggregation links in the link aggregation group. Unless steps are taken to correct this issue, the Avid Unity ISIS switches will continue to drop a fraction of total traffic.

Page 28: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

28

When a 10-Gb Link Aggregation is detected or fails, an indication is send to the Administration page notifying you about the link event. If you are notified a link has failed, do one of the following to get the system back to a optimal state:

- If a 10 GIG link aggregation fails, resolve the issue to reestablish the link. The link could go down for several reasons (for example a disconnected cable or hardware failure).

- Modify the link aggregation group to remove the link aggregation port which had the failed link event.

Spanning Tree PortFast Required with Dual Network Client Ports

If Spanning Tree PortFast is disabled when your system is recovering from a link failure using a dual network client port, a “semaphore time-out” error message appears.

Broadcom-Based Network Adapter Registry Key Setting

If you are connecting an Avid Unity ISIS client that uses a Broadcom®-based network adapter you might need to use the following procedure to reduce the risk of Reassembly Failures, especially at higher resolutions (such as Avid DNxHD® 145). Although the Broadcom network adapter does not have a provision today for setting the Transmit (Tx) or Receive (Rx) Descriptors like the Intel MT Server network adapter, there is a registry key that can be changed on the Rx side—the side that is important for improved Read performance—to minimize the risk of packet loss.

The Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 and later client software includes the registry adjustment for the following computers.

• HP xw8600 workstation

• HP xw4400 workstation

• HP xw4600 workstation

If you install Avid Unity ISIS client software on other clients that use the Broadcom-based network adapter, you need to perform the following procedure to change the Rx registry key value.

To check if your computer or laptop uses a Broadcom-based network adapter:

1. Right-click My Computer, and select Manage.

2. Click Device Manager in the left pane.

3. Click Network Adapters in the right pane to expand the list.

Broadcom is listed under the Network Adapters if you have a Broadcom Ethernet connection.

Page 29: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

Special Notes

29

To change the Rx registry key value:

1. Click Start > Run.

2. Type Regedit to enter the Registry Editor application

3. Make sure that the highest level in the left pane of the Registry Editor is highlighted to ensure a complete search of the Registry. This is usually “My Computer.”

4. Select Edit > Find, or press Ctrl+F.

5. In the “Find What” field, type RxStdDescCnt and click “Find Next”.

6. Change the value of RxStdDescCnt from 200 (default) to 511 (no higher).

7. Select Edit > Find Next, or press F3.

n There are likely two or three (possibly more) instances of this key present. You need to change all instances to ensure the correct value is active at a given time.

8. Continue to search the Registry using the “Find Next” button until all instances of the key are found and have been changed to the value of 511.

9. Restart the computer.

After the restart, consider opening the Registry to confirm the setting has changed. Keep in mind that if the computer is re-imaged, or a new driver is installed, it is likely that this setting would manually need to be changed again.

Replacing an Internal System Director Drive

To replace the System Director drive:

1. Turn off the System Director.

2. Remove the failed drive from the front of the System Director by releasing the drive latch on the front of the drive and pulling the drive from the chassis.

3. Insert the new drive completely into the open drive slot and close the drive latch.

4. Restart the System Director.

Cisco 6500 Etherchannel Configuration

Adjusting Ethernet Interface Settings on Macintosh G5 Clients

Avid Unity ISIS makes intensive use of the ethernet interfaces on your client system when you work with high-definition resolutions. To achieve optimal performance, Avid recommends you use the Avid Unity ISIS Ethernet Tuning utility to adjust ethernet interface parameters on all Macintosh G5 client systems connected to Avid Unity ISIS v1.2 or later. This utility modifies the ethernet driver settings to improve system performance in an Avid Unity ISIS environment.

You can run the utility from the Avid Unity ISIS Installation DVD on any system with a supported version of Macintosh OSX (see “Hardware and Software Requirements” on page 20). You must have administrator privileges to modify ethernet interface settings, and you must restart your system for the changes to take effect.

To tune ethernet interface settings on Macintosh clients:

1. Navigate to the following location on the Avid Unity ISIS Installation DVD:

Changing the Default Drive for the System Director Software

During installation, the installer defaults to loading the System Director software on drive D:. You can change that location by specifying a different drive for installation.

If you install the application to a location different from the default drive D, and then later install the application to the default drive, the new software does not function properly. You can correct this either before or after installation by copying three files from drive C to drive D.

To change the default installation directory before reinstalling the Avid Unity ISIS application:

1. On drive D, create the following directory structure.

n You must spell the names exactly as they appear on drive C.

D:\Program Files\Avid Technology\AvidUnityISISSystemDirector

2. Copy the following files from the AvidUnityISISSystemDirector folder on drive C to the AvidUnityISISSystemDirector folder you created on drive D.

- Partition0

- Partition1

- PartitionDump.bin

3. Complete the installation, checking to see that installer places the application in the folder that was created and the System Director uses the correct files.

To change the default installation directory after reinstalling the Avid Unity ISIS application:

1. Stop the System Director Service.

2. Copy the files listed below from their location on drive C to the same location on drive D:

- Partition0

- Partition1

- PartitionDump.bin

Drivers and Installers Available on DVD

The Avid Unity ISIS Installation DVD contains the following installers and drivers:

• Installers—The following installers are needed when connecting to an Avid Unity ISIS system. Procedures for loading the installers are included in the Avid Unity ISIS Setup Guide or the specific documentation for the device, such as AirSpeed.

- System Director

- Avid Unity ISIS Installers

- Windows Client Installer (this is the Windows client installer used only if loading the client directly from the DVD)

- Java™

• Drivers—The following drivers can be found on the Avid Unity ISIS DVD:

- Drivers, firmware, and configuration files for external switches

- Drivers for the supported Intel ethernet boards

Java Runtime Environment

The Avid Unity ISIS Client Manager requires 1.5.0_06 or higher of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Avid provides a qualified version of JRE (JRE v6.0 is included with Avid Unity ISIS v1.5) for Windows systems on the Avid Unity ISIS DVD in the [DVD drive]:\Tools_3rdParty\Java folder.

n Any System Director using a Java version earlier than v4.03 (exe4j) cannot uninstall and update to a later version of Java unless the MSVCR71.DLL (Windows C Runtime Library) is available on the System Director.

There are two ways to correct this problem:

t Place a copy of MSVCR71.DLL in C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, then install Java v6.0,

t Upgrade the Java v4.0 to v4.0.3 before upgrading to Java v6.0.

For clients using a Macintosh system, download the Java software from the Apple® Web site (www.apple.com) or use the Apple Software Update.

Flash Player Software

To use the Administration tool, you need to have the Adobe® Flash® Player installed on your system. If you encounter problems with the Administration tool display, you might have an outdated version or multiple versions of the Flash Player installed. Uninstall any previous versions of Flash Player and install the Flash Player included on the Avid Unity ISIS installer DVD.

Performance Overview

The following sections provide the expected performance for Avid Unity ISIS clients and servers. For the most up-to-date performance data on Avid Unity ISIS, search the Avid Knowledge Base for the Avid Unity ISIS Redistribution Performance Guide.

Avid AirSpeed Performance

The AirSpeed performance is governed by the resolution selected within the AirSpeed as well as the mode of operation. For the most up-to-date number of combined AirSpeed servers and Avid editing systems that have been qualified on a Avid Unity ISIS, search the Avid Knowledge Base for Avid AirSpeed Supported Configurations.

n Avid recommends always using the Avid Unity ISIS in a mirrored state.

TransferManager Performance

The TransferManager server varies in performance based upon the Avid products and third party solutions that are integrated into the Avid Unity ISIS media network.

Scaling purposes must be handled on a case-by-case basis due to the dynamic nature of the product.

Client Connection Speed

Zone 1 clients must use 1-Gb connections to the ISS. The ISS no longer negotiates at any rate below 1 Gb. If 100 BASE-T connections are needed, connect the clients or server to external switches configured for Zone 2 or 3.

n AirSpeed devices and TransferManagers must be connected as Zone 1 clients.

Network Addressing

In order for proper operation of the ISIS media network, clients must be configured on the same broadcast domain as the ISIS, ISSs, and System Director. The ISIS network topology is split into 2 separate broadcast domains, with one broadcast domain represented by the ISSs on one side of the ISIS engine and the 2nd domain represented by the ISSs on the other side. The default network IP address configuration is shown in the following table:

Default Network Addresses for Avid Unity ISIS Engines

Location Network IP Addresses Subnet Mask

Left side of engine 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0

Page 37: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

Loading the System Software

37

For more addressing information, see “IP Addressing Overview” in the Avid Unity ISIS Setup Guide. If the end user needs to change the network broadcast domains of the ISIS media network, the clients and servers that are to be attached must change and be outside the range of addresses used for the ISSs and IXSs.

The following table lists possible port configurations based on the preceding policies. For each ISIS engine listed in the table, there is an associated Foundry Networks FESX 424. The exception is when you have 3 ISIS engines: you do not receive any additional ports due to the IXS module replacing the ISS module.

n The number of ports shown above is based on available ports and is not indicative of what the Avid Unity ISIS engine can support based on overall system bandwidth.

The 10-Gb port is able to support up to 230 MB/s of the total 260 MB/s available in an ISS. The remainder of the network bandwidth on that ISS can then be allocated to Zone 1 clients.

For example, 14 DV 50 clients are connected to an ISS by way of a supported Zone 2 switch. The total bandwidth of these clients is approximately 224 MB/s. This allows for up to 36 MB/s of additional network bandwidth that can be used by Zone 1 clients or servers on the same ISS.

The following tables describe the number of supported clients in a Zone 3 configuration.

Known Issues

The following are known issues with the Avid Unity ISIS software. When a workaround exists, it appears in the paragraph directly following the issue description.

➤ If your Avid Unity ISIS has had over 10 configuration changes, and you do additional redistributions (for example, add or remove ISBs), you might encounter a problem where the data is not evenly spread across all of the Storage Elements.

Workaround: To correct this, do a full redistribution. Avid recommends that you do a full redistribution as soon as you reach 10 configuration changes.

Known Issues

39

➤ If all of the following are true, attempting to capture DNxHD might fail:

• A full redistribution or remove redistribution is in progress.

• You are capturing to a Storage Group of 16 storage elements or less.

• The Avid editor capturing the DNxHD is running Media Composer v3.0, or NewsCutter v7.0, or Symphony v3.0 with a Nitris DX.

Workaround: You have the following options.

• Do your capturing after the redistribution is finished.

• Start the Administration Tool and suspend the redistribution. Make the required captures and then resume the redistribution.

n Do not leave the redistribution in a suspended state for an extended period of time.

➤ If the Administration Tool is opened from the Client Manager, and an Avid Unity ISIS System Director failover occurs while the Administration Tool is open, the Administration Tool does not automatically reconnect to the new Active System Director.

Workaround: Once the Client Manager reconnects to the new Active System Director, you need to restart the Administration Tool within the Client Manager to connect to the new Active System Director.

➤ If you attempt to reinstall the client software from the Avid Unity ISIS installer DVD and select the repair option, an error message is displayed. The repair function is not supported in the Avid Unity ISIS software.

Workaround: You must uninstall the Avid Unity ISIS client software before installing a new version.

➤ Avid Unity ISIS v1.5 currently supports 1800 workspaces. If you attempt to mount more than 1800 workspaces, you might see an error message on Windows 64-bit systems stating, “The JVM could not be started. The main method may have thrown an exception.”

➤ The estimated amount of space available (which is usually measured in an amount of time at a particular resolution) might differ between what Avid Unity ISIS calculates and what the Avid editing system calculates.

Avid Unity ISIS accurately reports how much space is available for raw media at a particular resolution.

The Avid editing application accounts for overhead in formatting of the media and is more conservative in reporting how much space is available.

Page 40: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

40

➤ If you have ISBs or ISSs that are not able to be contacted, the Avid Unity ISIS Log Aggregator and ISB Connection Analysis tools hang waiting for a response from that component, requiring you to use the Windows Task Manager to quit the application.

For Log Aggregator, deselect the non-responsive hardware and re-run the application. For Connection Analyzer, you must resolve the hardware issue before using the application. To help investigate the problem, see Switch Infrastructure Diagnostics in the Avid Unity ISIS Administration Guide.

➤ After powering down and powering up an Avid Unity ISIS media network, some switches intermittently either take on a duplicate IP address used by another switch or reset to the factory default.

Workaround: To correct this issue:

• If your media network has multiple engines, disconnect the Hi-Gig Link Aggregation links and re-add the engines to the stack.

• If your media network has a single engine, use the management port to reconfigure the IP addresses.

➤ When the maximum number of licensed user's are logged in to the Avid Unity ISIS environment and another client attempts to log in, an “Invalid username or password” error displays.

The message should state that the maximum number of licenses has been reached.

n The client limit that you are licensed for is programmed into the System Director's application key (dongle).

➤ All client editing systems using the following Avid release versions must stop capturing during a Full Redistribution if you are using Avid ISIS System Engines with i500 ISBs.

• Media Composer v2.7.2, v2.7.3, v2.7.4, and v3.0

• Avid Symphony Nitris v1.7.2, v1.7.4, and v3.0

• NewsCutter and NewsCutter XP v6.7.2, v6.7.4, and v7.0

• Avid Xpress Pro v5.7.2, v5.7.3, and v5.7.4

• Avid Instinct v1.7.2, v1.7.4, and v1.9

Once the Full Redistribution is in progress, the editor capture fails.

➤ When you make any changes in the storage group Details pane and click the Close button, you are asked if you would like to save your changes. If you click Yes, your changes are not saved. You must re-apply the changes and click Apply before you click the Close button.

Page 41: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

Known Issues

41

Workaround: To avoid this issue, always click Apply before you click the Close button.

➤ The Macintosh Finder might display the Avid Unity ISIS folder contents incorrectly. For example, the contents of folders containing items whose name includes a pound sign (#) followed by numeric characters. For example, “project # 12” might be erroneously displayed with some items duplicated and some items missing.

Workaround: Avid recommends avoiding the use of names that include a pound sign (#) followed by numeric characters.

➤ Close all applications that use an Avid Unity ISIS workspace and unmount all workspaces before you attempt to restart or shut down your Macintosh client. If the mounted workspace is busy, you might see an error message from Client Manager about not being able to unmount the workspaces.

Workaround: Manually unmount the workspaces on the Macintosh client as follows:

1. Start the Terminal application:

Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app

2. At the command prompt in the Terminal Window, type:

umount /Volumes/<workspace-name> and press Enter

➤ There is a defect in the Safari browser on Macintosh systems that prevents you from viewing the Administration Tool Log when “View Current” or the view option in the “View Archives” is selected.

Workaround: If you need to view the Administration Tool Log on a Macintosh system, use Firefox™ as your browser or download the .csv file.

➤ The Path Diagnostics customized setting for Posix® tests does not work correctly on the Macintosh clients. Use the default option to automatically select the File Access Method instead.

➤ Deleting an ISS from a stack does not clear engine configuration.

Use the Reset Factory defaults button to clear stack configuration info.

➤ If your Avid Unity ISIS environment includes an Avid Unity MediaManager as a client running on Windows Server 2000 SP4, the application event log on the system enters five informational messages in the Application Log regarding the AvidUnityISISClientAgent on every restart of the system. These extra error messages are harmless and have no affect on the application or environment.

Page 42: Avid Unity ISIS v1.8 ReadMe

42

➤ When in the Advance tab of the Switch Agent page and you select Switch Blade > “Reset to factory defaults” and enter the password to confirm the reset, one of the two switches in the Engine becomes the master and the other switch keeps restarting.

Workaround: Log into the ISS Agent on the new master, click the System tab and select Basic, then click Submit in the Chassis Configuration window to correct the restarting issue.
