Chapter 1

Xdeck Overview

Xdeck is a low-cost digital recorder designed for the Avid Unity MediaNetwork environment. Xdeck allows you to record incoming media directly into workgroup storage drives (called workspaces). Previously, Avid editing systems would be used to record the media, preventing the Avid editor from editing. Now media can be recorded directly into Avid Unity workspaces — unattended and at a lower cost — freeing the Avid editing system for editing.

Design

The Xdeck is designed for ease of use. Once the Xdeck is configured, this network appliance records one stream of video and up to four streams of audio to a preselected network drive. The video format you select in the Xdeck should be compatible with the editing systems at your site. The captured material is made available to Avid editing systems that use OMF® compliant media files. You can set up and configure the Xdeck by using either the front panel liquid crystal display (LCD) user interface (UI) or Web browser UI.

The Xdeck operates seamlessly on the Avid Unity MediaNetwork. The Record and Stop buttons, located on the front panel of the Xdeck, allow you to initiate and terminate the capture of material. In addition to these front panel buttons, you can control and capture material through Avid iNEWS™ Media Browse™ by using a serial RS-422 interface. The interface uses standard Sony® BVW slave deck controls with custom command set extensions.

Software Overview

17

Software Overview

The Xdeck system uses an embedded software application that supports all networking and operational requirements of the Xdeck.

Source Selection

The Xdeck can capture video from either a component (Y, R-Y, B-Y) or a composite video input, and it can capture up to four audio inputs. Audio tracks are captured from the audio input connectors to the corresponding audio track in the editing software. For example, XLR connector 1 is audio track 1, and XLR connector 4 is audio track 4. All audio tracks can be individually enabled or disabled.

You can select the input source by using one of the following:

• Front panel manual buttons

• Web browser control panel

The Xdeck starts up with the user-selected default settings and continues to use those selections unless you change the settings. Changing these settings sometimes requires you to power cycle the Xdeck before you can use the new settings.

n The term power cycle, used throughout this document, means to turn the Xdeck off and then on again.

Supported Media Formats

The media files created by Xdeck and stored on Avid Unity workspaces are OMF Version 1.0 compliant. The Xdeck supports the Avid media formats listed in Table 1.

Support for the MPEG 50 (IMX) video format does not come standard with the Xdeck. The process that turns on MPEG 50 can only be enabled by Avid. You must order this option when you purchase the Xdeck.

Software Overview

19

Time-lapse Allows the user to capture a subset of the real-time events or media to an Avid Unity workspace. This programmable video-only mode provides the ability to capture a ratio of video frames. Time-lapse operation is possible for all video compression formats.

For example, 1 out of 2 captures half of the source material. When set to 1 out of 10, a tenth of the material, or 1 out of every 10 frames is captured.

Animation Provides the ability to capture one frame of video to an Avid Unity workspace each time the system is triggered. Animation is a video-only capture mode that operates with all video compression formats. Only the front panel Record button is used in Animation mode.

n Animation mode is not actually listed in the LCD touch panel menus. It is enabled using the Time-lapse settings. For more information on the Record settings, see Table 15 on page 69.

To set Animation mode:

1. Touch the LCD touch panel to enter the menu mode.

2. Select Record/Chunking > Record Settings.

3. Set Timelapse Record to 00:00:00.

4. Set Timelapse Out Of to 00:00:00.

The Record button lights and each time the Record button is pressed, one video frame is captured. Xdeck pauses the recording after each frame. Press the Stop button to exit Animation mode.

RetroLoop™ Will not be implemented in the initial release of Xdeck. The smaller red button on the front panel does not provide any function at this time. If you press this button, a message will display in the LCD touch panel, informing you that the feature is unavailable.

To check for your current recording mode:

t Press Shift+Record.

The LCD panel displays the recording mode.

Recording with Chunking (Shared Volume Segmentation)

When chunking is selected, the media is sent in segments, allowing workgroup users access to media that is currently being captured. Avid editing systems refer to chunking as Shared Volume Segmentation. For more information, see the Avid Unity MediaManager Setup and User’s Guide.

The chunk time is preprogrammed, initially providing media 15 seconds after recording has started. At each chunk interval, more media is available, adding to your previous media until the media reaches the 2-GB file size limit. To enable chunking, see “Record Settings” on page 67. The Xdeck supports chunking by creating subclips of the material at a predetermined file size and by periodically checking in captured material through the Avid Unity MediaManager client interface.

Data Files

The Xdeck creates media and metadata files in the OMFI MediaFiles directories on the target workspaces. If the OMFI MediaFiles directory is not present on the selected network media drive, the Xdeck creates one. The Xdeck also will create a subdirectory under the OMFI MediaFiles directory.

The Xdeck cannot perform bin management operations. Bin entries for Xdeck media are generated by the MediaManager server once the material is checked in.

Workspaces must already be created in the Avid Unity MediaNetwork when you select the workspace name during the Xdeck setup (see “Destination Location” on page 62). However, Xdeck will create new projects, bins, and catalogs if the names you enter do not already exist.

Software Overview

21

Media Destination Selection

The Xdeck remembers the last storage destination set. Whether you initiate recording by manually pressing the front panel Record button or by remotely controlling the recording through the RS-422 serial port, media is stored to the last selected network media drive (workspace). This feature allows you to crash record using the front panel Record button for quick captures.

When the network media drive is full, the LCD touch panel will display an error message and will stop recording. For a complete list of system messages, see Table 17 on page 82.

Ethernet Connections

The Xdeck system has two Ethernet connections:

• Control and configuration connection (LAN 1)

• Data connection (LAN 2)

Each connection needs its own IP address. The Xdeck system operates as a PortServer Pro client to the Avid Unity storage area network (SAN). If the control and data are on separate networks, the data port (LAN 2) must be connected to the same switch as the PortServer Pro.

Xdeck establishes a connection with MediaManager, using the control and configuration connection, to check in project information and other metadata associated with the captured material. This process occurs at the start of recording, during chunking, and when capture is terminated.

Networking

Xdeck connects to the shared storage network with a unique name and IP address. Avid Unity MediaNetwork associates each Xdeck by using either the Xdeck name or the IP address. Xdeck uses a user name and password to log in to Avid Unity MediaManager. Xdeck is compliant with PortServer Pro Version 2.0 and later.

Chapter 1 Xdeck Overview

22

PortServer Pro Connection

The Xdeck software contains Avid Unity client code that provides the appropriate file and directory access to the storage area network. Avid has qualified Xdeck support on the PortServer Pro based on the SR2200 and newer platforms.

n The PortServer Pro based on the Intel ISP2150 Internet Server platform is not qualified to support the Xdeck.

The Xdeck does not use a license in the Avid Unity workgroup environment. Xdeck does not appear in the PortServer Pro Status Viewer.

MediaManager Client

The Xdeck software contains MediaManager client software. The MediaManager server is sent messages by Xdeck to initiate check-ins and when capture is terminated. The MediaManager client generates and stores an OMF2 file with clip metadata on the Avid Unity MediaNetwork.

Time-of-Day Timecode

Xdeck takes the time-of-day (TOD) timecode from the Avid Unity MediaNetwork environment. The time and date are established each time the Xdeck is turned on. If an external timecode is not connected to the LTC IN connector, the Xdeck uses the TOD as an internal timecode.

Control Alternatives

For flexibility, the Xdeck supports more than one control mechanism. These mechanisms are described in the following sections.

Page 23: Avid Xdeck Setup and User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Xdeck_v1_Rev_b.pdf · Setup and User’s Guide. ... MEDIArray, MediaShare, Meridien, MetaSync, NaturalMatch,

< and > Use the Step Forward and Step Backward buttons to move between frames and for entering information in the LCD touch panel menus.

|<< and >>| The Go to IN and Go to OUT buttons are not supported in the first release of Xdeck.

RetroLoop The small red button enables and disables RetroLoop mode. This feature will not be operational until a future release.

YRB and EXT The component (YRB) and composite (EXT) video inputs can be selected by pressing the appropriate button.

When you use the front panel buttons to switch between component and composite video, Xdeck remembers the audio tracks you selected when you last recorded with the video input.

Installing Xdeck in a Rack

The Xdeck is designed for 19-inch (483-mm) rack enclosures and requires two EIA rack units (2U), or 3 ½ inches (76.2-mm) of rack space. Xdeck provides rack nuts for those rack enclosures that do not have threaded holes. Rack-nut clips position the rack nuts at the holes of the rack and are used to secure the rack components in place.

w To ensure the stability of the rack enclosure, start from the bottom when you install the rack components in the rack enclosure.

Attaching the Rack Nuts to the Rack

Install the rack nuts where the Xdeck front panel will secure to the rack enclosure. If your rack enclosure has threaded holes, skip this procedure.

To attach the rack nuts to the rack enclosure:

t From the inside of the enclosure rail, slide the rack-nut clip over the hole you want to use (see Figure 10).

Chapter 3

Configuring Xdeck in Avid Unity Workgroup Environments

This chapter describes how to configure the Xdeck in Avid Unity workgroup environments.

c Do not connect multiple Xdeck recorders to your Avid Unity shared storage environment until you have assigned new unique IP address to each Xdeck.

Software Requirements

Avid Unity MediaNetwork Release 3.1 and later supports Xdeck. You must have the Avid Unity MediaNetwork workgroup environment already operating before adding the Xdeck to the environment.

Configuration

The Xdeck is configured at each site as a network appliance. Site-specific settings need to be applied for the Xdeck to operate in your workgroup environment. Each Xdeck installed needs to be uniquely configured.

Page 52: Avid Xdeck Setup and User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Xdeck_v1_Rev_b.pdf · Setup and User’s Guide. ... MEDIArray, MediaShare, Meridien, MetaSync, NaturalMatch,

Chapter 3 Configuring Xdeck in Avid Unity Workgroup Environments

52

Xdeck ships with two predetermined, fixed, internet protocol (IP) addresses: one for the control interface and one for the data interface. As part of a setup procedure, your administrator must first configure an administrative client system to match the Xdeck configuration IP address. Typically, a direct physical connection is established using this IP address.

Program Xdeck with the following:

• A site-specific host name

• A site-specific node IP address and mask for the control interface

• A site-specific node IP address and mask for the data interface

• The PortServer Pro IP address

• The DNS server IP address

• MediaManager user name and password

• MediaManager host name or IP address

The Xdeck uses a browser interface connection that allows you to input site-specific settings. Once the site-specific settings are completed, the Xdeck requires that you power cycle the Xdeck system. Once the Xdeck is turned on again, installation into the local area network (LAN) with the new site settings is possible.

n Not all setting changes require you to power cycle the Xdeck. A message appears in the browser interface or in the LCD touch panel when you must power cycle the Xdeck for the changes to take effect.

c Do not connect multiple Xdeck recorders to your Avid Unity shared storage environment until you have assigned a new, unique IP address to each Xdeck.

Assigning an IP Address

The Xdeck can be initially configured using a dynamic Web page. You access each Xdeck with your browser. You need to connect a crossover Ethernet cable between the LAN 1 connector on the Xdeck and a computer (such as a laptop computer). Avid supplies an Ethernet crossover cable with the Xdeck.

Page 53: Avid Xdeck Setup and User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Xdeck_v1_Rev_b.pdf · Setup and User’s Guide. ... MEDIArray, MediaShare, Meridien, MetaSync, NaturalMatch,

Configuration

53

n You can use a standard Ethernet cable if you connect your computer through a switch or a hub to the Xdeck.

Use the Local Area Connection Properties window to make sure you are on the same subnet mask as the Xdeck. For more information, see your network administrator. After checking that you are on the same subnet mask, open your browser application on your computer and type in the default IP address loaded into each new Xdeck. The following are the Xdeck loaded defaults:

• IP address 192.168.0.1

• Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

The Xdeck configuration page appears, allowing you to assign a unique IP address and to configure the Xdeck to your Avid Unity MediaNetwork. For more information, see “Using a Browser for Initial Xdeck Setup” on page 53.

You can also use the LCD touch panel to configure the Xdeck. This does not require you to make any connection to the Xdeck. Although it might be more tedious. For more information, see “Using the LCD Touch Panel for Initial Xdeck Setup” on page 55.

Using a Browser for Initial Xdeck Setup

The computer you are using to set up the Xdeck must be on the same subnet as the Xdeck. Avid ships Xdeck with the IP address set to 192.168.0.1 and the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0. For more information on setting your computer to this subnet address, see your network administrator.

The following steps provide an overview of the initial Xdeck setup.

To initially set up the Xdeck:

1. Use a crossover Ethernet cable to connect the LAN 1 connector on the Xdeck to the Ethernet port on any computer.

n Avid ships Xdecks ship with a Category 5 Ethernet crossover cable.

2. Turn on your Xdeck.

Page 54: Avid Xdeck Setup and User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Xdeck_v1_Rev_b.pdf · Setup and User’s Guide. ... MEDIArray, MediaShare, Meridien, MetaSync, NaturalMatch,

54

3. Start your computer’s HTML browser application (for example Netscape® or Internet Explorer).

4. Type in the default Xdeck IP address:

http://192.168.0.1

All Xdecks ship with the same default IP address. Accessing the Xdeck through the browser allows you to set a unique IP address and to configure the Xdeck to your Avid Unity MediaNetwork.

The Xdeck home page opens.

n The LCD touch panel user interface provides the same functionality. Avid recommends you use a browser interface to set your site settings although other options are available.

5. Set up the network information by using the Configuration link in the Xdeck Home page. (For more information, see “Using the Xdeck Web Pages” on page 57.) Enter the following information provided by your administrator:

a. Xdeck Host Name

b. Xdeck IP Address

c. Xdeck Subnet Mask

d. Data Port IP Address

e. Data Port Subnet Mask

f. Port Server IP Address

g. DNS Server IP Address

Using the LCD Touch Panel for Initial Xdeck Setup

If you do not have access to a computer, you can use the LCD touch panel to configure the IP address for your network. Avid does not recommend this process because it is more time consuming. All Xdecks ship with the same default IP address. You must set a unique IP address to configure the Xdeck to your Avid Unity MediaNetwork.

n If you forget the IP address setting for an Xdeck, you can use the following procedure to obtain the address of the Xdeck.

The following steps explain how to manually view and change the Xdeck IP address.

To view or change the Xdeck IP Address:

1. Touch the LCD touch panel to enter the menu mode.

2. Select System Setting > Network > Control.

3. Touch the Target Address button to highlight it.

4. Use the modifier buttons to enter the IP address.

The Step Backward (<) and Step Forward (>) buttons scroll through the numbers and the Play button enters the selected number. For information on using the modifier buttons, see Table 16 on page 79.

You must also enter your Avid Unity MediaNetwork subnet mask on the same line. The subnet information must be in hexadecimal format. An example of your setting might look like the following in the LCD touch panel:

192.168.012.003:FFFFFF00 (FF equals 255)

n When you use the LCD touch panel to enter the IP address, you must include all the zeros (0) in the address.

n Your Xdeck can now be added to your Avid Unity workgroup environment. The following steps explain how to continue your configuration by using a browser from a computer in the workgroup. Although the complete Xdeck configuration can be done through the LCD touch panel, see Table 15 on page 69 for details.

5. Connect a standard Category 5 cable between the LAN 1 Ethernet connector on the back of the Xdeck (see Figure 13 on page 44) and the PortServer Pro switch.

6. On a computer within your workgroup environment, start your HTML browser application (for example, Netscape or Internet Explorer).

7. Type in the Xdeck IP address you just set.

The Xdeck home page opens.

8. Set up the network information by using the Configuration link in the Xdeck Home page. (For more information, see “Using the Xdeck Web Pages” on page 57.) Enter the following information provided by your administrator:

Error Reporting and Maintenance

This chapter provides information on system status messages that could appear in the LCD touch panel. Also included are Xdeck battery maintenance procedures. There are few moving parts in the Xdeck other than the fan, and the fan does not have any maintenance requirements.

Error Reporting and Recovery

Very little interaction with a Xdeck is needed once the system is installed and configured. If a problem or failed operation is detected, information indicating the suspected fault conditions is provided.

The Xdeck notifies and, in some cases, handles the condition and continues operation. These conditions can be categorized as follows:

c Some conditions can cause data loss.

• Power loss

• Hardware failures

• Network connection loss

• Controller connection loss

• Software exception conditions

Troubleshooting Options

Power-On Self-Test

When you turn on the Xdeck, it performs an internal self-test. A successful startup of the Xdeck indicates that the internal boards are working.

n The power-on self-test does not test the external interface connections.

Network Test

You can ping the Xdeck to see if the Xdeck is seen by the network.

To ping your Xdeck:

1. Click Start > Run.

2. Type the ping command and the IP address of your Xdeck. For example:

ping 192.168.0.1

A command prompt window will open and display the ping command and a response, if the Xdeck is seen by the network.

Error Log

Xdeck provides an error log of all the system messages displayed in the LCD touch panel. The log is written to the internal drive in the Xdeck. These messages can be reviewed on the LCD touch panel.

n Once you read, save, or send the error log, it is erased.

To view or save the error log:

1. Touch the LCD touch panel to enter the menu mode.

3. Use the UP, DN (Down), and NX (Next) buttons to view the errors.

4. (Option) Press Dump to send a text file out the Ethernet control port.

The files are named Dump01.txt, Dump02.txt, and so on.

Battery Maintenance

The Xdeck uses a battery that maintains power to the nonvolatile memory and powers the time-of-day (TOD) clock and user settings. The nonvolatile memory stores:

• IP information and project information

• Video calibration settings

• User site preferences

Each time you turn off the Xdeck, your settings are saved to the internal drive. When the Xdeck senses that the battery life is low, the “BACKUP BATTERY LOW” message appears. Once the battery low message appears, your settings are no longer automatically saved. This is intentional in order to prevent any saved setting from being corrupted or incomplete saves. The battery needs to be replaced when the site setting and TOD clock are no longer available after turning the on the Xdeck.

For instructions on saving the settings to the internal drive, see “Saving Memory Settings” on page 87.

Saving Memory Settings

The internal Xdeck settings are maintained in memory by the internal battery and are saved to the Xdeck internal drive each time you turn off the Xdeck. Each time you turn off the Xdeck the file is overwritten.

The saved file name on the internal drive is:

internal drive/fp1a/temp/userdata.sav

Page 88: Avid Xdeck Setup and User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Xdeck_v1_Rev_b.pdf · Setup and User’s Guide. ... MEDIArray, MediaShare, Meridien, MetaSync, NaturalMatch,

n Once you receive a “BACKUP BATTERY LOW” message, Xdeck will no longer automatically save your settings. Replace the batteries and restore your last saved settings. See “Replacing the Battery” on page 88.

The following process is available if you want to manually save your settings.

To manually save your memory settings:

1. Touch the LCD touch panel to enter the menu mode.

2. Select System Setting > Environment > User Data > Save.

Your settings are written to the internal drive in the Xdeck.

To restore your last saved memory settings:

1. Touch the LCD touch panel to enter the menu mode.

2. Select System Setting > Environment > User Data > Restore.

Your last saved settings are retrieved from the internal drive in the Xdeck.

Replacing the Battery

Once the “BACKUP BATTERY LOW” message appears in the LCD touch panel, Xdeck no longer automatically saves your settings. You must replace the batteries as soon as possible. You will require two AAA alkaline batteries to replace the backup batteries that have failed. Once new batteries are available, turn off the Xdeck and replace the batteries as described in the following procedure.

To replace your batteries in the Xdeck:

1. Turn off the Xdeck.

2. Open the battery compartment by loosening the thumbscrew.

Figure 17 shows the location of the battery compartment on the rear of the Xdeck.

Forcing a Shutdown

When you turn off the Xdeck, the system can take a few minutes to completely shut down. Before the Xdeck turns off, internal information is updated and user settings are saved to the internal drive. The Xdeck is off only when the LCD panel is blank and none of the front Xdeck buttons are lit.

If the power switch does not turn off the Xdeck, you can force the Xdeck to restart by pressing a combination of front panel buttons. Two conditions might occur that would require you to force a restart:

• If you turn off the power switch and the Xdeck does not turn off after waiting 5 minutes

• If the Xdeck appears to stop functioning and none of the controls work

n Using the three-button shutdown or restart does not save the settings before the Xdeck turns off.

To force a shutdown:

Appendix B

Configuring a DNS Server

The Xdeck requires a workgroup environment with a Domain Name System (DNS) server. Most workgroups already have a DNS server. If you do not have a DNS server, this appendix will help you to create one on your Avid Unity MediaManager server.

n The Avid Unity MediaManager is an Xdeck requirement in the workgroup environment.

n You can install Microsoft® DNS Server during the operating system installation process or during the Active Directory (AD) installation on a domain controller.

The procedures in this appendix describe how to create a DNS server by using the Control Panel:

• If you understand the function of a DNS server and need to create one, see “Configuring the DNS Server” on page 108.

• If you do not understand the function of a DNS server, see “Understanding DNS” on page 102 and review the DNS networking concepts.

n Avid recommends that you consult a network administrator with DNS experience if you are not comfortable with the information in this appendix.

102

Understanding DNS

The following sections explain some standard networking terminology.

IP Addressing

Every computer on a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network must have an Internet Protocol (IP) address, which uniquely identifies the computer to the rest of the network. Every transmission sent by computers contains the system IP address of its final destination. However, IP addresses can contain up to 12 digits and are difficult for users to associate with specific computers. Imagine browsing the Web and having to remember that http://192.168.130.014 is the URL for the Web site. It is easier to remember and type http://www.companyname.com.

Understanding DNS

103

DNS Naming

URLs are based on names provided by the DNS. DNS is essentially a distributed database that contains user-friendly names for the computers on a network and their equivalent IP addresses. TCP/IP clients that have access to a DNS server can substitute DNS names in place of IP addresses in applications like Web browsers and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) clients.

Name Resolution

The process of converting a DNS name into an IP address is called name resolution. When you type a DNS name into a Web browser, the first thing the application does is send a query containing the name to its DNS server. The server then responds with the IP address associated with that name. The browser can then transmit its URL request directly to the Web server, using the IP address. Once the DNS name is resolved, the browser uses only the IP address to communicate with the Web server.

Figure 23 Name Resolution Diagram

DNS Server Access

To use DNS names, every system on a TCP/IP network must have access to a DNS server. The server can be located on the local area network (LAN), or it can be provided by an Internet service provider (ISP). Each system on your network is configured with the IP address of one or more DNS servers when you supply the TCP/IP client with the client’s IP address, subnet mask, and other settings. You can configure the TCP/IP clients manually, or by using a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server.

DNS Data Distribution

The Internet is the single largest TCP/IP network in existence, consisting of millions of computers, but it would not be practical to use a single server to maintain a complete list of the DNS names for all those machines. To support a network this large, the DNS database is distributed among thousands of servers located all over the world. The owner of a domain name, is responsible for maintaining an authoritative DNS server that contains the records for that domain.

DNS Referrals

When a client on the network attempts to resolve a name in a particular domain, the request message is referred to the authoritative server for that domain. This is possible because DNS servers communicate with each other by transmitting the name resolution requests they receive from their clients to other DNS servers. The IP address for the requested name is eventually supplied to the client’s original DNS server, which returns it to the client.

Top Level DNS Servers

The core servers of the Internet are the authority for top level domains like .com, .net, and .org. These servers maintain the records listing the authoritative servers for second level domains. A request from a DNS server for a name in an unknown domain is referred to the appropriate core server, which supplies the address of the authoritative server for that domain. The request then goes to the authoritative server. It replies with the IP address for the requested name.

Windows 2000 and DNS

A Windows NT server includes a DNS server primarily to support Internet access for Windows network clients. Windows 2000 is much more dependent on DNS. Active Directory uses DNS servers to maintain records for each domain controller on the network, and Windows clients use DNS queries to locate the nearest domain controller. Because Microsoft’s DNS Server includes features required by AD, you need to run a Microsoft DNS Server on your network if you use Active Directory.

Configuring the DNS Console

111

Configuring the DNS Console

To configure the DNS console:

1. Click the Start button, and select Programs > Administrative Tools > DNS.

The DNS console window opens.

2. Highlight the DNS server in the console Tree pane and select Action > Configure the Server.

Before clients can use the server, it must be configured to have at least one zone. A zone is an administrative unit within a DNS server that consists of all or part of a given domain. When you register a domain, like mycorp.com, you own that name and the right to create as many subdomains within it, such as paris.mycorp.com or sales.mycorp.com. You can create a zone out of any continuous branch of the domain Tree, separating the DNS functions for the domain into discrete segments.

The DNS server includes a Configure DNS Server Wizard that takes you through the process of creating one forward lookup zone and one reverse lookup zone.

3. Click Next in the Configure DNS Server Wizard Welcome window.

The Forward Lookup Zone window opens.

Page 112: Avid Xdeck Setup and User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Xdeck_v1_Rev_b.pdf · Setup and User’s Guide. ... MEDIArray, MediaShare, Meridien, MetaSync, NaturalMatch,

Appendix B Configuring a DNS Server

112

4. Specify whether or not you want to create a forward lookup zone.

A forward lookup zone is a database containing DNS names and their equivalent IP addresses, which is organized so that the server can easily look up an IP address when given a name. You must have at least one zone on your DNS server.

t Select Yes, if you need to create a Zone.

t Select No, if you have at least one Zone already.

5. Click Next.

The Zone Type window opens.

6. Select which type of zone you want to create:

- Active Directory-Integrated zone stores the DNS data in the AD database and configures the server to host a Windows 2000 network. Select this type if you are running AD on your network.

- Standard primary zone (Avid recommended) is used solely for Internet name resolution, and does not provide Active Directory support.

- Standard secondary zone is a replica of a zone on another DNS server; it is created for fault tolerance and load balancing purposes.

7. Click Next.

The Zone Name window opens.

8. Specify a name for the new zone you are creating, for example:

xdeckdns.com

9. Click Next.

The Zone File window opens.

10. Select “Create a new file with this name.”

Appendix B Configuring a DNS Server

114

11. Click Next.

After the wizard creates a forward lookup zone, it prompts you to create a reverse lookup zone.

A reverse look up zone organizes its data by IP address, enabling the server to resolve an address into the appropriate name. The process of creating a reverse lookup zone is very similar to that of creating a forward lookup zone.

12. Select Yes, to create a reverse lookup domain.

13. Click Next.

14. Select the zone type from the same three options provided in step 6.

Avid recommends Standard Primary (default).

15. Click Next.

The Reverse Lookup Zone window opens.

Page 115: Avid Xdeck Setup and User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Xdeck_v1_Rev_b.pdf · Setup and User’s Guide. ... MEDIArray, MediaShare, Meridien, MetaSync, NaturalMatch,

Configuring the DNS Console

115

16. Enter the network ID for the reverse lookup zone you are creating.

DNS performs reverse (address-to-name) lookups by creating a domain called in-addr.arpa with subdomain names using the decimal numbers of the IP address.

For example, the network ID 192.168.2 would translate to a reverse lookup domain of 2.168.192.in-addr.arpa. The numbers are reversed in the domain name because DNS names run from right to left and IP addresses run from left to right.

17. Click Next.

18. Click Next.

19. Click Finish.

Once the process is completed, you can create additional zones or resource records within the zones.

Creating a Host Record

To create a Host record:

1. Click the Start button, and select Programs > Administrative Tools > DNS.

The DNS console window opens.

2. Highlight the Zone in which you want to create the new host record in the console Tree pane. For example, in the Tree pane highlight:

servername > Forward name > XdeckDNS.com

3. Select Action > New Host.

The New Host dialog box opens.

DNS data is stored in resource records, of which there are many different types. The host (A) record is the most basic resource record; it is used to map the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of a computer to its IP address. When a client sends a name resolution request to a DNS server, the server accesses the host record with the specified name and retrieves the IP address.

Page 117: Avid Xdeck Setup and User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Xdeck_v1_Rev_b.pdf · Setup and User’s Guide. ... MEDIArray, MediaShare, Meridien, MetaSync, NaturalMatch,

Creating a Host Record

117

4. Add, at a minimum, entries for the MediaManager and PortServers that will be used by the installed Xdeck systems.

5. Enter the host name of the computer to be represented by the host record in the Name text box of the New Host dialog box.

The console adds the domain name associated with the zone to create the FQDN, for example:

PortServerName

6. Enter the IP address of the computer with the specified host name in the IP address text box of the New Host dialog box, for example:

192.168.1.10

7. Select the “Create associated pointer (PTR) record” option to automatically create the equivalent PTR record for the host. (Avid recommends that you create a PTR, but this step is not required.)

n Avid recommends that you create an inverse PTR resource record (a reverse lookup) of a host record. While a host record maps an FQDN to an IP address, a PTR record maps the IP address to the FQDN, using the in-addr.arpa domain structure.

8. Click Add Host.

After you clear the message box that informs you that the host record has been created, you can see the new object in the zone you selected.

9. Repeat steps 4 to 7 for each PortServer Pro and Xdeck system (other clients are optional).

To configure a PTR:

1. Click the Start button, and select Programs > Administrative Tools > DNS

The DNS console window opens.

2. Highlight the zone in which you want to create the new PTR record in the console Tree pane.

The PTR records are used to map IP addresses to FQDNs. You must select a zone in the console’s Reverse Lookup Zones container.
