Pressure sores are localised injuries to the skin and underlying tissue as a result of pressure. Pressure, applied to soft tissue, results in obstructed blood flow to the soft tissue. Healing of such circulatory problems may be determined by the person’s age, medical conditions (such as diabetes or an infection), smoking and medications. In response to this issue, foam companies have produced pressure reducing seat cushions to combat problems associated with sitting for lengthy periods of time, but these require multi-directional stretch upholstery so as not to negate the benefits of the cushion. Panaz Panvelle Stretch™ and Vyflex Plus™ work in unison with pressure foams to optimise their benefit. Stretch has been carefully gauged to work in tandem with the cushion: too little stretch and the pressure foam is hindered, too much and the upholstery will not support it.


Below we demonstrate the benefits of Vyflex Plus™ used in conjunction with pressure relief foam against a standard PVC upholstery.

The Solution: AcryltronTM

In response, Panaz invested a great deal of time, money and personnel resource to developing a cure for the failing fabric surfaces.

Working with both industry and academic experts, a dedicated team at Panaz identified a solution to the quality problems caused by ‘Non-Ionic Surfactants, Alkalis and Alcohols’, otherwise recognised as the ubiquitous cleaning products seen being squirted from plastic bottles in all hospitality and healthcare environments. The accumulation and build up of these products was slowly degrading the PU surface, a process known as solvolysis.

This identifcation led to a cure in the form of AcryltronTM. AcryltronTM is unique to Panaz. It is a protective coating which mitigates the susceptibility of PU coating to cleaning products and creates a more resilient and durable coating. A further advantage of AcryltronTM is that our faux leathers are now more stain resistant and hard wearing than ever, with Martindale Abrasion testing to 350,000+ rubs. Panaz faux leathers and vinyls have been shown to outperform other faux leathers in the market place by independent tests performed by Satra.

We know as fact that faux leather PU and PVC chemistry is adversely affected by cleaning products containing alkalis, alcohols and non-ionic surfactants - in that order.

The Problem: Vinyl & PU Degradation

Shield PlusTM is the obvious choice Panaz faux leathers and vinyls are protected by Shield PlusTM, an effective addition to the Panaz anti-microbial armoury. Shield is a revolutionary technology, providing a permanent and broad effectiveness against microbes, including the C diff spore. Shield PlusTM is non-toxic, non-leaching, non-depleting and (most importantly for the environment) non-silver anti-microbial which has been proved effective against the broadest spectrum of bacteria whilst remaining bonded and durable for the life of the fabric.

Shield PlusTM employs a non-migrating technology based upon the permanent application of a non-migrating/non-leaching molecular coating within the vinyl. This coating destroys bacteria on contact. It is permanently encapsulated within the textile, it attracts, deactivates and electrocutes the biochemicals within each microbe.

Recent studies have indicated the following:

• More than 10 million germs are located around the average workstation - including seating.

• 72% of people report going to work despite being sick.

• 80% of infections can be transmitted by touch.

• Workers in open plan offices reported taking 63% more sick days than those in private offices.

Healthcare Over the past two decades, Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) has presented a significant challenge.The impact that such infections have on patient safety, health and well-being brings distress to both them and their families, not to mention the healthcare professionals caring for them. This burden to human welfare is compounded by the financial cost to the NHS in terms of service delivery.

Routes to cross contamination and infection are multiple and it is difficult to quantify the role of the environment in the transfer of infection. Some report that 19% of contaminations may be attributable to the environment, others as much as 40%. The greatest risk for patients is contamination in their immediate vicinity such as bed rails, lockers, curtains, bedding and upholstery.

Previous reticence to the use of conventional, leaching anti-microbial textiles in hospitals is due to concerns regarding:

• Depletion of the anti-microbial

• Resulting in adaptive organisms

• Ultimately immunity to the agent

Pressure sores are localised injuries to the skin and underlying tissue as a result of pressure. Pressure, applied to soft tissue, results in obstructed blood flow to the soft tissue. Healing of such circulatory problems may be determined by the person’s age, medical conditions (such as diabetes or an infection), smoking and medications.

In response to this issue, foam companies have produced pressure reducing seat cushions to combat problems associated with sitting for lengthy periods of time, but these require multi-directional stretch upholstery so as not to negate the benefits of the cushion. Panaz Panvelle Stretch™ and Vyflex Plus™ work in unison with pressure foams to optimise their benefit. Stretch has been carefully gauged to work in tandem with the cushion: too little stretch and the pressure foam is hindered, too much and the upholstery will not support it.

Designing forDementia care Environments

Seven years ago Panaz solicited the assistance of Stirling Dementia Services Design Centre to review our printed fabric and upholstery portfolio and assist by providing a rating of usability of our collections within dementia environments.

Fabrics play a major part in any care environment, impacting on mood, sense of well being, security and comfort. Ensuring that fabric selections reflect the residents’ interests, gender and stage of life is important as it helps to reinforce personal identity, enhancing self esteem and confidence.

People need to feel comfortable in their own home and fabrics are one very visible element contributing to the achievement of that. That said, the realms of designing for dementia care present important considerations and concerns that can often provoke a too safe and conservative approach to the scheme in terms of colour and design. The considered approach is beneficial but the over cautious or unimaginative design may not produce the most therapeutic or nurturing environments for the individual.

Under-stimulation is as detrimental as over-stimulation in these environments. In the pursuit to offer guidance and advice on fabric selections to our clients in this area of work, we in turn sought assistance from the Dementia Services Development Centre at Stirling University and we were delighted to work with them to establish guidelines on the use of fabrics when designing for dementia care.

We have developed a series of guidelines to form a general framework of advice which still allows for the individual and personal touch. As with many design features in a dementia-friendly environment, what is fine for one person may not be the case for another. Individual needs and preferences should be considered. Hence, rather than trying to identify what may be right or wrong in a pattern, it may be more helpful to list features to be mindful of. Our guidelines do just that.Panaz recognises that people with dementia are very individual in regard to their likes, dislikes, concerns and worries and in the things that comfort them. All of our designs reflect this understanding.

The normal ageing process produces sensory losses such as visual impairment. This is of particular concern for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementias as they may not be able to understand why and therefore be unable to compensate for it. Good design helps them cope with this loss.

The elderly gradually lose the ability to discriminate between colours and this is exaggerated with dementia, so the use of contrasting colours within design is vital. Contrast seating with carpets, bedspreads and flooring, door handles from doors, light switches from walls, etc. Pale colours together (or a mass of dark shades) are difficult to discern by the visually impaired. Look to add texture and semi-plains to create interest and, most importantly, select fabrics for seating which clearly contrast in colour and shade with carpet colours to ensure that seating is clearly visible.

Perception of colour is personal so consider the possible connotations such as political affiliation, football teams, colours, superstition and water.

Guidelines of Features To Consider

LIGHTLighting is paramount, particularly daylight which is natural and diffuses easily. Ensure that drapes are designed not to overlap the actual window and can be pulled right back to allow as much light in as possible.

DEFINE EDGES Simple things like contrasting piping on the edge of seating, on bedspreads at the edge of the bed or on the edge of draperies where they are pulled to and drawn back, all assist in making life easier and less troublesome.

DESIGN Alzheimer’s and other dementias can significantly change how people interpret what they see. Boldly defined stripes or designs with a vertical bias may be interpreted as bars or grills.

MOVEMENT Swirling or sinuous patterns may cause some queasiness, especially if the person is taking anti-psychotic medication.

AGE/GENERATION APPROPRIATENESSAlthough often colourful and detailed, retro patterns of the 50’s and 60’s may be appreciated by the elderly.

SMALL GEOMETRICS OR FLECKSThese can look like something has been spilt or needing to be swept up or picked off.

FLOWERS/LEAVES Patterns of flowers and leaves which are to any extent realistic are not helpful because they may be mistaken for the real thing. Abstract or stylised designs of organic items generally work better.

STIRLING RATINGTogether, Stirling Dementia Centre and Panaz have conducted a review of Panaz Fabrics and have rated their usability in an easy to use matrix which offers guidance.

People with dementia often remember their distant past more readily than recent events. Most particularly this would mean the years of young adulthood when they were first setting up home, becoming independent and making their own decisions and way in the world. This inevitably flavours their perception of the present. For example, whilst red is often avoided by designers for dementia care, the Manchester United supporter will regard red as a welcoming and comforting colour.

RATING PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Fabrics rated 3a can be used indiscriminately as they are plain fabrics. These can be used for upholstery, curtains, bedspreads and accessories. There should, however, BE CONTRAST with other surfaces in the room: bedspreads and seating with carpets and floor finishes.

There are no 3b and 3c rating as the colour does not affect the rating when the fabric is plain.

Fabrics rated 2 are patterned fabrics which, in general, should not provoke any upset or concern.It is important to use pattern to add interest and stimuli to a room. Use these designs freely for upholstery, bedspreads and accessories but do consider possible perceptual problems when used for curtains.

Fabrics rated 2b should be used more carefully than those rated 2a due to a stronger colourway.

Fabrics rated 2c should be used with further care than those rated 2b due to an even stronger colourway.

Fabrics rated 1 incorporate large flowers, stripes and colourful elements which make a room welcoming and interesting. These can be used but with caution.Try using these for accessories. For example, consider a double-sided bed runner with a plain or semi-plain reverse.Should the pattern upset it can be reversed or removed easily.

Fabrics rated 1b should be used more carefully than those rated 1a due to a stronger colourway.

Fabrics rated 1c should be used more carefully than those rated 1b due to an even stronger colourway.

Over recent years there has been growing awareness of the importance of colour, light and contrast in creating comfortable, usable and stimulating environments for people living with visual impairment. One of the key factors when designing an effective, practical and attractive scheme is to consider their perception of the world and how this is affected by this impairment. The RNIB (Fact Sheet 25) advises that 96% of people registered blind and partially sighted have some degree of residual vision and that, in order to make the most of this residual vision, visual contrast should be employed. The degree of contrast between adjacent surfaces is an important indicator to the visually impaired when navigating their environment and this in turn reaps benefits for their independence, comfort and confidence.In addition to those people who are born with or acquire a visual impairment through accident or disease, the normal ageing process produces sensory losses for everyone. This is of particular concern for those living with Alzheimer’s disease or other

dementias who perhaps are unable to devise coping mechanisms of their own. It is important for design to compensate for this deterioration as this, coupled with a potential lack of understanding of this loss, affects a person’s perception of the world around them and creates confusion and distress.The light reflective value describes the amount of light a surface reflects, i.e., the lightness or darkness of a surface, on a scale of 0 - 99: the higher the number, the lighter the surface. The level of contrast between surfaces such as walls and ceilings, walls and doors, furniture and floors etc, is invaluable in giving clues to the visually impaired as to the size, shape and potential for navigation of a room. In terms of measuring visual contrast, the current guidelines in the Regulations and in the relevant Codes of Practice, BS8300:2009, recommends that adequate visual contrast is provided if the LRV of the contrasting areas exceeds 30 points.

their clients, Panaz have commissioned a series of LRV tests on some of our best selling colours using the latest integrating sphere spectrophotometer to measure the total quantity of light reflected from the surface of our fabrics.

Moving forward, this will continue to be a priority for us to support our new ranges and help our clients to create the best in design.

LIGHTLighting is paramount to optimise the consideration given to LRVs. Importantly, natural daylight diffuses easily and is the best for the visually impaired. Ensure that windows are designed to allow curtains to be drawn back fully to avoid overlapping the window, allowing in as much light as possible.Natural light has a therapeutic effect and is the best for mood and well being. Conversely, a good degree of darkness in the bedroom at night is important for a good sleep which in turn is beneficial to mood, alertness and sense of well being in the morning.
