Foreword

When I fi rst started working in accountancy the phrase ‘value billing’ was associated with unethical

behaviour. Everything was billed by the hour. But at the ti me there was a logic to that - aft er all, my

work was about 99% compliance! This Tax Club survey of best practi ce shows that, across the industry,

things are fi nally changing.

Firms nati onwide are working harder to help their clients minimise their tax liabiliti es and are billing in

line with the value of the work they are doing rather than simply based on how long it takes. But the

report also shows there is sti ll work to do with almost 40% of fi rms reporti ng no increase in the amount

of tax planning work they perform for their clients. Even more alarming is that over 70% of fi rms are

sti ll charging fees based on the ti me taken or expected rather than the value they are bringing to their

clients. This means 7 out of 10 accountants are billing the same for photocopying as they are for group

tax planning.
