Vice-President’s Message

Well, I can't believe it's Feburary 2010 already. For those of you that went to the AMA show in Ontario, it had some really good speakers this year including Burt Rutan. I ran into several of the club members during the show and hoped all of you found a pro-ject to build while the rain pounds us this month. I am also excited to see how the field looks after the new improvements and repairs to the asphalt. I am preparing for my big race in Phoenix at the end of the month, so if you have any comments, concerns, or suggestions, please call or email me.

Douglas Killebrew

Dirt berms were put in on the north and south of the entrance to keep people from going around the gate.

Our spring pattern contest will be held March 27th & 28. The date was changed in hopes that there will be better weather.

There was a lot of discussion of how to build the club membership. There were many great ideas. Doug and Roger designed a flyer to put at Smiths Hobbies. Having an Open House was also dis-cussed.

Dale at Smiths Hobbies wants input on what they could carry in order to better promote the hobby.

We will be having an indoor fly, so get your small stuff ready to fly.

FLOAT FLYING—DESERT STYLE By Dick Skoglund

The rains came to the Antelope Valley in January 2010. The water puddles at the Tailwinds’ field gradually came together and created a pond that almost matched our concrete runway in size. It had a depth of 2 to 3 inches and a color not unlike gla-cier water.

I had located a Balsa USA Taube kit and floats from Mac and Roger. So now I have no excuses left and will have to fly in the sunshine of January 23rd. Mac and I arrived at “the pond”, got the plane ready, did an engine run-up, radio check and a pontoon leak check. We lined up into a slight breeze and opened the throttle. Hang on! Not too much rudder and up and away it went. Water takeoffs are always excit-ing. Later we made the approach and a good land-ing. We had time for one more flight.

By then Russ O., Ron and Harvey G. and richard H. had arrived and got to watch our little desert Float-Fun-Fly.

A special thanks to Mac and Richard for their assis-tance and camera work.

TIPS FOR CLUBS

(from the January 2010 edition of the AMA Insider Newsletter

by Jim Wallen, Insider Club Column Editor

LEADER TO LEADER

Has your club become a little inbred? By this I mean perhaps you have not looked around to other clubs to see what you might incorporate to make your club more interesting and enjoyable.

Visit another club’s meetings to see what features you might carry back to your club. Maybe you can arrange to have a couple of clubs in your area get together and fly at a host field. It’s amazing what a hot dog and a cup of coffee can do in bringing club and personal relationships closer together.

Most AMA clubs around the country are facing declining membership. Is your club in the same boat? What can you do about it? Nothing happens unless you go out and make it happen. AMA had a membership drive last year that added new members. The program is improved for 2010, so take the time to understand it and bring the details to your club and membership. New members bring a fresh outlook and renewed enthusiasm. Wouldn’t it be nice to add some new volunteers to the 10% who seem to do most of the work?

Are you aware of the AMA program “Sign 3-Fly Free?” You can receive a one-year AMA membership credit for signing up only three new members! For details see the AMA Web site at www.modelaircraft.org/ambassador.aspx.
