I am pleased to share with you the first issue of the Auro University Newsletter “Awakening” 2013. Here you will find articles on the different and interesting ways university is furthering the vision of changing our society through Integral Education. I am fully aware of the expectations people have from a New University like ours which has the mission of preparing future leaders through Integral and Transforma- tional Education. We are working hard to transform the way we operate as a Univer- sity through continuous improvement in our ability to deliver quality education and experiment with new pedagogies and remain at the cutting edge. In short span of two years we have made remarkable progress. We are proud where we are and excited about where we are heading. The collective effort of our faculty members, staff, and the students has given us the courage and the energy to scale new heights each year. Message by the Provost

It is matter of great pleasure to share with you the first issue of “Awakening”, the Auro University Newsletter. The contents of this newsletter provide an insight of the various activities of the University towards promoting holistic development of the students.

Education, to be complete, must have five principal aspects corresponding to the five principle activities of a Human Being: Physical, Vital, Mental, The Psychic and Spiritual.

The aim of education at Auro is to prepare students to succeed in life and society, and to increase their perfectibility to its utmost; each one in his own way.

Auro University provides environment to students to discover them self - in classroom and outside of classroom, through learning and participating in campus activities. Through these activities, we encourage students to be aware and, develop values that will make them successful in life.

Educating our future leaders is a collective effort of Parents, Teachers, and Industry for realization of individual success. This in turn contributes to collective success of the community, society and nation.

Best University in the use of Technology in Teaching – Learning Practices

AURO University has been recognised as the “Best University in use of Technology in Teach-ing-Learning Practices” and has been given the CCI Technology Education Excel-lence Award 2013 at the award ceremony held at Ahmedabad on May 18, 2013.

The Education Leadership Award

AURO University has been honoured “The Education Leadership Award” by Dewang Mehta Business Award that recognises talent and leadership among the Educational Institutes across India on 23rd October, 2013 at Taj Lands, Inn, Mumbai. The award is in recognition of leadership, development, Innovation and industry interface of the Business School.

Memorandum of Understanding with University of Massachusetts Lowell

Articulation Agreement between AURO University and the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Manning School of Business has been established. This agreement will facilitate the path and success of students transferring from AURO University to University of Massachu-setts Lowell.

Above and Beyond Award

Shri H. P. Rama, President of AURO University and Chairman and CEO, JHM Hotels was the recipient of the 2013 “Above and Beyond Award” at year’s Lodging Conference held from 17th to 20th September, 2013 in Phoenix, Arizona. He is recognised as an industry leader who has gone above and beyond business success to make a significant impact on the world through Philanthropic and Humanitarian efforts.

Students at the first Convocation of the batch of 2013 along with the dignitaries

Convocation 2013

The first Annual Convocation of the AURO University of the Class of Two Thousand Thirteen of the University was held on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 5:00 pm at the Taj Gateway, Surat (Diamond Hall). 22 MBA students re-ceived their degrees. Welcome address was delivered by Provost and Vice Chancellor Dr. Kamlesh Misra. Shri H. P. Rama headed the function and delivered the Presidential address. Shri Bhupendrasinh Chudasma, Minister, Education, (Primary, Secondary, Adult) Higher & Technical Educa-tion, Law and Judiciary, Food & Civil Supplies, Consumers Affairs, Pancha-yat, Rural Housing and Rural Development, delivered the Convocation address.

Shri Bhupendrasinh Chudasma, congratulated the passing out students. He emphasised on the fact that in the present scenario mere education is not enough without the cultural grounding. He appreciated that AURO Uni-versity along with education is also catering to spiritual and social needs of their students, this will not only help them today but also in their future en-deavours.

Orientation

Orientation programme for the students was organised from 5th August 2013 to 10th August 2013. Shri H. P. Rama, President of AURO Univer-sity shared the Vision and Mission statement with the students and en-couraged the students to live up to the values set forth by the University. Dr. Kamlesh Misra formally welcomed the students to AURO University. His motivational speech charged the students with vigour and enthusiasm. During this occasion Mr. Subhajyoti Mukherjee, Essar Steel; Mr. Sanjay Agarwal, Beacon Insurance; Mr.Taranvir Singh, ITW Signode; Dr. S. Antony Raj, J.H. Ambani Vidyamandir; Mr. K. Ramakrishnan, Larsen & Toubro; Mr. Rakesh Trivedi, Ex-SGCCI; Dr. Ajay Bhattacharya, Ex-Pres, SGCCI; Mr. G Sivakumar, DPS Surat; Mr. Pankaj Dhatterwal & RJ Rahil; were the Guest speakers from the industry who were invited to inspire the students. Each speaker in his own way pointed out the expec-tations of the Industry.

Foundation Day Celebration Mr. Bharat Dabholkar, ‘the Utterly Butterly Man of India’ was the Chief Guest for the occasion of Foundation day on 10th August 2013. Mr. Dabholkar, a person with multifaceted personality shared with the students his struggle to success and had a strong impact when he said that he was teetotaller.

Analytical Techniques for Research

Faculty Development Programme on ‘Analytical Techniques for Research’ was organised from 3rd June to 8th June, 2013. Prof. Ravinder Vinayek from MDU, Rohtak; Prof. Balwinder Singh from GNDU, Amritsar; Prof. Ajay Kumar Chauhan, IMT, Ghaziabad and Prof. Neeraj Kaushik, from TITS, Bhiwani; were the facilitators. Faculties from in and around Surat participated. It surely con-tributed to the enhancement of Research Skills.

Integral Education : An Experiential Learning

Faculty Development Programme was organised for AURO Faculties and Staff from 29th July to 2nd August 2013. As AURO University aims at being a centre for Integral and Transformational Learning, a five day FDP was organised to familiarise the faculties with the concept of Integral Edu-cation and deliberations were held to derive ways and means of implementing in higher education.

National Conference on Law and Justice 2013

National Conference on Law and Justice Auro University, School of Law, organised and hosted a two day National Conference on Law and Justice-2013 on 14th and 15th September 2013. The Key note speakers for the inaugural session were Justice A. P. Mishra, and Justice C. K. Thakker, former judges, Supreme Court of India. Shri H. P. Rama, President of AURO University, presided over the function. Dr. Kamlesh Misra Provost and Vice Chancellor of AURO Uni-versity shared with the participants his mission to create an academic culture to promote excellence in higher education. Dr. Kiran Gardner, Conference Chair officially welcomed the participants.

The Conference had 111 participants from forty six Universities and 15 different States and from Srilanka and Bangladesh. It constituted of Academicians, Advocates, law students, other professionals, NGO Repre-sentatives etc. The second day of the Conference commenced with the joint session by Prof. (Dr) Dilip Ukey, Vice Chancellor, Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded. Three papers were awarded prizes and all the papers presented were published in the Conference proceedings with ISBN num-ber.

Portfolio Optimization Event titled “Portfolio

Yodha” organized by Auro University, Surat

On October 26th, 2013, Auro University, Surat conducted the event titled “Portfolio Yodha” an inter-college portfolio optimization competition in Finance using Solver tool. Over 75 students from different colleges and Universities from Surat, Gujarat participated in this event. The organizing Secretary Mr. Rohit Malhotra, Fac-ulty-Finance, Auro University, Surat and MBA Finance students conducted this one day event in the University campus.

The Portfolio optimization game utilized the two-asset Markowitz model with Sharpe-optimization ratio for calculation purposes. The event was divided into Panel discussion by Mr. Gaurav V. Singhvi, Founder “Financial Supermarket”, and Comprehensive Seminar on Portfolio optimization by MBA Finance students of Auro University, The portfolio optimization game at Computer Center and in the evening the event ended with the Prize distribution. During the closing speech, Dr. Kamlesh Misra, Pro-Vice Chancellor congratulated the winners and the organizing team members for organizing such a wonderful event for the first time in Surat. A few experts from Finance industry also graced the event.

ogy offering BSc (IT) at AURO University helps in giving quality, diversified and practical need based education to the student community which helps in instilling within students professional and entrepreneurial spirit and the abil-ity to go beyond academic man-agement approaches. The pro-grams help students recognize and anticipate opportunity to be a successful human being. The programs are such designed as to create a perfect mix of academic rigour and industry expectations for holistic development. These schools also provide opportunity for global exposure and training for real time learning and knowledge. The mission is to train and trans-form them from learners to leaders in the knowledge society by imbib-ing the core values of the AURO University. Unique approach of one subject a day teaching incul-cating the habit of learning by

doing and seeing, not only with listening and rote learning has infused greater confidence and rational approach towards educa-tion.

AURO University has a technical collaboration with Manning School of Business, University of Massa-chusetts Lowell, USA for global best business practices in acade-mia with special emphasis on de-livery mechanism, pedagogy, as-sessment, and faculty training and student exchange. The School will leverage out the benefit of being situated within the vicinity of Indus-trial hub of Hazira, Surat with the Corporate Houses like NTPC, ONGC, BHEL, ESSAR, TGB, Taj Gateway etc. for industry exposure and professional linkages. Thus, through constant effort we will professionalize management edu-cation to a next higher level in a meaningful manner.

Expert Lectures

Mr. Suresh Mathur, COO, Auro University, lectured the students on, “Careers in Hospitality Sector and Evolution of the hospitality Industry in America & Europe” on 3rd & 4th September 2013 respectively.

Mr. H. P. Rama addressed the BHM students on the topic, “Pioneers in the Hospitality Industry” on 10th September, 2013.

Mr. R. P. Rama delivered an expert lecture on, “Future Technology Trends in the Hospitality Sector” on 11th September 2013.

Mr. Amit Mehta, GM, Gateways, Surat, addressed the BHM students on the topic, “Hotel Operations” on 5th October 2013.

Mr. Saurab Ratan, VP-Operations, JHM Interstate, India, Gurgaon, New Delhi, highlighted the issues related to, “Grooming for the Hospitality Sector” on 7th October 2013.

Mr. Kishan Malhotra, Tax head of Northern region and Mr. Tejas Karia, Partner, from Amarchand and Magaldas and Suresh A Shroff and Co. visited AURO University on 12th October 2013 and addressed the upcoming legal professional at the University. They not only shared their ex-periences with the budding lawyers but also discussed the qualities required to be best in the field.

Ms. Reshmi Rajan, HR Executive, Integrity Knowledge Services (KPO) Ahmedabad addressed the HRP students on 25th October 2013.

Ms. Vaishali Dhingra delivered an expert lecture to MBA first year students on, “Research Methodology” on 29th October 2013.

Industry Interface

On 24th August, 2013 B. Sc. Hospitality students visited AMUL to understand it working and product line.

On 30th August, 2013 M. B.A. Part II students visit Taj Gateway Hotel to observe the nuances of Service Marketing.

Semester I students of BBA LLB visited the District Consumer Forum on 3rd September 2013 where Advocate Shreyesh Desai addressed the students. He gave an overview of Consumer Protection Act and discussed the case he was arguing in the Court. Ms Geetaben Shroff, one of the members of the forum interacted with the students and explained the procedure followed at the forum.

On 20th September, 2013, students of B. Sc. Information Technology visited Essar Steel to study the practical aspect of their course.

Semester III students of BBA LLB visited Family Courts on 30th September 2013 where Principal Judge Mr. Shah and additional Judge Mr. Patel addressed the students. Advocate Ashit Mehta advised the students that they should remember 3 ds in life to be successful in legal profession i.e. dressing, dashing and address.

On 3rd October, 2013 students of B. Sc. Hospitality Management visited Trister Hospital to get the first-hand experience of the needs of people admitted in Hospital.

On 15th October, 2013 students of final year BBA visited Future group Life Style to observe the Marketing strategy.

On 28th October, 2013 BBA final year students visited Landmark group life style retail store to study the retail marketing business.

Sports Table Tennis

Adnan Doctor stood third in District Table Tennis Competition and won Rs 2000 as cash prize. Adnan Doctor, Dixant Lohia and Zafar Timol repre-sented AURO University in State Level Table Tennis Competition.

Volley Ball

Sweta Patel was part of the Volley Ball team that stood third in Khel Mahakumbh Volley Ball Competition. In the Beach Khel Mahakumbh Competition the girls team of AURO University where runners up and won Rs 6000/- as cash prize.

World Food Day World Food Day was celebrated by the School of Hospitality on 18th October 2013. Focus of the event was Sustainable Food Systems for Food Secu-rity and Nutrition. The day commenced with lighting of lamp at 9.30 am in presence of all the faculties and students. On this occasion Poster Exhibition of posters made by volunteers of United Nations Organisation was held at students’ Courtyard followed by Salad making Competition. All the prizes were sponsored by leading hospitality houses from Surat.

Activities at AURO University 2013

AURO University Sports Committee Members along with the participants Abhay Saxena and Kayzad Mistry for Inter University Swimming Championship to be held at Amritsar.

Ganesh Utsav Celebration of Ganesh Utsav commenced on 9th October, 2013. Huge Pandal was erected to receive Lord Ganesha with strong belief that he will smoothen everybody’s path. Students ensured that all the required rituals were followed.

On 11th October, 2013 students left everything aside and stepped up to the beats of dhol, picked up their-dandiyas and danced to the tunes of captivating rhythmic beats. Navratri night was celebrated with zest and euphoria with Live DJ at AURO University.

The Littérateur Society The Littérateur Society organised the screening of the movie, “Pay It Forward” for the Students, Faculty and Staff. Movie focused on kindness and act of putting others first. The movie proclaimed that each one of us can make a difference in the world by doing good.

IT and Robotics Club On 7th October, 2013,the IT and Robotics Club organized an IT Gaming Competition on ‘Counter Strike’ and ‘Need-For-Speed-Most-Wanted’. The students enthusiastically participated in the event and displayed tre-mendous confidence and IT skills.

Global Exposure Tour — 2013 Every year AURO organizes Global Exposure Tour to provide students with a unique combination of multi-cultural, entrepreneurial, social and leader-ship experience. This year, batch of 17 students had been to United States of America from May 13th to June 6th, 2013. The tour facilitated students with required global exposure which provided them a profound insight into the global business trends and latest management practices.

During this exposure tour students got opportunity to visit various industries including UPS, BMW plant, Wells Fargo Bank – the 4th largest bank of United States, JHM Resource Centre and University of Massachusetts- Lowell educational institute.

Workshop on “Information Security & Cyber Laws” School of Information & Technology had organized a 2 day workshop on “Information Security & Cyber Laws” from 29th August to 30th August, 2013 for IT and Law students. This workshop was conducted by ‘HicubeInfosec Pvt Ltd’; at Auro University where students got an opportunity to learn the basics of Cyber World, Need of Data Security & Privacy, Penetration testing and web site ethical hacking aspects.

Freshers’ Week With a view to know each other well and build a bonding The Freshers’ Week was organised with great zeal and enthusiasm by the seniors of the university to extend a warm welcome to the new students. It happened to be a wonderful blend of possibilities, a point from which any direction can be taken.

Freshers’Party Freshers’ Party for the students was organised at Taj Gateway Hotel on 30th August 2013. Freshers’ party provided opportunity to make new friends. It was a time to party hard, dance crazily and have lots of fun.

Rangoli Competition Rangoli competition was organized by the Aadhar club on 31st Oct. 2013. The occasion conducted just on the eve of Diwali signified two important aspects – Colours, and Festivities. The diverse colours present in each of the rangolis were a source of inspiration as well as joy for all.

Deepawali Party It was a kind gesture by The JHM Hotels to organize a Diwali party for all the staff members of the Auro University on 31st Oct. 2013. It was a lot of fun with games, activities, music, and dance where the Auro members got opportunity to know each other better. To make the event more lively corporate gifts to all and prizes to the winners of each activity were given.

Inauguration of Legal Aid Clinic On 15th September, 2013 Legal Aid Clinic was inaugurated by the auspicious hands of Justice J. N. Bhatt. The Clinic will work for providing free legal Aid to the needy and conducting legal research.

Dr. Kiran Gardner on 20th and 29th October, 2013 conducted a session on, “Protection of Children for Sexual Offence Act, 2012” in the orientation workshop of Senior Police Officers on Child Friendly Policing of Narmada District at Rajpipla and Navsari respectively.

Summer Internship Master in Business Administration students went for Summer internship to companies like Mahindra Finance, HDFC, Axis Bank, Motilal Oswal, Voda-fone, Pepsico, Cushman Weikfield, Bajaj Alliance and many other reputed Companies.

Placement AURO University, Master in Business Administration 2013 batch final placement happened with companies like Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, Beacon In-surance, Taj Group Hotels, J.H.M. Hotels, R.R, Advisory, IndiaMart Intermesh, India infoline to name a few. Few students joined family business. More than 150 job opportunities were open for final placement of 15 students.
