award winner (grant): poster for the 2008 south seattle festival of words & photos
DESCRIPTION
Seeking funding help for my newspaper’s growing arts festival, I turned to the City of Seattle’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs grant program, wrote a proposal, and won a nice-sized grant to help me promote and put on the Third Annual South Seattle Festival of Words & Photos. With the arts funding in hand, I commissioned the talented Seattle-based graphic artist Jeremy Eaton to work with me to create a poster for the festival that also promoted The Rainier Valley Youth Theater’s Young Playwrights Festival. The two festivals were held on the weekend of March 14 and 15, 2008 at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center in the downtown area of the historic Columbia City neighborhood. Eaton’s work is filled with symbols of South Seattle’s cultural diversity, a clever and retro-feeling composition referencing both of the festivals, and nods to present day and historical landmarks (Mount Rainier, Sound Transit Light Rail, the famous Rainier Beer ‘R,‘ and a Boeing plane to name a few.)TRANSCRIPT
