VISION - EAST KIMBERLEY ABORIGINAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
Community spirit grows from the contributions of many individuals, families, community groups,
businesses and organisations. The East Kimberley Aboriginal Achievement Awards (EKAAA)
celebrate and showcase those who contribute to the strength of our local community, helping to build
a stronger future for the people of the East Kimberley and the region as a whole. The focus is on
identifying quiet achievers and leaders who continually give back to the community in many different
ways.
BACKGROUND
REMOTENESS
The East Kimberley is one of the most remote areas of Australia, situated 3206 kms from Perth and
1032 kms from Broome. Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011 census data states the population of
the East Kimberley is 7799 of whom 38% are Aboriginal.
Between 2006 and 2011, population has grown by 19% across the Kimberley, providing a strong
impetus to develop appropriate economic and social activities that will encompass different elements
of the region’s culture. Overall, the population of the Kimberley is characterised by its strong growth
and high proportion of Aboriginal people, which is significant at 43.5%.
The region has an extremely young and rapidly-growing Aboriginal population, which in combination
with other demographic challenges, underlines the importance of building a culture of success and
promoting strong, positive role models within the community. The East Kimberley Aboriginal
Achievement Awards specifically aim to do this by acknowledging, supporting, and promoting those
leaders in our community who are already achieving great things across a range of endeavours.
This important ambition can only be achieved with help from a range of partners and supporters.
The awards were previously known as ‘The Wunan
Achievement Awards’. They were initiated by the ATSIC
Wunan Regional Council in 2000 to recognise achievements
of individuals and organisations in Aboriginal affairs across the
East Kimberley.
The Wunan Achievement Awards were last held in 2003. As
the Wunan Regional Council wanted to ensure that the
awards were recognised as a community-driven event, they
were renamed the East Kimberley Aboriginal Achievement
Awards (EKAAA). These awards were held annually from
2004 to 2009. The EKAAA is now conducted biennially; the
last event was held in 2011.
In 2011, the EKAAA attracted 80 outstanding regional
nominations across 14 different award categories. The awards
ceremony was opened by the Mirima Dancers, and guests
enjoyed fine dining, quality entertainment and inspirational
guest speakers. The evening was attended by over 300
guests and nominees. All nominees received special
certificates and each winner was proudly presented with a
hand-crafted trophy in the form an inscribed decorated plate
made by the Wuggubun Community.
