GrenacheGSMCabernet/Shiraz

Though Grenache is originally from the Rhône in France, Australia has the oldest plantings of this grape in the world; some vines planted in 1850 are still used to make wines. Grenache is the workhorse of Australian wine. Originally used in the production of fortified wine, it was soon featured in many of Australia’s red blends. In recent years, single-varietal expressions have become increasingly popular. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre (Mataro in Australia) are the main components of the red wines of the southern Rhône, though in Australia, Shiraz typically takes a more conspicuous role in the blend. Aussie GSM wines are fruit-forward, with notes of dark chocolate and vanilla. Cabernet/Shiraz blends are a bit of an Australian forte. These popular expressions rose to prominence in the 1970s, with people drawn to the way Shiraz softened Cabernet’s firm tannins, creating richly flavoured, approachable wines. This “Great Australian Blend,” as Cab/Shiraz became known, has given the world one of Australia’s greatest wines: the legendary Penfolds Bin 60A. Always willing to experiment, Australian winemakers have been exploring alternative varietals for their blends, including Sangiovese, Tempranillo and (as featured here in the Bleasdale Broad-Side) Malbec, to name but a few.

Merlot

HUGH HAMILTON THE RATBAG MERLOT 2016McLaren Vale, South Australia

TASTING NOTE: In such a Mediterranean clime, it is easy to forget just how well Bordeaux varieties can perform with the region’s maritime influence. This is no exception. Gently extracted for a design persuasive of early drinking. Notes of tomato leaf, mint and a plummy mid-palate strewn with dried herb, are the calling cards. Score: 91 (Ned Goodwin, winecompanion.com.au, Aug. 1, 2019)


Unlike the vast majority of the wines in Australia, Merlot doesn’t trace its story back to the 1800s. The first plantings were actually in the early 1920s, but it was only in 1965 that Merlot took a firm, if limited, hold on Australia’s wine landscape. For years, poor site selection hurt the profile of Australian Merlot, but more careful planting saw a surge in both quality and popularity in the 1990s, and the grape hasn’t looked back. Though it’s most often used in blends, single-varietal Merlots are becoming more popular. In the McLaren Vale, with its rolling hills and ocean-influenced climate, Merlot ripens well, offering lush, ripe fruit.

Wildfire Update The wildfires that raged across Australia last year and into early 2020 were unprecedented in their scope and intensity. According to Wine Australia, less than 1% of Australia’s total vineyards were impacted; an amazing fact that gives some perspective on the vast size of this country. However, of the areas affected, some suffered significant damage and many vineyards were completely destroyed. Wineries in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland experienced the most damage, and early estimates for Adelaide Hills, one of the worst-hit areas, suggest that nearly 30% of its vineyards were impacted.

Assessing the complete scope of the damage will take considerable time. It’s easy for winemakers to see burned vines, but the effect of the extreme heat on the vines will take longer to determine. The scale of the repair work is considerable, and growers and winemakers are relying on the assistance of volunteers to help them. Careful protocols are being implemented to save injured vines, irrigation systems are being built, and destroyed vines replanted. These newly replanted vines won’t be viable for winemaking for at least three years. In all, it has been estimated that Australia lost 4% of its national crop to the fires.

Pinot Noir is notoriously difficult to grow, and it succeeds only in cool-climate conditions. With this in mind, it may come as a surprise that as of 2019, Pinot is the fourth-most-crushed grape in Australia behind Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot. Pinot is produced in four principal areas: Yarra Valley, Tasmania, Adelaide Hills and Mornington Peninsula. The Yarra Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in Australia and produces several styles of Pinot. Pinots from cooler sites and those planted in volcanic soils reflect an aromatic, floral and spicy character, while those from slightly warmer areas with clay and loam soils are more fruit-forward.

Crafted from your favourite red wine grapes but lighter coloured thanks to their shorter maceration period – measured in hours rather than days or weeks – they are food-friendly must-haves for summer dining. Vintages writer Teige Reid chatted with some local producers whose work is pushing Ontario rosé to new heights.

Pelee Island Lola Cabernet Franc Rosé (Walter Schmoranz, president and winemaker)What is it that you’re looking for in your rosé?

I want a wine with pure forward fruit and a tart freshness and just a little spritz.

How do you go about getting this?

Pelee Island has made excellent rosé for a long time. We have good history with it, going back to the ’80s, and we have learned a lot. We pick the grapes early in the morning (this keeps the freshness), and we let the grapes macerate for 12 hours, though sometimes we might go as much as 20. This gives us the body, texture and flavours.

The Tragically Hip Flamenco Rosé (Jeff Innes, winemaker)This is a new Tragically Hip wine. How involved was the band in the process?

The band members were instrumental in creating the Flamenco; they tasted with us and the label was designed by Rob Baker. It took a few years and a lot of collaboration to decide on what the next wine should be, and we’re all really proud of the Flamenco. I think people are going to love this.

What grapes did you use?

It’s a blend of Gamay Noir and Pinot Noir, sourced specifically for the wine and hand-picked early to preserve the acidity. That focus, from vineyard to bottle, is the key to making great rosé.

Tawse Sketches of Niagara Rosé (Paul Pender, winemaker)Tell me about how you make the Sketches.

We make this in the saignée method, bleeding off about 10-15% of free-run

juice from our red wines. Rosé wines made this way gain great concentration and depth from the slightly longer skin contact. This one will drink well for two years or more.

You don’t often hear people talk about older rosé. What’s the oldest you’ve tried?

A little while ago we came across one of our 2013s. It was still vibrant and bright and very fresh. I wasn’t surprised; the acidity and structure in the wine mean that this rosé can really come into its own after some time in bottle.

Three of Hearts Rosé (Daniel Speck, senior vice-president, sales)Can I tell you about our label? I think you might like the story.

Of course, please.

We wanted the label to capture the idea that there are three brothers [Paul, Daniel and Matthew] who have been working together making wine for a long time; that’s the three. We looked at a lot of designs for the heart, and when we showed our mother the one we had picked, she said, “it’s a Sacred Heart” and we realized that the choice was even more perfect than we had first thought. My dad was a Catholic priest before life took him down a different path. It makes the label and the wine even more special; it’s the three of us and Dad.

Malivoire Ladybug Rosé (Shiraz Mottiar, winemaker)Why do you think we’re seeing such an increased interest in rosé?

Rosé can be fun or serious and sublime. It is versatile, specific and regional, and that makes it very interesting.

People have certainly taken to the Ladybug. It’s very popular.

The Ladybug is rich and dry, bright and lively, and the Cab Franc, Gamay and Pinot give plenty of fresh, tart summer berry flavours. People love that they can have it with anything: pasta, roasted veg, charcuterie, ham, fish. It’s great before, during or after a meal.

Peninsula Ridge Beal Vineyard Cabernet Rosé (Jamie Evans, winemaker)Let’s start simple: what is it that you like most about rosé?

It’s hard to be sad with a glass of rosé in your hand. It’s an uplifting wine.

Tell me about the Beal Rosé.

The Beal vineyard was planted in 1999, and this means that our rosé is unique because the Cabernet Franc we use is coming from an older single site. This rosé really shows its terroir. We set aside about half of the vineyard specifically for the rosé and we cold ferment to keep the fruit as fresh as possible to give the wine energy and verve.

It’s an apt metaphor for this red blend.
